  • Highlands Ranch’s Kyle Pearson knocks down hole-in-one en route to individual 5A boys golf title

GRAND JUNCTION — Kyle Pearson knew it could be done. Really — he saw his own teammate score a hole-in-one a few days earlier on the same exact golf course.

And not only did Pearson know he could possibly grab a hole-in-one at the Class 5A boys golf state tournament, he also knew he was going to win the individual championship on Tuesday at Bookcliff Country Club. After Monday’s first round, Pearson tweeted that he was “gonna bring home the W tomorrow!”

After finishing round one on Monday tied for second with Eaglecrest’s Davis Bryant at five-under-par 66, the senior came back stronger than ever on the second day and played absolutely out of his mind.

The fast greens that were messing with everyone’s putts? No problem.

“I like fast greens so I was fine with the speed,” Pearson said. “I’d rather putt with super-fast greens than super-slow. The greens were rolling pretty good.”

Wide open course? Perfect. And even though it was a little windy, no gust could stop the impressive hole-in-one.

Falcons teammate Jackson Crist scored a hole-in-one using a gap wedge during a practice round on Saturday, and Pearson took notes for when it was his turn to play hole No. 15, a 136-yard par 3.

“We both hit with the exact same club and spun the ball in,” Pearson said. “As soon as it started rolling back, I thought I might have had a chance after seeing his the other day.”

It was the second hole-in-one Pearson scored in his life.

“Just when you think you’ve seen it all in golf, something else incredible happens,” longtime Falcons golf coach James Barker said.

Pearson and Bryant trailed leader Nick Caldwell of Rock Canyon by one stroke after the first round and teed off with him in the second. It was very close in the front nine holes, but Pearson began pulling away as the clear leader in the back nine.

He finished the second round 4-under and won the tournament 9-under. Davis was 2-over on the second round, 3-under overall; Caldwell 4-over on the round, 2-under in the tournament.

There was also a two-way tie for fourth place, 3-way tie for sixth and 3-way tie for ninth.

Even though Pearson was the obvious individual champion a few holes before the last, the team title was still a decision that came down to the very last putt. If Pearson birdied hole 18, the Falcons would dethrone the reigning team champion Regis Jesuit. If he parred, the teams would be tied and have to go to a playoff.

But Pearson hit one of his shots a little too far right and it veered off the fairway. He ended up getting a bogey, and the Raiders defended their 5A team title and won the by one stroke.

“I thought I had good yardage, and didn’t think it was that hard of a shot, I just shot the ball in a foot of grass and we barely found it,” Pearson said. “After that I was just trying to make par.”

Pearson is the second individual Falcon to win the boys golf championship, the other champion being coach Barker’s son, Caleb, in 2009. Highlands Ranch finished as the team state runner-up for the sixth time.

“We started the day about six shots back, then got close to the lead, then fell six shots back again,” Barker said. “And then we got close to the lead again and it came down to the last hole, and we couldn’t quite finish the job, but it was a great comeback.”

Pearson had 10 birdies and 3 bogeys for the entire tournament. Ryan Pearson finished the tournament tied for 14th with Regis Jesuit’s Justin Markel at 7-over-par 149. Crist was in a four-way tie for 33rd with a 155, and Andrew Davis shot a 172 both rounds for a 3-way tie at 78th finish.

“Kyle carried us,” Barker said. “He’s a little streaky as a player, but when he gets going, and I’ve seen that quite a few times over the last four years, he can really light it up.”

And while it must have been extremely stressful for Pearson to go into the 18th hole knowing the team title depended entirely upon his stroke count, there was also stress on the grass hill behind the 18 green, when the Raiders had to hold tight before celebrating a sixth team title in the last seven years.

“Oh, yeah, we were watching,” Regis Jesuit golf coach Craig Rogers said. “We knew he was the last guy on the course and he was also the best player out here in the whole tournament. Believe me, it wasn’t easy knowing Highlands Ranch had a guy who was so talented still left out there on the course with a chance to beat us.”

Rogers said his team played very well too and was very proud of his players.

“Kind of our horse the last few years has been Tyler Zhang, and he’s been hurt. He was in a car accident and was in some pain and certainly capable of being the individual medalist out here, he’s that caliber of a player,” Rogers said.

Zhang, a senior who will play golf at Regis University next year, shot a 150 for the whole tournament and finished in a four-way tie for 16th place. He was in the front passenger seat when a friend was driving and rear-ended another car the day of golf regionals.

“In injured my back and have been icing it and taking Advil,” Zhang said. “But everyone involved is fine.”

He added: “I feel good now, I’m kind of holding this trophy right now.”

Drew Anderson and Cal McCoy shot a 2-over-par 144 overall to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place.

  • Fresh snack ideas for fall

With school in full swing, now is the perfect time to consider healthy snack options. The balance of academic and athletic demands requires the question, “is my body receiving what it needs every day to perform and feel my best?” One easy way to do this is ensuring we get the recommended three servings of dairy per day.

