  • Denver East volleyball tops Colorado Spring Christian in top-10 match across classes

COLORADO SPRINGS — They are both ranked, though they hail from different classes.

And yet, despite the difference in size between the two schools, Class 3A No. 4 Colorado Springs Christian and 5A No. 7 Denver East played at equal levels in a cross-classification volleyball match, with close sets early, and energy coming from teams on both sides of the net.

In a four-set match, Denver East left with a win  (25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 25-14) on the evening, but not without a fight from the Lions.

“Our girls come from all over the map,” said Denver East coach Tarah Sponenberg, whose team has alternated wins and losses over the past six matches, “and it’s been tough to get them all in rhythm. It’s our constant focus in practice and in games.”

The first set on Tuesday ended in a 25-23 victory for the Angels, and was a tight one throughout. The Lions opened the set with a two-point lead and early kills from seniors Jamie Nielson and Abby Skrastins.

Denver East junior Chase Jackson made her own mark and evened the score out to 3-3, but struggled to keep her attempts inbounds. Colorado Springs Christian keeps its two-point lead and a score of 8-6, but points added by the Angels’ Maya Patterson and Asiya Way evened the set at 12-12 halfway through the set.

Denver East then took a one-point lead following a kill from freshman Lexi Blair. Blair went on to add several more points, and with the help of her teammates, gained a three-point lead at 20-17.

The set stayed close and the gap small, eventually coming back to tie at 21. Points from Lions’ Cassie Davis and Nielson were answered by the Angels’ Way, and the set sat at 23-24 in favor of Denver East, but a missed spike by CSCS sealed the Denver win in the first set.

The second set was also a close one, with the Lions again taking an early lead over the Angels. With two aces from Skrastins opening the set at 2-0, the Denver East played hard and tied the score at 6-6.

Out of bounds hits and dropped passes, along with kills and long plays from both sides kept the score close and tied until 14-14. From there, the Lions took off, but not without a fight. After scoring five consecutive points, Colorado Springs Christian took a 23-17 lead, which was momentarily threaded by East with kills from Jackson and Blair.

However, the momentum didn’t stick with East, and the Lions took the set 25-19.

The third set showed a change of pace as both teams appeared to become tired. Close and tied at 4, it looked to be another competitive set.

But with more than five points spread across the Denver East players in a short amount of time, the Angels found themselves in a comfortable lead at 13-8. Following a CSCS timeout, the Lions came back within two, but it wasn’t enough.

With over 10 kills in the match, Jackson, Patterson and Way continued pounding balls inside, extending the East lead to 22-14. The Lions fought hard and cut the lead, but the Angels were a little too far out of reach, and took the third set 25-20.

In the fourth set, East took an early lead over CSCS and the Lions never truly caught up. East took a nine-point lead, and Colorado Springs Christian fought to close the gap, coming within seven points, but lost momentum. East on the final set 25-13.

“It was a little disappointing,” said Colorado Springs Christian coach Lori Currier.

The coach added that her team has been focusing on building a strong mental game, and felt that “in that last set, especially, we were just not there mentally.”

With more big matches coming up, the Lions are looking to build a morale and a mental toughness that can bring the team some wins. Skrastins, a senior, was a huge part of the team’s mentality over the course of the night.

Skrastins scored a high number of her team’s points, and was cheering hard for the Lions inbetween plays.

“That kid can play,” Sponenberg said.

Rothe, who is listed at 6-foot, 170 pounds, is 3-of-4 on field goal attempts this season, with a long of 55 against Pueblo East in the Trojans’ season-opener. He’s also handled punting duties this season.

On defense, he has a team-high four interceptions, 24 total tackles, and has blocked one kick.

Longmont is currently 5-0 and ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

Last season, Rothe was 4-of-8 on field goals with a long of 42 yards. He also had nine interceptions, 62 tackles and two blocked kicks on defense as the Trojans finished as runner-up in 4A.

An all-around athlete, Rothe is also part of Longmont’s boys basketball and baseball teams, and has been a varsity member of both programs since he was a freshman.

A centerfielder, Rothe hit .344 with two home runs and 12 RBIs for the Trojans baseball team last season. In basketball, he averaged 2.5 points per game last winter.

