FORT COLLINS — Fossil Ridge’s cheer program is preparing for the 2015 CHSAA state spirit competition.

Their huge accomplishment at league set the bar high for this year’s competition season. Due to a few injuries, the SaberCats’ preparation for state is not what they had imagined. But the team believes their hard work and dedication over the past month will show this weekend as they perform their routine at State.

  • Cherokee Trail’s Shannon Webb named Gatorade player of the year for volleyball

Shannon Webb, an outside hitter at Cherokee Trail, was named volleyball’s Gatorade player of the year in Colorado on Tuesday.

Webb, a senior, helped lead Cherokee Trail to the Class 5A volleyball championship last month. With this award, she will be a finalist for the national player of the year award from Gatorade.

Webb, a second-team all-state pick last season, had 516 kills, 256 digs and 34 aces this season. Included were 17 kills in the state championship match against Denver East.

“I’ve yet to meet a more driven and dedicated athlete,” Cherokee Trail head coach Terry Miller said in a statement from Gatorade. “She has grown into one of the most formidable outside hitters in the state of Colorado, and opposing coaches have to keep this in mind when preparing to play us. Shannon was our starting outside hitter from the moment she came to Cherokee Trail, and she’s truly become almost scary with her power and accuracy.”

Webb is signed to play volleyball at American University in Washington D.C.

Lewis-Palmer’s Alexa Smith won the award last season.

  • Pueblo Central’s Michael Ranson scores 59 in boys basketball win against Falcon

Pueblo Central senior Michael Ranson had a game for the ages on Monday night, dropping 59 points, including the game-winning layup in his team’s 90-88 overtime win over Falcon in boys basketball.

Ranson also hit the 3-point shot at the end of regulation which sent the game to overtime.

“He was on fire … what a display,” Pueblo Central coach Brad Ranson — Michael’s father — told the Pueblo Chieftain. “He was taking good shots and had eight or nine assists as well.”

Ranson was also 19-of-19 from the free-throw line. The 19 attempts and 19 makes are also career highs, and the 19 free-throws made are tied for the 14th-most in a single game.

He also made eight 3-pointers on Monday.

Ranson, who led the entire state in scoring last season with a 25.6 per-game average, has scored more than 35 points in four of the five games he’s played in. He is averaging 40.6 points, which leads the state in all classes this year.

The 59 points is a new career high for Ranson, who has signed with Northern Colorado. It is also tied for the sixth-most in a single game in state history.

In his career, Ranson is averaging 21.4 points per game. The record for scoring average in a season is 38.8, set by Kim’s Lane Gooden in 1976.

As of last night, Ranson has 1,455 career points. He has a very good change to break into the top-10 in career points should he continue to average above his pace last season.

  • Valor Christian graduate Christian McCaffrey named Heisman Trophy finalist

Christian McCaffrey, a 2014 graduate of Valor Christian, was named one of three finalists for the Heisman Trophy on Monday evening.

McCaffrey, now a sophomore star at Stanford, will head to New York City for the award ceremony on Saturday. He joins Alabama running back Derrick Henry and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson as finalists.

The Heisman Trophy is awarded annually to the top player in college football. And McCaffrey certainly fits that description. He leads all Division I players with 3,496 all-purpose yards, breaking the record of 3,250 set by Barry Sanders in 1988.

The sophomore has done it all for Stanford this season, with 1,847 yards rushing, 540 receiving, and 1,109 in the return game. He has accounted for 15 total touchdowns this season, including two passing scores.

In a lot of ways, it mirrors what he did during his high school career at Valor Christian, where he was a four-year starter.

To this day, McCaffrey still holds state record for all-purpose yards in a career with 8,839. He’s also second in career points (848), touchdowns (141), and receiving touchdowns (46).

At Valor, where he was running back, slot receiver, defensive back and punter, he helped the Eagles to four state championships in his career, and was the CHSAANow Class 5A player of the year as a senior. He was also named the state’s Gatorade player of the year in 2012 and 2013.

