Football roundup: Ralston Valley knocks off 4A No. 1 Pine Creek

(NFHS Network)

Ralston Valley football picked up a huge win on Friday night, knocking off top-ranked Pine Creek and ending the Eagles’ state-best 15-game winning streak.

The Mustangs grabbed a 17-7 lead at halftime thanks to a field goal as time expired. They then held on in the second half, including one last stop with a minute left to seal the win.

Ralston Valley, a Class 5A program, is now 2-3 this season following an 0-3 start. Pine Creek, which plays in 4A, drops to 4-1.

Both teams begin conference play next week.

Blake Stenstrom threw two touchdown passes, Joshia Davis rushed for 118 and a score and caught a TD pass, and the Eagles got yet another big win in their non-conference slate.

Valor Christian is now 5-0.

“We feel like playing great teams helps us refine what we need to do,” Valor Christian coach Rod Sherman told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “We’re not scared to lose. This is the first time in five, six, seven years that we’ve actually been undefeated out of our non-conference. If you’re not scared to lose, then these games are really good, because it helps you grow.”

Sherman pointed to his team’s ability to run the football, and stop Cherry Creek from doing the same, as one of the differences in the game.

“With a team like Creek, they’re so talented and they do such a great job coaching, if you let them be balanced, you’re in trouble,” he said. “And ultimately we ran the ball really well and we stopped the run.”

1A: Aspen 34, Coal Ridge 28

Aspen entered 4-0, and Coal Ridge was 3-1, so their matchup on Friday was a good one. Ultimately, the Skiers won 34-28 to improved to 5-0.

Aspen won just two games last season, and hadn’t won five games in a season since 2013. It’s Aspen’s best start since opening 7-0 in 2010.

“We challenged (the kids) to understand what it takes to be successful,” Aspen coach Karson Pike told the Scoreboard Show about the team’s turnaround. “They did a good job this summer and this spring. … That’s really where we grew up.”

2A: (5) La Junta 21, (3) The Classical Academy 11

The Tigers picked up a big top-five win a week after dropping another top-five matchup.

“It was a big win for us to get back on the winning track,” La Junta coach Clint Buderus told the Scoreboard Show. “The kids played good. It was huge for us.”

La Junta, the defending 2A champion, had its 16-game winning streak snapped last Saturday in a loss to now No. 1 Kent Denver. So this win was a big bounce-back following that game.

“We played better tonight,” Buderus said.

1A: (1) Bennett 76, (10) Clear Creek 36

The top-ranked Tigers handed Clear Creek its first loss this season.

Bennett rushed for more than 600 yards in the game, including 515 in the first half.

Bennett, which reached the semifinals last season, is now 5-0 this season. Clear Creek is 4-1.

8-man (3) Haxtun 29, (8) Dayspring Christian 21

A fourth-quarter touchdown lifted Haxtun to the win and a 5-0 start this season.

The team teams were knotted at 21 going into the final frame, and at 6-6 at halftime, before Haxtun pulled away.

Dayspring Christian is now 3-2.

No. 5 Erie football escapes No. 6 Silver Creek in big 3A matchup

ERIE — On fourth down and 10, Erie’s Noah Roper motioned left out of the backfield and found himself facing one-on-one coverage on the outside.

“What’s going through my mind?,” Roper asked. “Better not drop this. I beat him, I got to the outside, and I couldn’t ask for a better ball from my quarterback.”

Quarterback Jacob Mansdorfer, in his second week playing quarterback, connected with Roper on a deep ball in the endzone to give No. 5 Erie a 12-10 lead against No. 6 Silver Creek. The Tigers rode the momentum to win Friday by a score of 18-10.

“Put the ball in the hands of the best player that you have,” Erie coach Chad Cooper said. “I did not want to go down without doing that.”

Silver Creek knew it had to contain Roper, who came into the game with 863 rushing yards.

The defense did it’s job through one and a half quarters. Then, Roper busted open a 35-yard run, breaking five tackels on the play to give Erie its first first down with five minutes left in the half.

Roper capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run up the gut. Roper was stopped in the backfield on the 2-point conversion attempt.

“This game is going to get the wheels going,” Roper said. “This game proves to everyone that Erie is great. We’ve been trying to be something great for a long time, and now we’re going to keep it going.”

Facing a third and goal from the 28, Andreik Knechtel took a screen pass for the touchdown to give No. 6 Silver Creek a 10-6 lead against No. 5 Erie just before halftime.

Silver Creek got on the board after taking advantage of a turnover on special teams. Roper fumbled on the punt return, giving the Raptors the ball on the 31.