Rothe is the latest member of the 2016 football class to announce his college choice.

  • ThunderRidge boys soccer powers through the rain for a big win over Legend

    (Andre Lyseight/CHSAANow.com)

HIGHLANDS RANCH – Not even torrential rains couldn’t stop the Legend Titans and ThunderRidge Grizzlies from facing off Tuesday night at Shea Stadium.

In a game that was delayed an hour and a half due to weather conditions the two teams didn’t let the rain stop them from playing like any other night, and the Grizzlies were able to hang on for the 2-1 win.

The turning point of the game occurred when ThunderRidge (12-0 overall, 7-0 5A Continental League) was able to score two goals in the matter of 53 seconds before halftime. The first goal came from sophomore midfielder Ethan Anderson off a penalty kick down the middle. Shortly after second goal came from senior forward Brian Mantey with a beautiful corner kick.

“I think we had a iffy game,” Anderson said. “We played better before but we pulled out a win that’s all that matters.”

Anderson explained his game-changing goal that gave his team the lead.

“I just saw that the keeper was a little leaned to the right so I decided to place it the bottom left corner,” he said.

The Titans (4-5-1, 1-3-1) controlled the ball during the majority of the half prior to the goals from the Grizzlies. Legend had more opportunities to score than ThunderRidge but was not able to capitalize on any of the opportunities. Titans senior Dana Smith had a few opportunities to score with a nice mid air kick that just barely missed the goal.

“Tonight was probably the best game we played. We put together a 79-minute game and we needed an 80-minute game, unfortunately,” Titans coach Jordan Ivey said. “The boys really took the game plan and translated it. We were able to kind of frustrate what they were trying to do and really put in place what we were hoping to do.”

Both teams showed resilience as rain poured throughout the whole game.

In the second half Legend came out with the same intensity, forgetting their previous mistakes. The Titans controlled the ball majority of the second half just like the first half. Legend was finally able to get the ball in the net when junior Eric Peter scored with seven minutes left in the game. ThunderRidge held off Legend from scoring the remainder of the game.

“We played okay, it was not one of our best performances. Legend brought it tonight. I give them all the credit in the world, they were fantastic,” Grizzlies coach Chris Smith said. “All the pressure and energy they needed was there. We weathered the storm because they were fantastic tonight”.

The Grizzlies are currently ranked No.2 in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com rankings and are undefeated this season.

“We take it game by game. The most important thing is to put a win on the board and keep it going,” said Anderson.

Coach Smith says he preaches to his team to take games one at a time during their streak.

“This is the most coachable group I ever had,” he said. “They work hard and they take care of each other. I think that’s the biggest reason the streak has gone on

  • Resurrection Christian’s long volleyball winning streak ends at 70 matches

    Resurrection Christian volleyball

Resurrection Christian volleyball had its long winning streak ended on Tuesday in a 3-1 defeat to Roosevelt.

The streak, which dated to the 2013 season, spanned two state championship teams. Resurrection Christian’s last loss came Nov. 10, 2012 to knock the team out of the Class 2A state tournament.

The Cougars went 29-0 in 2013, and then 29-0 again in 2014. They had started with 12 straight wins this season to push the streak to 70 consecutive matches, which now stands as the third-longest winning streak in the sport’s history in this state.

Evergreen holds the state record with 182 consecutive matches won from 1978-85, and that’s a mark that will likely never be broken. Fowler is No. 2 with 92 consecutive wins from 1992-94.

Part of Resurrection Christian’s recent streak included three long winning streaks in terms of sets. Resurrection Christian won 41 consecutive sets in 2013, the fourth-most in history, and then 37 in a row in 2014, the ninth-most in history. Then, this season, the Cougars won 29-straight sets, the 14th-best streak in state history.

As for Tuesday’s loss, Resurrection Christian, ranked No. 1 in 2A to this point, was taken down by Roosevelt, a 4A program, 19-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-9.

There were two other long volleyball winning streaks which came to an end this season.

Lewis-Palmer had its 48-match winning streak snapped on Saturday. Fleming had a 49-match winning streak snapped on Sept. 11. Both of those streaks rank in the top 12 in state history.

