  • Baseball rankings: Cherry Creek, Valor Christian move up to No. 1 spots

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Cherry Creek and Valor Christian are picking the right time to peak. After all, in hunt for a state baseball championship teams put more emphasis on how they’re playing in May, not in March.

In the last week of April, the Bruins and the Eagles have made their way into their respective top spots in the CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

Cherry Creek takes nine of 12 first-place votes to come in as the new No. 1 in the Class 5A poll. The Bruins unseat Rock Canyon, which falls to No.2 after a 12-10 loss to Regis Jesuit last week.

The Raiders are just one of three new teams to crack the 5A top 10. Douglas County enters the poll this week at No. 7 and Broomfield, fresh off a shutout win over Mountain Range comes in at No. 9.

Valor Christian — the defending 4A champion — regains the top spot in that class, jumping up three spots from last week’s ranking.

The Eagles overtake No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain, which claimed the top spot a week ago.

Still undefeated, Denver North climbs a couple of spots to take the No. 4 position this week, grabbing a couple of first-place votes in the process.

Summit and Pueblo West are the two newcomers in the 4A poll, taking the No. 9 and No. 10 spots respectively.

Lamar remains the No. 1 team in the 3A rankings, but University was able to jump a spot to land at No. 2.

Peak to Peak (No. 5) and Colorado Academy (No. 6) each climbed two spots from last week’s poll.

There were no new teams in the 3A poll.

Paonia held its spot at the top of the 2A poll. Sedgwick County jumped a spot to No. 4 and County Line fell a spot to No. 5, but no other changes occurred in the 2A rankings.

Holly did not play a game last week and it didn’t effect anything in the least as the Wildcats are still No.1 in the rankings.

Fleming (No. 2) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 4) each jumped a spot from last week. Three new teams joined the 1A poll as Denver Jewish Day comes in at No. 6, Stratton/Liberty takes the No. 9 spot and Sierra Grande rounds out the poll at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

New polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Girls lacrosse rankings: ThunderRidge, Centaurus join poll

    (Michael Hankins/TGWstudios.com)

ThunderRidge girls lacrosse is ranked again for the first time since the March 27 rankings came out.

After dropping out of the poll last week, Centaurus is back in at No. 10.

The top five teams remained the same, with Columbine gaining some ground on Cherry Creek after the Bruins dropped two games last week.

However, Cherry Creek’s losses were a double-overtime loss to St. Ignatius (San Francisco, CA) and to Loyola Academy, the No. 1 team in Illinois.

Colorado Academy dispatched the same St. Ignatius team that took down the Bruins, but was unable to defeat Loyola Academy. The Mustangs stayed at No. 1.

Palmer Ridge made a jump from No. 8 to No. 6, and Dakota Ridge followed suit into the No. 7 spot after Arapahoe and Regis Jesuit dropped from the rankings.

Kent Denver received two first-place votes, yet stayed at No. 5.

Chaparral dropped to the No. 8 spot after a 2-1 week.

  • Boys lacrosse rankings: Mountain Vista up to No. 2 in 5A

    (Matt Daniels/MattDanPhoto.com)

Mountain Vista may have just leapt over a huge mental hurdle. A win last week over Regis Jesuit helped the Golden Eagles take over the No. 2 spot in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com boys lacrosse rankings.

Cherry Creek remains the No. 1 team in the poll, but a Mountain Vista win over Highlands this week could set up a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown next week.

Beyond the shift in the No. 2 position, very few notable changes occurred in this week’s rankings.

Kent Denver jumped a spot to No. 5 and Wheat Ridge also jumped a spot to land at No. 7.

No new teams broke into the poll.

Dawson held onto its top spot in the 4A rankings. Defending champion Valor Christian remains right behind the Mustangs at No. 2.

Aspen jumped two spots to take over at No. 8.

Like the 5A rankings, no new teams joined the 4A top 10.

After falling out of the top spot last week, Jefferson Academy is once again standing tall in the Class 3A girls soccer rankings.

The Jaguars regain the No. 1 after grabbing wins over SkyView Academy and St. Mary’s Academy last week.

Colorado Academy falls just one spot to No. 2.

Manitou Springs has continued its steady climb, gaining one spot to take position at No. 4.

At No. 10, Denver Science & Tech: Stapleton is the only new team in the 3A poll.

The 2A poll also saw a change at the top spot. After beating Dawson 5-0, Denver Christian comes in as the new No. 1 team. The Mustangs fell a spot to No. 2.

Front Range Christian is the only new team in the 2A poll, coming in at No. 5.

ThunderRidge climbed two spots to take the No. 8 spot this week, just ahead of the two newcomers to the poll.

Denver South takes the No. 9 spot while Rocky Mountain rounds out the poll at No. 10.

Valor Christian remains undefeated, meaning they still hold the top position in the 4A rankings.

The Classical Academy (No. 2) and Lewis-Palmer (No. 3) also held their spots from last week.

  • Denver South names Ryan Marini its new football coach

Ryan Marini addresses South’s Futures team on Saturday. (Courtesy of Denver South HS)

When Denver South athletic director Adam Kelsey announced to the school’s football players who their next coach would be, the reaction couldn’t have been any better.

