  • Jefferson names Nick Trombetta new football coach

Nick Trombetta has been named the new football coach at Jefferson, Saints athletic director Joe Generose said on Wednesday.

Trombetta, who has been as an assistant with Thornton since 2012, takes over a program that was 1-8 in 2015, and 0-9 the year before that. However, the Saints went 8-3 in 2013 and made the Class 2A playoffs.

“We feel great about this hire and think he will be very successful here at Jefferson,” Generose said.

Trombetta was an assistant head coach in charge of running backs and the special teams coordinator at Thornton. Prior to that, he was a head coach in a youth league from 2008-12, and was also a freshman assistant at Ranum in 2002.

“Becoming a head coach has been a goal of mine,” Trombetta said on Wednesday. “I am most excited to be part of the Edgewater community, and to be able to lay the foundation for a football program that the community, school, and most importantly the students can be prideful about. We are excited and ready for the process.

“The goal for the program will be to create a competitive culture that will not be comfortable with average. It is all one step at a time.”

Asked what made Trombetta stand out as a candidate, Generose said, “We were looking for a coach who had experience rebuilding a football program from the ground up and changing its culture. We believe that coach Trombetta not only has the experience in this area, but has an aptitude for connecting with all students and building positive relationships.”

Generose added that “football is arguably the most visible sport in high school and I believe athletics is a great indicator of how business is run inside the school.”

  • No. 6 Denver East boys basketball survives 3-point onslaught from No. 7 Chatfield

DENVER — As the basketball season reaches its climax with Denver East and Chatfield making their way into the Class 5A state tournament, both teams will be grateful for games like their showdown Monday night.

The Angels came away with the 74-70 win, but both teams emerged battle tested for March.

Denver East (8-4 overall) knows they have the ability to emerge from a tight game with a win and Chatfield now has the feeling of a heartbreaking loss that should make them hungry for postseason success.

“We knew it was going to be a battle down to the end,” Angels coach Rudy Carey said. “That is the best overall shooting team in the state.”

The Chargers (9-2) stayed in the game because of their overall ability to shoot the ball. The Angels were able to build double-digit leads five times throughout the contest, but each time saw it evaporate as Chatfield began to rain down 3-pointers.

The lack of size for Chatfield played a huge role as Angels forward Daytone Jennings became the focal point of the Denver East offense. Things only got worse for the Chargers when their big man Josh Frenette got into foul trouble and was forced to the bench.

“Josh is our biggest guy,” Chatfield coach Stephen Schimpeler said. “He’s our only biggest guy so it was certainly an issue when he went out.”

The Angels knew it too. So with Frenette on the bench, they continued to feed Jennings, who finished with a game-high 24 points.

“It made things amazing for us,” Jennings said. “He’s their only big guy so while he was out we just had to dominate the post.”

Frenette picked up his third foul in the third quarter and Schimpeler rolled the dice and kept him in the game. Carey had his offense attack him right away and the plan worked as he picked up his fourth foul the very next possession.

For the Chargers to stay in the game, they were going to have to rely on their ability to knock down 3-poiners. They were able to do that as Joe Miks, Lucas St. Germaine and Riley Welch all helped cut the East lead to a few as four. Chatfield made 12 triples as a team.

Welch led the Chargers with 23 points, but in the end it just wasn’t enough as the Angels came away with the win.

“I knew they wouldn’t quit, it doesn’t surprise me,” Schimpeler said. “I know we have a good team and whether we won, lost or drew here, I knew we a good team. We made too many mistakes tonight, but we are going to grow from it.”

And the Angels will also be better down the stretch for having to battle the way they did. Carey knows all too well that in order to come away with a state championship the ability to win tight games is crucial. It’s knowledge that he has passed down to his players.

“We appreciate this win,” Jennings said. “They’re a top-10 team and we need to beat top-10 teams.”

  • 2015 dietary guidelines for Americans

The 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans were released on January 7 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The main key messages that the newly released guidelines point out for healthy eating patterns are:

    • Follow a healthy eating pattern
    • Focus on variety, nutrient density, and amount.
    • Limit calories from added sugars and saturated fat, and reduce sodium intake.
    • Shift to healthier food and beverage choices.
    • Support healthy eating patterns for all.

