  • Discovery Canyon’s Luke Trujillo wins playoff to capture 4A boys state golf title

CARBONDALE — For the first time in school history, the Discovery Canyon Thunder have a team it can call champion.

The Thunder shot 438 through the tournament to claim the Class 4A boys state golf championship. But while the team title had little drama behind it, the battle for the individual title will be talked about for years.

Discovery Canyon’s Luke Trujillo shot a 1-over par 73 to end the tournament at 4-under. But he had to fight off first Windsor’s Cole Krantz and then last year’s defending champion.

On the 18th tee box, Trujillo heard the roar of the crowd from the 18th green. He grew worried.

He thought Silver Creek’s Jackson Solem had just made birdie to pull even with at 5-under.

“I told him it was the other guy,” Thunder coach Mark Liggett said.

But Liggett had no idea that the other guy was Trujillo’s teammate, Owen Pasvogel, who had just chipped in from the bunker.

In reality, Liggett had no idea who it was.

But it wouldn’t matter. Trujillo’s approach shot on 18 went left of the green and his chip putt him above the pin about five feet out.

He missed the par putt and Solem and Trujillo were headed for a playoff.

“I was thinking that if I wanted to win, I had to finish,” Trujillo said.

He couldn’t in regulation so the co-leaders went to the ninth hole to determine an undisputed champion. Both found the green in regulation and two-putted for par.

They were forced back to the ninth tee where Trujillo stuck it to about 12 feet for birdie while Solem sat on the fringe.

Both missed their attempts at birdie and while Trujillo tapped in for par, Solem was left with five feet of green in front of the cup.

“I was expecting him to make it with the mindset that we were going to another playoff hole,” Trujillo said.

But Solem’s putt pushed just a tad left and didn’t fall. A new champion had been crowned.

Trujillo went 5-under Monday while playing in Solem’s group and was forced to go toe-to-toe with him in the playoff for the top spot in the tournament.

So to come away with the win, Trujillo firmly accepted that in order to be the man, you have to beat the man.

“I don’t even know if it’s hit me yet,” Trujillo said. “It’s amazing.”

And he wasn’t alone in celebration.

After gaining a 13-stroke lead on Monday, the Thunder held on to claim the overall team title. It is the first team championship in school history.

“It’s awesome,” Pasvogel said. “(To) think about that in 20 years and know I was on that team, it’s been a fun ride.”

The Thunder had played well throughout the season. With wins in the Spartan Invite and the Cheyenne Mountain Invite, a state championship quickly became the goal.

“I saw the the talent that they could get here and do it,” Liggett said. “And boy, they did. All year, that’s all they said, ‘we want state.’”

    And they got it.

The Thunder may have sat through a 45-minute frost delay and two playoff holes, but they have the hardware that will be the drive home on they’ll never forget.

  • Oliver Jack wins 3A boys golf in playoff, helps Kent Denver win record ninth championship

AURORA — Oliver Jack was a little upset that he left a potential state-championship-winning putt short on the 18th green.

So he went out on the first playoff hole at the Class 3A boys golf state tournament and absolutely crushed his drive down the middle of the fairway. That laid the groundwork for a birdie on the par-5 Hole 1, and helped Jack capture the individual title over Estes Park’s Ivan Richmond on Tuesday at Saddle Rock Golf Course.

“I didn’t want to make that same mistake again,” Jack said after his round. “I guess that first tee shot, I was a little angry, so I hit it a little hard.”

Jack led the tournament after the first round, and held that lead the entire second day — until Richmond tied him at 1-under with a birdie on the 17th hole. It was a familiar sight: the duo had tied for second at last year’s 3A boys golf tournament.

Both players then bogeyed the 18th, though Jack had a shot to win the tournament with the putt for par which he left short. So, tied at even par after 36 holes, Jack and Richmond headed to the first hole to begin a playoff.

“He was a little down after three-putting,” said Kent Denver coach Bob Austin, “and I said, ‘Oliver, let’s get your scorecard right and we’re going to walk to the first tee, and if you bust your drive out there, if you make four, you’re going to win. It’s all ahead of you.’”

Jack’s huge tee shot set himself up with a close approach shot, and then he two-putted for the birdie. Richmond hit his tee shot in the hazard to the left of the fairway, and wasn’t able to recover. He double-bogeyed the playoff hole.

Jack had birdied the first hole twice before in the tournament.

“I’ve played that hole well all week, it’s been a good hole for me,” said Jack, a junior who is already committed to play golf at the University of Colorado. “I was kind of playing match play against him, because he hit it in the hazard, unfortunately. I was just trying to chip it kind of close.”

Jack did chip it close, then sealed his win with a third birdie on Hole 1.

“I believed all along that he was the best player here,” Austin said. “He’s a very, very elite talent, he’s a special kid.”

Jack’s individual title also helped Kent Denver reclaim the team championship, their first since 2012. It is also the program’s ninth overall championship, which edges the Sun Devils past Cherry Creek and its eight titles for the most in state history.

