DENVER — The Class 4A baseball tournament, which is set to resume on Thursday after multiple postponements caused by unplayable fields, will play the second stage of its double-elimination format next week.

After Thursday’s games, which will be played at Metro State throughout the day, four teams will remain in Class 4A. Those four teams will play what is effectively the semifinals next Tuesday and Wednesday at All-Star Park in Lakewood, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann, who oversees baseball.

All-Star Park was unplayable due to standing water left by overnight rain on Monday, but should be good to go for next Tuesday and Wednesday, Borgmann said.

Tuesday’s games in 4A will be at noon and 2:30 p.m. On Wednesday, the championship game will be at noon, with the if necessary game at 2:30 p.m.

These changes have been reflected on the 4A bracket.

There was consideration to move the 5A baseball tournament off of its scheduled Friday and Saturday dates this week in order to try and avoid poor weather, but the forecast is now a bit more forgiving. As a result, the 5A tournament remains scheduled for this weekend at All-City Field in Denver.

Borgmann visited All-City on Wednesday morning, and said it looked to be in good shape.

However, due to graduation ceremonies of both Chatfield and Rock Canyon, the schedule for Friday has been altered slightly. Mountain Vista and Grandview will play at 10:30 a.m., while Rock Canyon and Chatfield will begin at roughly 1 p.m.

Of course, should things change, CHSAANow.com will pass along the latest information.

  • Second day of 5A girls golf cancelled due to rain; first-day results stand

LOVELAND — The second day of the Class 5A girls golf championship has been cancelled due to rain and an unplayable course.

It means the results from the first day of competition now stand up as final. Regis Jesuit has won the 5A team title, and Gillian Vance of Dakota Ridge has won the individual championship.

The 4A tournament is still on as scheduled as of 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

5A was set to be held at the Olde Course, but an overnight rain which was still falling on Tuesday morning left a lot of standing water on the course.

“The course was deemed unplayable by course officials,” said Jenn Roberts-Uhlig, CHSAA assistant commissioner who was acting as site director. “The result is that, unfortunately, we have to cancel the second day of the tournament.”

Golfers and teams are still encouraged to come to the Olde Course, as individual and team awards still need to be handed out. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m.

The 5A tournament was hoping to move ahead with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday, but golfers never got a chance to get out on the course.

The decision was made to not push to play into Wednesday in order to mitigate lost school time and cost to schools. In addition, the course was not available on Wednesday, meaning golfers would have had to come back next week.

Finally, it is a long-standing policy of the tournament to have first round results hold up should the second round be canceled. That was communicated to everyone on Monday.

“That’s just been the policy all along that if we ever got to the situation, that’s what we would do,” said CHSAA associate commissioner Tom Robinson, who is in charge of golf. “The teams and players knew that if one of the rounds could not get in, we would do this. Everyone was aware of that.

“We hoped to be able to play the round, and took steps to try and get it in early, but unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate.”

  • Dakota Ridge’s Vance top individual, Regis Jesuit wins team title at 5A girls golf

LOVELAND — Gillian Vance woke up on Tuesday to the news that she had won the Class 5A girls golf state championship.

Vance, a senior at Dakota Ridge, found out from her coach that the second day of the tournament was canceled when overnight and continuing rain left the Old Course unplayable on Tuesday. It meant that the scores from the first day held up as final — and Vance, at 4-under, had the top score.

“I’m still kind of shocked. It hasn’t quite hit me yet. I’m sure it will,” Vance said on Tuesday morning. “My coach called me and said, ‘You’re a state 5A champion!’ I was like, ‘What?’”

Vance was hoping to play a second day, but had prepared herself for the cancellation. It was announced on Sunday night that a one-day tournament was a possibility. As a result, she attacked the course on Monday.

“I definitely wanted to play a little aggressive (Monday),” Vance said. “I just wanted to go out with a bang. That’s what I tried to do. I just kind of went for it.”

Vance’s 68 edged out Regis Jesuit senior Sydney Gillespie, who shot a 2-under 70 on Monday. Grandview’s Morgan Sahm, Rock Canyon’s Alexis Chan and Ralston Valley’s Ashlyn Kirschner all tied for third at 1-over 73. (Find complete results here.)

Vance finished tied for 25th as a freshman, tied for ninth as a sophomore and in a tie for 14th last season. After all being in contention all three years, she finally broke through to the top.

“It’s always been, I qualify for this tournament and I have such high hopes — but then I don’t do my best,” Vance said. “It’s prepared me so much the last three years, and I definitely knew what to expect (this season). So I just wanted to put up a good number and have fun, not to put too much pressure on myself like I did the years before. I just had a lot of fun.”

Gillespie’s day led three Regis Jesuit golfers who finished in the top 10. The result was that the Raiders repeated as team champion with a 5-over 221. Rock Canyon (+18) was second.

Gillespie, like Vance and many other golfers, was hoping for a shot at playing a second day.

“I put myself in a good position (Monday), so not being able to play is a little disappointing,” she said. “But then again, 70 is nothing to be disappointed at.”

Gillespie had to hurry away from the course on Monday to be back in Aurora in time to graduate.

“It was just crazy,” she said. “But it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed it. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Regis Jesuit has now won three championships in four seasons, having also won 4A in 2012. The Raiders’ Mary Weinstein (+3, 74) and Jaclyn Murray (+4, 76) were the other top-10 finishers. Ali Timlin also shot a 95.

“We’re really proud of that, and two in a row is really special,” said Regis Jesuit coach George Miller. “The secret is we have some amazing kids. We have three girls where each one of them could win a tournament on a given day. And they did. Each won a league tournament as an individual.