    What are the Dietary Guidelines?

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans make recommendations based on current scientific and medical evidence every 5 years. The purpose of the guidelines is to help Americans have a healthy lifestyle and most importantly prevent disease.

The guidelines are used to direct nutrition policy such as with the National School Lunch Program, the WIC program, recommendations that health professionals make and other nutrition assistance programs.

What is important in the new dietary guidelines?

    Vegetables

Everyone should try to eat more vegetables every day! This means making your plate colorful with all types of vegetables to eat a variety of colorful vegetables. Eat a variety of dark green, red and orange, legumes (beans and peas), starchy, and other vegetables. Vegetables provide our bodies with Fiber and tons of nutrients every day!

    Fruit

Everyone should try to eat more fruit every day! You should try to eat whole fruit most of the time and make sure that you are eating a variety of fruit — all different colors, flavors and textures of fruit. Fruit provides us with Vitamin C, Fiber and lots of other nutrients!

*Whole fruit includes fresh, frozen, canned and dried varieties of fruit.

    Whole Grains

Everybody should try eating whole grain bread, pasta and brown rice in place of refined grains like white bread. Whole grains provide fiber, B-vitamins and many other important nutrients!

    Dairy

Almost all Americans should try to consume more dairy every day! Strive to get 3 servings of dairy each and every day. Dairy is packed with 9 essential nutrients that our bodies use every single day!

    Protein Foods

Everyone should try to eat a variety of protein foods including lean meat and poultry, eggs, legumes, nuts seeds and seafood. Most people need to consume more seafood. These foods not only provide protein, but are packed with other important nutrients.

    Other recommendations:

    • Cook or prepare food with oils instead of solid fats.

    • Limit added sugars to less than 10 % of your total daily calories. For someone that is consuming 1,200 to 2,000 calories per day, this means that no more than 120 to 200 calories should be coming from added sugars. This is about 7 to 12 teaspoons of sugar. Remember that a teaspoon is about 4 grams of sugar, and a gram of sugar is about 4 calories.

    • Limit saturated fat to less than 10 percent of your total daily calories. This didn’t change from the 2010 Dietary Guidelines. This recommendation is easily met if you stick to choosing lean protein foods and using oil instead of solid fats to prepare food with.

    • Reduce sodium consumption to 2300 milligrams per day. The majority of Americans consume very high amounts of sodium, almost 49 percent more than the recommended amount of sodium! The majority of people get too much sodium from eating processed foods and from convenience foods. If you cook or prepare food at home, you have a better chance of sticking to the recommendation because you can control how much sodium goes into your meal.

    • Exercise Regularly! Regular physical activity is essential to good health. Exercise and healthy eating work together as the best way to keep you in good health. Everyone should strive to get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity each week and do muscle strength training twice per week.

Nutrients that we don’t get enough of:

    • Calcium
    • Vitamin D
    • Potassium
    • Dietary Fiber

Dairy provides an excellent source of Calcium and Vitamin D, and provides a good source of potassium. So, make sure to get your three servings of Dairy everyday!

Women should also try to get more Iron and pregnant women should try to get more iron and folate.

  • Boys basketball rankings: Rangeview takes over as No. 1 in 5A poll

    Rangeview Cherry Creek boys basketball
Rangeview is the new No. 1 team in the 5A boys basketball rankings. (Matt Minton/JacksActionShots.com)

There is a new king of the Class 5A CHSAANow.com boys basketball rankings. The undefeated Rangeview Raiders assumed the top spot after beating No. 5 ThunderRidge and No. 10 Cherokee Trail in the first full week of competition since the winter break.

To get to the top spot, they also got some help from Regis Jesuit, who got coach Ken Shaw’s 700th win by upsetting Overland. The Trailblazers would drop their second game of the season later in the week as they fell to Eaglecrest, who climbs to No. 2.

Regis Jesuit climbed to No. 3 thanks to the win over the Trailblazers, but an upset loss to Fossil Ridge Saturday night likely kept them from a higher ranking this week.

Though many teams changed spots from the previous set of rankings that was released Dec. 21, there were no new teams added to the 5A poll this week.

In 4A, Longmont remains the top team, getting 15 of 21 first-place votes. The other six went to a streaking Pueblo South team that has proven to be a legitimate contender in the class.

