  • 5A boys golf state tourney: Eaglecrest’s Davis Bryant secures individual title; Regis Jesuit top team

AURORA — Davis Bryant broke away from a close field with a clutch back nine holes, and is now the Class 5A boys golf champion.

A year after finishing runner-up, the Eaglecrest senior claimed the 5A boys golf individual title on Tuesday with a two-day score of 3-under. He beat runner-ups Dillon Stewart of Fossil Ridge and Canon Olkowski of Grand Junction by three strokes.

“This is awesome,” Bryant said after his round. “I’ve been waiting for this for a while.”

Bryant parred each of his first 10 holes on Tuesday, then had back-to-back birdies to put himself in the lead. He played a bogey-free second round and hit 12 fairways.

“It was a grind out there,” Bryant said. “The front nine, I couldn’t get any putts to go in the hole.”

Stewart entered the day as the first-round leader at 2-under, with Bryant, Olkowski and Regis Jesuit’s Calvin McCoy knotted at 1-under.

Olkowski, Stewart and Bryant were grouped together on Tuesday, and they seemed to push one another. The trio, who have grown up playing against one another, each took turns atop the leaderboard at various points, and were all tied at 1-under through nine holes.

“I think the comfort level in the group definitely helped me,” Bryant said. “I like playing with my friends, and that’s fun. It made me feel a little bit more confident and relaxed out there on the course.”

Stewart took the lead at 3-under after 11 holes. Olkowski, looking to become the first 5A champion from the Western Slope since 2000, notched an eagle on the 11th to get to 2-under. Bryant secured a birdie to go to 2-under.

Bryant then tied Stewart at 3-under with another birdie on the 12th.

“The one on 12 was unexpected,” Bryant said. “That was kind of a hard putt. I’m glad that one went in. That helped.”

Things stayed that way until the 15th when Olkowski and Stewart both bogeyed the hole. Those two also bogeyed the 16th. Bryant parred both holes, pushing his lead to three strokes.

“That was where I wanted to put the pedal down,” Bryant said. “I wanted to make them make birdies to try and catch me.”

Regis Jesuit claimed the team championships with a two-day total of 16-over. Cherry Creek (+23) was second, while Arapahoe and Grand Junction (+24) tied for third.

The Raiders got scoring rounds from seniors Calvin McCoy (+2), Cameron Kirke (+5) and Drew Anderson (+9).

This is the Raiders’ third-straight team championship. They have now won seven of the past eight boys golf titles in 5A, and have finished at least runner-up for the past nine seasons.

“We had freshmen come out to watch today, and they’re looking at Cal McCoy and Cameron Kirke and Drew Anderson, and they’re saying, ‘I want to be them,’” Regis Jesuit coach Craig Rogers said. “I think it prompts them and it calls them to want to work real hard to dedicate themselves to stepping in their footsteps and standing on their shoulders. Success does beget success. They see their dreams in front of them in a way.

“And that’s the way these seniors were, and we’ve been able to keep it going,” Rogers continued. “I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Just as Cherry Creek, Arapahoe and Grand Junction seemed to be closing in down the stretch, Regis Jesuit’s seniors steeled themselves and secured another title.

“They just handled their emotions their emotions so well, and stayed so steady,” Rogers said. “They played the last three holes incredibly well.”

  • 4A boys golf state tournament: Thompson Valley’s Darren Edwards, Montrose claim titles

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

LITTLETON — Raccoon Creek was not in a very giving mood on Tuesday. It allowed just one golfer in the entire field at the Class 4A boys state golf tournament to shoot under par.

Thompson Valley’s Darren Edwards was not that golfer. But he didn’t have to be.

His one-over-par 73 on Tuesday was good enough to make him a champion, so he figured that would do for the day.

“I found my putter really well today,” Edwards said. “I put myself in good spots and I just played smart.”

He started the day in three-way tie with Valor Christian’s Jake Welch and Roosevelt’s Tyler Severin. It was a two-horse race after one as Severin started the day with a double-bogey.

Edwards was playing par golf for the first four holes and trouble around the fifth green led to his first bogey of the day. But it wouldn’t matter as Welch made double-bogey, so even at two-over for the tournament, Edwards had the outright lead.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com

He made another bogey on No. 8, but got it back with a birdie on nine and knew that he could start playing a little more aggressive golf. As a result, he made three birdies in four holes.

“On the back nine, I could be a little more aggressive when I needed to and do what I could do to score,” he said.

Eagle Valley’s Barrett Jones was the only player all day to shoot in red numbers. He was three-under on the day at one point and briefly held a share of the lead with Edwards.

Falcon’s Ryan Welsh was the only other player to even shoot one-over.

Montrose had the best day as an overall team. The Indians matched their effort of 17-over from Monday and held off Evergreen by six strokes to win the team championship. It’s the second title for the Indians with the first coming back in 2003.

“We had three sophomores and a freshman so that’s a good problem to have,” Montrose coach Dave Woodruff said. “It’s a neat little experience for these kids.”

The Indians had two finish in the top-10 in the tournament. Micah Stangebye (eight-over_ and Jordan Jennings (nine-over) were two big pieces of the Indians’ championship win.

“It feels good,” Stangebye said. “It was a fun stretch because we didn’t know what we were at and whether or not it was close.”

Knowing they were only up one stroke going into Tuesday’s final round made that part of it a little stressful, but Stangebye and his teammates were able to add a little bit of a cushion to lock up the first-place trophy.

Defending team champion Discovery Canyon finished sixth. Defending individual champion Luke Trujillo was just one of many victims of Raccoon Creek and finished with a 84 on Tuesday.

The conditions were also much more enjoyable for the second round as the clouds broke up and the sunshine that evaded Littleton all day Monday, finally made an appearance. That helped the conditions on the course which Edwards and the Indians fully took advantage of.

“It was a little warmer so the course dried out in the afternoon,” Edwards said. “This course did an awesome job.”

  • State golf: 3A tournament’s first day wiped out; 4A and 5A on schedule

    (Bethany Brookens/CHSAANow.com)

LAFAYETTE — The Class 3A boys golf state tournament at Indian Peaks Golf Course has been changed to a one-day format due an unplayable course.

There was a meeting at 9 a.m. to determine if the course was playable for Monday’s scheduled first round, and it was determined that Indian Peaks is not playable due to standing water on the course.

“We’re going to have a one-round championship tomorrow with the anticipation that the weather will be better tomorrow, and the course will be in better shape,” said CHSAA associate commissioner Tom Robinson, who oversees golf.

On Tuesday, the same pairings and tee times from Monday will be used.

The course at Indian Peaks needs 12 hours of no rain to drain completely.

4A boys golf, held at Raccoon Creek in Littleton, went off as scheduled.

Likewise, the 5A tournament held at CommonGround in Aurora, is on schedule.

Live results from today’s state tournaments are available here, or on the CHSAA Golf app.
