COMMERCE CITY — Kent Denver captured its second consecutive boys soccer state title on Saturday, shutting out Fountain Valley 2-0 and ending with a nearly perfect, yet still undefeated season, at 19-0-1.

The one tie in their record came in mid-September when Fountain Valley came to play, resulting in a 1-1 finish. The matchup nearly two months later looked unsurprisingly similar, even though the Class 3A championship was on the line. Both teams played fast and physical, with equal possession throughout.

Free kicks ruled the game, yet none could connect. Both teams kept poking and prodding at each goal, with goalies Philip Huxel and Ross Rainaldi keeping the game scoreless.

But at nearly 63 minutes into the game, the Fountain Valley Danes made a costly error, fouling halfback Davis Oudet in the box and giving the Sun Devils a penalty kick.

Kent’s lead scorer, Max Gottesfield, took the shot, keeping it on the ground and sending it left past Huxel.

“I was skeptical about taking it but Davis told me to do it and I — well, I just made it,” said Gottesfield, the junior forward who continues to execute on the goal game and game again.

Fountain Valley fans were hopeful of their tenacious squad, but each close free kick, corner, or cross continued to come up short, Rainaldi punching out two potential game changers in those last 17 minutes.

Kent Denver then sealed its win in the last few minutes, finally finishing one of their crosses in the box. Senior halfback Tyler Nowak used his left finesse foot to put it over three defenders while fellow halfback, junior Rory Buck, met the ball in the air to head it perfectly past Huxel. Nowak put the finishing goal in the net at last year’s state championship, as well.

Fountain Valley wraps up its season 15-3-2. The Danes remain winless in their two state championship appearances, the last in 2007. This was Kent’s eighth appearance in the state championship, and second consecutive championship win.

Gottesfield will head into his senior year and 2016 season with two back-to-back championships. He adds to his resume with game winning goals in both the semifinals and championship of this year’s state tournament.

“It feels amazing. We just worked hard all year,” said Gottesfield. “We tied this team in the regular season and we just had to keeping working to get it done this time while they continued to put up a really tough fight. It feels so good to have made it again.”

Though the sound structure and experience of Kent Denver took the trophy in this matchup, the hustle and heart from the Fountain Valley Danes was nearly tangible.

Fountain Valley senior midfielder Sam Bermingham seemed to be everywhere on the field. He played with a bandage on head, just missing on crosses and shots on the offensive, and stopping the Sun Devils perfect strikes from reaching goal.

“It was such a great season. I mean, I am so proud to be playing with these kids, for this school,” Bermingham said. “We never thought we were going to make it this far, we never thought we’d be playing on this professional field, or getting second place. It’s an amazing feeling.

“It’s been seven years since our school has made it and it would have been great to win it but second place isn’t that bad. Being next to these players is everything.”

COMMERCE CITY — Top-seeded Kent Denver topped No. 6-seeded Fountain Valley, 2-0, to win the 3A boys soccer championship on Saturday.

Max Gottesfeld gave Kent Denver the lead in the 63rd on a penalty kick, and Rory Buck put the game away a few minutes later.

  • RPI data for all seven classifications of football from 2015

In 2016, all team sports will move to a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) formula for postseason qualification.

The RPI formula used will be the following:

    RPI = (¼ × WP) + (½ × OWP) + (¼ × OOWP)

We have compiled RPI data from the 2015 season for all classes below. This data will be specifically used, along with 2014 data, in Class 5A to create alignment via a waterfall system. (The 5A league alignment is available here.)

Teams were placed into the classifications that they will play in during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Teams moving up or down a classification had their schedule adjusted to their new class in order to normalize their RPI relative to that classification.

Any agreements to play non-league contests cannot be finalized until after the Legislative Council meets on January 28th.

Key: W (Win), L (Loss), WP (Winning Percentage), OWP (Opponents’ Winning Percentage), OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents’ Winning Percentage), SOS (Strength of Schedule).

This alignment, which is being forwarded by the football committee, needs to be approved at the Legislative Council in January 2016. Note that it has been updated at 11:15 a.m. on Nov. 13.

This alignment is subject to corrections and needs to be voted on by the football committee at their meeting in December.

  • Winter sports season begins with practice on Thursday

It snowed Wednesday, so it makes sense that winter sports practice begins on Thursday.

Boys and girls basketball, hockey, boys and girls skiing, girls swimming and diving, and wrestling are all set to begin their 2015-16 seasons. The first scrimmage for all winter sports will be Nov. 18. Games are allowed to begin Dec. 1.

Thursday marks the start of a season that won’t end until March, with a break coming toward the end of December.

Though it seems a long way away now, the first championship of the winter season belongs to girls swimming. That meet is Feb. 12-13.

After that, the three-day spectacle that is the state wrestling tournament at the Pepsi Center is Feb. 18-20. The skiing state championships are Feb. 25-26 in Aspen.

Hockey’s title game is March 5 in Loveland, and then the state basketball championships are March 10-12 at different venues around the state.

    (4) Evergreen 4, (1) Cheyenne Mountain 3

AURORA — In a semi-bizarre Class 4A semifinal showdown between No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 4 Evergreen at Legacy Stadium, held with snow banks around the edges of the field and featuring a controversial goal, the Cougars found a way to sneak into the title game with a 4-3 victory.

