COMMERCE CITY — Jefferson Academy’s Eric Strauss was terrific in regulation. But Kent Denver’s Ross Rainaldi was clutch in penalty kicks.
Which means Kent Denver is champion once again.
The Sun Devils (19-0-1 overall) battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to get the game into extra time. They got the game into penalty kicks where they edged Jefferson Academy 4-2 to claim the Class 3A boys soccer state title for the third consecutive season.
“We never worried about going down,” Rainaldi said. “We know we’re the better team. It’s just an incredible team to be a part of. We always keep each other up and I think we play better when we’re down a goal.”
So if that’s the case, Kent decided it need to play better about 12 minutes into the game. Brandon Leeper got the Jaguars (16-4) on the board, stunning the Sun Devils crowd. In the previous meeting between these two teams, Jefferson Academy was unable to find the net even once in the 1-0 loss.
But here they led.
Kent Denver finally found life in the 20th minute on a goal from David Felman. He sat in front of the net and it was Spencer Thomas who controlled the ball near the goal line and slipped it back to Fellman in the slot.
But the celebration was short-lived.
Only 43 seconds later, Leeper once again found himself in position and buried his shot to regain the lead for the Jaguars.
“I think we had the possession most of the game and we had most of the chances,” Fellman said. “They had some pretty incredible goals, but they weren’t getting all the chances. We were the team giving all the effort. We were the ones playing as hard as we could.”
But there was no questioning Strauss’ effort. For all the chances that Kent was getting, it was Strauss who kept swatting the ball away and keeping his team in the game.
“We said we had to be patient,” Kent Denver coach Arty Smith said. “We had our opportunities in the first half. We were confident that if we were patient and kept our composure, some of our opportunities would fall.”
It didn’t take long for him to be right. Rawson Welch found Fellman less than three minutes into the second half to pull even at 2-2.
Despite opportunities from both sides, neither team was able to break the tie and the game went into extra time.
And the story continued in the additional 30 minutes. Both sides had chances, but neither was able to totally capitalize on them.
Bringing home the state championship trophy was going to come down to who was better in penalty kicks, which was something Smith was not expecting.
“It wasn’t until the second overtime that I actually made my list of 11 guys who would shoot,” he said. “I didn’t think it would get there.”
Led by Fellman, the Sun Devils connected on their first three shots as Strauss was unable to bat any of them away.
But that wasn’t the case for Rainaldi. He made two big saves to put his team up 3-1.
Kile Kelly was able to get one by Rainaldi to close the gap to 3-2, but Mason Saeed put one final shot by Strauss and the Sun Devils turned to celebration mode.
“We didn’t want to go to PKs, to be honest,” Fellman said. “They’re a great, well-coached team, but PKs is a 50/50 chance. Everybody stepped up today.”
And the results showed that. For the juniors and seniors on the team, it was the third straight time they came away as champions. They have turn Kent Denver boys soccer into a dynasty.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE — Friday afternoon the playoff road starts for both the Ralston Valley Mustangs and the Cherry Creek Bruins.
The Bruins (7-3 overall) were awarded the No. 7 seed in the Class 5A tournament, while the Mustangs (6-4) come in as the No. 10 seed.
In the new waterfall alignment, the Cherry Creek Bruins were champions of the Mt. Elbert Conference, while Ralston Valley placed 2nd in the Mt. Wilson Conference which was headlined by the undefeated Eaglecrest Raptors.

In terms of schedule, Cherry Creek had a more difficult non-league but had easier league play, the Mustangs had a challenging non-league opponent in Pomona which they dropped 28-7 and faced the aforementioned Raptors.

Stanley has been a force on offense for the Bruins scoring 13 total touchdowns and having 1,103 all-purpose yards.
“I just looked help my team as much as I can every single game,” Stanley said. “I am humbled that my coaches and (teammates) trust me with the ball in my hands and I look to progress with my team and get better”
Also on the offensive side, after some early question marks, Trey Windham has stepped in and embraced his role as this teams quarterback.
“We are (all) confident in what he can do and the abilities that he has leading us into playoffs this week” Stanley said about his quarterback.
The Bruins and Mustangs face off at 4 o’clock MST. This game will be broadcasted live on the NFHS Network.

AURORA — All the two-time defending Class 5A boys soccer state champions needed was a minute of offensive power to upset the tournament’s No. 1-seeded team.
Broomfield senior forward Jeff Robisch scored the game-winning goal for the No. 4-seeded Eagles as they took down No. 1-seeded Denver East 2-1 in the 5A boys soccer state tournament semifinals Wednesday night at Legacy Stadium.
The Eagles, 16-2-1, handed the Angels, 18-1, their first loss of the season to advance back to the title game.
Denver East junior forward Sam Carson scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute to give the Angels an early 1-0 first-half lead. It was Carson’s 19th goal of the season.

But Broomfield’s transitory offensive spurt was led by junior forward Michael Mooney’s 52nd minute equalizer goal to knot the game at 1; and then Robisch’s long goal — a 53rd-minute dagger — ultimately sealed the Eagles’ fate back in the final.
“It was a crazy game and we knew they were going to be good going in, I mean, they were undefeated,” Robisch said. “We knew we needed to come out with our best to win it.”
Broomfield and coach Jim Davidson head into a Front Range League matchup against Boulder in the 5A boys championship at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday.
“The only thing motivating us is to get where we are on Saturday and win a third state championship game,” Robisch said.
The Eagles have the most state titles in the state with six.

Another undefeated squad was also on the schedule in the 5A boys soccer semifinals double-headers on Wednesday night at Legacy Stadium.
No. 2-seeded Boulder improved to 19-0 on the year with a 3-1 win over No. 30-seeded Fossil Ridge, setting up a rematch of the 2014 state championship with two-time defending state champ Broomfield.
Panthers sophomore midfielder Omar Castruita was the nail in the Sabercats’ coffin, scoring two goals in the second half — the first in the 67th minute and the second in the 73rd minute off a feed from senior forward Trey Pace. The goals were Castruita’s fifth and sixth of the year.
“I’ve been struggling scoring lately,” Castruita said. “I scored last game but other than that I’ve been struggling, but tonight was the night and I scored two good goals for my team.”
Senior forward Simon Julien put the Panthers up 1-0 right before halftime, slotting the ball in the right corner of the net in the 39th minute.
But Fossil Ridge was able to get on the board to tie the game 1-1 in the second half off a Cameron Viola header goal — his first goal of the season — on a corner kick from Martinez.
“We were talking about it during halftime that they would come out with everything,” Castruita said.
Sophomore goalkeeper Djibril Doumbia was making great saves for Boulder, including a very impressive save on a Fossil penalty kick by Grant Martinez PK three minutes into the second half.
Fossil Ridge and coach Zach Speed capped the season 8-10.
Coach Hardy Kalisher and the Panthers will take on two-time defending state champ Broomfield in a 5A rematch from 2014, which the Eagles won 2-0.
“My brother, Brian, played in the final that year,” Castruita said. “We played Broomfield early on in the season and we won. But we wanted to play them and they wanted to play us, and we’ll see them Saturday.”
Boulder has one boys soccer state title from 2012.
