DENVER – For the first time in a long time, T.J. Shelton was able to take a deep breath Saturday night and exhale all the pressure that had been building up for so long.

Shelton overcame the weight of expectations that comes with pursuing four consecutive state championships, and he did it with a little drama. The Meeker senior found himself trailing early in the Class 2A 170-pound title match at Pepsi Center, but turned it around with a pair of near falls to earn a 16-7 major decision over Centauri’s Chris Martin.

The victory placed Shelton in elite company as he became the 19th wrestler in state history to become a four-time champion.

“This one was above and beyond the other ones,” said Shelton, who finished the season with a 42-1 record. “I just think since there was so much at stake, I’m just so relieved. All the pressure is just relieved, so I think that was the big factor in how this one was so much different.”

After pinning his way through the first three rounds, Shelton faced some adversity against Martin. The Centauri senior, who had also pinned his way into the finals, scored two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-2 lead.

Shelton turned it around though, opening the second period with a reversal and a three-point near fall. Even after Martin added two points on a reversal, Shelton escaped and scored a takedown. He put it away with a dominant showing in the final period.

“The good thing about T.J. is he’s wrestled a lot of matches. He’s been down, and he’s lost matches,” Meeker coach J.C. Watt said. “He doesn’t get rattled when he gets down … he just wrestles the whole six minutes.”

The milestone was made that much sweeter by the fact that teammates Casey Turner and Devon Pontine also won state titles. The Cowboys also ended up with the team championship, edging Rocky Ford by one point.

Having to sit around while waiting for the last match of his prep career, Shelton said he spent the majority of Saturday cheering on his teammates.

“That was one of his goals, wanting to be a four-time state champion,” Watt said. “It’s been a long road, a really long road. I’m sure sitting around today was a little stressful on him, just waiting, waiting, waiting.

“He got down early, but he just showed his never-give-up attitude.”

It was Shelton’s third consecutive title at 170 pounds. He pinned Centennial’s Jose Cisneros a year ago and pinned Lyons’ Jon Hickman in 2014. As a freshman he posted an 8-2 decision over Del Norte’s Austin McDonald at 160 pounds.

Before the finals could get underway, a video was shown on the scoreboard at Pepsi Center after the Parade of Champions. Each of the previous 18 four-time state winners were shown, including Paonia’s Jesse Reed, who accomplished the feat last February.

“It was excitement knowing that I had the chance to be on there, and I was right there,” Shelton said of watching the presentation. “I was just so close to achieving that. I was one match away. It was unreal.”

When asked to reflect back on his first championship, Shelton – who will wrestle at Colorado School of Mines in Golden next fall – paused briefly before answering.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” he said. “It feels like ages, but then again, when you think of it, it feels like yesterday. I can remember every moment so vividly, it’s just amazing.”

The CHSAA state hockey bracket was released Sunday and, as expected, Monarch and Mountain Vista go into the tournament as the top seeds.

The seeding is based on the final regular season standings with in the Foothills and Peak leagues.

Defending champion Cherry Creek will have a tough road ahead of them as they sit in the No. 4 Foothills spot, which means a potential showdown with the Golden Eagles in the second round.

The Bruins beat Mountain Vista 3-2 in the regular season finale on Saturday.

Regis Jesuit earns the No. 2 Foothills spot which means that a rematch from the Raiders’ 3-0 loss to the Coyotes wouldn’t come until the state championship.

Also noteworthy is that Valor Christian, under first year coach George Gwozdecky is back in the hockey playoffs for the first time since 2013.

The first two rounds of the tournaments will be played at host sites with the Final 4 and state championship games being played at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.

The Final 4 games will be played Mar. 3 with the state championship game two days later on Mar. 5.

    Playoff basketball is officially underway.

Saturday, the CHSAA selection committee released the boys and girls brackets for the Class 5A and 4A state tournaments.

And while the delay the 5A boys bracket was somewhat extended, it proved to be well worth the wait.

Defending 5A boys champion, Overland comes in as a No. 1 seed and is joined by Rangeview, Eaglecrest and ThunderRidge as the top teams heading into play, which will begin Wednesday.

Regis Jesuit, Doherty, Cherokee Trail and Chatfield round out the top eight teams as they all secured No. 2 seeds.

Early round games will be played at home sites with the Great 8 all coming in under one roof at the Denver Coliseum on Mar. 5.

The tournament will then move to Boulder, where the Final 4 and state championship games will be played at the Coors Events Center on Mar. 11 and 12 respectively.

The 5A girls bracket had some drama when it came to the No. 1 seeds. Lakewood edged out ThunderRidge as a top seed with the Grizzlies taking the No. 2 spot in the Tigers’ region.

Highlands Ranch and Grandview earned No. 1 spots with their high level of play from this year with defending champion Broomfield taking the last top seed in the bracket.

Games through the Sweet 16 will be played at home sites before the Great 8 games are moved to the Denver Coliseum on Mar. 4.

The 5A girls Final 4 will be played on Mar. 10 at the Coors Event Center and the state championship will be decided on Mar. 12.

For the 4A boys, Jonathan Scott will look to add to his family’s state basketball legacy.

The Lewis-Palmer Rangers come in as top seed in the 4A boys bracket and are arguably playing the best basketball in the state.

Valor Christian, Longmont and Pueblo West make up the other No. 1 teams in the tournament. After losing a strong senior class, defending champion Air Academy did not make the tournament this year.

The 4A boys tournament games will be played at home sites until the Final 4 begins at the Coors Events Center on Mar. 11.

For the 4A girls, Sand Creek will be out for redemption this year.

The Scorpions come into the 4A girls state basketball tournament as a No. 1 seed and are looking to complete the journey that they fell one win shy of only a year ago.

Valor Christian, Mesa Ridge and Longmont make up the other top seeds in the brackets. Valor Christian won the title last year, topping Sand Creek and claiming their first girls basketball crown.

Mesa Ridge earns a No. 1 seed after having a down year in 2015. The Grizzlies captured the 4A in 2014 and will look for their second championship in three years.

Since dropping the second game of the season, Longmont has been on an absolute tear, finishing the year with 21 consecutive wins.

The 4A playoff games will be played at home sites until the Final 4 and state title games, which will be held at the Coors Events Center.
