HIGHLANDS RANCH — Valor Christian head coach Rod Sherman had a very simple message to his team after its 49-21 loss to Saguaro (Ariz.) Saturday afternoon.
“Guys,” he said. “We’re going to be alright.”
And he believed it.
Looking at a sea of disappointed football players, he explained that the loss, while never ideal, will only serve as a tool the Eagles (0-1 overall) can use to get better.
And they believed it.
“It’s a journey,” Sherman said. “We say it from day one, we have to stay the course. We have a plan and a culture for our program and we have to let the culture win the day.”
But Saturday was a tough day to win. The Sabercats (2-0) looked ready for the high-profile nature that came with the game. In front of a nationally televised ESPN audience, quarterback Max Massingale and running back Stone Matthews ruled the day.
Watson began the first half scoring rush for Saguaro by punching in a seven-yard touchdown, giving his team a quick 7-0 edge.
The Eagles took the field with all eyes on Michigan commit, Dylan McCaffrey. The only issue is that with Blake Stenstrom and Luke McCaffrey, Valor Christian currently rosters three outstanding athletes at the position and they all had something to offer on the initial drive.

The highlight was a reverse pass from Stenstrom to McCaffrey for an Eagle touchdown, tying the game.
“It’s just a reverse pass that we have,” Stenstrom said. “Sorry, I can’t give you the name of it, but it’s just something where we motion a guy, he tosses it to me and I throw it to Dylan.”
But with limited tricks up their sleeve, the Eagles stalled offensively while the Sabercats did anything but.
Massingale ran for two touchdowns and tossed two more before halftime, putting Saguaro up 35-14 at the half. He accounted for over 100 yards through the air and another 100 on the ground. It seemed as if he just couldn’t be pulled down by the Eagles.
“It was an embarrassment how we tackled today,” Sherman said. “We have to get better at that. It was a poor performance for our program.”
The defense came out with more energy in the second and in its first two series, did something they couldn’t do once in the first half. They made Saguaro punt.
McCaffrey was able to capitalize and find Noah Kuzma for a 10-yard touchdown pass. But McCaffrey, who finished the day 18-25 with 205 yards and a touchdown, still wasn’t happy with what the offense was doing on the field.
“I thought we played a pretty good first half (offensively),” he said. “I think in the second half the tables turned a little bit. The offense could’ve stepped it up some.”
And they nearly had a chance put some pressure on the Sabercats. On 2nd and 13 and momentum with Valor’s defense, a Massingale pass went out of bounds. But the Eagles were flagged for roughing the passer.
Saguaro proceeded to march 78 yards down the field for another touchdown, effectively ending Valor’s comeback hopes.
“They let us off the hook on the roughing the passer call,” Saguaro coach Jason Mohns said. “That was really the swinging point of the momentum.”
Opening the season with a loss is not exactly a banner way to begin a state title defense, but Sherman has all the confidence in his players to rebound.
And they’ll need to as they travel to Mullen Friday night. The Mustangs are coming off a last-minute loss to Pomona.
“Saguaro made us a lot better today,” Sherman said. “There were teams early on last year that made us play better in November and December and we want to play our best football at the end of the year.”
And if that’s what ends up happening, Sherman will be right when he tells his team that they’re going to be alright.
DENVER — Elicia Espinosa went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run as No. 1 Valor Christian softball beat No. 5 Frederick 7-0 in a Class 4A game on Saturday.
Lauren Foster added three RBIs for the Eagles, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
Ali Kilponen, the reigning 4A player of the year, allowed just one hit in the circle for Valor. She struck out 16, and walked one.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Even when Rob Royer was playing football at Rampart in the late 1980s and early 90s, the rivalry with Liberty stood out. Now that he looms as head coach of the Rams, it remains competitive and he and his players will get a dose of it as early as possible.
That’s where Zero Week can make things fun.
The ending of last year’s showdown, if anything, fueled the fire between the two teams and it seems as if they couldn’t wait to take the field against each other.
All summer long, football players at both schools have practiced through the heat, preparing for the chance to either set things right or prove that the result was anything but a fluke.
And given the opponent, it makes the start of the season fun for both sides.
“It’s exciting, we’ve all been waiting all summer to get things going,” Rampart senior receiver Joey Williams said. “We’re just ready to be there, especially with a team like Liberty, who beat us last year.”
In one of the wildest endings in the state season, the Rams scored a go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes left to take a one-point lead. With a long way to go, the Lancers were able to capitalize on every opportunity they got, which included a pass interference call that helped moved them down the field.

