    The 2016 all-state girls soccer teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

  • Vista Ridge’s Hunter Maldonado commits to Wyoming basketball

    Hunter Maldonado, who recently finished his junior year at Vista Ridge, committed to play basketball at Wyoming on Monday night.

    The 2017 grad announced his decision on Twitter:

    Maldonado, a 6-foot-6 forward, led Vista Ridge in scoring as a junior with 22.6 points per game — which ranked fourth in all of Class 4A — and also topped the team with 6.9 rebounds per game. He had three double-doubles, two of which came as the Wolves made a run to the 4A Final 4.

    Maldonado scored 29 points and had 11 rebounds in an upset of No. 1 seed Lewis-Palmer in the Great 8, then dropped 37 points (to go along with 12 rebounds) in a Final 4 loss to eventual champion Pueblo West.

    After the season, he was named first-team all-state in 4A.

    “Hunter is a great kid that is going to have an immediate impact on the Wyoming program,” Vista Ridge athletic director Sam Baldwin told CHSAANow.com via text message. “You couldn’t ask for a better teammate or student-athlete. Wyoming got a gem of a young man.”

    As a sophomore, Maldonado averaged 18.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

    Maldonado is the first boys basketball player in Colorado’s 2017 class to announce his college decision. He continues a recent trend of Colorado players heading to Wyoming’s basketball program.

    The Cowboys will have four players from Colorado on their 2017-16 team, which includes 2016 ThunderRidge grad Austin Mueller.

  • Think about your drink

    We all tend to focus on what food we put into our bodies, but do you really look at what you drink? Being healthy is not only eating nutritious meals, but also consuming beverages that are healthy and nutritious. Before choosing a beverage, remember these easy tips:

    • Choose from a variety of healthy drink options such as: water, low fat or fat-free milk, 100% fruit juice, or unsweetened tea or coffee over sugar-sweetened beverages.
    • Drink water or milk instead of sugar-sweetened beverages (e.g. sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, and fruit drinks).
    • Use the Nutrition Facts label to choose foods with less total sugars. Aim for added sugars at 10% or less of total daily calories (DGA 2015).
    • Use the Ingredient List to choose foods with little or no added sugars.

    Remember not all drinks are created equal (see infographic). The Dietary Guidelines also suggest choosing nutrient-dense beverages that contain vitamins and minerals such as calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C (as well as other nutrients). Examples of nutrient-dense beverages include non-fat and low-fat milk, and 100% fruit and vegetable juices.

    Milk is an especially nutrient-rich choice, since it contains 9 essential vitamins and nutrients. These nutrients are: Calcium, Protein, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Niacin, Vitamin B12, Phosporus, Potassium and Ribflavin.  It is also an excellent choice after a workout because it has the ideal balance of carbohydrates to protein for muscle repair and recovery.

  • Championship Count: Valor Christian tops in team titles; Cheyenne Mountain has most individual wins

    AURORA — Valor Christian’s athletic department had a banner season in 2015-16, leading the state with seven team championships.

    In terms of individual sports, Cheyenne Mountain led the way with 11 individual champions.

    Team Championships

    Valor Christian had the most team championships this season with seven. The Eagles won boys golf, softball, football, girls basketball, girls swimming, boys lacrosse and baseball.

    The seven titles are the most since Regis Jesuit and Cheyenne Mountain each won seven in 2010-11.

    Five teams tied for second place in the state with three team championships this season: Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Academy, Kent Denver, Pomona and Regis Jesuit.

    Colorado Academy and Valor Christian each had a state-best three girls championships, while Valor’s four titles were the most on the boys’ side.

    In all, 67 different teams won a team championship in 2015-16, including 16 teams which won multiple championships.

    Individual Championships

    Cheyenne Mountain also had an outstanding year in terms of individual titles, leading the state with 11 championships. The program was well balanced: Six championships came from its girls teams, and five came from the boys.

    Lutheran’s 10 individual championships were the second-most in the state, including a state-best nine boys titles. Regis Jesuit was third with nine individual titles, and Air Academy and Pomona tied for fourth with eight apiece.

    A total of 135 schools had at least one individual champion, and 82 had multiple champions. Of those, 21 schools had at least five individual champions.

    The 2016 all-state girls lacrosse teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

  • Boulder tabs Vincent Smith as new football coach

    Boulder moved quickly to fill its open football coach position, hiring veteran coach Vincent Smith on Saturday.

