The honors continue to roll in for Cherokee Trail senior Shannon Webb.

Named CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A player of the year and Colorado’s Gatorade volleyball player of the year last week, this week she became an All-American.

MaxPreps selected Webb, an outside hitter, to their second team as part of their 2015 All-American Girls Volleyball Team. Webb helped Cherokee Trail win the 5A championship while leading all players in the state with 516 kills, an average of 4.8 per set. She also had 256 digs, 76 blocks and 34 aces.

Webb has signed to continue her career in college with American University in Washington D.C.

  • Snow day postpones many events around the state on Tuesday

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

An overnight snowstorm affecting much of the state on Tuesday has caused a number of schools and school districts to cancel classes.

As a result, a majority of the games, meets and tournaments scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed, and many practices are also affected. The CHSAA office is also closed.

“We advise fans and parents to check with their schools before attending an event today to be sure it has not been postponed,” said CHSAA commissioner Paul Angelico.

There is no bylaw that prohibits teams from competing on days their school is closed, but many districts have a policy of cancelling after-school activities on days that classes are cancelled.

  • Hockey rankings: Lewis-Palmer climbs up to No. 6

Monarch has a firm hold on the No. 1 spot in this week’s hockey rankings, a position they have held since the start of the season.

Three of the top four teams from last week’s ranking remain intact, with Cherry Creek jumping one spot to come in at No. 4.

Lewis-Palmer made waves last week with a 3-2 win over Steamboat Springs. That win helped the Rangers jump from No. 9 to No. 6.

Steamboat kept their spot at No. 7.

Mountain Vista fell to No. 9 after falling to Monarch, but retained enough votes to stay inside the top 10.

There were no new teams added to the rankings this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, the poll will release each Monday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Three new No. 1 teams atop polls

The CHSAANow.com girls basketball polls saw three new No. 1 teams crowned this week, including Highlands Ranch, who takes over the No. 1 spot in Class 5A.

It is the biggest shift at the top of the polls since the start of basketball season.

The big story of the week came as ThunderRidge fell to Cherry Creek, 32-27. The Grizzlies had held the top spot in 5A since the preseason poll. But the Bruins couldn’t capitalize on the win. They turned around and lost their next game to Broomfield, which kept them firmly in the No. 7 spot this week.

Poudre and Loveland were the two new teams added to the 5A rankings as they come in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Sand Creek was one of two teams to hold on the top this week, as they remain No. 1 in the 4A poll. Mesa Ridge jumped from No. 3 to No. 2, continuing their climb and showing that they intend to be a force this year, much like they were in 2014 when they won the 4A title.

Joining the 4A rankings this week is Pueblo East, who comes in at No. 10. The Eagles started the season at 1-2, but have played well enough lately to earn the votes needed to crack the top 10.

Pagosa Springs takes the top spot in the 3A rankings away from Manitou Springs, despite the Mustangs starting 4-0.

In fact, the Mustangs received six first-place votes last week, only to get two this week. Manitou falls to No. 3 in this week’s poll.

Lamar made a two-spot jump this week to come in at No. 7 and Grand Valley comes in at No. 10 as the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings.

Yuma remains firmly at the top of the 2A rankings and had a nice showing last week, going 3-0. The big jump in that class was Wray leaping from No. 9 to No. 5. They got the attention of the voters by taking Yuma to the limit and only falling to the Indians 69-66. Highland and Sanford break in as the two newcomers to the 2A polls, landing at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

With Idalia’s 48-43 loss to Otis, the Wolves fell out of the top spot in the 1A rankings. That helped Otis break into the top 10 where they come in at No. 7 this week. Kim at No. 8 and Briggsdale at No. 10 also joined this week’s rankings.

Sangre de Cristo takes to the top spot this week, jumping from No. 3 to No. 1.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Chatfield jumps into 5A poll

    Chatfield Chaparral boys basketball
Chatfield boys basketball is ranked No. 10 this week. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

Once again, there were minimal changes to the top of the CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings.

Overland, Longmont, Colorado Springs Christian School, Sanford and Fleming all maintain their positions as the No. 1 teams in their respective classes. And while new teams made their way into this week’s set of polls, it appears that taking down the top teams in every class is going to be a formidable challenge.

The Class 5A poll might’ve had the most interesting turnaround since last week. Cherokee Trail certainly got the attention of a lot of teams with their 85-81 win over Denver East. The win helped the Cougars jump from No. 10 to No. 6.

Eaglecrest and Regis Jesuit each climbed two spots and remain undefeated on the young season.

On the strength of a 4-1 start, Chatfield joins the 5A rankings, coming in at No. 10 this week.

In 4A, the top seven teams remain the same from last week, with only Pueblo West and Sand Creek changing positions. The two teams swapped spots, putting the Cyclones at No. 5 and the Scorpions at No. 6.