“That says a lot about coach Austin, who kind of pours his heart and soul into this team,” Jack said. “It was good to get the win for him.”

The record carries a bit of personal significance for Austin. The longtime coach, who has led Kent Denver to eight of the titles, played his high school golf at Cherry Creek — and he helped the Bruins win two championships.

Austin got emotional when he spoke about moving past the Bruins and the legendary Joe Lynch, his former coach.

“I don’t believe I’m in his league as a coach,” Austin said. “I never dreamed of this happening. For the school to have won nine and move ahead of my former school … that meant a lot to me to do that. I just feel blessed. We’re very fortunate and we have great players who answered the bell.”

The Sun Devils, who finished runner-up the past two seasons, had a very consistent group to finish 13-over as a team, including Jackson Klutznick (who finished 4-over) and Ben Zimmerman (9-over). Jack Friedman also had a good tournament, shooting 18-over.

Peak to Peak, the defending champion, finished second at 16-over. The Pumas got scoring rounds from Ethan Tartaglia (+2), Ian Thorpe (+7), and Nishant Datta (+7). Sam Taylor, the defending individual champion, finished at +26.

Dawson (+39) finished third as a team, Eaton (+43) was fourth, and Aspen (+46) finished fifth.

Individually, Estes Park’s Richmond had an unbelievable round, and was the only one under par on Tuesday at 1-under.

Peak to Peak’s Tartaglia was third individually, and Kent’s Klutznick and Dawson’s Yale Kim finished in a tie for fourth at 4-over.

DENVER — Eight was enough for D’Evelyn’s softball team Tuesday afternoon against rival Evergreen.

The Jaguars (10-5 overall, 2-1 in Class 4A Jeffco) scored eight runs on seven hits while sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. The big opening inning was all D’Evelyn needed offensively in an eventual 10-3 home victory over the Cougars (9-5, 1-2).

“It was really nice how they attacked right away,” D’Evelyn coach Dan Porreco said of the 8-run first. “Then we kind of cooled down, popped things up and was getting into easy outs. We’ve been trying to have complete games where we keep scoring.”

D’Evelyn led off the game with four straight hits. Bailey Marvel, Angi Reed, Peyton Balbin and Sarah Dirks got the Jaguars rolling. Balbin went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples, a home run and four RBIs. She has proved how valuable young talent can be.

Balbin tripled in the fourth and finished off the Jaguars’ scoring with a 2-run home run on a line-drive to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 10-3.

“My expectations were just to help the team out,” D’Evelyn’s starting freshman catcher said. “This team is fun and I respect them. I wanted to get hits for them when they need it. I’m just pushing more.”

Marvel provided a nice push also going 3-for-4 from the plate, which included a 3-run triple in her second at-bat in the bottom of the first inning.

“We came out with a lot of hits. We drove in a lot of runs,” Marvel said. “We always come out strong and then seem to flatten out.”

After belting seven hits in the first inning, D’Evelyn took its foot off the accelerator. The Jaguars only had five hits off Evergreen senior pitcher Katie Solis for the remainder of the game. The only runs for D’Evelyn after the first inning came on Baldin’s 2-run inside-the-park home run.

“She (Balbin) crushed it,” Porreco said. “She doesn’t act like a freshman. She is aggressive and handles herself.”

Evergreen did get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. The Cougars took advantage of three walks by D’Evelyn pitcher Jamie Lefevre in the inning. Solis picked up an RBI on a groundout to first base.

Evergreen senior Jessica Bellatti had two singles to lead the Cougars’ offense that had three hits in the game. Evergreen scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Bellatti was caught stealing in the top of the seventh for the final out of the game.

With only two automatic bids awarded to 4A Jeffco, it may very well be the case that D’Evelyn and Evergreen postseason dreams will be realized or crushed by RPI points. Half of the postseason field will be made up of at-large bids to make the 32-team regional playoff field.

“We’ve just got to win,” Porreco said of the playoff hopes. “I feel good so far. We want to go to the playoffs and prove something.”

Going into Tuesday’s game, D’Evelyn was 23rd in the RPI standings and Evergreen sat near the bubble at 30th.

D’Evelyn closes its conference schedule with the two top dogs — Valor Christian (15-0, 4-0) and Wheat Ridge (11-5, 2-1). The Jaguars faced two-time defending 4A state champion and No. 1 ranked Valor at 10 a.m. Saturday in Highlands Ranch. D’Evelyn wraps up league play at No. 4 Wheat Ridge at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 5.

“Valor is our main one. Hopefully we’ll come out and hit Ali (Valor junior pitcher Ali Kilponen). She has been having a great season,” Marvel said. “If we can beat Valor, I think we can carry that momentum over to beat Wheat Ridge.”

Victories over Valor and Wheat Ridge would put D’Evelyn in the driver’s seat for a conference title. Evergreen gets its shot against Wheat Ridge on the Cougars’ home field at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