Hunter Wierenga was able to connect on a field goal for the 34-32 win, leaving Liberty elated and Rampart stunned.
But now that the 2015 is in the history books, Royer is excited about his getting his players back on the field where they’ll get another shot at the Lancers. All the better that it comes on the very first week that teams are able to compete in regular season contests.
“We had our camp at the end of the summer and (Zero Week) allows us to have a bye week in week five to get ready for league,” Royer said. “The fact that it’s Liberty adds another little bonus in it.”
Just up the road from Rampart, Lancers coach Marc Sites is also getting his squad prepared for Saturday night’s showdown.
But for Sites, Zero Week adds a challenge for him that he didn’t face last year. The Lancers didn’t play until week one, when they beat Cheyenne Mountain 27-0. This year, he’s feeling the pressure of a week taken away from game prep.
“There are lot of unknowns, a lot of variables that are out there,” Sites said. “Trying to squeeze what you would normally do in three weeks into two weeks has been a challenge.”
But when game time rolls around, the Lancers will be ready to play. And with two schools so close in proximity facing off, it could easily have the feel of an organized game between neighborhood kids.
“Besides Air Academy, Liberty and Rampart are the two oldest high schools in District 20,” Sites said. “The kids all know each other, they live next to each other in the neighborhoods so it makes for an exciting way to start the season.”
Rampart and Liberty will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday at District 20 Stadium.

GRAND JUNCTION — All week — shoot, all summer — Montrose heard about how bad it was going to be this season, about how the loss of last year’s seniors would decimate the team.
On Thursday, as the Indians opened Colorado’s high school football season in Zero Week with a matchup against nearby Fruita Monument, they set out to prove everyone wrong.
Only, they went three-and-out on their first drive. And then Fruita Monument promptly marched down the field and took a 7-0 lead.
“Here’s this inexperienced team,” Montrose coach Jim Scarry would say later, “what’s going to happen? How are you going to respond to adversity?”
Well, Montrose went down and scored. 7-7.
“And all of a sudden,” Scarry said, the thought on the sideline became, “OK, we’re going to get this done.”
Added quarterback Caleb Egbert: “We weren’t just going to fall over and die and just let them run over us.”
Montrose beat Fruita Monument 33-27 on Thursday night at Stocker Stadium, the second consecutive win over the Wildcats and coach Todd Casbier, who coached Montrose for 10 seasons before joining Fruita Monument in 2015.
As usual, Montrose got it done on the ground. Egbert, a junior, had three rushing scores, and running back Riley Freeland went wild — rushing for 277 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.

“Riley got quite a bit of experience last year, but had never been the guy,” Scarry said. “Now he is the guy, and he stepped up and played like the guy.”
After tying the game at 7 with that big response of a drive late in the first quarter, Montrose then went up 13-7 early in the second when Freeland broke free for an 80-yard score.
Fruita answered with a touchdown pass from sophomore Zach Rush to Danial Van Hoose, but Montrose’s Mason Weig took the ensuring kickoff 95 yards for a score and a 20-14 lead midway through the second quarter.
“I saw a seam and I took it,” Weig said, “and didn’t look back.”
Things stayed that way until late in the third, when Montrose put together a long drive and capped it with a one-yard touchdown from Egbert.
Fruita responded with a one-yard score from Logan Triplett, his second of the night. But Montrose — again — had a clock-draining drive that ended with a short touchdown from Egbert with 5:26 remaining in the game.
And still, Fruita came back at Montrose. The Wildcats got another touchdown pass from Rush, this to Kyle Fineran, who made a leaping grab in the end zone. It was 33-27, and 3:30 remained.
Fruita then stopped Montrose on fourth-and-4 at the 37-yard-line, and took over with 42 seconds to play.
The Wildcats drove down and had a pass into the end zone on the game’s final play, but it fell incomplete.
“We won the last play,” Scarry said. “Thank goodness.”
It sent off a crazy celebration on the Montrose sideline, an atypical scene for a Zero Week win.
“I think we were all pretty angry that people were doubting us,” Egbert said. “We didn’t want to be the people that are considered underdogs and not going to win anything. We wanted to prove everybody wrong.”
Said Weig, a junior: “We had heard a lot — even from the community — just thinking that they were going to get a running clock. We took it to heart.”
Scarry gathered his players after the game, and addressed that doubt head on.
“They have heard it,” he said afterward. “I mean, I’ve heard it: ‘Oh, it’s going to be a down year. You lost a lot of seniors.’ Hey, you know, I’ve seen them practice, but until you see it in the game, that’s a whole different story. They responded in the correct way.”