  • D’Evelyn QB Owen Burke had a record-setting game last week

D’Evelyn quarterback Owen Burke polished off yet another incredible performance in a 43-42 overtime loss to Lewis-Palmer last Saturday.

Burke’s final line: 41-of-57 for 597 yards and six touchdowns against two interceptions. It was the third 500-yard game of his career. No other player in state history has had more than one 500-yard game. Burke threw for more than 500 yards twice last season, and also threw for 496 two weeks ago.

“Owen worked extremely hard in the offseason to improve his mechanics and overall understanding of reading the progression,” said D’Evelyn coach Jeremy Bennett. “It’s been fun watching this young man work his magic.”

Burke’s 41 completions last week set the state record, breaking the previous record of 39 held by three players, including Fairview’s Johnny Feauto, who tied the mark last season.

The 597 yards are the second-most in state history, behind only the 607 yards Holy Family’s Chris Helbig threw for in September.

Burke’s 57 attempts are the eighth-highest in a single game. The six touchdowns are tied for the 12th-most in state history. He also had seven yards rushing, and so his 604 yards of total offense are the fourth-best mark in history.

Over the past three games, Burke has thrown 13 touchdowns. That figure is the fourth-best.

On top of all of that, Burke is completing passes at a 71.8 percent rate this season, which would place him in the top 5 for a season mark.

Through five games, Burke has thrown for 2,067 yards and 21 touchdowns. The yardage figure is No. 2 in the state in all classifications, and second only to Helbig’s 2,090.

He is on pace to break into the top-10 for season records in touchdowns, completions, and attempts, and should also challenge for the season yardage record of 4,181 set by Bear Creek’s Justin Holland in 1998.

  • Boys golf roundup: Teammates on top of each state tournament after Day 1

5A state boys golf Hunter Paugh Fort Collins
Hunter Paugh lines up a birdie attempt on the ninth hole, his final of the first round. It was one of five birdies he had on Monday, when he jumped out to the lead at the 5A boys golf tournament. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Fort Collins senior Hunter Paugh fired a first-round 67 to seize the lead at the Class 5A boys golf state tournament on Monday.

Paugh had five birdies in his round, and just one bogey. He was sitting a 1-under heading into the final three holes of his round, and birdied all three to finish at 4-under.

Paugh finished third at last year’s 5A state tournament.

His Fort Collins teammate, AJ Ott, is one of four players tied in second at even par after the first day. The others: Lakewood’s Griffin Barela, Regis Jesuit’s Andrew McCormick and Mountain Vista’s Austin Hardman.

Lakewood and Regis Jesuit are tied for the team lead after the first day. Both are 6-over. Fossil Ridge is third at 8-over. Coronado, the defending champion, is fourth at 10-over, and Mountain Vista sits at 13-over.

The Eagles finished with four players in the top eight of the entire field. The team championship is only determined by three of the four scores for each team member.

Philip Lee (69), Tim Amundson (71), Coby Welch (73) and David Leede (75) have the Eagles sitting at 3-under par for the tournament, 18 strokes better than Evergreen, which sits in second place.

With all three teammates within six strokes of each other, they have a chance to wrap up a team title and each vie for the individual championship as well.

The Eagles shot 8-under as a team last year at Walking Stick in Pueblo to win the team championship.

3A: Peak to Peak teammates to battle for individual title

Friday is going to be quite a day for Peak to Peak teammates Nishant Datta and Sam Taylor.

The Pumas hold a 10-stroke lead over Kent Denver in the race for the 3A team golf title, so Datta and Taylor will spend the bulk of their time trying to figure out which one can add an individual championship to their trophy case.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

They both shot an even round of 72, putting each of them at par going into Tuesday’s final round of the tournament. And they both got there the same way. They were sitting at 2-under par going into the 18th hole, only to make double-bogey to bring them back to even.

“It’s unfortunate that a lot of teammates had to finish with the same tragedy on the last hole,” Taylor said. “I’m really proud of my team that we were able to step up today and get some things going.”

As a team, the Pumas lead the field at at six-over, which is 10 strokes better than Kent Denver. Defending team champion Sterling is currently tied for 11th place at 44-over.

Defending individual champion, Yale Kim (Dawson School) is in 13th place in the individual standings. He sank a birdie putt on 18 to finish with a 7-over 79 on the day.
