  • NFHS launches #MyReasonWhy campaign

    My Reason Why NFHS

INDIANAPOLIS — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and its 51 state high school associations begin the annual celebration of National High School Activities Month today with the launch of the #MyReasonWhy campaign.

The #MyReasonWhy campaign is designed to showcase the tremendous value that high school sports and activities offer to students. With real-life examples, #MyReasonWhy will show that high school students involved in education-based activity programs demonstrate a higher level of academic performances and set themselves up for successful careers following high school graduation.

Through the #MyReasonWhy campaign, the NFHS and its member state high school associations are working to ensure that education-based programs are available for years to come. This national campaign will demonstrate why:

    • Participation in high school sports has increased every year for the past 27 years.
    • Thousands of men and women coach high school sports for their entire career – even, at times, with the opportunity to coach at higher levels.
    • More than four million high school students are involved annually in performing arts programs.
    • Many communities across the country shut down on Friday nights in the fall to support the local high school football team.
    • Many individuals give up personal time in the evenings and on weekends to officiate high school sports.

Each of the 51 state associations is equipped with a customized digital toolkit to help promote this important campaign highlighting high school students.

Students, as well as parents, coaches, officials and others in the community, will be encouraged to submit real-life stories about their reasons for participating in high school sports and activity programs. These stories will be submitted on the campaign website at www.nfhs.org/myreasonwhy and through the #MyReasonWhy link at the top of the NFHS home page. Additional information can be found on all NFHS social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

“We are excited about the #MyReasonWhy campaign as yet another avenue to spread the message about the values of these programs to young people,” said Bob Gardner, NFHS executive director. “We look forward to reading these accounts of why students, coaches and officials are involved in high school activities.”

The launch of the #MyReasonWhy campaign coincides with National High School Activities Month, which was started in 1980 as National High School Activities Week to increase the public’s awareness of the values and needs of interscholastic activity programs.

The foundation for National High School Activities Month is similar to principles of the #MyReasonWhy campaign, looking to remind students, parents, coaches, officials and others in our communities about the value of education-based activities in their daily lives.

High school activities help address society’s most current issues by:

    • Finding and nurturing the best effort of each young participant;
    • Encouraging students to stay in school, perform better academically and become better citizens;
    • Demanding respect for fair play and appreciation for the equitable application of procedures, rules and regulations;
    • Providing healthy lifestyle instruction;
    • Challenging racism, sexism and classism through the active pursuit of teamwork and school spirit.

Each week throughout the month-long celebration will feature a specific emphasis: National Sportsmanship, Fan Appreciation and Public-Address Announcers Week (October 1-8); National Performing Arts Activities Week (October 10-15); National Coaches/Sponsors/Advisors/Officials Week (October 17-22); and National Community Service/Youth Awareness Week (October 24-31).

“We have fundamental, empirical evidence that interscholastic activities provide a successful way in which to create healthy and successful citizens,” Gardner said. “Through National High School Activities Month, we have an opportunity to reflect on our participation as well as the participation of our children. Our nation must continue to support these programs and the life skills they provide America’s youth.”

To help schools recognize National High School Activities Month, the NFHS has provided materials that include ways to celebrate the month-long events, along with The Case for High School Activities. These materials, in addition to other information about National High School Activities Month, can be found on the NFHS website.

  • Field hockey rankings: Kent Denver moves up to No. 1

While there were no new teams added to the CHSAANow.com field hockey rankings this week, there were plenty of notable changes.

The most significant change was the team at the top as Kent Denver assumes the No. 1 position this week. This marks consecutive weeks that there has been a new top-team in the rankings.

The Sun Devils snagged a 2-0 win over Denver East last week, which played a huge part in their surge to the top of the poll. The Angels fell to No. 5, but remained in the rankings.

Palmer Ridge assumed the top spot last week after ending Colorado Academy’s 78-game unbeaten streak, but followed that up with a 2-0 loss to Cherry Creek.

