    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

It might be too early to say that Cheyenne Mountain is back at a championship level, but a 11-0 start to the season has certainly gotten the attention of voters across the state.

Fresh off a win over Falcon on Thursday and Canon City on Saturday, the Indians are the new No. 1 in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

The Indians only broke into the poll a week ago and after leaping over Northridge, Windsor and Ponderosa, they are looking closer and closer to being in championship contention once again.

Valor Christian made a decent jump this week, gaining three spots to land No. 4.

Silver Creek is the only team to join the poll, coming in at No. 9

    Lamar St. Mary's baseball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Lamar regains the top spot in the 3A poll after being overtaken by league rival La Junta last week.

University gains some ground to come in at No. 3 as does Manitou Springs who jumps a spot to land at No. 5.

Eaton rejoins the top 10 this week, rounding out the 3A at No. 10.

In 5A, Rock Canyon holds on to the top spot in the poll. Mountain Range, however, made a four-spot jump to come in at No. 2.

Cherry Creek gets back into the top three, getting a few first-place votes in the process.

Fruita Monument (No. 8) and Legacy (No. 9) are the two newcomers to the 5A rankings.

Paonia held on to the top spot in the 2A poll, as did the top four overall teams from last week’s rankings.

Rocky Ford is two spots better this week at No. 7.

Lyons is the only new team in the 2A poll, coming at No. 9 this week.

Holly also held on to its No. 1 ranking, hanging on to the top spot in the 1A poll. Eads (No. 2) and Fleming (No. 3) also held on to their positions from a week ago.

At No. 8, Kiowa is new to this week’s top 10, as is Granada who rounds out the poll at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

There are three new teams atop the CHSAANow.com girls rankings.

The Mustangs edged former No. 1 Jefferson Academy last week before battling to a tie with Kent Denver.

The Jaguars come in at No. 2 this week and the Sun Devils dropped one spot to No. 4.

Manitou Springs jumped one spot thanks to a 1-0 win over No. 6 Colorado Springs Christian School.

At No. 8, Liberty Common is the only new team in the 3A rankings.

Grandview rejoins the poll at No. 9 and ThunderRidge is also a newcomer this week, coming in at N0. 10.

In 4A, Valor Christian regains the top spot after The Classical Academy held it a week ago.

Defending champion Lewis-Palmer is still at No. 3 and the general layout of the next five teams are fairly consistent from last week’s poll.

Air Academy (No. 9) and Evergreen (No. 10) are the two new teams to the 4A rankings.

Dawson is the only team to hold on to its No. 1 rankings as it sits firmly atop the 2A poll. Heritage Christian (No. 3) and Fountain Valley (No. 4) traded spots from a week, but the rest of the 2A rankings remained intact.

  • Cherry Creek girls tennis triumphs at Cherry Creek Invitational

    Cherry Creek girls tennis
    (Max Potter/Cherry Creek High School)

GREENWOOD VILLAGE — The Cherry Creek girls tennis team hosted the Cherry Creek Invitational this weekend where they defended their home court and won the tournament.

No Bruin finished below third and Sayuri Garud(No. 2 singles) and the team of Grace Shepard and Kaki Cantor(No. 4 doubles) each won the championship in their respective draws.

Cherry Creek finished first as a team with 33 points, Cheyenne Mountain was the runner-up with 25 points and Denver East placed third with 22 points.

“Winning the tournament as a team was huge for us and a really solid start to our season,” Bruin No. 1 singles player Micha Handler said. “The teams we played we will be seeing again at regionals and state so I think it felt really good to win. We know what we have to work on (to go) for that state title.”

Josie Schaffer of Kent Denver won the No. 1 singles bracket. Rosie Clark of Kent Denver too the win in No. 3 singles. Casey Ahrendsen and Ally Arenson of Cheyenne Mountain won No. 1 doubles. Amiga Pandey and Savanah Smith of Fossil Ridge won No. 2 doubles.

“At this point in the season, every (match) is tough, regardless of winning or losing, I feel that there are always things the team can improve on,” Handler said. “In the next couple weeks, training mentally and on the courts is what we’re going to do to get ready for the state tournament.”

The Bruins were just barely beaten out last season by Fairview for the team state title,

“I think all of us on the team are working really hard and wanting a state championship this more than ever,” Handler said. “After winning 18 years in a row, and getting second place to Fairview, everyone this year is pushing a little harder and fighting a little longer in hopes of achieving (a state title).”

Cherry Creek and Kent Denver will see each other again this week as the Bruins travel to Cherry Hills Village to face the 4A Sun Devils in a highly competitive dual.

Fruita Monument athletic director Denny Squibb announced on Monday that Ryan Hayden has been hired as the new boys basketball coach.

Hayden comes over from Grand Junction Central where he has been the boys basketball coach for the last six seasons.

Prior to his time as the head coach of the Warriors, he spent time as an assistant at Palisade where he attended high school.

“Fruita Monument is excited that Coach Hayden has accepted this coaching position,” Squibb said in a statement. “We feel he is one of the top coaches on the Western Slope.”

It was announced in late March that coach Billy Dreher would not return to the Wildcats, leaving the coaching job open for any and all takers.

The Wildcats finished 10-14 during the 2016-17 season. They advanced to the Class 5A state tournament where they lost to Ralston Valley in the first round.
