Valor Christian has regained the top spot in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com softball rankings.

Erie had been able to snag the top spot, but with both teams undefeated, it was the Eagles who came away with the votes this week.

Mullen jumped one spot to come in at No. 3 in the 4A poll this week while Air Academy was the only new addition at No. 7.

In 5A, Broomfield held the top spot after beating Fossil Ridge last week. The Sabercats take the No. 8 spot in the latest rankings.

Douglas County jumped from No. 10 to No. 3 thanks to getting three first-place votes.

At No. 9 and No. 10 respectively, Rocky Mountain and Fort Collins are the two newcomers to this week’s rankings.

Strasburg held firm in the top spot of the 3A poll this week as Rocky Ford hangs on to the No. 2 spot.

Valley jumped two spots to come in at No. 7 this week.

There were no new teams in the 3A rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Kent Denver’s Oliver Jack storms into lead on first day of 3A boys golf state tourney

AURORA — Oliver Jack caught fire on the final four holes to seize the lead after the first day of the Class 3A boys golf state tournament.

Jack, a junior at Kent Denver, birdied three of the final four holes to finish at even par for the day at Saddle Rock Golf Course. He sits one stroke ahead of a group of three golfers who finished at 1-over.

“I just started making some putts. I was hitting it kind of close all day, and I couldn’t really putt,” Jack said after his round. “I got them to drop at the end, which was nice.”

Of being in the individual lead, Jack added: “It feels really good. Tomorrow, hopefully I’ll start making putts earlier, but that’s all I can ask for right now.”

Jack finished tied for second at last season’s championship, and tied for sixth as a freshman.

His torrid finish on Monday also helped Kent Denver jump into a tie for first place in the team race. The Sun Devils — who got big rounds from Jackson Klutznick (+3), Ben Zimmerman (+6) and also Jack Friedman (+9) — are tied with Peak to Peak.

The Pumas were led by Ethan Tartaglia (+2), Ian Thorpe (+3) and Nishant Datta (+4). Sam Taylor, the defending individual champion, finished 12-over in the first round.

“Tomorrow’s a big day for a lot of the guys on our team,” Jack said. “They played well today.”

Aspen (+18) sits in third place in the team standings, Eaton (+19) is fourth, and Dawson (+21) is fifth.

It’s a crowded individual leaderboard, with seven players sitting within three shots of the lead.

“There are a lot of guys right behind me, so it’s pressure on me, but I feel good about the fact that I can maybe win tomorrow,” Jack said.

That the race for the title is so tight isn’t exactly unexpected. Nine of last year’s top 11 finishers returned to this year’s event, including Taylor, the defending individual champion, and 2014 champion Yale Kim of Dawson.

Kim was at the top of the leaderboard for much of the day, shooting 3-under on the front nine, and he finished his first round at 1-over. He is among the group of three tied in second place.

A senior, Kim is seeking his fourth-straight top-10 finish at state.

“I played a good round, I’m happy. I had fun, and I’m excited for tomorrow,” Kim said. “I’ve had a lot of (success) before, and I’m trying not to be too nervous since its my senior year, but I’m trying to have a lot of fun, and I’m trying to play the best golf that I can.”

Estes Park’s Ivan Richmond and Jefferson Academy’s Jacob Mason also shot 1-over in the first round.

Jack, Kim and Richmond will all tee off together in the final group on Tuesday morning at 10:57. Mason will tee off in the second-to-last group at 10:48 along with The Classical Academy’s Liam O’Halloran and Peak to Peak’s Tartaglia. O’Halloran and Tartaglia both finished at 2-over on Monday.

    Walker Franklin. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

The field also included two schools for the first time.

Prospect Ridge Academy, in its first year as a CHSAA member, qualified brothers Jaxon and Walker Franklin. Jaxon, a junior, is tied for 25th at 9-over. Walker, a freshman, briefly held the lead during the first round and finished tied for 13th at 5-over.

SkyView Academy also had its first-ever qualifier in Luke Wright, who shot 21-over on the first day and sits in a tie for 63rd.

  • No. 2 Denver South football denies No. 4 Heritage’s late comeback attempt

DENVER — There were 19 seconds left in regulation when Heritage was down by eight points to Denver South with the ball on the Rebels’ 6-yard-line. It was a tense situation, and when Eagles quarterback Chase Hansen threw the ball to the deep right corner of the end zone, Rebels cornerback Darrien Golden was there to snatch the ball and halt Heritage’s chance at pushing an overtime.

Denver South football, ranked No. 2 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 4A poll, remained undefeated at 4-0 after taking down No. 4 Heritage 31-23 at All City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Rebels had a lot of offensive momentum early on and scored touchdowns on the first two drives. The Eagles, now 2-2, were off to a slow start and struggled with the tough Denver South defense, but started making crucial plays led by Hansen in the second half.

Both teams came into this game pretty banged up on starters and had to rely on some backups to really step up.

“It was a good game, and we had four starters that were out,” Denver South coach Tony Lindsay said.

Senior tight end/linebacker Esaias Gandy, who was used as a tailback in this game, was a player who really came through in the clutch for the Rebels, and dominated on both sides of the ball.

“Man, he’s the Energizer Bunny,” Lindsay said. “He’s nonstop and he never comes out.”

On a fourth down in the Rebels’ first drive of the game, Gandy took the ball 67 yards to the house. He scored again late in the third quarter, and after the extra point was good, the Rebels were looking at a significant 31-10 lead over the Eagles.

“Everyone stepped up when we needed to and it was a close game at the end, but we finished it,” Gandy said. “On the offensive end, we had a few people down so I really had to step up.”

Running back sensation and human bulldozer Marcus Lindsay scored an early touchdown for the Rebels and was very effective in powering his way through and around defenders to get important first downs in the first half. He briefly went in for two plays during the second half, but ultimately remained on the sideline with cramps.

Senior Quinton Johnson also scored a touchdown for Denver South in the second quarter.

“Hats off to Denver South,” Heritage coach Tyler Knoblock said. “They were an incredibly physical football team with some really talented kids, and they’re ranked No. 2 in the state for a reason. It took our kids a while to respond.”

There were a few times Heritage made big plays to get in really great scoring position, but failed to capitalize on anything before time expired.

Juniors Josh Martin and Tyler Zoesch, who had a second quarter touchdown, made plays in the run and pass game for Heritage, and Hansen did a great job putting the ball in tough places and getting out of pressured situations. The offensive line really stepped up as well.

“We came back in the second half and finally started responding. Defensively we started getting some takeaways off them,” Knoblock said. “We were banged up coming in and got a little more banged up in this one, but we played for four quarters and we played tough.”

The late stress began with two quarterback keeper touchdowns. Within three minutes in the fourth quarter, Hansen took the ball to the end zone on short drives. But the biggest late Heritage play came on a fourth down conversion with just under 1:30 left in the game when Hansen threw it 14 yards to the 27, and the team began slowly driving — the the 11, then the 6 — before the Golden endzone pickoff abruptly ended the game.

“Great players make great plays, and that was one of those situations,” Lindsay said. “That really fired the guys up.”