Dairy products, and specifically the calcium, protein and vitamin D in them, help build and maintain healthy bone mass, but that’s not all! Milks high-quality protein is great for muscle growth and repair. Combined with the other essential nutrients, milk becomes critical for the athlete’s needs. Having a nourishing, well rounded diet gives our brain and body the best chance of performing at peak ability.

Here are some fun and delicious snack ideas to help add nutrient rich foods to your everyday diet:

    • Add a container of yogurt or string cheese to your lunch box: eating a protein snack like yogurt, milk or cheese can reduce your appetite and help prevent over-eating at mealtimes.
    • Combine cheese with fresh fruit and vegetables: eating cheese and fresh fruits and vegetables can account for 4 of the 5 food groups from My Plate.
    • Include milk on cereal or replace the cereal with fresh berries.
    • Dip raw vegetables or fresh fruit in yogurt flavored with honey.
    • Make your plain yogurt more exciting with cinnamon, apples, almonds or raisins.
    • Consider chocolate milk for post-workout recovery.
    • Flavor your hot milk with cinnamon.
    • Add yogurt to granola and fresh berries.
    • For a make ahead option: combine chia seeds and ½ cup milk, refrigerate it overnight (becomes pudding consistency), the next morning add almond slices and fresh berries.. Yum!
    • Consider making a smoothie by combining milk, banana and peanut butter.
    • Combine your favorite fruit with cottage cheese and sprinkle with cinnamon.

You can make snacks fun and engage in healthy eating habits. Go ahead, try one!

  • Broncos high school football coach of the week: Mead’s Jason Klatt

    Mead football coach Jason Klatt
    (Photo provided by Jason Klatt)

Mead football coach Jason Klatt isn’t really concerned with winning games. He’s more focused on creating relationships with students, and holding his players to high expectations of how to treat females, teachers and adults.

Klatt will never give up moral ground just to win a football game, and turning out great, young men is way more important than any victory could ever be — even the biggest win in program history.

Athletic director Chad Eisentrager said Mead is a much better place because Coach Klatt is around, and taking down the third-ranked team in the state on Friday night is just gravy.

“I’ve been around 15 years and I’ve never seen anyone lead young men like him,” Eisentrager said. “He’s learned how to do it from one of the best coaches in Colorado history, and doing things the right way comes from his dad. He’s created this system where kids don’t want to disappoint, and if the football team buys in, then everyone else buys in too.”

Hailing from a football family, Klatt, brother of FOX Sports college football analyst/former University of Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt and son of longtime successful Pomona coach Gary Klatt, puts a large family emphasis in his coaching philosophy.

Week 4’s Denver Broncos high school coach of the week is Jason Klatt: a coach who puts life lessons and love before wins, and so just happened to develop a dang-good football program because of it.

    Question: Why do you coach?

Klatt: This is my 17th year coaching football at the high school level, and during that time, I’ve really honed in and focused on that question. I coach to help young men grow up and teach them lessons that will help with their lives.

Bottom line: I want the kids to be successful 10 years from now, and I want them to become great husbands, fathers, businessmen and leaders in their communities. It’s the only reason I coach and continue to do so.

Sports serve as a great avenue to teach those life lessons to kids. When your philosophy is based upon winning or championships, you’re just facing dead end roads.

Q: Why do you coach the way you do?

Klatt: I think we have a problem in our society that not enough young men are being brought up properly, and I want to help create solutions. I’m raising a 9-year-old daughter, and I know it’s so critical and important that we — as teachers, educators and coaches — are helping our young boys grow up to be great young men who accept responsibility for their actions, make good decisions and choices and know how to be a leader among their peers. When young men learn those things, their communities will be much better.

Q: How do you define success in coaching?

Klatt: There’s only one way, and that’s when a kid comes back five, 10 years from now and says, “Coach, I am this now — insurance salesman, lawyer, doctor — I have a wife, two kids, I’m a family man, I’m a leader in my community.” That’s success.

You can’t experience that until you’ve been coaching for a long time, and then years later, former players call you or come back and thank you for what you’ve done for them.

Q: What’s it like to be coached by you?

Klatt: Now this is a difficult question, because I haven’t always been the way I’m about to describe: Our team got off the field the other night after a great game, and I gave my dad a hug and I’ll never forget it. And he said he was proud of me.

I feel some young men haven’t experienced love the way I have. The first thing I’d say is I care about them immensely, and I tell them I love them and try as best as I can to not just tell them that, but to also show them with actions.

When kids know you care about them and their best interests are at heart, they’re going to run through brick walls for you.

Q: What’s your most meaningful experience with a team or player?

Klatt: I have a lot of meaningful experiences. Like starting the program at Mead. I came in 2012 — two years after it started. One of my coaches was my dad, and being able to bring him aboard after all his own coaching success (30 years at Pomona), build this program with him and bring the Mead football family together is something I’ll never forget, not one time.

It’s something that’s culminated in the last five years, and we made playoffs for the first time last year and were able to compete with a team that was ranked third in the state and win on Friday night.

Q: How has your dad helped you develop Mead’s football program?

Klatt: He was our defensive coordinator for three years, and last year I hired another guy and dad took a step back — he lives in Highlands Ranch and commutes. I like to call him a “quality control coach,” meaning he could do anything in any capacity. He’s worked with the defensive line, linebackers and been the defensive coordinator. He’s a fill-in guy who step in whenever someone is gone.

