  • Ralston Valley football rolls to victory in regular-season finale

ARVADA — The roller-coaster ride of regular season for Ralston Valley football ended Thursday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

The Mustangs defeated Rocky Mountain 34-9 to conclude a 6-4 record, 4-1 in Class 5A Mt. Wilson League. The victory pretty much guaranteed a post-season berth for Ralston Valley after the Mustangs won 6 of 7 games to close the regular season.

“We’ve gotten our act together these last few weeks,” Ralston Valley junior quarterback AJ Jergensen said. “We are really confident going into playoffs.”

Ralston Valley started the season 0-3 with losses to Columbine, Fountain-Fort Carson and Pomona. The Mustangs turned things around with five straight wins and nearly defeated Eaglecrest (9-0, 5-0). The Raptors needed a last-second field goal to grab a 17-15 victory last week.

“We don’t really care where we play. We just have to play to the best of our abilities,” Ralston Valley senior receiver Jake Jones said about the playoffs. “We’ve almost beat some really good teams. Now it’s time to beat some good teams.”

It’s now a waiting game to see where Ralston Valley will be for the 5A 16-team state tournament.

“We are going to be a good team on the road, a high-seeded team,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd said. “We’ll give it our best shot.”

The Mustangs could finish in a 3-way tie depending on the result in the lone CHSAANow.com 5A poll top-10 Week 10 match-up — No. 10 Arvada West versus No. 2 Eaglecrest on Friday at NAAC. If A-West hands the Raptors their first loss of the season the Mt. Wilson League will finish in a three-way tie for the league champion, which earns an automatic bid to the state tournament.

Ralston Valley, No. 13 in the RPI standings heading into play this week, would also get it if it stays in the top-16.

“We’ve had some bumps in the road, but it’s a completely different atmosphere now at school, with the fans, everything,” Jones said.

Ralston Valley took control early Thursday night at NAAC scoring touchdowns on its first four offensive possessions. Jergensen had a trio of touchdown passes in the first half. Jones (5 yards), along with juniors Calvin Hunt (19 yards) and Brad Roberts (18 yards) all had touchdown catches.

“It was fun to be able to get it done on the ground and through the air tonight,” Jergensen said of his first four-touchdown passing game of the season.

Roberts also scored on a 17-yard touchdown run to give the Mustangs a 28-3 lead at halftime.

Rocky Mountain’s lone points in the opening half was a 22-yard field goal by senior Maxwell Poduska after 21-unanswered points by the Mustangs to start the game. The Lobos (3-7) got a 1-yard touchdown run by junior Cameron Morrongiello late in the fourth quarter to make the final score 34-9.

The lone Mustang score of the second half came on Jergensen’s fourth touchdown pass. Hunt caught a wide receiver screen pass and took it to the house for a 27-yard touchdown.

Now, Ralston Valley waits until the 16-team 5A state tournament bracket is released on CHSAANow.com on Sunday.

“It’s been that way since workouts started this summer,” Jergensen said of the Mustangs dealing with adversity this season. “We’ve been getting ready for moments like this. We love to play on the road. We’ll give whoever we get a run for their money.”

  • No. 8 Pueblo South stakes claim as a top football team after convincing win over No. 1 Ponderosa

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

PUEBLO — Marcell Barbee and Zach Cozzolino must be exhausted. They have to be thrilled with Pueblo South’s 53-24, league championship clinching, win over Class 4A’s No. 1 Ponderosa. But still, they must be dead tired.

The Colts’ offense was on full display on Thursday in what had been billed as one of the most anticipated showdowns of the season. The Pueblo South faithful who made their way into Dutch Clark Stadium were given a treat as Cozzolino threw for 451 yards and six touchdowns.

Three of those went to Barbee who hauled in nine total catches for 220 yards. The Colts (9-1 overall, 5-0 Foothills) wanted to make sure that everyone in the state of Colorado knows that they are not to be brushed off with the playoffs starting next week.

“(Ponderosa) was good,” Barbee said. “But I think we’re the most talented team. I have faith in my team every day. We chase excellence and we came here for this.”