“They went berserk,” Kelsey said. “They went absolutely nuts.”

That coach? Ryan Marini, who had been an assistant on Tony Lindsay’s staff for the past two years, including time as a lower-level head coach. He’s been a teacher at South for the past five years.

“He has a pretty extensive background,” Kelsey said.

Included are stops at Littleton, Heritage, and Cherry Creek, as well as a basketball assistant under Vince Valdez when Lincoln basketball won its two state titles, and at Mullen.

“He’s really learned from a lot of the best in the business,” Kelsey said. “He’s been in three state championships as an assistant coach.”

Marini graduated from and played football at Heritage. He went on to play at Wartburg College in Iowa.

“I’ve coached all over the place, but my heart’s always been in Denver Public Schools,” Marini said. “I love DPS kids, I love the district. I’ve always wanted an opportunity to see if I could be a head coach, but I really wanted the opportunity to do it in Denver Public Schools. So the fact that the two came together was just perfect.”

Of Denver South, he added: “I love South kids. It’s one of the best schools in the state, in my opinion, so I’m super excited that I get to lead their football program.”

Marini coached South’s DPS Futures team to the championship on Saturday. When Kelsey told those kids, “They chased him down the field and tackled him and pig-piled him. They just love him.”

Marini will succeed Tony Lindsay Jr. as South’s football coach. Lindsay’s teams were 78-33 in his 10 seasons, including an appearance in the 2012 Class 4A state championship game. Lindsay accepted the job at Far Northeast in early March.

Once the job was open, Kelsey hit the ground running.

“We had an extensive process,” he said. “We had a lot of people apply for the job.”

    (Courtesy of Denver South HS)

But it was Marini who stood out.

“When it came down to it,” Kelsey said, “the committee was just like, ‘This guy’s the right guy for the job.’

“The more I thought about it, I mean, I had to get my first chance to coach, which was at South,” Kelsey added later. “Tony Lindsay’s first chance to be a head coach was at South. (Boys basketball coach) Malik Fletcher’s first chance to be a head coach was at South. At some point, it’s somebody’s first opportunity. You’ve got to have a chance.”

Denver South won’t be a rebuilding job under Marini, with talent throughout each level.

“I told Tony, ‘It’s not like you left me the keys to a Honda Civic; you left me the keys to a Mustang,’” Marini said.

Added Kelsey: “It’s built already to win, we’ve got a ton of talent. He just has to take the reins.”

Marini is a social studies teacher at the school, and one Kelsey sees as someone who “represents all that is right about education-based athletics.” Marini was Mile High teacher of the year in 2008, and was named University of Chicago outstanding educator in 2015. He has been teaching in DPS for 15 years.

“We’re excited about it, especially because it’s someone who’s kind of homegrown here,” Kelsey said. “He’s invested in South as an educator and coach and I’m pretty excited about it.”

  • Puccio coming home to lead Green Mountain boys hoops program

LAKEWOOD — Green Mountain High School has a new boys basketball coach, but he is a very familiar face to the Rams’ community.

Mike Puccio, a 2000 graduate of Green Mountain, helped the Rams advance to the Class 5A state quarterfinals his senior year before losing to eventual state champion Palmer.

Green Mountain’s new boys basketball coach Mike Puccio. (photo provided)

“I’m looking forward to coming home where it all started for me over 20 years ago and being apart of the GM family again,” said Puccio, who was the boys varsity head basketball coach for Standley Lake in Westminster for nine years.

Puccio takes over for Derek Van Tassel, who has coached Green Mountain’s boys basketball, along with the Rams’ boys and girls golf programs for nearly a decade. Van Tassel stepped down from coaching basketball to spend more time with his family, including watching his daughter Kelli play for Colorado Mesa University’s women’s basketball team.

“We are excited that Coach Puccio is coming back home to GM,” Green Mountain Principal Colleen Owens said. “The Green Mountain Community is a special place. As a GM Alum, I know the pull on the heart strings that many of us who return to our alma mater feel. GMHS is a hub of the community and we are proud of our schools.”

Green Mountain had a 10-14 record last season. The Rams did qualify for the 4A state playoffs, losing to Falcon in the opening round. Green Mountain was a senior-laded squad, so Puccio will have his work cutout for him with the Rams playing in the tough 4A Jeffco League that features defending 4A state champion Valor Christian, along Golden, D’Evelyn and Evergreen that all made at least the state quarterfinals.

Puccio played at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling and finished his playing career in 2005 playing at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

He started his coaching career in 2002 for the Colorado Chaos club basketball program. Puccio also served as an assistant coach under John Anderson at Golden High School and was the junior varsity coach at Green Mountain during the 2006-07 season when Rudy Martin was the varsity coach at Green Mountain.

Puccio spent one year as an assistant coach for Standley Lake’s boys basketball program before taking over the head varsity job during the 2008-09 season.

“The Green Mountain Athletic Department is very proud to have such a quality person and coach on our coaching staff,” Green Mountain Athletic Director Tommy Dodge said. “We support the message of education-based athletics here at GM and Mike shares the same mission as us.
