No. 3 Brush softball beats No. 7 University

In a rematch of an extra-inning Brush win last Thursday, the Beetdiggers took care of University in easier fashion.

CHSAA has designated the Week of Oct. 9 as “Officials Appreciation Week.”

We are asking our member schools, teams and school communities to let CHSAA officials know how much their time, dedication and commitment means to high school activities.

“Without them, it would just be recess,” said CHSAA commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green.

A signed card from the team, an additional pregame “shout-out,” a gift card or basket — there are so many ways our schools can acknowledge the importance of officials to ensuring our athletes compete in a safe and equitable environment.

Currently, there are 4,686 officials serving the CHSAA membership.

“Without officials we have no games,” said CHSAA associate commissioner Tom Robinson, who oversees officials. “The partnership we have with officials is an integral component of the CHSAA.”

  • No. 9 Fossil Ridge volleyball rallies to beat No. 6 Fort Collins

No. 6 Fort Collins volleyball had its nine-game winning streak snapped by No. 9 Fossil Ridge on Thursday.

The Lambkins had not lost since the beginning of September.

After a loss in the first set, Fossil Ridge won three straight to beat Fort Collins in four sets.

“It was really big being that they’re a cross-town rival, and we sometimes fight for kids between the two schools,” Fossil Ridge coach Paul Shimek said. “We lost the game to Rocky Mountain, which was disappointing because we didn’t show up very well that day. We really wanted to come back and show that we belonged.”

    The Sabercats won 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-17.

Riley Zuhn and Catie Semadeni led Fossil Ridge with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Charlie Durbin also had 29 digs.

The win puts Fossil Ridge at 7-1 in a crowded Class 5A Front Range League, good for a temporary hold on first place.

“We’re hoping that it’s a catalyst. That this is a starting spot. We’re starting to get people back regular,” Shimek said. “Riley is finally starting to get back healthy again, and Mataya’s (Megson) arm is coming back a little bit. We’re starting to put everything together now, so hopefully this is a starting point and we keep getting better from here.”

Fossil Ridge has now won four in a row after a midseason skid in which they lost three of four games.

Stargate and Cornerstone Christian hosted a cancer benefit to raise money for the sister of a volleyball player at the school.

During the team’s home match on Wednesday against Cornerstone Christian, the Eagles raised more than $2,000 for Gabby Spangler, the second-grade sister of Stargate’s Adriana Spangler who was diagnosed with leukemia in July 2016.

Gabby attends Cornerstone’s elementary school. The two schools partnered to benefit Gabby’s family. During the match, they sold pink t-shirts, had a basket raffle and also had kill sponsors. All gate proceeds went to Gabby, as well.

Stargate volleyball coach Karlie Segeff was behind much of the event, and made it a reality.

Stargate won the match in four sets, 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20.

  • Colorado Academy names Nathan Oystrick its first hockey coach

Colorado Academy is starting its hockey program this winter, and on Tuesday announced that Nathan Oystrick will be the team’s first coach.

“This is a super strong staff who have some great background in the game,” Mustangs athletic director Bill Hall said on Thursday. “We are excited to build our program, especially with Nathan leading the way.”

Oystrick played professional hockey for 10 seasons, including a stint with the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers. He played college hockey at Northern Michigan, where he was captain for two seasons.

Oystrick most recently was an assistant with the Atlanta Gladiators of the ECHL.

The Mustangs’ new team is the latest indication of growth in the sport. In 2017-18, both Chaparral and Woodland Park will have new varsity teams.
