  • Cherry Creek athletes amped up for 2016 season

    Denver East Cherry Creek softball
    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

It’s kickoff week for most Cherry Creek sports teams, a new year means new opportunities for state titles and Cherry Creek has some teams with some chances to do just that.

Some teams are looking at coaching changes, and with those changes comes excitement to start something from scratch

One Cherry Creek program turning a new page is the softball program. After a coaching change that seems to be common for the program, this year something different appears to be happening.

“(We) have really been working on playing as a team rather than individuals,” junior second baseman Aubrea Leikam said. “All of the girls on the team are very excited for the season. We are going to compete well this year.”

On the other hand there are teams that have established their success. Volleyball coach Sally Moos is going to begin her 43rd year and expectations are high.

“I’m really excited to work with this team,” senior middle blocker Tate Eppard said. “I’ve played with this team for a while now and I know we’re all ready to work hard and dedicate ourselves to this season in order to make it the best one yet.”

Bruins football is going for it all after losing to Valor in last years frigid semifinal game at Stutler Bowl.

The Bruins non-league schedule is packed with tough team and its the defense will be a headline for the 2016 team.

“I’m excited for the first game, we have been lifting and running since June 1,” senior cornerback Jacob Hallam said. “It’s my senior year and I just want to show what I can do on the football field. More importantly, I want to win as a team.”

The No. 4-ranked Bruins will get started with a CHSAANow.com top-10 showdown with No. 8 Regis Jesuit. Last year it was Cherry Creek who won the week one showdown with the Raiders, coming away with a 17-3 win.

It may just be one week of competition, but every program in the athletic department is hoping to jump out to a strong start and set the tone for another strong season of Cherry Creek athletics.
