  • Castle View names Fruita Monument’s Todd Casebier its new football coach

Castle View made big waves on Wednesday, hiring Todd Casebier to be its next football coach.

Sabercats athletic director Derek Cordes announced the news in a press release. Casebier will replace Dustin Pfeiffer, who was 6-24 in three seasons.

“I really believe Castle View has some of the qualities in place to be vastly improved next year,” Casebier said in a statement. “Coach Pfeiffer and his staff put some good things in place. The defense was solid and I like the way the offensive line played. Improving as a team is going to take more effort, preparation, a great coaching staff and supportive parents. It’s a team effort in every way.”

Casebier, a 20-year coaching veteran, has brought a number of programs to prominence. He comes to Castle View from Fruita Monument, where he was 22-12 in three seasons. Fruita went 10-1 last season in Class 4A, and made the postseason in each of Casebier’s three seasons.

His career record stands at 175-60, which includes 18 playoff appearances in 20 seasons, 11 league championships, and 12 coach of the year awards.

Casebier led Palisade to the 3A title in 2003, and then spent 10 seasons as the coach at Montrose. He led the Indians to the 4A title game in 2014.

At Fruita Monument, Casebier led the Wildcats to their first-ever 5A playoff win.

Castle View is set to compete in 5A’s Metro South League in the upcoming two-year cycle. The Sabercats return a number of key contributors, especially on defense.

“I think we have an outstanding principal in Rex Corr and athletic director in Derek Cordes,” Casebier said. “I need to hire a quality staff and meet the team and parents. I have a plan in place that has worked for me and know we can do great things with this school, community, and administration.”

Chaparral is in search of a new football coach.

Rod Dobbs, who led the Wolverines over the past four seasons, has stepped down, according to athletic director Rob Johnson. His teams were 24-19, including three-straight seven-win seasons.

“Coach Dobbs has been a great leader with our football program and our school for the last 10 years,” Johnson said in a statement. “Coach Dobbs’ passion and energy for the Chaparral football program will always be remembered.”

Before he was head coach, Dobbs spent six seasons as Chaparral’s offensive coordinator. He was also the head coach at Prairie View from 2006-08.

Chaparral went 7-4 last season in Class 5A.

After the season, he was named the 4A runner of the year as part of the all-state cross country teams.

In the classroom, Sprout carries a 4.0 GPA.

He is the fifth athlete from Valor Christian to be named at Gatorade player of the year in their sport.

Our end-of-season hoops is giving us “a bit of everything” as our mid-week column report covered, and the end-of-week action didn’t let us down either!

The Fever Crew also had a chance to catch up with one of our state’s top talents in a Saturday Ball Fever “chat” with Denver East’s Daylen Kountz.

    Let’s get to it:

    The Look Back

    Thursday, Feb. 8

    • Malik Fofaana and Myron Hamilton score 15 points each helping Montbello (FNE) earn the league win over foe Thomas Jefferson 66-56.
    • Joel Scott turned in a 24 point, 5 rebound effort and No. 2 Lewis Palmer shut down Discovery Canyon in the fourth quarter only allowing 8 points in the 11-point win.
    • Longmont likes to refer to their squad as “blue collar” and they grinded out a tough 4A top-10 win over No. 7 Silver Creek 49-37 and were able to hold scoring machine Trent Dykema to 11 points while junior Brady Renck scored 18 in the win.
    • Doherty, who was in at No. 10 in last week’s 5A poll, left no doubt in their battle vs. Rampart winning by 27 in the rivalry game. Senior Joe Golden scored 17 and junior added a “monsta” 16 point, 15 rebound double-double.

