Robbins replaces Blair Hubbard, who left to take the job at Broomfield this offseason. Hubbard was 16-5 in two seasons at the Parker-area school.
Robbins comes to Lutheran from Lutheran South Academy in Houston, Texas, where he was head coach for the past five seasons. Playing in Division II of a private school association, Robbins led the Pioneers to 33-22 record in his time there. That includes going 10-2 in 2015, and a 27-8 mark since 2013.
“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to join the LuHi family, and I am looking forward to the partnership with the community in Parker,” Robbins said in a statement released by the school. “It is clear that Lutheran High is an outstanding school and committed to excellence in all areas of student life, and I hope to help push the football program to the next level while continuing the focus on building Christian men of character.
“I believe the administration is committed to the students and the program and I feel blessed to be able to lead LuHi into this new era.”
Robbins should already be familiar with Lutheran’s program: His Lutheran South Academy team hosted Lutheran to open the 2014 season. Lutheran won, 56-55, in overtime.
Prior to coaching at Lutheran South, Robbins also has coaching experience at Dallas Lutheran, Tolleson Union High School (Ariz.), and Concordia University Nebraska.
His wife, Rachelle, will join Lutheran as an English teacher. She also taught and coached cross country at Lutheran South.
Last season, Lutheran went 6-4 under Hubbard while playing in Class 3A. The Lions are due to return experience at quarterback in Will Willis, as well as their top two receivers, and their top seven tacklers on defense.
The program has had a lot of recent success, including winning seasons every year since 2010, but is looking to take the next step. The Lions reached the 1A quarterfinals in 2011, and went unbeaten during the 2014 regular season under Hubbard, but were upset in the first round of the 3A playoffs.