I talked to him this morning and he was telling me, “We have to do this, and this,” and even after a big win, like against Longmont, he’s right back at it to work the next day. We live in the moment for a brief period of time, but know how quickly we have to move on, because there’s another team ahead of us (3A’s No. 1-ranked Fort Morgan).

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Q: What have you learned from him about coaching?

Klatt: My dad taught me everything, and my fondest memories are being around him and the Pomona football program. But getting older and actually being involved — running things, teaching kids — he is just the gold standard and the example I look to as a coach.

He was so good with relationships with kids and building football culture in the family. He was so gifted as a coach, and I lean on him every time I need something.

Q: You’ve built Mead’s team to compete with powerhouse programs, and you took down No. 3 Longmont on Friday. Describe how that win feels.

    Klatt:
We preach and teach not to get too high on the highs and low on the lows, and it was just another game on the schedule. The kids played great, but we don’t want to get any more amped than that. As a coach, to step back and look at it and think about how far the program and mindset of our kids have come, and to actually walk out on the field with a team that is a big perennial power and compete with them, it’s feels more satisfactory the kids stood up and competed; they didn’t back down and let someone shove them around.

This has been a collective effort, and many people at Mead have made this program a success. It’s not just me — it’s a great community.

To the victors go the spoils.

After wins last week, Denver South now sits atop the Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings while La Junta takes the top spot in the 2A poll.

Discovery Canyon also jumps to No. 1 in the 3A poll despite previous No. 1 Fort Morgan not losing this week. Strasburg had a similar fortune this week, taking the No. 1 spot in 1A despite Paonia winning this weekend.

The Rebels got a hard-fought win over Heritage on Saturday and with Chatfield’s loss to Columbine earlier in the week, they traded places this week in the rankings.

Pine Creek (No. 4) and Ponderosa (No. 7) each jumped two spots from last week’s poll.

At No. 10, Mesa Ridge is the only new team in the 4A rankings.

In 2A, the Tigers ascend to No. 1 fresh off a win over Kent Denver, who held the top spot a week ago.

After a win over Pueblo Central, The Classical Academy jumps to No. 2 and will host No. 1 La Junta on Friday.

D’Evelyn (No. 5) and Manitou Springs (No. 6) each jumped two spots from a week ago. Florence comes in at No. 10 as the only new team in the 2A rankings.

Pomona hangs on to the top spot in 5A thanks to a comeback win over Valor Christian on Friday night.

Grandview made the biggest jump in the poll, ending up at No. 5 thanks to a big win over Cherry Creek.

Doherty comes in at No. 10 and is the only newcomer to the 5A rankings.

In 3A, the Discovery Canyon and Fort Morgan traded places at the top of the poll with the Thunder coming in as the new No. 1.

Thanks to a huge win over Longmont, Mead arrives to the 3A poll as the only newcomer, taking the No. 9 spot this week.

Despite Paonia receiving eight of 15 first-place votes, it’s Strasburg who lands at No. 1 in 1A. The Eagles fell only one spot to land at No. 2.

Meeker made a two-spot jump this week, landing at No. 5.

Peyton was the only new team to jump into the 1A poll, landing at No. 9.

A 22-20 win over Norwood keeps Sargent in the top spot of the 8-man poll.

The top seven teams overall from last week’s rankings held their position this week.

At No. 9 and 10 respectively, Pikes Peak Christian and Soroco are the two new teams in the 8-man poll.

Fleming hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 6-man with Kit Carson holding firm at No. 2.

North Park jumped three spots to land at No. 7 this week.

There is one newcomer in the 6-man poll with Peetz landing at No. 9.

  • Volleyball rankings: Mead, Eagle Valley join 4A poll

For the first time all season, all five top teams held their spots in the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings.

Rock Canyon, Lewis-Palmer, Eaton, Paonia and Felming all come in at No. 1 in their respective classes.

There was an air of consistency in the Class 5A rankings as the top three teams all went unchanged from last week. Arapahoe jumped two spots to come in at No. 4.

There were no new teams in 5A this week.

The Rangers hold firm at No. 1 in 4A with rival Cheyenne Mountain climbing one spot to land at No. 2.

Niwot and Silver Creek each jumped four spots to come in at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

Mead (No. 7) and Eagle Valley (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A poll.

Eaton still sits at No. 1 in the 3A rankings.

Middle Park made the biggest jump of the week, gaining three spots to land at No. 6.

Salida is the only new team in the 3A poll as the Spartans come in at No. 9.

Paonia (No. 1) and Dayspring Christian (No. 2) hold on to their spots from last week with nine of 10 first-place votes going to those two teams.

Hoehne makes a two-spot jump to come in at No. 3.

Simla (No. 6) and Denver Christian (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 2A rankings this week.

Fleming improved to 10-1 with a 3-0 win over Prairie last week and as a result, hang on to the No. 1 spot in 1A.

Undefeated Flagler made a four-spot jump to come in at No. 3 and took three first-place votes in the process.

There were no new teams in the 1A rankings this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.