But McCaffrey didn’t limit himself to football. He averaged 11.1 points and 2.5 assists per game as a four-year varsity player for the school’s basketball team. He also participated on the track team, and routinely qualified for the state meet.

This season’s award will be the 81st in Heisman history. The Heisman Trophy ceremony will be broadcast on ESPN at 6 p.m. Saturday.

No product of a Colorado high school has ever won the Heisman Trophy, though Loveland graduate Collin Klein was a finalist for the award in 2012 while at Kansas State. He finished third.

The closest a Colorado product has ever come to winning the trophy is a runner-up finish — twice.

Byron “Whizzer” White finished second in voting in 1937, the third year of the award. White played at the now-closed Wellington High School, and later became a Supreme Court Justice. He was inducted in the CHSAA Hall of Fame in 1998.

Then, in 1977, Mitchell graduate Terry Miller was second to Earl Campbell while at Oklahoma State. Miller was also fourth in 1976.

Colorado lineman Joe Romig was sixth in the voting in 1961. He graduated from Lakewood. He was inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame in 1993.

Stanford is set to play in the Rose Bowl against Iowa on Jan. 1, 2016 after winning the Pac-12 Championship Game against USC last weekend. McCaffrey was named the MVP of that game after amassing 461 all-purpose yards.

On Saturday, Valor Christian won the sixth football championship in school history, beating Pomona to win Class 5A. The team was led by quarterback Dylan McCaffrey, Christian’s younger brother. And Luke McCaffrey, another brother, was a freshman on the varsity team.

The trio’s oldest brother, Max, helped Valor Christian win state titles in 2009, 2010 and 2011. A wide receiver, he will finish his senior season at Duke after the New Era Pinstripe bowl on Dec. 26.

The boys are the sons of Lisa and Ed McCaffrey, who met while in college at Stanford. Lisa played soccer, and Ed played football. Ed went on to play for the Broncos, the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants over 13 seasons.

  • Hockey rankings: Steamboat Springs joins at No. 7

Steamboat Springs isn’t messing around. After a blistering 3-0-0 start to their season, the Sailors made their case to be one of the top hockey teams in the state.

    And the results followed suit.

The Sailors came in at No. 7 this week, the lone newcomer to the CHSAANow.com hockey rankings.

Monarch held their spot as the No. 1 team in the state after their 13-0 win over Summit last week. Regis Jesuit stayed at No. 2, but received no first place votes even with a 5-2 win over No. 9 Lewis-Palmer.

Dakota Ridge and Cherry Creek were the only other teams to receive first place votes. The Bruins, who won last year’s state title, took two votes and the Eagles snagged one. Dakota Ridge sits at No. 4 this week while Cherry Creek lands at No. 5, swapping spots with each other from the preseason poll.

No. 8 Denver East was the only ranked team who didn’t see action last week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, the poll will release each Monday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Ralston Valley jumps up in 5A

    ThunderRidge Ralston Valley girls basketball

Just like the boys, the top teams in all five CHSAANow.com rankings all held their positions this week.

ThunderRidge, Sand Creek, Manitou Springs, Yuma and Idalia all enter the second the week of the season as the No. 1 teams in their respective classes. But with competition starting off fast and furious in Week 1, it was inevitable that some changes would indeed occur.

In Class 5A, ThunderRidge looked like a top team as they jumped out to a 3-0 start, but it was Ralston Valley that started especially hot, going 3-0 last week and capping the run with a 55-29 win over Cherry Creek, who comes in at No. 7 this week. The Mustangs jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 this week.

Dakota Ridge is the lone newcomer to the rankings on the strength of wins against Rampart and Loveland. The Eagles land at No. 9.

Despite dropping their home opener to Poudre, Sand Creek remains the No. 1 team in 4A. They rebounded nicely with a win over Sierra.

Mesa Ridge looks like they could be returning to their state championship form of 2014 as they jumped from No. 8 to No. 3 and even snagged a first place vote in the process.