The Colts take over the No. 2 spot after Golden dispatched Valor Christian on Friday night.

The loss also saw Lewis-Palmer rise to No. 3. The Rangers looked impressive in their route of Sand Creek on Wednesday. They then had to battle for a tight road win against Vista Ridge on Friday. Despite losing the game, the Wolves jumped into this week’s poll at No. 10.

Evergreen also broke into the 4A rankings, coming in at No. 9.

Defending 3A champion CSCS remains at No. 1 in class, despite two losses at the City of Champions Tournament at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

The Denver School of Science and Tech is becoming a major presence in the 3A poll as both the Stapleton and Green Valley Ranch campuses made significant jumps this week.

Stapleton lands at No. 3 this week while Green Valley Ranch comes in at No. 6.

The Eaton Reds also made an impressive leap, landing at No. 5, up four spots from the previous rankings.

Liberty Common is the lone newcomer in 3A, landing at No. 10.

With 8 of 10 first-place votes, Sanford remains the top team in the 2A rankings.

Paonia made the biggest jump in the 2A poll, going from No. 8 to No. 5. The only new team for 2A this week is Dayspring Christian who rounds out the poll at No. 10.

The 1A poll was the only other set of rankings to see a new team emerge at the top. Thanks to a buzzer-beater loss to Sedgwick County on Saturday, Fleming fell out of the top spot and South Baca is the new top team in the class.

Rocky Mountain Lutheran is the lone team to break into the 1A poll as the Eagles come in at No. 10 this week.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Top teams stay put after the break

    Highlands Ranch Legend girls basketball
Highlands Ranch maintained its grip on the No. 1 spot in the 5A girls basketball poll. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Consistency would be the best word to describe the CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings this week. While some new teams played their way into some of the polls, the overall tops teams continued to do what top teams tend to do: win.

Highlands Ranch fought off a good effort from defending Class 5A champion Broomfield to maintain their spot atop the 5A rankings.

The close game did get the attention of quite a few voters as it helped Broomfield jump two spots to land at No. 4.

No new teams were able to crack their way into this week’s 5A rankings.

For the most part, the 4A poll looks about the same as it did going into the winter break. Sand Creek remains the No. 1 team in the class and Mesa Ridge, Valor Christian, Longmont and Pueblo West all kept their spots at 2-5 respectively.

Holy Family made the biggest jump in 4A, gaining two spots to come in at No. 6.

Pueblo East broke into the 4A rankings at No. 10.

All 10 teams from the previous 3A rankings remained in this week’s poll. Pages Springs holds on to their spot at No. 1 with Sterling keeping a firm grasp on the No. 2 position.

Manitou Springs regained some first-place votes after beating a couple of top-10 teams in Lutheran and Lamar last week.

Moffat County jumped two spots to land at No. 7, the biggest jump for any team in 3A.

The 2A poll saw more changes than any other class this week. Yuma is still firmly in the No. 1 position, but Haxtun jumped two spots to land at No. 5.

There were three new teams to the rankings as Soroco (No. 7), Ignacio (No. 9) and Evangelical Christian (No. 10) all played their way into the top 10.

Despite not playing a game since Dec. 17, Sangre De Cristo maintains the top position in the 1A rankings. Kit Carson, who received a couple of first-place votes remains at No. 2.

Heritage Christian jumped into the 1A poll at No. 8 this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Mountain Vista is climbing. After scoring 14 goals in two games last week — while only surrendering three — the Golden Eagles jumped from No. 8 to No. 5 in this week’s CHSAANow.com hockey rankings.

Monarch remains the top team in the poll after three wins last week, including a nail biter over No. 6 Dakota Ridge.

Cherry Creek jumped to No. 3 and also held off a comeback attempt from the Eagles.

There were no new teams added to this week’s poll. The current teams in the top 10 have remained in the poll since Dec. 7.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, the poll will release each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

All we can say, is WOW! If the first week of 2016 is any indication, we are in store for some exciting days ahead in our big school hoops, folks.

What a week of upsets, action, and one of our best in the state reaching the 700-win milestone. Congrats Coach Shaw!