Coltan Grabau put a 26-yard field goal through the uprights to put Silver Creek on the board first with a 3-0 lead.

“After that punt, nobody on my team was mad at me,” Roper said. “They all gave me positive thoughts. I told my self, you know what, go have a hell of a game and make up for this fumble. That’s exactly what I did with the help of my teammates.”

Facing a third and four from the 26, Silver Creek lofted a pass on a wheel route, but Roper came in and knocked ball out of Brandin Graves’ hands with a huge hit.

The Raptors faked the punt on the ensuing play, but the pass was incomplete and Erie took over with 6:24 in the final quarter.

Erie tried to put the game on ice with a fourth down and inches from the five, but was unable to convert, giving Silver Creek the ball with three minutes to go.

The Tiger defense came up huge on the next drive, forcing a turnover on downs to escape Silver Creek.

“Everyone thinks that we’re nothing and our schedule is easy,” Roper said. “They think the only reason we’re a good team is because our schedule is easy. This game proves them wrong.”

Roper ran it in on the next play to officially put the game out of reach as Erie rode an 18-10 victory to a 5-0 start.

“It’s a step in the right direction for our program,” Coooper said. “It’s a great win, especially defensively. The defense came out, had a great gameplan, and executed it really well to hold an explosive team to 10 points.”

No. 9 Harrison proving to be the real deal after win over Woodland Park

Woodland Park Harrison football

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

WOODLAND PARK — The dense fog couldn’t stop a clear picture from emerging on Friday night. Harrison football might be the real deal.

A 58-7 win over Woodland Park improved Harrison to 5-0 on the season, the program’s best start in recent memory. As of Friday, the Panthers sat at No. 3 in the football RPI.

With nearly 200 passing yards per game and over 200 rushing yards per game, the offense is well-oiled. The defense proved to be opportunistic in the win over Woodland Park (2-3 overall).

Halfway through the season, the only question that might be lingering in regard to these Panthers is what are they capable of when looking at the big picture?

“That’s a good question,” Harrison coach Al Melo said. “I was happy with the way we ran the ball. We ran the ball pretty solid the whole game and when we have to throw it, we can.”

Leading the way for Harrison’s ground attack was Aumiere Sedrick. He went for over 200 yards and three touchdowns. That included runs of 53, 40 and 39 yards.

Listed at 215 pounds, the featured back is a major cog for a team that is looking at jumping up the Class 3A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

“I do this, not just for myself, but for the people on our team that aren’t able to do it,” Shedrick said. “I just take that to heart.”

The one thing Harrison was not on Friday was one dimensional. Quarterback Orlando Westbrook made the offense multi-dimensional and threw touchdown passes of 11 and 61 yards to wide receiver David Barrow.

Barrow also included a pick-six with 6:51 left in the third quarter.

Long runs and flashy plays might help a few individual names stand out for Harrison, but the overall roster is unified in its goals and doesn’t let one accomplishment overshadow another.

“We play as one,” Barrow said. “My catches don’t mean anything. Everything we do, we do as a team.”

Harrison held a 20-0 lead early in the game before Woodland Park struck and scored its only touchdown of the game. Logan Taylor broke free on a 15-yard run to get into the end zone, keeping his Panthers with ear shot.

But things unraveled in the second half. Harrison intercepted passes on four-straight possessions to seal the game.

It didn’t help that three of Woodland Park’s captains were injured through the course of the game, but coach Joe Roskam knew there were many factors that led to Harrison running away with the game.

“Turnovers for sure,” he said. “It’s not like our kids didn’t play hard. They made some plays in the first half and it just ended up being ugly.”

Woodland Park begins league play next week when it travels to Discovery Canyon.

Harrison will look to make it six-straight wins to start the season when it hosts rival Sierra. And if Friday night was any indication, Harrison will continue to flex its muscles as a 3A contender.

“We never let up at all,” Barrows said. “We always have a foot on the gas.”

Arvada West football hands Standley Lake its first loss

ARVADA — It took a matter of 46 seconds off the clock Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex to changed the mood of Arvada West’s large football homecoming crowd.

The Wildcats were locked up with Standley Lake in a 7-7 deadlock through the first half. Things changed quick in the second half when A-West sophomore Isaiah Ocana returned a punt 75 yards for the touchdown with 9:24 left in the third quarter.

“At halftime we went into the locker room locked in and buckled up,” A-West senior defensive lineman and fullback Anthony Gallardo said after the Wildcats sent their homecoming crowd home happy with a 28-14 victory.