Evergreen (16-2-1 overall) took a commanding lead off a Brock Anderson penalty kick goal in the 31st minute and a Ryan Gutberlet score in the 37th minute to make it 2-0. The Indians (15-3) got one back when Luke White won a scramble for the ball with Cougar keeper Logan Westgard and placed one in the right corner to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 20 seconds to go before the break.

The first half was, well, rather normal.

Then the second half began and chaos ensued. After a Steve Belrose header nudged the lead to 3-1 a few minutes after the break, Cheyenne Mountain needed a goal to keep its hopes alive. White delivered again, but this time the goal, as video, which isn’t used for replay at the high school level, but was seen in the press box, showed that the ball actually went through a hole in the right side of the net.

The goal was not only controversial, but simply shouldn’t have counted. Nonetheless, with 21 minutes to go, the Indians had new life as they trailed 3-2. That is, until Gutberlet, a freshman striker, all but sealed Evergreen’s title game appearance with his second goal of the game with 2:18 on the clock to make it 4-2. Cheyenne Mountain’s Sam Kilimann did score with 23 seconds left, but the Cougars prevailed.

Gutberlet, second on the team in goals with 10, has helped lead an offensive outburst for Evergreen in the playoffs. After scoring a total of four goals in their last four regular season games while going 2-1-1, the Cougars have exploded for 18 goals in four postseason contests.

“During the playoffs, we’ve stepped it up,” Gutberlet said. “Brock, Steve, and some of the other guys on the team are just racking up the goals right now. We are moving the ball really well.”

The first-year player has been at the forefront of the offensive fireworks, as well.

“My first goal was a really good touch by my friend Michael Belrose,” he said. “It was perfect. He laid it in and I shot. Second half got a little hectic, but we managed to pull it out.”

Evergreen, who lost to eventual state champion Cheyenne Mountain 1-0 in the semifinals two years ago, will be making their third appearance in a boys soccer state championship game. The Cougars lost to Mullen in the 4A finals in 2011 and beat Fort Collins in 1989, the last season of unclassified play.

“This is my freshman year and now we’re going to state,” Gutberlet said. “It’s awesome.”

    (2) The Classical Academy 4, (11) Standley Lake 1

The Classical Academy lost one of 4A’s best players in the first half of their semifinals game against Standley Lake.

Titus Grant, with 29 goals on the season, tied for the most in the classification, earned a second yellow card after the ref called a controversial penalty on him for a a collision with the Gators’ keeper on a fifty-fifty ball with 11:31 to go before the break. The Titans, the No. 2 seed in the bracket, were down a man the rest of the game.

No matter, as TCA rode Grant’s first goal, an amazing one from about 45 yards out and only 33 seconds in, and goals by Jaden Borja, Aaron Peck, and Anders Carlson, not to mention stifling defense, to a 4-1 victory.

The Classical Academy (18-1) will be making their fifth appearance in the past six years in a boys soccer state title game. They were the 3A runner-up in 2010, 2011, and 2013 and lost to Air Academy in the 4A finals last year. The Titans will face Evergreen in the 4A title game without Grant, who, by rule with a second yellow card, will be suspended for one contest.

Standley Lake (13-6) got a gorgeous goal on a free kick by senior forward Nick Rosser with 22 minutes left, but the Gators were mostly smothered otherwise. The No. 11 seed in the tournament, Standley Lake took down No. 22 Montrose, No. 6 Niwot, and No. 3 Battle Mountain during their Cinderella march to the Final Four.

The 4A state championship game will be played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City this Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

  • Overland’s De’Ron Davis commits to Indiana for boys basketball

Overland’s De’Ron Davis, the state’s consensus top boys basketball prospect in the 2016 class, committed to Indiana in a ceremony at his school on Thursday afternoon.

Davis’ announcement was streamed live by 9News.

“First off, (Indiana coach) Tom Crean, he’s been there for so long. He’s been there since my eighth grade year,” Davis said on the 9News stream. “So I have a real good connection with him.

“But just when I took my visit, the family atmosphere I’ve seen at Indiana and how they compete everyday in practice, getting each other better. That really stuck out to me, and led to my decision.”

Davis, a forward who is listed at 6-foot-10, 240 pounds, picked Indiana over his other finalist, Mississippi State. He helped lead Overland to the Class 5A boys basketball championship last March. With him back, the Trailblazers are expected to be a favorite to repeat.

Davis has averaged double digits in scoring all three seasons he’s played for Overland. Last season, he averaged 16.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and 5.1 blocks per game.

The senior is already fourth on the career list for blocks with 320, and if he stays near his pace from last season — 139 — he will break the record of 409. Davis will also likely climb into the top-10 on the career list for rebounds this season.

Davis racked up all kinds of offers during his nation-wide recruitment, but it ultimately came down to Indiana and Mississippi State. Also included in his offers were national programs like UCLA, Connecticut and Arizona.

He was a four-star prospect according to ESPN.com, 247Sports.com, Rivals.com and Scout.com. All four services list him as a top-50 national prospect in the 2016 class.

Davis plays club basketball for the Colorado Hawks.

The early signing period for the 2016 class opened on Wednesday. Davis is the latest boys basketball player to announce his college choice.
