ARVADA — The eventual-game winning goal by Standley Lake senior Hunter Rouse on Wednesday night at the North Area Athletic Complex appeared to slow time itself.

“That goal seemed liked it took a lot longer than it actually did to go in,” Rouse said after the Gators defeated Pueblo Centennial 1-0 in the opening round of the Class 4A boys soccer state tournament. “I’m very happy it went in.”

Rouse broke the scoreless game in the 52nd minute. Rouse was able to elude a Bulldog defender and slid a shot past Pueblo Centennial freshman goalie Jesse Chavez. The shot hit the left post, but deflected to the right and trickled into the back of the net to give the Gators the lead.

“Hunter is a special kid to me. I’ve been coaching him a long, long time in club and high school,” Standley Lake coach Mike Day said. “For him, his senior year, to get that goal was really special. I was just excited he got that opportunity to put that one in. He finished it.”

The No. 14 seed Gators (10-4-2) face No. 3 The Classical Academy (14-2) in the second round Tuesday, Nov. 1, in Colorado Springs. The Titans cruised past Windsor with a 6-0 victory Wednesday afternoon. TCA hasn’t allowed an opponent goal in its past nine games.

There will be some extra motivation for Standley Lake next week. TCA defeated the Gators in the state semifinals last season.

“I’m pretty excited about the opportunity to go down there,” Day said of facing last year’s state runner-up. “This is a pretty young team and we’re playing with house money.”

Pueblo Centennial (11-4) nearly evened the game at 1-1 in the 55th minute. In the Bulldogs’ best scoring chance, senior Seth Legan slid the ball from a tough angle, but ball went through the goal mouth and eventually across the end line.

Standley Lake sophomore Erik Macias nearly made it a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute, but his shot just sailed wide.

“Right when I missed I was thinking that hopefully (Pueblo Centennial) doesn’t score because I would have felt it was my fault,” Macias said.

Day graduated nine seniors from last year’s state semifinal team. Even Macias said he is surprised Standley Lake is in position to make another long postseason journey.

“We need another run. We need to go down and beat TCA,” Rouse said. “I think we are going to make another run.”

Jeffco schools showed evidence they could make another strong state tournament showing. Evergreen and Standley Lake both made the 4A semifinals last season. The Cougars eventually won the state title.

D’Evelyn, 4A Jeffco League champion, went on the road as the No. 17 seed and blanked No. 16 Denver North 3-0 in the first-round.

The Jaguars (11-4-1) get the task of facing No. 1 seed Cheyenne Mountain on the road in the second round Tuesday, Nov. 1. However, D’Evelyn handed the Indians (14-1-1) their only loss of the season with a 4-1 Jaguar victory in a non-league game Sept. 13 at Lakewood Memorial Field.

“I definitely think someone from Jeffco is going to be in there in the end,” Day said.

No. 20 Evergreen stayed in the mix to defend its title with victory in penalty kicks at No. 13 Niwot. Evergreen and Niwot played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer before the visiting Cougars from Jeffco dominated the shootout, 4-1.

“There is a lot of talent here in Jeffco,” Rouse said.

Green Mountain was the only Jeffco school to get bounced in the first round. Mullen defeated the No. 28 seed Rams 4-0.

  • Coin flips: Future home sites for playoff football games on Nov. 4-5

The following information shows the designated home team for potential playoff football matchups to be completed by Saturday, Nov. 4. The formula for determining the home team is shown on page 50 of the football bulletin.

Sites are determined each week at the CHSAA office, one-and-a-half weeks prior to the next round. When possible, this will be live-streamed.
    [divider]

    Explanation

How the home sites are determined.

    • For 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A: The team with the fewest playoff home games will host. If equal, the higher seed will host.
    • For 2A: The team with the fewest playoff home games will host. If equal, the higher seed will host. Exception: If playoff home games are equal, and the opponents are from the same conference, the school with the higher conference standing in the regular season shall be the host.
    • For 8-man and 6-man: The team with the fewest playoff home games will host. If equal, a coin flip determines the home team.
    • In 3A, the higher seed will host the championship game regardless of the number of home games.

  • Casey: Ideas for tweaking the CHSAA RPI formula

EDITOR’S NOTE: Opinions in this column do not reflect an official viewpoint of CHSAA.

I’ve spent a number of hours staring at spreadsheets each week this fall.

This actually isn’t atypical for me, but I do seem to have my laptop on my lap late at night more often, eyes fixed on the bottom right corner of the screen as I watch a percentage slowly increase.

See, this is the problem with the RPI: it takes so long to process in Excel.

Oh, you thought I was going to go somewhere else with that?

Yes, the RPI has been under some scrutiny since it was first implemented with baseball last spring. That scrutiny has picked up once football’s RPI standings were released following Week 6 games.

You know what? There are valid arguments against the system, or data that makes you go, Hmm … — but, no, it is not the end of the world, as some of the usual suspects would have you believe.

