  • Granada, Eads earn top seeds in 1A state baseball bracket

The Granada Bobcats fell one game short of a Class 1A state baseball championship last year. This year, they come in as the No. 1 overall seed in the regional/state bracket — which was released Monday — and they get an early chance to knock out the team that toppled them in the 2015 championship game.

Granada drew Dove Creek in the first round of the tournament, which is a rematch of last year’s title game. Dove Creek drew the No. 8 seed.

The Bobcats come into the tournament with a 5-0 record against teams that also qualified. They beat Holly (No. 3) and Manzanola (No. 5) twice each and also beat Eads (No. 2) early in the season.

Eads was riding a three-game winning streak heading into 1A districts, but fell to Holly on May 6. They had just come of a regular win over the Wildcats prior to the loss.

The Wildcats won a total of two district games before falling to Granada.

Fleming lands at a dangerous No. 4 seed. The Wildcats have rattled off eight-straight wins and have not dropped a game in nearly a month.

In order to get to the semifinals for the second-straight year, No. 6 Nucla will have to get through Holly. In the regular season, the Mustangs only faced one team that qualified for this year’s tournament. They faced Dove Creek four times and went 3-1 in those games.

Cornerstone Christian Academy comes in at No. 7 and will face Eads in the first round. The Bulldogs went 9-6 on the year and did not play any teams that advanced to the 1A state tournament.

Eads, Manzanola and Cornerstone Christian are the three teams who did not play in last year’s state tournament.

Colorado Academy is already in a good position to defend its 2015 girls state lacrosse championship. The Mustangs come into the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed on the bracket, which was released on Monday.

First round games of the tournament are set to be completed by Wednesday.

Mullen, Cherry Creek and Kent Denver round out the top four seeded teams in this year’s tournament. Denver East, which along with Colorado Academy and Cherry Creek advanced to last year’s Final 4, comes in as the No. 5-seeded team.

Plenty of fresh faces were able to play their way into this year’s tournament.

Battle Mountain and Dakota Ridge come in as the No. 16 and 17 teams, respectively, and will play one another in the first round.

Cheyenne Mountain gets its girls team in to match the boys as the Indians land as the No. 13 seed and will take on Valor Christian.

Aspen (No. 15) and Pine Creek (No. 18) are also new qualifiers this year and like Battle Mountain and Dakota Ridge, they will face off in the first round this week.

The teams that were seen as the top dogs at the end of the boys lacrosse regular season will hold on to their distinctions in the 2016 state tournament.

Regis Jesuit earned the No. 1 overall seed in the Class 5A boys lacrosse bracket that was released Monday morning. Dawson assumes the top spot in the 4A bracket.

Defending 5A champion Cherry Creek lands at No. 4 with Mountain Vista and Arapahoe taking the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.

The Bruins, Raiders and Golden Eagles all advanced to last year’s Final 4. Kent Denver, the other Final 4 team from 2015, lands at No. 14 this year.

This year’s bracket sees three fresh faces as Palmer (No. 10), Chaparral (No. 13) and Legend (No. 16) all made it into this year’s tournament after failing to qualify last year.

First round games for the 2016 5A state lacrosse tournament will be played on Wednesday.

After starting this season 0-3 Valor Christian won 11 of their final 12 games to play up to the No. 2 seed. Following the Eagles are Conifer at No. 3, Windsor and No. 4 and Cheyenne Mountain at No. 5.

Defending champion Aspen lands at No. 11 and will face No. 6 Air Academy for its first round game.

Dawson School, Valor Christian and Cheyenne Mountain all joined Aspen in last year’s semifinals and with the layout of the bracket, it’s possible for all those teams to return to that point.

Like in 5A, there are three teams in this year’s bracket that did not qualify in 2015. Golden lands at No. 7, St. Mary’s is No. 8 and Vail Mountain is the No. 14 team.

First round games for the 4A tournament will be played on Tuesday.

Fossil Ridge has hired Zak Bigelow as its football coach, Poudre School District athletic director Ron Alexander announced on Monday afternoon.

Bigelow, a 2006 graduate of Dakota Ridge, has spent all of his coaching career to this point in college football, most recently as an assistant director of football operations at Oregon State for the past two seasons. He was also the director of football operations at Northern Colorado (2013-14), a graduate assistant at Tulsa (2011-12), and offensive quality coach at Northern Colorado (2010).

Bigelow played football at Northern Colorado as a kicker from 2006-09. He received a master’s degree from Tulsa in business administration in 2013.

“Zak was chosen from an outstanding pool of candidates that applied for this position,” Alexander said in a press release. “The combination of Zak’s character, passion, leadership and wealth of football experience led the hiring committee and myself to choose Zak as the next leader of the Sabercat football program. As impressive as Zak is on the field, he is even more impressive as a leader of young people. We are pleased to have Zak as a part of the PSD family.”

Said Bigelow in a statement: “My wife and I are Colorado kids and we are excited to be coming back home. We met at the University of Northern Colorado, as student-athletes, and can’t express to you how passionate we are about Poudre School District and the Fort Collins community. After ten years in college football, I feel very blessed to be coming home to a job that I am proud to call a dream job.”

Bigelow replaces Brian Tinker, who was let go this offseason. Tinker’s teams were 10-10 in two seasons.

Fossil Ridge, a Class 5A program which went 5-5 last season, returns a considerable amount of talent next season.

  • Milk grant applications due June 4

milkAre you familiar with the benefits of drinking milk after exercise? Looking to share these benefits with your team for a season?

The dairy farm families of Western Dairy Association are offering Fuel Up with Milk Grants in conjunction with the Colorado High School Activities Association for Colorado’s fall 2016 sports season.

Recipients of the grant will receive funding to purchase milk (both white and chocolate) for your team to replenish after practices and games. For more information and grant specifics, visit this page.

DID YOU KNOW THAT MILK is NATURE’S SPORTS DRINK?

Milk, both white and chocolate, provides key nutrients needed after exercise. Milk is 90% water and a great tasting choice after practice and games. Milk’s fluids and electrolytes, including calcium, potassium and magnesium, rehydrate the body and replenish what is lost in sweat. Carbohydrates in milk refuel muscles and replenish glycogen (energy) stores. High-quality protein aids in muscle recovery and repair. Calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus build & maintain strong bones. Milk provides potassium to help ward off muscle cramping. B vitamins in milk help convert food to energy.

Athletes can train harder and perform better with proper nutrition! Would you like to see your athletes excel both on and off the field by replenishing their bodies with chocolate milk? Your team could win funds to provide FREE milk for a season. If your student athletes aren’t fueling up with low-fat white or chocolate milk, this is a great opportunity to get started!

For more information on the Fuel up with Milk Grant visit Western Dairy Association’s sports nutrition webpage.