The Mustangs (9-1, 4-1) won the coin toss and elected to take the ball to start the game. Before Barbee even had a chance to make a play on offense, he established the tone on defense. He intercepted a pass from Sterling Ostdahl setting up the Colts’ first touchdown, a three-yard touchdown run from Cozzolino.

“We knew coming in that this was the league championship,” Barbee said. “It’s like a playoff game for us so if we came out and played to our expectations, I think we have a chance. That interception really set the tempo.”

Ponderosa was able to drive down to the Pueblo South 32, but a field goal attempt from Isaac Power fell short.

And the Colts went right back to work. Cozzolino put his team up two touchdowns by finding Thomas Pannunzio for a 47-yard connection.

Less than halfway into the first quarter, the Pueblo South sideline was surging with energy.

The Mustangs finally got on the board with a one-yard touchdown run from Nick Hoff. Cozzolino responded with a 80-yard bomb to Barbee for his second passing touchdown on the night.

“It felt great,” Cozzolino said. “It was just a great team effort. Everybody put in a great effort.”

Cozzolino ran for one more before the halftime buzzer and the Colts, who’s only loss this year came to Pueblo West, went into the locker room with a comfortable 25-10 lead.

“They came out and just played a great game,” Ponderosa coach Jaron Cohen said. “They have a great collection of skill guys and they made a lot of big plays.”

Pueblo South came out in the second half and maintained their rhythm of scoring two touchdowns per quarter. Their running game opened up a bit as Steve Brock broke for 65 yards, setting up a Cozzolino touchdown pass to Jeremy Cody.

By the time the Mustangs were able to find the end zone again, it was a 46-10 game and home crowd at Dutch Clark had already begun celebrating a league title.

“I thought our kids would play hard. I thought our kids would play well. I know our kids were prepared,” Colts coach Ryan Goddard said. “I didn’t expect that, because that’s the No. 1 team in the state and we have a lot of respect for what they’ve done this year.”

Both teams now await the results of the final RPI rankings and the football seeding meeting which will be held on Sunday. With the win, the Colts will be at home. Ponderosa was a top-10 RPI team coming in, so a playoff berth is likely.

The Mustangs and Colts looked like entirely different teams on Thursday night, but starting now they have one thing in common. There are no more guarantees for one more week. It’s now time to win or go home.

  • 3A boys soccer roundup: Salida bests St. Mary’s on the road

(Photo courtesy of Marcus Hill/Mountain Mail)

Salida has been much better on the road than they’ve been at home this year. So having to travel to St. Mary’s for the second round of the Class 3A boys soccer tournament wasn’t a big deal.

Even if the Pirates had won the regular season meeting back on Sept. 9.

This time, it was the Spartans who came away victorious. Junior Camden Gillis scored in double-overtime to give Salida a stunning 1-0 win. Up next is a quarterfinal showdown with No. 3 Colorado Academy.

As the No. 27 seed in the tournament, Salida has now come away with two upset wins in the tournament, each time beating their higher ranked opponent by a single goal.

Delta had a good day on both sides of the ball. The offense put up three goals and keeper Felipe Bedoy didn’t let anything by him as the Panthers advanced with a 3-0 win over DSST-Stapleton.

They’ll see Colorado Springs Christian School in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Roaring Fork’s improbable run in the 3A tournament continued Tuesday with a 2-0 win over the Academy.

The Class 4A Jeffco League will likely have Littleton, Evergreen, D’Evelyn, Standley Lake and Golden all make the 32-team field for the 4A state tournament. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Littleton was not ready to call it a season. The Lions went into the second round of the Class 4A boys soccer tournament as the No. 15 seed and were faced with the daunting task of facing No. 2 Kennedy.

Seniors Zach Maguire and Ethan Schwartz didn’t care. Neither did junior Ruben Cervantes. All three scored goals as Littleton beat Kennedy 3-1 to advance to the 4A quarterfinals.

The Lions also got a standout performance in goal as Luis Ramos played all 80 minutes and turned away five shots to get the shutout.

    (8) Skyline 1, (9) Durango 0

Skyline defended its home field against a tough Durango team that poised a threat in 4A all season long.

The 1-0 win over the Demons put the Falcons into the quarterfinals where they will see No. 1 Air Academy.