Since the RPI was implemented, the CHSAA office, Board of Directors, and committees have said that there would be unforeseen issues that we’d have to deal with, and that we would have to live through a season or two to see how it played out.

We are currently seeing how it’s playing out, so it’s time to take a hard look and see what changes might be needed.

The good news here is that there can be tweaks to this formula in the middle of a two-year cycle, and it’s up to individual sports committees to do that.

Before we start, these changes assume basic knowledge of the CHSAA RPI formula. To familiarize yourself with it, the best place to start is the CHSAA RPI FAQs. We’ll be using acronyms like WP (winning percentage), OWP (opponents’ winning percentage), and OOWP (opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage).

Currently, the RPI formula used in all sports is:

    RPI = (¼ × WP) + (½ × OWP) + (¼ × OOWP)

    [divider]

Possible changes to the CHSAA RPI

    Denver South football practice generic
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

    1. Change the percentages used in the formula itself.

We’ve said from the beginning with this formula that the more data you put into the formula, the more accurate it becomes. That’s why, by and large, the right teams have made the postseason fields in softball, field hockey and boys soccer — the only sports to have completely finalized RPI data so far this fall. Each sport has anywhere between 15-19 games.

This becomes problematic for football, which only has eight games of data for 6-man teams, nine for 8-man/1A/2A and 10 for 3A/4A/5A. That’s part of the reason a classification modifier was implemented for football, but for no other sports.

We’ve talked to dozens of coaches and athletic directors about the RPI this fall. Consistently, they’ve said that they feel a team’s own winning percentage should account for more of the formula. We took that feedback, and ran it in the formula.

There are two options we’ve heard more than the rest: splitting each competent evenly into thirds; and then really weighting winning percentage more — namely 37.5 percent of the formula.

The thirds formula is as follows:

    RPI = (⅓ × WP) + (⅓ × OWP) + (⅓ × OOWP)

The other formula, what we’ll call 37.5, is:

    RPI = (0.375 × WP) + (0.375 × OWP) + (¼ × OOWP)

Below is the data from soccer, softball and field hockey with those proposed splits; where teams did rank, and where they would rank. Note that teams are sorted by the current RPI formula, and the new data is at the far right.

As you can see, tweaking the formula does perhaps provide a more accurate picture.

By the way, these changes to the formula would have also improved baseball’s seeding last season. For example, Cherokee Trail, the eventual 5A champion, was No. 13 in the final RPI. The Cougars would have been No. 4 in the 1/3 formula, and No. 5 in the 37.5 formula.

We’ve also run these scenarios for volleyball, and it does seem to help that sport, as well.

Personally, I believe the 1/3 formula is the way to go across all sports.

    2. Consider a classification modifier in all sports.

4A state softball Valor Christian Thomas Jefferson
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

This isn’t going to be as detailed as the section above, because we haven’t run the data yet, but I believe the addition of a classification modifier in all sports — something football is already using — will only help.

Currently, there are teams that are getting the same amount of points for beating a 15-4 team in 3A as they are for beating a 15-4 team in 5A. More often than not, those two opponents vary in terms of difficulty.

There is a downside here: If this were to be implemented, it would affect multi-class leagues two ways.

First, teams in the higher classification (for example, 4A), would potentially be penalized for having lower class teams (for example, 3A) in their league.

Second, the opposite would also be true. In the example, the 3A teams would get a boost for beating the 4A teams — an opportunity others in their classification may not even have the chance to schedule.

Football’s current classification modifier has a one-time exemption to allow teams to continue to play one traditional rival (or another opponent) without being penalized, and I imagine a similar exemption would exist were this to be implemented in all sports.

    3. Use the CHSAANow.com polls in the formula.

This is something I’ve advocated for since before the move to RPI, as I believe it would add a much-needed human element to the formula.

The use of the CHSAANow.com polls in the CHSAA RPI can reward teams for big wins, but also for being ranked.

There is already a model we can use to do this. Check out the NAIA modified RPI.

Rangeview boys basketball coach Shawn Palmer actually wrote a column in favor of this very thing last spring. Rangeview spent much of last season No. 1 in the 5A poll, and eventually reached the Final 4 as part of a 26-1 season. They likely would not have been rated very highly by the RPI due to a relatively low strength of schedule that can at least in part be attributed to the league they play in — which had just three of 10 teams finish over .500 last season.

The coaches poll can be a good counter-balance to a situation such as that. Again, the more data the goes into the RPI formula, the more accurate it will be.

Some are hesitant to adopt this as part of the CHSAA RPI for fear that coaches may try and manipulate their rating. Well, for starters, the Association is built on trust and integrity. We’ve got to be able to trust that coaches won’t do that. Secondly, the ballots would be published in a public way so that there is accountability.

    [divider]

These probably aren’t the ultimate or only solutions to every issue related to the CHSAA RPI. But I believe they are good first steps, ones we can take to continue to improve the accuracy of the formula.