The largest set of newcomers to any poll took place with the 4A rankings as Vista Ridge, Thomas Jefferson and Conifer come in this week and occupy the last three spots of the top 10.

Very few changes took place in the 3A poll as there were no newcomers. Lutheran and DSST-Stapleton each jumped two spots with Lutheran landing at No. 5 and DSST-Stapleton coming in at No. 7.

Dayspring Christian jumps into the 2A poll this week at No. 10. They are the lone newcomer.

After going 3-0 last week, Meeker made a significant jump in the poll, going from No. 8 to No. 5 as they look to set themselves up as a contender. Paonia also jumped three spots from No. 9 to land at No. 6 this week.

The top nine teams of the 1A poll went unchanged, although Arickaree/Woodlin did move from No. 7 to No. 5. Norwood cracked the top 10 this week, taking the No. 10 spot.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

    (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

Week 1 was called “action-packed” and Week 2 didn’t let us down, starting with an explosive night on the first day of the week!

The remainder of our hoops week was solid, as well, with awesome in and out of state non-league action along with busy tournament play that gave hoop fans plenty of options.

    Week in review

    Monday, Dec. 7:

    Lewis-Palmer Pueblo Central boys basketball
    Pueblo Central’s Mike Ranson (5). (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
    • Our favorite tweet of the week came from our Colorado Springs supporter and club coach JJ Brimble when he stated, “It’s only Monday…but I’m gonna go ahead and give Mike the player of the week now…” referring to Northern Colorado commit Michael Ranson’s 59-point explosion on Monday night. Check out Ryan Casey’s recap of Ranson’s night and game winning bucket.
    • Matteo Busnardo scored 23 for Mullen but it wasn’t enough to top Max Castillo’s hot hand from 3-point land and 22 points as Mountain Range wins this one by 10.
    • Kyle Ryenearson’s 15 points took down our Ball Fever “sleeper” 4A squad Sierra this night as Broomfield won big by 17.
    • George Washington has faced an extremely tough early season schedule which saw them drop from our CHSAANow.com 5A top-10 and the DPL hopefuls slide continued as Boulder had three double digit scorers led by Luke Wilson’s 15 in the Panthers 10-point win.
    • Elijah Coleman’s 21 led Aurora Central cooling off a hot Monarch team to keep an eye on.
    • Denver South was looking to get on track and a 28-point effort from Chudier Bile helped them do just that with 65-59 win over Greeley West.
    • Wheat Ridge won big over Alameda with Nicco Young and Xavier Dreiling both scoring 11 in a lopsided win over Alameda. First-year coach Marquette Williams will pull the Alameda program together. FRESHMAN ALERT: Wheat Ridge has a big 6’8 youngster named Zeke Van Tuyl who scored his first varsity points with 6, and 1 rebound. Van Tuyl has the height and size to be a force.

    Tuesday, Dec. 8:

    • The Fever Crew made it out to the Ralston Round Up Tournament for an early FNE Warriors and Mountain View match up where we were treated to OT! Jose Orrantia and Dennis Landry were highly impressive scoring 20 points each but it wasn’t enough as sophomore Sindou Cisse calmly set up in the corner for this “walk-off” 3-point game-winner:

    • We also got to take in our two new members in the CHSAANow top-10 as Rock Canyon looked as if they belonged while drubbing a short-handed Arvada West by 28 points in tournament play. Noah Beck led balanced and tough Jags with 17 points.
    • Got to see Grand Junction this week as they took Legend down to the wire so Uintah’s 1-point fourth quarter comeback on them is even more impressive.
    • Ball Fever had to “dig” a bit for this one and check out Will Ross who had an 18-point, 13-rebound effort as Palmer handed Douglas County their first loss.
    • Balance is the name of the game for No. 2-ranked ThunderRidge and Austin Mueller’s 21 points led four Grizzlies in double figures as they took it to the up and coming Smoky Hill Buffaloes 81-46.
    • Thomas Bravo scored 18 points and Dakota Ridge was in control headed into the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold Legend off as the Titans win by two, 46-44. Riley Matticks led Legend with 12 in the win.
    • No. 4 Rangeview put a pounding on Poudre 85-40 led by Tyrel Randall’s 21 and junior Matt Johnson’s 13.
    • Our 4A No. 6 Pueblo West continued to roll as they took the 67-61 win over Liberty. TJ Clark Jr. with 21 in the loss.
    • There was anticipation of No. 1 Overland taking on sharp-shooting Kolton Peterson at Lakewood but Peterson had to miss the bout due to injury and the Trailblazers took full advantage romping 74-38 at Lakewood.
    • 4A No. 1 Longmont looks focused and balanced as three players scored in double digits in the 79-33 thumping of Weld Central.