“I’ve never had anywhere near that. To put three kids together who can all shoot 75 on a given day, you’ve got a pretty good chance.”

  • 4A baseball moved to Metro State on Thursday; 4A and 5A may push into next week

The Class 4A baseball tournament, which was postponed due to unplayable fields on Monday, has been moved to Metro State on Thursday.

Games will run all day long at the field, so long as weather permits play, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann, who oversees baseball. The field is a complete artificial surface, including the mound, batter’s box and bases, so it is more resilient than the traditional baseball field.

The games played on Thursday will comprise those originally scheduled for the second day of the tournament. Those were originally postponed to Monday at Bishop Machebeuf HS and All-Star Park in Lakewood. However, both fields were unplayable on Monday, and remain unplayable.

Noting that Evergreen has graduation scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, new game times for 4A are as follows:

    • Game 7: Windsor vs. D’Evelyn, 9 a.m.
    • Game 9: Game 7 winner vs. Wheat Ridge, 11:30 a.m.
    • Game 11: Ponderosa vs. Green Mountain, 2 p.m.
    • Game 8: Erie vs. Lewis-Palmer, 4:30 p.m.
    • Game 10: Game 8 winner vs. Evergreen, 7 p.m.

The bracket has been updated to reflect these changes.

No 4A games have been scheduled for Friday, so it can be used as a makeup date for any games that don’t complete play, if needed.

In addition, continued wet weather leading to other unplayable fields has this weekend’s 5A and 4A tournament schedule up in the air. Both are scheduled to play Friday and Saturday, with 4A at All-Star Park in Lakewood and 5A at All-City Field in Denver.

“All field field sites are reporting very, very iffy field conditions,” Borgmann said.

It is expected to continue to rain in the metro area off and on through the weekend.

As a result, Borgmann said, “We are now looking at what options are available next week.”

A decision on whether or not to move the 5A and 4A tournaments will be made by noon on Wednesday. As of right now, 2A and 3A remain scheduled for this weekend.

DENVER — It might sound improbable, but the same Chatfield Chargers who started the season 1-8 will play in the Class 5A state baseball championship game next Saturday.

“It’s weird. It’s crazy. The way we started the year I would have never thought we would be here,” Chatfield senior Kyle Winkler said after a 3-2 victory over Mountain Vista in extra innings Sunday night at Metro State University. “It’s crazy.”

The Chargers (14-10) completed its remarkable first two days of the double-elimination state tournament with a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Golden Eagles (16-8). Chatfield and Mountain Vista were the two lone undefeated teams in the eight-team championship series after both started the tournament with a pair of wins.

The extra-inning win guarantees the 5A Jeffco League champion will be in the title game next weekend at All-City Field in Denver.

“We can’t think about that,” Chatfield coach Matt Johnson said of the Chargers in the driver’s seat. “We just have to think about who is next and just keep going after them. That’s our focus, the next game.”

A dramatic walk-off victory against top-seed Cherry Creek on Sunday morning didn’t change the Chargers’ focus heading into the night tilt against Mountain Vista. The Golden Eagles had a remarkable come-from-behind rally against Regis Jesuit on Saturday afternoon. Mountain Vista trailed 10-1 late, but scored 10 unanswered runs to take an 11-10 victory in eight innings.

Sunday was Chatfield’s turn for late-inning heroics.

Chatfield senior Sean O’Dell doubled to put the winning run in scoring position with the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning against Mountain Vista. After a lineout by junior Brycen Lynn, who had four hits in the game, senior Jake Carstense was intentionally walked bring Winkler to the plate.

After watching a curveball and fastball called for strikes, Winkler went into defensive mode.

“I just wanted to battle with two strikes and put something in play,” said Winkler, who hit a solo home run during Chatfield’s 2-1 victory earlier in the day against Cherry Creek. “We were just fortunate to get lucky there. That’s how it works sometimes.”

Winkler hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop that was bobbled. O’Dell didn’t break stride rounding third base and sprinted for home. O’Dell just beat the throw to the plate with his head-first slide and slapped home for the game-winning run.

“I was just trying to bust it,” O’Dell said. “Something can happen and you can score the run and we can win the game.”

After having to sit out Chatfield 6-3 victory over Monarch on Saturday serving a one-game suspension after getting ejected from the district championship game last weekend for running over the catcher on a play at the plate, O’Dell came up big with a walk-off RBI hit against Cherry Creek on Sunday morning in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“I’m glad my teammates could pick me up and get the win so I could help win the next game,” O’Dell said.

Another key contributor for the Chargers was junior Mike Lucero. The relief pitcher picked up the save against Monarch on Saturday. He actually was the winning pitcher in both victories Sunday against Cherry Creek and Mountain Vista.

“That kid (Lucero) has ice in his veins,” O’Dell said. “Coming in as a junior, too, and not getting any innings on varsity last year, then dominating kids. That’s impressive. He saved us all.”

Lucero pitched 5 and 1/3 innings scoreless innings during the three-game stretch.

“It’s crazy. It’s unbelievable,” Lucero said. “Emotions are out of this world.”

Mountain Vista’s pair of runs in the loss came in the top of the fourth inning with RBIs from juniors Cooper Shearon and Tanner Gillis. The Golden Eagles held a 2-1 lead, but Lynn drove in O’Dell with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game.

Chatfield has won 12 of its last 13 games, while only allowing just nine runs in its five postseason games the past two weekends.

“We just feel like we can’t lose right now,” Winkler said.

Chatfield faces Rock Canyon (20-4) and Mountain Vista squares off against Grandview (15-9) on Friday when the state tournament resumes at All-City Field.