    Week in review

    Saturday, Jan. 2:

Cherry Creek Pine Creek boys basketball

    • Coach Carey and staff have done a tremendous job with a new-look Angels squad returning from a strong Hawaii tournament effort to now knock off No. 2 ThunderRidge on their home floor 63-59. An early off-the-court issue could have been a huge distraction for the No. 8 Angels but instead has become a rallying cry for a squad whose senior leaders scored 19 (Buckmelter & Harrell), supported by Daytone Jenning’s 13-point, 8-rebound night in a tough environment. T-Ridge is balanced and had four players score in double figures but East came in with confidence and carried that throughout the match.
    • Cherry Creek won 68-60 over Pine Creek.
    • Grandview was on a nice early roll with some surprising early wins but their first big time test came in the version of No. 5 Regis visiting and the Raiders’ balance was on display with leader Geoff Kelly scoring 18 points in the 20-point win on the road. Jack Eberhard has your action shots.
    • Coach Brad Jansen has started a sweet tradition at Sitting Eagle gym with an annual “alumni” game each January and this year before the “old heads” returned to the court the young Warriors treated the crowd to an exciting 76-69 win over George Washington. Kyle Lukasiewicz is averaging 30 points per game in 2016! Yes, he’s only played one 2016 game so far but boy was he impressive from the field and line along with Ryan King’s 20 points partnered with James Walsh’s 13 getting done vs. the young Patriots. Multitalented Jervay Green led GW with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists.
    • The 4A action was down south on Saturday as Pueblo Central took down Sierra by eight and in our Ball Fever “dig” for stats this week we found hot shooting David Simental scoring 33 points on 7-of-11 3-pointers for Pueblo West who took down Canyon City.
    • Rock Canyon, currently No. 9 in our poll, looking to rise as they again flex their early season muscle with blowout victory over young Smoky Hill. The Jags are usually the picture of balance but this night sophomore Sam Masten played with “chip” scoring 27 points while snagging 7 rebounds.
    • Chatfield had four players score in double figures, led by Cameron Pearson’s 14 in their win over Boulder. Landon Taliaferro led all scorers with 22 for the Panthers in the loss.

    Monday, Jan. 4:

    Doherty vs. Lincoln boys basketball
Doherty continued to roll in beating Lincoln. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
    • There may not be a hotter squad right now than Doherty!
    • Pueblo South kept its winning ways alive behind 20 points from Noah Sanders in the 7-point win over Falcon.
    • Devante Jones score 17 and Anthony McFraland 18 but it wasn’t enough to stop a young Highlands Ranch team from getting a big win over Dakota Ridge.
    • How about a 30-6 fourth quarter? The FNE (Montbello) Warriors are flying under the radar but a 25-point win at Sand Creek will open up some eyes for sure. Melek Bar led on this night with 18 points and 4 steals.

    Tuesday, Jan. 5:

Regis Jesuit Overland boys basketball Ken Shaw 700

    • Our guy Ryan Casey all over Regis’ upset of No. 1 Overland and Coach Shaw’s sweet 700th!
    • 4A No. 1 Longmont continues to hit on all cylinders as Justinian Jessup scores 26 in their blowout over Centaurus.
    • Despite Antonio Capley’s 20 points Monarch was able to take home the bragging rights in win over rival Ralston Valley.
    • Did not see this coming! Charlie Davis scored 22 as D’Evelyn went into Thomas Jefferson and proved they are a 4A force to be reckoned with winning by 22.
    • Holy Family starting to get some 4A votes in our poll and they pulled off a late two-point win at Frederick. Young Kyle Helbig with 12.
    • Sophomore Sam Masten continues to produce for Rock Canyon and he poured in 19 at Fort Collins to help the Jags win.
    • Aurora Central showed its balance in winning at Smoky Hill by five points with a 17-8 fourth quarter advantage.