As a result, the Bruins jumped to No. 2 and the Bears come in at No. 3.

Colorado Academy drops two spots to No. 4 due to the strong play of all of the teams in the rankings this week.

The ranking, voted upon by coaches, is the official poll of the Association. Rankings are released each Monday during the season.

  • Football rankings: Pueblo West, Skyline among newcomers

The Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings has some fresh faces with the release of this week’s rankings, and it’s happening at the right time.

Pueblo West comes into the poll at No. 9 and Skyline is right behind them at No. 10.

With a 28-0 win over Niwot on Friday, the Falcons remain undefeated on the year and received enough support from the voters to be regarded as a top-10 team.

The Cyclones have won three-straight games after surrendering their first two of the season. Wins against Pueblo South and Dakota Ridge got them votes, but it was the  57-20 win over Coronado on Saturday that pushed them into the poll.

Denver South hung on to the top spot in 4A, taking 16 of 17 first-place votes.

Coming off a bye, Pomona hung on to the No. 1 position in 5A, but Mullen was able to jump one spot to No. 2.

Fairview (No. 6) and Doherty (No. 9) also jumped one spot from a week ago. Despite coming up short against No. 8 Valor Christian last Thursday, Cherry Creek stayed in the rankings at No. 10 meaning no new teams broke into the 5A rankings.

    Discovery Canyon Vista Ridge football
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Discovery Canyon made a statement against Vista Ridge Friday night and as a result, hang on to the No. 1 spot in 3A.

After snagging a couple of first-place votes, Lewis-Palmer jumped to No. 3, one spot above where they were a week ago.

Longmont made the big 3A jump of the week, leaping three spots to come in at No. 7.

There were no new teams in the 3A rankings this week.

In 2A, both La Junta (No. 1) and The Classical Academy (No. 2) maintained their spots after a thrilling showdown Friday night that saw the Tigers come away with the late win.

La Junta’s schedule does not get any easier this week as they host Manitou Springs, which jumped to No. 4 after a homecoming win over Lamar.

At No. 10, sterling is the only new team to break into the 2A poll.

Strasburg hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 1A as all 10 teams from last week’s rankings remained in the this week’s poll.

Peyton made the big jump of the week to come in at No. 7, two spots better than they were previously ranked.

In 8-man, Sargent took five of 13 first-place votes to hang on to the top spot.

Merino made a three-spot leap to come in at No. 4.

There were no new teams in the 8-man rankings.

Still undefeated, Fleming holds strong as the No. 1 team in 6-man with Kit Carson hanging tight at No. 2.

Cotopaxi (No. 5) and Peetz (No. 6) each jumped three spots from last week’s rankings.

At No. 10, Genoa-Hugo is the only new team in the 6-man rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Volleyball rankings: Pueblo West joins 4A poll

Pueblo West has jumped into the Class 4A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings at No. 6. The Cyclones have rattled off four-straight wins and haven’t even dropped a set since Sept. 16

Lewis-Palmer is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 4A and is looking more like the team that won back-to-back state championships in 2014 and 2015.

Berthoud also broke into the 4A poll this week, coming in at No. 9.

Rock Canyon is still the No. 1 team in a very competitive 5A class. The Jaguars are undefeated in league play and have not lost since Sept. 3.

Mountain Vista (No. 4) and Highlands Ranch (No. 8) are both two spots better than they were in last week’s poll.

At No. 8, Ralston Valley is the only new team in the 5A poll.

Eaton is still receiving every first-place vote in 3A to hang on to the position it has held all season long.

Colorado Springs Christian School jumped three spots to come in at No. 2, but University had the biggest jump of the week, improving four spots to land at No. 4.

Bayfield is the only new team in the 3A poll, coming in at No. 9.

Paonia still has a firm grasp on the No. 1 spot in 2A with Dayspring Christian still holding strong at No. 2.

Yuma jumped three spots to land at No. 4.

There were no new teams in the 2A poll this week.