    Friday, Feb. 9

    (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)
    • A-West takes a slight lead in Jeffco … but “it’s not over”
    • Never want a score book controversy to come into play … but it did in Chatfield/Bear Creek
    • You can only play “who they put in front of ya” and No. 4 GW had no mercy on Denver West and Xavier Cooper led MANY Patriots in the scoring column with 17.
    • Huge night for No. 10 Widefield’s Tre Pierre with 26 points and 8 rebounds in the 10-point win over Harrison.
    • Game was tight early but Smoky Hill used a 26-8 fourth quarter push to shut down Arapahoe 71-47.
    • No. 3 Rock Canyon was licking their chops in anticipation of the neighborhood rivalry game vs. Highlands Ranch. Sam Masten and Tyson Gilbert both scored 18 points as the Jags gradually pulled away 56-38. The Ranch fans were tough on Gilbert when he visited his former school last year…Gilbert got the last laugh on this one!
    • Guards Sam Bannec and Elijah Martinez were both feeling and scored 17 points each in Regis’ rout of Ponderosa.
    • Brendan LaRose with a nice 19 point, 11 rebound double-double in No. 7 Falcon’s 9-point win over Air Academy.
    • Extra Hoops!! It took overtime and 17 points from senior Branden Bunn for Eaglecrest to pull off a 1-point victory over Cherry Creek.
    • It was a rivalry game for the “Pride of Parker” with Chap/Legend hooking up for their annual neighborhood battle. Umm, Ronnie DeGray III didn’t get the memo that these rivalry games are supposed to be close! DeGray was “stat-stuffin” once again with 27 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals! Is the deep ball more your thing? Look no further than class of 2020 standout point guard Kobe Sanders, who lit the gym up with 7 three pointers (tied a school record) on his way to 25 points in the 82-61 win for the Wolverines.
    • There goes the teamwork and balanced style of the Grizzlies again! Five players in double figures led by Kaison Hammonds 16 points helped ThunderRidge erase a halftime deficit and ultimately beat Mountain Vista by 14. A strong week from the Grizz, who look to be voted No. 1 in this week’s poll.
    • Julian Lucero put up 14 points for Pueblo West but not enough as they went down big for the second time this season to No. 1 Pueblo South who is making it known they are king of Pueblo right now and have an eye on being crowned the champ of 4A in a month from now. How about a 13 game winning streak for the Colts?!!

    (Marlee Smith/CHSAANow.com)

Always great to catch up with outstanding young men and our Fever Crew had a ‘lil’ Ball Fever “chat” with CU Buff Bound Daylen Kountz after his Angel’s win over Denver South Saturday.

Kountz is averaging 23 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals per game for the Angels, who were ranked 5 in last week’s poll.

Daylen scored 17 and pulled down 9 rebounds in the 20-point win over D-South which sets up a ThunderDome showdown Saturday vs. GW for the city title!

“Our team is getting better game by game,” said Kountz.

East has a game Monday and we didn’t want Kountz looking too far ahead, but he added, “The game against GW will be hard fought and I think it will come down to who does the little things down the stretch.”

Daylen is excited for his future as a Buff but is focused on finishing out his tenure as an Angel first: “I want our team to remain humble and just take it one game at a time heading into the playoffs.”

Always impressed with this young man’s calm demeanor and perspective on the game. Thanks for the “chat,” Daylen!

    • 5A top-10 action Saturday and the Wolves come out on top.
    • Senior Luke Johnson with 23 points for streaking Longmont who drubbed Summit by 40…
    • Golden is a strong No. 4 in 4A right now and Adam Thistlewood shined again with a 29 point, 10 rebound double-double in the Demons 19-point win over Littleton.
    • Another 4A senior, Jeremy Randle, stepped up with 23 points for No. 6 Valor Christian in 10-point win over Wheatridge.
    • Demarious Carey led four Spartans in double figure scoring for No. 10 Doherty who poured it on Palmer down south.

  • Dakota Ridge and Chatfield basketball rivals come together for a special cause

LITTLETON — Student-athletes from Dakota Ridge and Chatfield high schools worked together Feb. 9 to bring joy to children going through battles of their own.

“It’s really important,” Dakota Ridge senior Koby Ryckman said about working with Chatfield outside of the basketball court. “These kids are going through so much at such a young age. My favorite thing is doing it with a rival school.”

Girls and boys basketball players from Dakota Ridge and Chatfield joined forces for a couple of hours in the afternoon Friday to host a Valentine’s Day craft party at Children’s Hospital. More than 20 students, coaches and administrators from the two rival South Jeffco high schools made the trip to Aurora.

“It’s super cool to reach out to kids that need a bright light in their day,” Chatfield junior Christian Holmes said. “It’s super cool to have fun with them and enjoy some time with them.”

Dakota Ridge junior Maggie Hawley, left, helped bright up the day for patient at Children’s Hospital. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Dakota Ridge senior Maggie Hawley was busy helping the steady flow of in-patient children who came down from their rooms to design Valentine’s Day cards.