    Wednesday, Dec. 9:

    Thursday, Dec. 10:

    • The young GW Patriots have faced an ultra strong non-league schedule so far but this night they cruised to a 17-point win over Columbine.
    • Look at DSST Green Valley Ranch rolling up some serious points in the 92-20 win over Atlas Prep led by Jadyn Michael’s 19 points.
    • Ponderosa linked a couple wins in a row as they got the 12-point win over Fort Morgan.
    • Grand Junction Central got defensive, only giving up four points in the fourth quarter to defending 4A champ Air Academy winning 48-35 on the road.
    • A little Ball Fever “dig” found a nice 17-point, 12-rebound “double-double” from Widefield’s Tre Pierre but it wasn’t enough as Alamosa won by 10.
    • Kolton Bachman (30) and Justinian Jessup combine for 50 points as No. 1 Longmont more than doubled Frederick 85-41.

    Friday, Dec. 11:

    • No. 1 Overland flexed their home court muscle only allowing 39 points to Chaparral while big De’Ron scored 22 and slick Reggie Gibson added 21 in the win.
    • Broomfield continues impressive early start with 26-point lopsided win over Fairview. Broomfield was balanced while the Knights provided another Ball Fever “dig” for stats with senior Chris Weatherly dropping 30 points, including 8-10 from 3-point arc!
    • We have a sneaky suspicion Chatfield will be busting it’s way into our CHSAANow top-10 this week and Matt Matthewes has your visual peek at the action in a solid win over Lincoln.
    • Cherokee Trail was point guard strong vs. a good Boulder squad Friday night with Jaizec Lottie scoring 15 points and speedy KJ Sapp dishing out 8 assists in a tight 2-point win for the Cougars.
    • Things looking better for Thomas Jefferson vs. 4A competition as they earned a 12-point win over Mead with Ravel Moody clocking a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double.
    • Jalen Sanders’ 17 points lifted No. 2 Valor to a 20-point win at Columbine.
    • Don’t look now but Holcomb has been beating some teams up and finished the week with a 15-point win over Palmer Ridge.
    • Fever predicted C. Trail and Denver East to get big wins on Friday night even after they beat one another up a bit earlier in the week. The Angels kept their end of the bargain up with a nice two-point road win at always touch Cherry Creek with transfer Daytone Jennings “straight going off!” for a 28-point, 14-rebound double-double. FRESHMAN ALERT: Chap has a very strong looking 6’4 freshman Bryce Matthews who scored 13 in the loss.
    • Coach Rogers has Grandview playing better than expected early behind some huge performances from Lashaun Duhart but they couldn’t slow down the red-hot Rock Canyon crew who took home the Ralston Round Up tournament 62-48. Colin Rardin scored 22 and soph Sam Masten added 20.
    • Windsor is a tough 4A squad and proved it vs. No. 4 5A Rangeview battling to the end but Tyrei Randall’s big boy 29-point, 6-steal, 3-assist “stat-stuffin” effort earned the Raiders the win.
    • Denver South’s roster is looking a lot more settled and it showed as they played Aurora Central tough but Ladarius Thomas exploded for 30 points as the Trojans won late by 3.
    • Is it possible for our 5A No. 6 squad to be doing things quietly? Colbey Ross and the Raptors continue lopsided wins 84-45 at Falcon.

    Saturday, Dec. 12:

    • The Legend Titans will take a slight drop in our 5A top 10 as they lost in the Smoky tournament final to a game Lakewood squad that went unbeaten in the tourney and knocked off Legend by two in the finale.
    • Rivalry renewed as Windsor took down Thompson Valley with Colton Mclean scoring 27 points and seven 3-pointers!
    • “All Aboard!!!!” the Raider train that is rolling as Rangeview swept through the Poudre/Fort Collins tourney and in the final “football tough” Elijah Reed dropped a season high 21 points. The Raiders have a ton of weapons!
    • What a week for Cherokee Trail as they finish with 17-point win over Highlands Ranch and it was Ronnie Barfield’s turn to lead with 13-point, 5-rebound day.
    • Did not expect the CO Springs “Braggin’ Rights” game of Doherty and Sand Creek to turn into a laugher but Brevin Brimble and Dalven Brushier combining for 48 points, 24 each heated things up on a cold night for the 88-54 win.
    • Another top-10 squad not being discussed a lot yet is the No. 7 Regis Raiders. Their showdown with Denver East was postponed so we didn’t get a close look at them but the Raiders took their show on the road and won an out of state tourney over Pinnacle, Ariz. Geoff Kelly is ready to lead and scored 18 points in the final.
    • No stats submitted unfortunately but Pueblo West and Pueblo South looking to stay firmly in the 4A top 10 as they scored 92 and 88 points respectively in Saturday wins!
    • “Ummm….uhhhhh” remember way back at the top of this when we talked about Michael Ranson lighting up 59 and claiming player of the week honors on Monday? Well he capped that thought with a 52-point blast for Pueblo Central in blowout over Summit.

