  • Evans, Sieg looking for a strong finish to impressive high school volleyball careers

They are two of the state’s elite talents, bursting onto the state volleyball scene as freshmen and immediately making their presence known.

But headed into the final few games of their respective regular seasons, senior Melissa Evans of Highlands Ranch and Tarynn Sieg of Eaton have found that their postseason paths have branched off in different directions.

Sieg has been a key part of three consecutive Class 3A state titles with Eaton, which is attempting to become the first program to win four championships in a row since Cheyenne Mountain won five in 4A from 2008-12.

Evans, on the other hand, is attempting to lead the Falcons back to state for the only second time in her tenure. Highlands Ranch was the No. 11 overall seed and hosted a regional last fall, but Fairview eliminated the Falcons on its way to the 5A title match.

“It was devastating for us not to reach our goal from the beginning of the season,” Evans said. “Those teams put everything on the court and it really shows. I think most of the girls on this team now understand that and we’re just trying to perform the best we can.”

Their collegiate career paths will separate even more next year – Evans is headed to North Carolina State to further her volleyball career, while Sieg will put her focus into track and field at Colorado State. But for now, the seniors have similar missions – make every second count for however long their time lasts.

“I honestly don’t feel like I only have a month left in the season, if that,” Sieg said. “I don’t think it’s really hit me that it’s going to be coming to an end. But I feel Thursday night it will hit me once my parents come down for senior night.

“This is the last volleyball for me. I don’t think it’s really hit me knowing that this is it. I don’t really get anything after this.”

Sieg wasted little time establishing herself in Eaton’s rotation her freshman season, finishing fourth on the team in kills and leading the Reds in blocks. Each year she has continued to progress, soaking in the knowledge from the seniors that came before her, like two-time Player of the Year Kortney Lockey and 2015 POY Caiden Rexius.

“Luckily I had seniors when I was growing in the sport that would allow me to express who I was on the court,” Sieg said. “They allowed me to be a leader, and one way I’m changing this year is knowing how to let the underclassmen express themselves … knowing my way of leadership isn’t the only way.”

Sieg has been honored as first-team all-state by CHSAANow.com in each of the previous two seasons. She tallied 301 kills and 92 blocks as a junior, and is up to 242 kills and 93 blocks this season with two regular-season matches remaining.

“She’s always made an impact and she knows she gives us her best and that’s what we expect from her,” Eaton coach Gwen Forster said. “Now it’s different in the fact that that this is her senior year, and she’s got to have everybody on board with her too.”

Sieg is one of six seniors for the Reds, who have won 16 in a row since dropping their season opener to 4A powerhouse Lewis-Palmer. Sophomore Makenzie Harris has been a good complement to Sieg, and junior setter Chelsey Lockey continues to excel in running the team’s potent offense.

Eaton, ranked No. 1 in 3A, closes with No. 5 Resurrection Christian and No. 3 Valley this week.

Sieg said that the way she’s been able to connect with teammates has been the most important part of her time at Eaton, and that those memories will mean more in the long run.

Instead of attempting to match what past teams have accomplished, she said pursuing a fourth state title is more about continuing the growth of the program in the future.

“If you try to live with what they’ve done in the past,” she said, “you only relive what they did and you don’t live in your own moment.”

    Evans, Falcons are chasing state

For three years, Evans and her older sister Jasmine were a force to be reckoned with for the Falcons. Jasmine led Highlands Ranch in kills in 2013 and 2014, with Melissa not far behind. Last year it was Melissa’s turn to lead, as the 6-foot right-side hitter soared to a team-high 439 kills to Jasmine’s 378.

While the sisters may be apart this year, it won’t be for long. Both players will begin their college careers at N.C. State next year. (Jasmine took this year off to recover from a foot injury.)

“We’ll be playing together again for the next four years, so that will be pretty exciting,” Melissa said. “That was exciting for me to know that N.C. State really wanted to see both of us in their program.”

There is still some unfinished business that needs to be handled first though. After a slow start to the season thanks to some growing pains, Highlands Ranch is currently ranked seventh in 5A and is on a seven-match winning streak headed into Tuesday night’s Continental League contest with Heritage.

Junior Kelsie Milkowski is second on the team to Evans in kills and digs, and the team has utilized a pair of setters to run the offense.

The Falcons got off to a 6-0 start in the league and earlier this season handed top-ranked Rock Canyon its only loss. But Highlands Ranch, ranked No. 7 in 5A, closes the regular season against No. 6 Mountain Vista and No. 8 Chaparral before a rematch with No. 1 Rock Canyon.