    Smith has been coaching football in some capacity since 1996, and spent the past two seasons heading Gardena High School in Los Angeles. He will replace Bob Simmons, who resigned in May.

    “We’re very excited to hire a coach like Vincent Smith to lead our program,” Boulder athletic director Eddie Hartnett said in announcing the hire on Saturday. “He has a tremendous amount of experience over two decades, and we’re looking forward to what he can do with Panther football.”

    Smith is set to meet his new team and their parents at Recht Field on June 13.

    Smith is familiar with the Boulder area already. He played high school football in Los Angeles prior to accepting a scholarship to play at the University of Colorado. He spent his freshman season there before transferring to Arizona, where he became a three-year starter on the offensive line.

    “I have fond memories of Boulder. It’s a wonderful city with beautiful people,” Smith said in a statement. “I have many great friends in Colorado, lifelong friends. I’m so very excited to be part of the Boulder High School family!”

    In an email to the Boulder community, Hartnett called Smith’s hire “a new era” for the Panthers, and wrote, “I believe that we have found  a coach that not only will be a wonderful fit for Boulder High School football, but Boulder High School will be a wonderful fit for this coach.”

    Smith was an assistant at Los Angeles-area high schools from 1996-2002, including a two-year stint at his alma mater, Locke, from 2000-02. He then became a head coach for the first time in 2003 at Desert Ridge, a school in Arizona which had just opened yet competed at the Class 4A level.

    After three seasons there, Smith moved in 2006 to Tucson High, whose campus shares an intersection with the University of Arizona. Smith coached that team for four seasons, and turned the program around from consecutive 0-10 seasons, and a 25-game losing streak, to a state playoff appearance — a first for the program in 20 seasons.

    Smith also coached a women’s professional team in Tucson during that time.

    From there, Smith became an assistant at Mesa High, also in Arizona, and Cabrillo, in Long Beach, Calif.

    He was then hired as the head coach at Gardena, where he went 2-8 and 6-6 in the past two seasons. Last season was just the second time in 11 seasons that the program had won at least six games, and the team reached the playoffs.

    In 10 seasons as a head coach, Smith has a career record of 23-81. But, he has a history of taking over struggling or new programs and pointing them toward success they haven’t had in a long time.

    He’ll have a similar challenge in his new job at Boulder, which has won more than three games just three times since 2004. But the Panthers are coming off their best season in that time frame — a 5-4 regular season which ended in a playoff appearance — and they return talent at a number of key positions.

  • Voting for spring all-state teams is underway

    The ballots to select the 2015-16 girls lacrosse, boys lacrosse, girls soccer and baseball all-state have been emailed to coaches.

    They now have a week to select the teams, which are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    The all-state teams for so-called individual sports — in the spring, those are girls tennis, boys swim, track, and girls golf — are selected based upon performance at the state meets. A number of those teams have been released, and will continue to be this week.

    The process for selecting the all-state teams in so-called team sports is as follows:

    • Every player who was a first-team all-league selection is put on a ballot.
    • Head coaches are emailed the ballot, and they vote on their all-state picks. Only head coaches are permitted to vote, and each head coach only gets one vote.
    • The players with the most votes will be placed on the all-state teams.
    • There are separate voting categories for coaches to vote on player of the year, and coach of the year, in each classification.

    Head coaches who didn’t receive the all-state basketball ballot in their email should email rcasey@chsaa.org as soon as possible.

  • Fossil Ridge’s Haley Donaldson named Gatorade softball player of the year

    Fossil Ridge senior Haley Donaldson was named the softball player of the year in Colorado by Gatorade on Thursday.

    The first softball honoree from Fossil Ridge, Donaldson helped the Sabercats reach the Class 5A semifinals in the fall. She hit .662 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs.

    After the season, she was a first-team all-state pick. Off the field, Donaldson carried a 3.89 GPA, and also volunteered at a children’s hospital, and coached youth teams.

    She is signed to play softball at Nebraska next season.

    “Donaldson is a great all-around player and an extremely tough out at the plate,” Legacy coach Dawn Gaffin said in a statement. “She makes some exceptional plays at shortstop too, the kind you don’t often see from a high school athlete.”

    Donaldson now becomes a finalist for the national softball player of the year award.