Two plays after Ocana’s punt return, Standley Lake fumbled on its own 18-yard line. A-West junior quarterback Johnny Krutsch didn’t waste any time capitalizing. Krutsch hit junior Cory Carignan on the next play for an 18-yard touchdown at the 8:38 mark in the third quarter to push the Wildcats’ lead to 21-7.

“It was that first six minutes of the third quarter — punt return, fumble — that third quarter killed us,” Standley Lake coach Don Morse said after the Gators’ first loss of the season. “I was pleased with the way our guys competed.”

Standley Lake (4-1 record) was shorthanded with leading rusher — senior Ty Webber — out of the line-up against the 5A team from A-West. Morse said Webber, who had 525 yards rushing in the Gators’ first four games, got injured during practice this week, but should return to the field soon.

Gators’ quarterback Alex France had a solid night with a 9-yard touchdown run and finished the game with a 71-yard touchdown pass to junior Tyler Williams against A-West’s back-ups in the final minutes.

“I consider A-West would be a top-5 team in 4A. They have that kind of talent and ability,” Morse said. “It was good for us to see that is the type of team we’ll have to play at our level. You can’t make mistakes against good teams.”

Standley Lake heads into conference play next week. The Gators open up against Thornton at 7 p.m. Friday night at Five Star Stadium. Fruita Monument (5-0) looks to be the team to beat in the 4A Mountain League. Standley Lake will get the Fruita at the NAAC on Oct. 20.

A-West (4-1) has won four straight after losing on a last-second pick-6 against Lakewood to open the season. The Wildcats have been able to put that tough loss behind them.

“It’s just snowballing,” A-West senior defensive lineman Jack Boyer said of the Wildcats’ momentum. “We are getting better and better. We are improving every week.”

Junior running back and safety Tony Cass carried a heavy load early against Standley Lake. Cass had 14 carries for 85 yards in the first quarter. His 15th carry came on the first play in the second quarter and resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run.

“They wanted to run the ball early because it was raining out,” said Cass, who had nine straight carries on the Wildcats’ 57-yard scoring drive. “I was getting tired. I just had to keep pushing.”

Cass finished with 21 carries for 116 yards and also had a 30-yard reception.

Gallardo had an impressive game on both sides of the ball. He had a sack and scored A-West’s final touchdown on a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“They just gave me the ball and I put my head down. I saw a gap and took it,” Gallardo said.

A-West opens its conference play in the 5A Mt. Wilson League against Rangeview (1-4). The Wildcats travel to Aurora Public School Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday, Oct. 6.

A-West coach Brad Pyatt’s club had a 2-3 record in the league last season. The focus this season is to make a run as a legitimate contender to challenge the likes of No. 2 ranked Eaglecrest (5-0) and rival Ralston Valley in the conference.

“We just keep the same mindset that nobody is better than us,” Gallardo said. “We go out there and play ball, buckle up and get ready for the ride.”

No. 4 Fossil Ridge softball erases early deficit to beat No. 5 Legacy

(Cannon Casey/CHSAANow.com)

BROOMFIELD — No. 4 Fossil Ridge weathered the storm from No. 5 Legacy in an 8-4 win on Saturday.

“It’s going to be seven innings,” Fossil Ridge coach Dave Philop said after the game. “If we get up early, it’s not over. If we get behind early, it’s not over. We’ve had comebacks over the years, and this group has been involved in those. We told them to stick with it and play seven innings, because this game is not going to be easy.

“They’re not going to give up, but neither are we.”

Mia Moddelmog and Jordan Ellis provided the offense as Fossil Ridge scored eight unanswered runs against the Lightning.

Moddelmog went four-for-four with three RBIs.

“That’s a kid that’s been in the program,” Philop said on Moddelmog, who has started since her freshman year. “She’s the one we count on in that four hole. She’s been there, and she’s been in those tough situations.”

After the Lightning loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning, Trisha Cook delivered a bases clearing double. Ciarra Nelson drove Cook in with a single to right the next at-bat, and Fossil Ridge trailed 4-0 before recording a single out.

“We were in big trouble,” Philop said. “The only thing we talked about before the game was that we’re at there place. Since I’ve been here, we’ve wanted to be like Legacy. They’re going to get after us right away on their field, so we have to weather the storm.”

Moddelmog doubled off the left field wall to get Fossil Ridge going in the second inning, but the Sabercats were only able to push one run across on an Ellis bloop single down the first base line.

Fossil Ridge kept pushing, and it paid off. The Sabercats loaded the bases with no outs in the third, and got five runs across in the inning.