While Fleming held its position at No. 1 in 1A, there were plenty of changes to speak of in that poll.

McClave jumped a staggering five spots to come in at No. 4 this week.

There were also three new teams in the 1A poll, the most of any class in this set of rankings.

Holly comes in at No. 8, Heritage Christian lands at No. 9 and Sierra Grande rounds out the poll at No. 10.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Cheyenne Mountain bumps up to No. 1 in 4A

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Cheyenne Mountain is back on top of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings. The Indians had taken the top spot in the Sept. 6 poll, but a loss knocked them out of first on Sept. 19.

But a 2-1 win over Lewis-Palmer last Thursday was enough to put them back in the driver’s seat.

Air Academy only slipped down to No. 2 with the rankings and will have a chance to match the Indians’ move from last week as they’ll face Lewis-Palmer on Thursday.

Greeley Central broke into the 4A rankings at No. 9, the only newcomer this week.

In 5A, Boulder is still the No. 1 team, but has fresh company on its heels as Denver East jumps to No. 2.

Mountain Vista made a two-spot jump to come in at No. 6 this week, while Arapahoe broke in at No. 8, the only new team to the 5A poll.

Kent Denver remains the No. 1 team in 3A, but Metro League rival Jefferson Academy made a jump to No. 2, three spots better than a week ago.

The Jaguars’ only loss of the season was to the Sun Devils back on Sept. 15.

Vail Mountain also made a three-spot leap to come in at No. 3.

One new team climbed into the 3A poll as Basalt comes in at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Broncos high school football coach of the week: Legacy’s Wayne Voorhees

Legacy football coach Wayne Voorhees is in perhaps the most unique coaching situation of his career this season.

The veteran coach, now in his 14th season, is helping to guide the Lightning in the wake of a bus crash his team was involved in while returning home from an out-of-state game. The crash killed the driver, and left Voorhees and two of his assistants in the hospital. Voorhees himself fractured his skull, and suffered other facial injuries.

Legacy played its homecoming game that next week under interim coach Matt Craddock, and won. It was a healing moment for the community.

Now, the Lightning are 4-1 following a 27-15 win over Overland in Week 5, and Voorhees, who returned to the sideline in that game, is ready to turn his attention to football.

    Wayne Voorhees bio

Years as head coach: 14 (77-54 overall; 4-1 in 2016)

    Years at Legacy: 17

Previous stops: Legacy defensive coordinator (2000-02); Horizon assistant (1993-1999).

    Question: Why do you coach?

Voorhees: I think the biggest thing is seeing kids develop over their four years of high school. It’s great to be a part of that. As kids mature and get bigger, stronger, and mentally stronger, it’s neat to see how they deal with things over the course over their four-year career.

Q: Why do you coach in the way that you do?

Voorhees: I kind of think I’m somewhat of a player’s coach, but still has discipline, if that makes sense. I definitely want to hear what kids have to say and get their buy-in as far as what we’re doing, and why. Really, that’s the biggest thing: the why part. I don’t think enough of us over the years do a good enough job communicating the why.

That’s one thing I definitely try to do, which doesn’t always happen, but I think it helps kids buy in a little bit more to, “Why are we doing what we’re doing?” It’s not just because I said so, it’s, “This is the reason that we’re doing it.”

Q: How would you define success in coaching?

Voorhees: Obviously wins and losses are important, but as you look at your team: are you developing week by week as you get further into the season?

We’ve had some years that we didn’t have a great record, and that might have been some of our best coaching years, where we’ve developed kids and we kept getting better but we didn’t necessarily show it as far as wins and losses.

Q: What would you say it’s like to be coached by you?

Voorhees: I hope that our kids would say that I definitely listen to them and keep their opinions at heart, even if that doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to move in a good direction.

I hope that they would say that we’re positive and they understand why we’re doing what we’re doing. You know, staying positive and trying to bring out the best in all of our kids.