“This next part of the season will be a lot tougher than the first half,” Falcons coach Louis Krauss said. “If we want to do anything at state, we’re going to have to be consistent and maintain that consistency and not have those mental errors we’ve had at times.”

Evans said she’s worked to be more consistent in her hitting in her first full year playing the outside. She said over the final few weeks she has tried to better herself in other areas to be a complete player.

“Melissa has always been athletically pretty gifted. Over the years she has gotten better with her focus on the details and a little more focus on the weight room and getting stronger so she can maintain throughout the year,” Krauss said. “She’s always been real competitive though. She doesn’t like to lose, and that’s a good quality.”

Last year’s setback has been a big motivating factor for Evans and her teammates. Krauss noted that his squad had to battle in the regional opener last November to outlast Columbine, and didn’t have much left for Fairview.

That’s something that can’t happen this time around if Highlands Ranch wants to return to the Denver Coliseum.

“Practices are more about maintaining mental focus and being able to repeat quality plays over and over again instead of having a few flashes here or there,” he said. “That’s what it takes at regionals.

“It’s pretty fresh in their minds how that worked last year as well.”

    Team ranking criteria

    1. Average the top three best team scores for each team as reported during the regular season to CHSAANow.com
    2. The top scores were placed in regions in a “serpentine” pattern into three regionals by classification (5A: Team #s: 1, 6, 7, 12,  = Region 1; Team #s: 2, 5, 8, 11= Region 2; 5A #s: 3, 4, 9, 10= Region 3; 4A: Team #s: 1, 6, 7, 12, 13 = Region 1; Team #s: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 = Region 2; Team #s: 3, 4, 9, 10 = Region 3)
    3. Once the teams have been determined by classification for each region, the committee then ranked them by average team score to begin the drawings for competition rotations; with the top four teams garnering rotations 9-12;
    4. Region 1 is at Overland High School, Region 2 at Mountain Range and Region 3 will be held at Arvada West. All regionals are on Saturday, October 29.

  • Longmont Christian QB obliterates state passing records; WR sets receiving mark

Luke Puchino set the state football record book on fire on Friday night.

As first noted by MaxPreps’ Gerry Valerio, the Longmont Christian senior quarterback threw for 706 yards and nine touchdowns in a 6-man 83-75 loss to Briggsdale. He also rushed for 89 yards and another score.

Reached Sunday evening, Longmont Christian coach Anthony Barela confirmed the stats output.

“Neither team could tackle,” he said, laughing.

As a result, Puchino now owns the following records:

    • Passing yards in a game. The previous best was 607 yards, set last season by Holy Family’s Chris Helbig.
    • Passing touchdowns in a game. The previous best was eight, set first by Ellicott’s Ryan Miller in 2008, and then tied by Poudre’s Cody Limmer in 2013.
    • Passing touchdowns in three consecutive games (18). He threw seven against Prairie two weeks ago, and two against Pawnee last season. The previous best was 17, set by Helbig last season.
    • Total offensive yards (795). He eclipsed the previous mark held by Woodlin’s Harold Klausner, which was set 11 years earlier — on the exact same day.
    • In addition, wide receiver Cameron Jauregui set the state record for receiving yards in a game with 356. The previous best was 356, set last season by Holy Family’s Joe Golter.

Other notable marks from the game:

    • Puchino’s 10 total touchdowns are tied for the third-highest total in state history.
    • The combined 158 points between Briggsdale and Longmont Christian are the third-most in a game.
    • Longmont Christian’s 798 total yards as a team are the sixth-most in state history.

Briggsdale hasn’t yet uploaded stats from the game, so there may be more to come from this one.

Puchino’s previous career high in passing yards was 519, which came against Prairie earlier this season. That is currently the 14th-highest total in state history. He also had a 505-yard game against Justice in 2014.

“He has an absolute cannon for an arm,” Barela said.

Puchino has thrown for 2,464 yards this season. He has a chance to break into the top-15 in a season when Longmont Christian (0-7) closes its regular season against Mountain Valley next week.

Puchino is also a basketball player, and averaged 17.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game last season. Barela said that he “could be a Division I player if he works on his footwork.” As it is, the coach added, he is getting a few looks from Division II schools.

Jauregui, meanwhile, also had 125 kickoff return yards and 20 punt return yards, giving him 501 all-purpose yards. That figure is the second most in state history.

Jauregui also had five receiving touchdowns, which is tied for the third-most in state history. He also forced a fumble and recovered a fumble in the game, and finished with 12 tackles.