“We feel like if we can be playing well at the end of the year, then who knows,” Philop said. “You just have to go in and hope. It’s a battle every time. It’s never a given.”

Moddelmog’s single scored two, Ellis helped herself with a sac fly and Legacy walked in two runs.

“You have to pull through for your team,” Moddelmog said. “It’s a team game, and everybody plays together. You have to do your part. We all rallied the bats. We went out there, had fun and let loose, and did what we do.”

Moddelmog gave Fossil Ridge an insurance run in the fourth with a single down the first base line, then Kristen Reed tacked on another with a solo homerun in the sixth.

“I think we all came together and realized that we can go out and beat anybody in the state,” Moddelmog said. “Play the best game we can play. We knew we had to play clean defense and had to get it done at the plate.”

Ellis pitched a complete game in addition to her two runs-batted-in.

“It’s just huge,” Philop said. “At this time of the year, it’s even bigger because it gets you ready for regionals and state. This atmosphere was playoff atmosphere, and I felt like our kids responded really well.”

No. 6 Golden softball slams home another 4A Jeffco win

GOLDEN — In a softball game featuring 17 runs and 27 hits, it actually came down to pitching Saturday afternoon at Golden High School.

Golden junior pitcher Cassidy Paulson retired 10 of 11 final D’Evelyn batters she faced to help the Demons, ranked No. 6 in the current CHSAANow.com Class 4A softball poll, to a 9-8 victory over their 4A Jeffco rival.

“Cass has matured mentally over her tenure here at the school. She has the idea that she is never out of it,” Golden coach Chad Herbers said. “She continues to throw strikes and knows we are going to respond with some runs at some point. Everyone feels that same way.”

Golden’s Jade Gomez-Chavarria, left, forces out D’Evelyn’s Bailey Marvel at second base. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

D’Evelyn junior Bella Porreco led the Jaguars to back-to-back 3-run innings in the top of the third and fourth to give D’Evelyn a 8-7 lead. Golden had actually jumped out to a 7-2 lead with a 7-run top of the second inning.

Porreco, daughter of head coach Dan Porreco, belted a 3-run home run in the third inning and blooped in a 3-run double in the fourth inning to give the Jaguars the lead.

“I have to give our girls a lot of credit after that 7-run inning. They showed a lot of character,” Coach Porreco said. “Golden has a great team. It was a great game. Anyone could have won that game.”

Golden regained the lead with a 2-run bottom of the fourth inning with a lead-off single by senior Megan Feiner, followed up by an RBI triple by senior Mickayla Zamora. A ground out by senior Madison Campbell allowed Zamora to score to give the Demons a 9-8 lead through four innings.

Surprisingly, it would be the final run of the game as Paulson and D’Evelyn sophomore Rylee Waggoner, who came in to pitch for the Jaguars in the second inning, settled in.

“I realized my fast curve and screwball were kind of getting hit pretty hard,” Paulson said. “My off-speed was the savor today.”

D’Evelyn could muster just one base runner in the final three innings. Freshman Kylee Ornstein singled with two outs in the top of the seventh, but she was forced out at second base to end the game.

Golden, who moved into the state rankings just last week, used its monster bottom of the second inning to win its third straight conference game. Sophomore Makenzie Middleton had the big hit with a grand slam off D’Evelyn starting pitcher Jamie Lefevre.

“Right now, either one of the twins (Makenzie and Makayla Middleton) coming up to bat with any base runners on base is a win,” Herbers said. “I’ll take those chances any day.”

The home run was Makenzie’s 11th of the season for the Demons (13-3, 3-1 in league). The Middleton twins have combined for 47 RBIs and 56 hits this season.

“I can’t get a grand slam without my teammates,” Makenzie said.

Golden is in good position to place second in 4A Jeffco behind three-time defending state champion Valor Christian (16-0, 4-0) and grab an automatic bid for the postseason.

The Demons are scheduled to finish of their regular season with league games next week against Evergreen (Wednesday) and Standley Lake (Thursday) before a non-league game against Heritage (Friday).

“We hope to get those wins,” Makenzie said going into the Demons’ final three regular-season games. “We work as a team. We are pretty good.”

D’Evelyn (11-5, 3-1) as a pair of tough conference games left against Valor (Monday) and rival Wheat Ridge (Wednesday). Coach Porreco likes finishing the regular season with some good competition to get ready for the playoffs.

“We obviously know they are a great team. They are the three-time defending state champion,” Coach Porreco said of playing Valor. “We’ll give them our best on Monday.”