  • Christian McCaffrey finishes second in Heisman Trophy voting

NEW YORK — Former Valor Christian running back Christian McCaffrey fell just short in his quest for the 2015 Heisman Trophy.

Alabama’s Derrick Henry was voted as the top football player in the country. McCaffrey, a sophomore at Stanford, finished second, and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson finished third.

Henry totaled 1,832 points, ahead of McCaffrey’s 1,539. Watson finished with 1,165 points. Henry also had the most first-place votes with 378, McCaffrey had 290 and Watson had 148.

McCaffrey did win the far-west vote by a large margin — he had 333 points to Henry’s 282 — but that’s not surprising considering that is the highest concentration of voters who took the time to watch him play.

The fact that McCaffrey plays on the West Coast may have hurt his chances. He was the MVP of the Pac-12 Championship Game, when he amassed 461 all-purpose yards, but prior to that game, 16 percent of the Heisman voters had already turned in their ballot.

No Colorado native, or Colorado high school football player, has ever won the Heisman Trophy. There have now been three runner-ups, including Byron “Whizzer” White of CU in 1937 and Mitchell’s Terry Miller, of Oklahoma State, in 1977. And McCaffrey.

At Stanford this year, McCaffrey set the single-season record for all-purpose yards with 3,496. That includes 1,847 rushing yards on 319 carries, giving him an average of 5.8 yards per rush.

His Heisman candidacy rose exponentially during the 2015 season, and climbed to a fever pitch after the Pac-12 Championship Game win against USC.

All the while, the support from his home state of Colorado continued to build. Valor Christian held an on-campus watch party for the announcement on Saturday that hundreds of people attended.

“I feel so much support from back home,” McCaffrey said on Friday, “and that’s one of the coolest things in the world for me.”

Then, on Monday, he was named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

It was the culmination of an incredible season in which McCaffrey helped lead Stanford to an 11-2 season in 2015 with his all-around talents. That season will finish with an appearance in the Rose Bowl against Iowa on Jan. 1, 2016.

As a result, the awards rolled in.

Last week, McCaffrey was named a first-team Academic All-American. On Wednesday, he won the Paul Hornung Award, given to college football’s most versatile player.

And then, this weekend, he took a pretty important trip to New York.

The praise even extended to his fellow finalists.

“I call Christian, ‘Mr. Do-It-All,’” Alabama’s Henry said on Saturday.

None of this is too surprising to those who watched him play at Valor Christian from 2009-13. The only major difference now is that his level of play has captivated an entire country instead of just an entire state.

At Valor, McCaffrey set the Colorado high school record for career all-purpose yards when he amassed 8,839. He helped lead the Eagles to four consecutive state championships. He finished his career second in career points (848), touchdowns (141), and receiving touchdowns (46).

He was a two-time Gatorade player of the year. He was the CHSAANow Class 5A player of the year as a senior. In his four seasons, Valor Christian won four state championships.

And that’s only his football accomplishments. McCaffrey also starred in basketball, and qualified for the state track meet.

McCaffrey moved on to Stanford in the fall of 2014, but his high school career, though still fresh, has started to ascend to an “all-time great” status.

During the fall of 2015, McCaffrey transformed into Colorado’s Christian McCaffrey. He was the state’s representative — yes, for high school football primarily, but also for athletics as a whole.

McCaffrey’s two younger brothers, Dylan and Luke, play for Valor Christian’s football team, which won the 5A championship last weekend. Dylan is the starting quarterback, and is emerging as a major Division I prospect as a junior.

McCaffrey’s oldest brother, Max, is in his senior season as a wide receiver at Duke. He helped Valor win championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

McCaffrey would have become the youngest player to win the award. As it is, he will return to Stanford for his junior year in which he figures to be an early favorite in the 2016 Heisman race.

“I can work on everything,” McCaffrey said, adding that his Stanford coach David Shaw “always talks about being the most complete back you can be, and that comes with strength, speed, physicality and film study. Just getting better in every aspect. You’re never perfect, so there’s a lot of room for improvement that I’m excited to take on.”

The Valor alum said he enjoyed his time in New York as a finalist.

“I’m just trying to relish it all and take it all in because this is not guaranteed and going through this is pretty special,” McCaffrey said on Saturday.

He added that the Heisman Trophy didn’t even come onto his radar until he was announced as a finalist on Monday.

“Once you start worrying about all that — specific goals, and stats — that’s when things start to crumble,” McCaffrey said. “Football’s a team game, it takes everybody buying in to have success, and individual success comes from team success.”