Two new teams jumped in the 4A poll this week with Berthoud (No. 9) and Golden (No. 10) all join the party.

Manitou Springs sure played like 3A’s  No. 1 team during their 74-34 win over Bishop Machebeuf. They followed that up with a win over Colorado Academy, jumping out to a quick 2-0 start.

The top eight teams in the 3A rankings went for a combined 13-0 last week, easily the best showing for any class.

A couple of 3-0 starts from Lamar and Trinidad helped both teams join the rankings this week, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Like Sand Creek, Yuma held on to their spot in the 2A rankings, despite an early loss. They still garnered nine first place votes this week.

The top six spots from the preseason rankings went unchanged this week. Although there was some shifting in the bottom three spots, Wray was the only new team to the poll as they jumped in at No. 9.

Prairie and Antonio join this week’s 1A poll at No. 6 and No. 10. Idalia held on to the top spot, though not unanimously as Kit Carson took one first place vote.

Flagler made the biggest jump in 1A this week, going from No. 8 to No. 4.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Arvada West, Rock Canyon join 5A poll

Arvada West is No. 8 in the 5A boys basketball rankings this week. (Dennis Pleuss)

The No. 1-ranked teams in this week’s CHSAANow.com basketball polls held steady, but a flurry of new teams were added.

With play beginning last week and most teams in action it was only a matter of time before the look and feel of the polls started shifting, specifically in the higher classes. But the top teams of Overland (5A), Longmont (4A), Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Fleming (1A) all held on to the top spots in their respective divisions.

The Class 5A poll saw the addition of two new teams in Arvada West at No. 8 and Rock Canyon at No. 9. The Wildcats started the season on a tear, taking down Smoky Hill, Northglenn and Mountain Range.

Rock Canyon overcame a season-opening loss to Eaglecrest and rattled off three straight wins of their own, good enough to crack this week’s poll.

In 4A, Valor Christian showed they can pose a threat to Longmont as the top seed in the class as they ran out defending champion Air Academy. But the most impressive jump this week came from Pueblo South, which jumped from No. 10 to No. 3 on the strength of a 63-59 win over Lewis-Palmer.

The Rangers only fell one slot thanks to a one-point win over Pueblo Central, which still looks like a good team despite the loss of Kobi Betts for the season.

Mead and Green Mountain are this week’s 4A newcomers, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

It was the 3A poll that look the most different from the preseason rankings. They added four new teams, a staggering number for any week. Bennett, Grand Valley, DSST-Stapleton and Eaton all jump into the top 10 this week.

It was Bennett who made the biggest impact, breaking at No. 5. They topped Lutheran (who jumped one spot this week to No. 7) 49-47 Friday. Grand Valley, DSST-Stapleton and Eaton came in at 8, 9 and 10.

No new teams were added to this week’s 2A rankings, but there was some shuffling that took place.

Rye fell two slots to No. 6 after a 61-57 loss to Alamosa and Sedgwick County jumped three spots from No. 8 to No. 5.

Three new teams jumped into 1A’s top 10 as Sierra Grande (No. 6), Wiley (No. 8) and Shining Mountain (No. 9) all jump into the basketball rankings for the first time this year.

Fleming was the only top seed to actually lose this week as they fell to Holyoke 68-65. Even with the loss, they held on to the top spot in this week’s rankings. Holyoke is ranked No. 4 in 2A.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Overland multi-sport athlete Alijah Halliburton announced on Twitter Sunday that he has committed to the University of Wyoming to play football.

In his senior season with the Trailblazers, Halliburton totaled 125 tackles, including five for a loss and two sacks. He averaged 12.5 tackles per game.

He also picked off one pass and returned one punt for a touchdown, his sole score of the year.

Halliburton is also a key contributor on the Overland basketball team. In the team’s season-opening win over George Washington, he scored 19 points while pulling down seven rebounds. In the spring, he competes on the track and field team.

He is the latest football commit for the Class of 2016.