Ultimately, not everyone is going to be happy with the formula, especially if the end result is that they’re No. 33 out of a 32-team field. These changes should improve the performance of the rating system, and my hope is that committees consider them (along with other ideas) sooner rather than later.

  • Field hockey roundup: Palmer Ridge, Kent Denver advance to championship

DENVER — Palmer Ridge knocked a five-year monkey off its back on Tuesday.

The Bears, seeded second in the state field hockey tournament, beat No. 3 Colorado Academy 1-0 in the semifinals. It ended a string of five straight postseasons in which Colorado Academy had ended Palmer Ridge’s season.

“It’s huge,” said Palmer Ridge coach Paul Lewis. “Anybody wants to beat CA. That’s just a tough thing to do.”

The Mustangs had reached the past five state championship games, winning each of the last four.

“It is an end of a dynasty. They’ve been really dominant,” Lewis said. “They’ve got a great program. They always seem to have a tough team.”

Palmer Ridge sophomore Jordyn Ray-Isner broke a scoreless stalemate with her goal with 10:56 remaining in the game.

She had positioned herself next to the far post and was there with a waiting stick as a ball from junior Kyra Rothwell made its way through teammates and defenders in front of the net. Once it got to Ray-Isner, she tapped it in for a lead.

“I just knew I had to get a stick on it so we could get ahead in the game,” Ray-Isner said. “We really needed a goal to push us through. I just thought if I stuck my stick in there, I’d get a tap on the ball and I did.

“I didn’t even know if it went in or not because I couldn’t see. I was just hoping,” she added. “And then everyone started cheering, so I knew that it happened.”

It was the fourth time the two teams had faced one another in 2016. Palmer Ridge won a scrimmage before the season, then the Bears ended Colorado’s 78-game unbeaten streak in September. They also tied in October.

“CA has always had the mental game over everybody, and I think us having that few extra games on them put a little mental on them,” Lewis said.

Palmer Ridge came out firing with multiple chances in the first half, but Colorado Academy keeper Bridget Sutter, a senior, was equal to the task. She also had a number of big saves in the second half.

“Their keeper is a pretty solid keeper and she’s kept them in all four years,” Lewis said. “She’s really kept them alive. She’s very good.”

The Bears’ Keelin Broeker also had a big game in net, including a sprawling save on the turf with a minute remaining in the first half.

“Keelin is an absolute beast in front of the goal,” Lewis said. “She’s just got all the talent, she’s strong as heck and she loves the game. She’s a big part of our defense back there, and she’s doing amazing.”

Now, Palmer Ridge advances to the third championship game in program history, and the first since 2014. The Bears will face Kent Denver, which beat Palmer Ridge 2-0 a week ago.

“That’s another really tough one we haven’t been able to beat this year,” Lewis said. “It’s going to be a fight.”

Palmer Ridge has never won a state field hockey championship.

    (1) Kent Denver 2, (4) Denver East 0

Kent Denver’s unbeaten run will continue into the field hockey finals.

The top-seeded Sun Devils, now 15-0-2, advanced to Thursday’s championship game with a 2-0 win over No. 4 Denver East on Tuesday at All-City Stadium.

“It’s just exciting,” Kent Denver coach Kathy James said afterward. “This group has come together really well as a team. We’ve got great senior leadership.”

One of those seniors, forward Shelby Schumacher, scored a key goal early in the second half on a rocket from just inside the circle.

“I saw it coming across, and I was like, ‘I’ve got this, I’ve got this,’” Schumacher said of receiving a pass that led to the opportunity. “In my head, I was thinking, ‘Touch in the circle, and keep your head down.’”

Her shot found the far corner for a 1-0 lead with 20:36 remaining.

“Field hockey season is so fun for me, because I don’t play year-round like some of the other girls,” said Schumacher, who also plays soccer for Kent Denver. “So for me, I watch my teammates, and it’s like, ‘Wow, she hits the ball so well. I want to do that.’

“I just think about my teammates in those moments: ‘If she can do it, I can do this.’”

Denver East had an opportunity to tie the game four minutes after Schumacher’s goal, but Kent’s senior goalie Emilie-Ann Choi charged the ball on a breakaway to turn the chance away. She followed that with an immediate save off a penalty corner.

The Angels did appear to tie the game a few minutes after that, but the goal was disallowed because the ball never came outside the circle off a penalty corner.

Kent Denver sealed the game when sophomore Madeleine Hunt, the team’s leading scorer, poked a loose ball home in front of the net. It was her tenth goal this season.

This is the 13th time that Kent Denver will play in a championship game, which the most of any program in the sanctioned history of the sport, but it is the first appearance since 2011. The Sun Devils have won nine titles.

“We were really focused on today, and we knew this was going to be so far the hardest game of our run here in the state tournament,” Schumacher said after Kent’s game, which was the first semifinal of the night. “Whoever it is (in the final), it’s going to be an amazing game, and it’ll be fun to play.”