“It’s important to develop community awareness,” Hawley said. “Sports aren’t the most important thing. People are struggling and going through stuff. It’s important to help them out and make them feel better.”

While Dakota Ridge and Chatfield has done a number of joint ventures like last Friday’s, it doesn’t stop there. The Eagles and Chargers have a varsity basketball doubleheader schedule for Tuesday, Feb. 13, where it will be a “Gold Out” for Childhood Cancer Awareness.

The girls (5:30 p.m.) and boys (7 p.m.) on Tuesday night will feature several events to raise funds for Dakota Ridge junior football player Christian Fredrickson who is battling a rare cancer.

“It’s a rival game and we know it will be a packed crowd with Chatfield and us,” Dakota Ridge athletic director Matt Heckel said. “It’s a great chance to showcase the great things we can do as a community in our south area.”

Heckel added that Fredrickson is doing well through is battle with cancer.

“It’s been a really hard thing for our school,” Ryckman said. “It’s cool that we can do something like that (Gold Out) for him and to show that we are with him and all fighting with him.”

While Chatfield and Dakota Ridge basketball teams are focused on getting ready for the state tournaments that begin next week, they both know some things are more important than games.

“We go at it on the basketball court, but it’s fun to come together to help out kids,” Holmes said. “We can put that rivalry aside, have fun and help other people.”

  • Fossil Ridge breaks national and state records en route to 5A girls swimming title

FORT COLLINS — Fossil Ridge started the Class 5A girls swimming state championships with a national record. They ended it by scoring the most team points in state history.

It was about as dominant championship performance as the state has seen across any sport — and gave the squad its second-consecutive team title.

“The girls, we knew they were capable, and they’ve been waiting for this since last year’s state meet,” said Fossil Ridge coach Carolyn Fries. “They were ready to go.”

The SaberCats kicked off the day by eclipsing the national high school record in the 200 medley relay. Bayley Stewart, Zoe Bartel, Coleen Gillilan and Kylee Alons combined for the time of 1:38.13

That mark broke the 1:38.77 figure set just a day earlier by Harpeth Hall, a school in Tennessee. It also marked the fourth consecutive season that Fossil Ridge had won the 200 medley relay.

“They saw that team break it last night, and that just fueled them today,” Fries said. “It’s been a goal since last year. It was the same medley relay last year, and they just missed it.”

Nearly three hours later, Fossil Ridge set a record in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing 1:34.15. The old record was 1:34.40, set by Cherry Creek in 2011.

The SaberCats nearly set another record in the 400 freestyle relay, going 3:22.53. The record was set in 2011 by a Missy Franklin-led Regis Jesuit squad at 3:22.42.

By the time the meet ended on Saturday night, Fossil Ridge had won seven of the eight individual events, and all three relay races. Combined with impressive depth, the SaberCats finished with 424 points, breaking the state record of 399 by Cherry Creek in 2010.

“We have very, very talented girls, we have great leadership,” Fries said. “They had the motivation, we have really good team culture, and I think that’s what drives their performance.”

Gillilan (100 butterfly, 200 freestyle), Bartel (200 IM, 100 breaststroke) and Alons (50 free, 100 free) each won two events. Stewart won the 100 backstroke, and was third in the 200 IM.

For Bartel and Alons, it was the second-consecutive year they’d each won those events, while Gillilan repeated in the butterfly.

Chatfield freshman Kathryn Shanley had an outstanding meet with a win in the 500 freestyle, and a second-place finish in the 200. Shanley won with a time of 5:02.44 in the 500, beating fellow freshman and training partner Melinda Johnson of Dakota Ridge (5:07.72).

“It’s pretty surreal, it’s a pretty exciting moment,” Shanley said. “It was really fun. I looked up at the clock and saw I got first, and it was just really exciting. I’m really proud to be part of Chatfield and represent Chatfield in that way.”

    Franny Cable wins diving championship

Arapahoe junior Franny Cable captured the 5A diving championship with a total score of 531.45.

Cable, who was second last year, beat out runner-up Samantha Tamborski of Douglas County (499.10), and Anna Kemper of Lewis-Palmer (474.75).

“I’m just in complete shock,” Cable said shortly after she won. “I was just coming in hoping to do my best. I wanted to be in the top 3, but I’ve always dreamed of being the (champion).”