Jauregui had a five-touchdown game against Prairie earlier this season, and now has 15 TD catches so far this season.

Longmont Christian did not field a program last season due to a lack of players — making these performances all the more incredible.

“I think we’re headed in the right direction,” Barela said, noting the his roster of 17 players includes nine freshmen. “We’re looking to put everything together against Mountain Valley next week.”

Silver Creek is playing its best football at the right time.

And thanks to a 28-14 win over Fort Morgan on Friday, the Raptors jumped to No. 2 in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

They are now firmly entrenched behind Discovery Canyon, which held on to its No. 1 spot thanks to a thrilling win over Lewis-Palmer.

Rifle was the only new team to break into the 3A poll, coming in at No. 10.

Pomona hung on to the top spot in the 5A rankings and Mullen was able to stay at No. 2 thanks a blocked extra point in overtime that gave the Mustangs a 28-27 win over No. 5 Columbine.

The rest of the 5A rankings remained fairly consistent as no new teams broke into the poll.

In 4A, Denver South, Chatfield and Pine Creek all held their spots at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Mesa Ridge made the biggest jump of the week, gaining two spots to come in at No. 8. Greeley West (No. 9) and Monarch (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A poll.

La Junta remains the undisputed No. 1 team in 2A, receiving every first-place vote in the process.

There were no new teams in the 2A rankings this week.

Strasburg hangs to the No. 1 spot in 1A with Paonia still hanging right behind them at No. 2.

Meeker was able to overtake Platte Canyon as the No. 3 team in the rankings with both teams still undefeated on the year.

The 1A poll also had no new teams this week.

Thanks to receiving eight of 12 first-place votes, Sargent is still the No. 1 team in the 8-man rankings.

Akron jumped one spot to come in at No. 3 and at No. 9, West Grand is the only new addition to the 8-man poll.

Fleming edged out Kit Carson by one vote to hang on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings.

  • Volleyball rankings: Dayspring Christian moves up to No. 1 in 2A

It’s Dayspring Christian’s week to shine in the Class 2A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings.

Powered by sweeps over Gilpin County and Dawson, the Eagles are the new No. 1 team in the rankings. They are the only new No. 1 team in any class this week.

Paonia, who sat at No. 1 a week ago, dropped only one spot to No. 2.

Yuma made a noticeable jumping, gaining three spots to land at No. 3. There were no new  teams in the 2A poll this week.

Rock Canyon held its spot as the top team in 5A, but it was Arapahoe, not Fossil Ridge, coming in at No. 2. The Sabercats dropped one spot to land at No. 3.

Loveland was the lone newcomer in 5A, joining the rankings at No. 10.

Lewis-Palmer and Cheyenne Mountain remained at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in this week’s 4A poll.

The two traditional volleyball powers will face-off Thursday in a game that will in all likelihood decide the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference Championship.

Montrose jumped into the 4A poll at No. 9, the only newcomer this week.

Like 5A and 4A, the top team in the 3A poll went unchanged as Eaton holds a firm grip on that spot.

Valley made the big jump this week to land at No. 3, two spots better than last week’s rankings.

Pagosa Springs (No. 9) and Coal Ridge (No. 10) were the two newcomers to the 3A poll.

Fleming hung on to the No. 1 spot in 1A with Kit Carson still biting its heels at No. 2.

Weldon Valley (No. 4) and Nucla (No. 5) each gained a spot from a week ago.

There were no new teams in the 1A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Cheyenne Mountain returns to No. 1 in 4A

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

A week after falling out of the top spot in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings, Cheyenne Mountain is back at No. 1.

With a 3-0 win over Air Academy last week, the Indians clinched the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference title and look to be the team to beat as the regular season comes to a close this week.

The Classical Academy, who sat atop the rankings last week, drop only to No. 2.

Thanks a recent tie with Cheyenne Mountain and a win last week over Lewis-Palmer, Palmer Ridge cracks the 4A rankings at No. 7 this week.

Boulder won both its games last week and remains undefeated on the year, giving voters plenty of reasons to keep them at the No. 1 spot in 5A.

Denver East and Broomfield also held firm at No. 2 and No. 3.

Fort Collins made a two-spot jump to No. 8 while Arapahoe (No. 9) and Ralston Valley (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 5A poll.

Kent Denver is still the No. 1 team in 3A with KIPP, Vail Mountain and Jefferson Academy hanging on to their spots at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

DSST-Stapleton, the lone newcomer in the 3A rankings — lands at No. 6.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.