    Wednesday, Jan. 6:

    Lewis-Palmer Sand Creek boys basketball
Lewis-Palmer continues to roll. (Josh Watt/CHSAANow.com)
    • The Fever Crew made it out to ThunderRidge at Rangeview for our top-5 match up. Always impressed with the Raiders guard play but on this night it was big man Elijah Reed who dominated the paint with 16 points, nine rebounds to go along with Tyrei Randall’s game high of 20. The Raiders took on 26-9 vs. the Grizzlies and never looked back!
    • Lewis-Palmer grabbing attention down south and Dan Moorhman was on the scene.
    • Eaglecrest is one talented roster from top to bottom and they continue to roll with 24-point win over Smoky HIll to start league play.
    • Jalen Sanders put in 21 points as Valor passed a test at Wheatridge winning by 12.
    • Unfortunately for Mullen they had to be the guys to face Overland after their first loss and the Trailblazers raced to a 38-point win but it was costly as De’Ron Davis was ejected and will have to sit the next one out. Another Overland weapon led the way in Tyler Stephenson who scored 17.
    • Much needed win for the program as Gateway gets one on the road at Fairview. Demario Williams with 18 in the win.
    • Expected a track meet here and Chatfield did their part ringing up 78 points in win over Lakewood.
    • Cherokee Trail will be in jeopardy of losing their top-10 ranking after taking an early Centennial league loss to Cherry Creek.

    Thursday, Jan. 7:

    • Senior leadership at the guard spot is a great thing to have and Elijah Coleman and Ladarius Thomas combined for 43 points in Aurora Central’s nice win over Highlands Ranch.
    • David Simental had 24 points as he continues to be the scoring force for Pueblo West in their win over Montrose.
    • Abraham Lincoln has taken some tough losses of late but they righted the ship this night with a 3-point win at Broomfield. Umar Jalloh scored 20 in the win.
    • “Stat stuffer” performance:  CJ Jennings scores 26 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks for Sierra in win over Mesa Ridge. Kid was all over the floor!
    • Three seniors in double figures again for the East Angels as they protect the home floor vs. a young Chaparral team. Dominic Coleman scored 17 in the loss while Daytone Jennings led all with 18.
    • A 27 -point, 12-rebound double-double from Dalven Brushier helped hot Doherty make the comeback win after being down at halftime but end up beating Pine Creek by 18.

    Friday, Jan. 8:

    Eaglecrest Overland boys basketball generic
Eaglecrest knocked off Overland on Friday. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
    • Overland was without big De’Ron and Jack Eberhard was on hand to watch Eaglecrest take advantage in this top 5 match up! Mark your calendar when this rematch takes place at Eaglecrest!
    • Clay Verk helped ThunderRidge bounce back in a major way scoring 25 points to lift the Grizz over Aurora Central by 27.
    • Had to be a low scoring slug-fest as Lewis-Palmer wins by a field goal 39-36 at Vista Ridge.
    • Matt Minton was our guy snapping the shots as upstart Grandview cooled off a Cherry Creek squad that has been playing well. Lachaun Duhart with 19.
    • In a battle of two squads who have been a bit perplexing to figure out George Washington got the signature win they’ve been looking for on the road at Legend with Daylen Kountz leading the way with 23 points, four rebounds.
    • It would take a huge effort to take down Valor and Kayden Sund’s 18 points led four Golden players in double figures to help fuel the upset Friday night. Look for Golden to firmly plant themselves in top 10.
    • Denver South won by 20 at Pueblo East. A lot of talent and the roster is coming together for the Rebels. Connor Nelson with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double this night.
    • Another impressive win for Monarch scoring 28 fourth-quarter points to come back on Fossil Ridge.
    • David Simental continue to get a look as player of the week scoring 30 points in Pueblo West’s blowout of Discovery Canyon.
    • Matt Mathewes was on the scene as streaking Chatfield pulled away from Bear Creek.

    Saturday, Jan. 9:

Regis Jesuit Fossil Ridge boys basketball
Fossil Ridge upset Regis Jesuit. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
    • The Sabercats are tough at home and Saturday Fossil Ridge handed Regis its first loss of the season. Braxton Bertolette with 24 points, seven rebounds.
    • Doherty is feeling it! They had nine players contribute to the scoring column led by Dalven Brushier’s 18 in the 34-point win over Liberty.
    • Rangeview may have just locked up the new No. 1 ranking with the week they had knocking off another top-10 team in Cherokee Trail 59-55. They have a date with Regis coming up that should be great!
    • 4A No. 1 Longmont will stay right there at No. 1 as they close the week with a 30-point win over Skyline.