Q: What is your most meaningful experience that you’ve had with your team, or maybe an individual player?

Voorhees: This is probably back maybe seven or eight years ago. As coaches, we are constantly wanting to be — we want everything to be a certain way. We want to keep getting better.

We had a win over Greeley West — this is years ago — and they were really good team and we were really good team, and we won 6-0. I got upset after the game because I didn’t think we were playing as well as we were capable of playing, and we were in the locker room after the game, and I was trying to get to get everybody cleared out and get on the bus and get going and get home.

One of our guys says, “You know coach, you do remember we won, right?” And that really stuck with me because all of the things that we try to get geared into kids’ heads, that we want to be perfect and we want to have a great game, but when it came down to it, we did have team success.

I actually told that story to a kid — we didn’t play very well against Overland and it was a kid who didn’t play well himself — and I told him the same story. I said, “You know what? We won. We’re going to get better next week.”

Q: With what you guys have gone through, it’s become pretty apparent the amount of resilience this group has. That’s been pretty incredible, at least from an outsider’s perspective. What’s that been like from within the program?

Voorhees: We’ve had great weeks of preparation, and we’ve done a good job of talking about — with coach Craddock a couple of weeks ago — just talking about what’s going on, letting them vent if they needed to. We really haven’t had a whole lot of dialogue necessarily. The kids haven’t brought a lot of things up.

We knew we were going to have some emotional highs and lows, and we played pretty well the past couple of weeks. Last week, we didn’t play particularly well, and I don’t know if it was a let-down from all the stuff that’s been going on over the past couple of weeks, or looking at some of the scores.

We beat Horizon pretty convincingly a couple of weeks ago, and they beat Overland. I don’t know if that was part of it, just thinking that we were going to be able to show up and have success. And that didn’t happen, because they’re coached well and they play hard, and it was their homecoming.

    Legacy Prairie View football
    (Morgan Dzak/CHSAANow.com)

Q: The outpouring of support that you guys have received from communities across the state, communities in California has been great.

Voorhees: It’s really been amazing. Obviously, the state of Colorado and the Broomfield area has been amazing. Just even outreach from guys you’ve met over the years, athletic directors and district athletic directors.

The football community is really pretty tight, even though they’re your opponents, and you don’t talk actively all the time. The amount of guys that I’ve had reach out to me has been unbelievable.

Q: And how is your recovery coming personally?

Voorhees: I’m doing pretty good. I was kind of telling our coaches this morning in game-planning, and this kind of sounds callous, but I’m kind of over it. I’d like to move on.

I’m not 100 percent by any means, and I appreciate everything, but I mean I walk down the hall at school and I’ve got to hug 43 people as I go to the conference room (laughs).

You know what? I’m trying to coach the football team, I’m trying to get us going. I appreciate all that other stuff, I really do, and it’s good to see everybody, but it’s time to start moving on and moving through the season.

Q: Now you guys are 4-1, playing really well heading into conference play. How are you feeling about the start of that schedule?

Voorhees: We’ve got Regis this week and they’re a good football team, and we’re excited about the opportunity.

We’ve seen some of their game film, and they do a lot of things real well. We know, as a first league game, this is a big one for us. They’re the 1 seed, if you will, in the waterfall, we’re the 2 seed, and we know our league championship goes through them.

    Legacy Prairie View football
    (Morgan Dzak/CHSAANow.com)

Q: What do you like most about your football team going forward?

Voorhees: I actually told them this at the beginning of last week. The thing I really like about this group — we had a great trip to California, this whole accident has probably brought us a little closer together, but they play hard on every play.

We got down to Chino Hills, we were down 13-0. And before I knew it, we were up 14-13. There have been some teams over the years that the clock could’ve been running at halftime because we would’ve been mentally down and all those other things.

Our kids live to play the next play, and they play hard. That’s the one thing I really like about our guys. It doesn’t necessarily matter what just happened, the score, if we turn the ball over — whatever it may be. We live to play another play.
