  • Ed McCaffrey hired as Valor Christian’s new football coach

Ed McCaffrey, a 13-year NFL veteran, has been named the next head football coach at Valor Christian.

The school announced the hire on Monday. McCaffrey will be formally introduced as coach during an event at the school on Tuesday.

“Ed has been a part of the Valor community for 9 years, and now we’re honored to call him Coach McCaffrey,” Valor Christian athletic director Jamie Heiner said in a statement. “In addition to the incredible experience he brings in developing athletes and their competitive skills, he has a heart for mentoring young men, desiring to help them build character and leadership that will last well beyond their high school years.”

Said McCaffrey: “I am committed to the Valor community and genuinely care about our student-athletes as I have prayed and cheered for them at every football game since 2009.”

McCaffrey doesn’t really need any introduction. Aside from his NFL career, as well as his prior work as the color analyst on radio broadcasts for the Denver Broncos, the McCaffrey name has long been synonymous with Valor Christian.

Each of his four sons have played multiple sports at the school, starting with Max (2009-12) and continuing through Christian (2010-14), Dylan (2013-17) and Luke (2015-present). Valor Christian has won seven football titles, including five consecutive from 2009-13. Each team has featured a McCaffrey brother in a starring role.

“Today I no longer play the game, but I continue to live a life filled with faith, family and football,” McCaffrey said. “I believe coaching football is the best way for me to serve God. Playing football at Valor is not a four-year decision but a lifetime decision that will form our young men as athletes and
    as leaders.”

Ed McCaffrey, who played for the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants from 1991-2004, will be the third football coach in the school’s history. He takes over for Rod Sherman, who resigned in December. Sherman led the Eagles to 5A championships in 2013, 2015 and 2016, and his teams were 57-11 overall.

Sherman had been with the school since it opened in 2007, serving as Valor Christian’s first athletic director and the team’s offensive coordinator under first coach Brent Vieselmeyer.

Vieselmeyer led the school to four titles, and was 55-11 in five seasons. He left after the 2012 season to pursue other coaching opportunities, and has been an assistant with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders since 2015.

The expectations will undoubtedly remain high for Valor Christian in 2018 and beyond. Luke McCaffrey returns as the team’s presumptive starter at quarterback after spending his first three years as a do-everything athlete for the Eagles, including time at QB. Also back is running back Joshia Davis, a CU commit, and a number of key players on defense.

McCaffrey’s hiring is the latest coaching move this offseason. Follow all the movement in our coaching changes tracker.

  • Ball Fever: Boys basketball is approaching its final stretch

    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

We predicted an exciting end to the week in our mid-week report on “brutal league play” but even our Fever Crew underestimated the electric atmosphere that surrounded the Continental league battle for the top spot between Chaparral and previously unbeaten Rock Canyon.

What game sells out at 3:30 p.m. for a 7:00 p.m. start time? Yes, the sign of our big school ball getting really good and student/community support on a high! Oh, it will get better come March.

Let’s see how the rest of the week played out:

    The Look Back

    Thursday, Feb. 1

    • Malik Fofaana scored 16 for the Warriors but Montbello couldn’t stand up to Denver South’s team effort where everyone scored at least 6 points or more led by soph D. Carter’s 12…balanced Rebels!
    • Tylor Trinh kicked in 14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists in Monarch’s neighborly rivalry 5-point win over Boulder.
    • Vista Peak jumped out 10-5 in the first quarter and won by seven never relinquishing the lead vs. visiting Thornton.
    • Senior DeMarious Carey was “stat-stuffin” 26 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in hot Doherty’s win over Pine Creek.

    Friday, Feb. 2

    Chaparral Rock Canyon boys basketball
    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)
    • Our digital media “guru”, Ryan Casey, was all over the most electric atmosphere of the year so far in No. 3 Chaparral hosting unbeaten No. 1 Rock Canyon. Even without one of their stars the Wolverines jumped on junior Ronnie DeGray III’s 27 point, 11 rebound effort to win big
    • The Fever Crew got out to Jeffco land where our guy Dennis Pleuss fully has his hand on the pulse! Valor visiting No. 3 Golden certainly didn’t disappoint and Adam Thistlewood’s crew stepped up while he faced a little foul trouble. Thistlewood is as good/smooth as advertised and really like Joe Madsen’s inside work as the Demon’s strong man. Skapich has a nice touch and solid ball control running the show for Valor. Good 4A ball!
    • No. 4 Longmont cruised over Niwot.
    • Things are tight in the ever tough Centennial league and Grandview is keeping its pace.
    • Lewis-Palmer is priming for a late run behind the combo of Joel Scott and Matthew Ragsdale (26 on this night).
    • Pueblo Central put up a tough test vs. No. 1 Pueblo South but lost by 8, 49-41 … check out Brandon Martin’s highlights here.
    • CU Buff-bound Daylen Kountz came up one rebound short of a double-double scoring 23 points and pulling down 9 rebounds for Denver East who pulled away from DPL rival Lincoln by 27!
    • Quite a scoring fest for Silver Creek and Greeley Central who combined for 150 total points in the Raptors 10-point win. Trent Dykema again scored more than 20 points and was joined by Nick Eaton’s 21 in the win.
    • Looking for a “30 piece?” … senior Kaison Hammonds for one-loss 5A No. 2 ThunderRidge has it for you and he added 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals “stat-stuffin” the Grizzlies to a 22-point road win at Highlands Ranch.
    • Regis got a late scare from Legend but Sam Bannec’s 15 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists helped the Raiders hold on for a tight 55-53 win.
    • Pierre Taylor’s 17 points and 70% shooting from the field lifted Pueblo West to a 16-point win over Pubelo County.
    • Chase Rogers led four Evergreen players in double figure scoring as they pulled away from Littleton by 34.

    Saturday, Feb. 3

    • Highlands Ranch bounced back from the home loss to T-Ridge with a rare late season match with Denver South. The Falcons rode Brendan Sullivan’s 20 points per game to the 12-point victory.
    • Eaglecrest is just outside our top 10 but still receiving votes. They closed the week with an 11-point win over Arapahoe. Warriors take the loss but have nice highlights!
    • Aaron Bokol with 15 points for the Raptors in the win.
    • Liberty has a couple votes in our poll and flexed their 5A muscle vs. 4A No. 5 Pueblo West winning by 12 behind Moz Doria’s 13 points!
    • One loss Longmont closed another strong week shutting down Rocky Mountain by 23, 63-40 at home. Longmont 15-1 and a strong 4A No. 4 right now.
    • Make it another strong statement win in Centennial play for Smoky Hill who may be hitting their stride at the right time. A 16-point win over a hot Overland squad is no small feat.
    • Stud “two-sport” star Marcel Darby is leading No. 1 Pueblo South at 18 points, 6 rebounds per game and they needed it vs. 5A Pine Creek winning 63-54. Colts looking to prove they deserve that No. 1 spot!

  • No. 6 Lakewood girls hoops is on a tear with its ninth-straight win

LAKEWOOD — It wasn’t the last time Lakewood’s girls basketball team will play on its home court, but it was Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers, No. 6 in the latest Class 5A CHSAANow.com rankings, had their regular-season home finale against Columbine. While it’s a guarantee that Lakewood (16-3, 8-1 in 5A Jeffco League) will be at home for the playoffs, Saturday was important to honor the Class of 2018.

“I don’t have words,” Lakewood coach Chris Poisson said when asked about his senior class. “They are amazingly special. We’ve been through a lot and grown together. To see them now… it’s hard to believe they won’t be here anymore. They are apart of our lives so much.”

Seniors Sassy Coleman, Hannah Renstrom, along with the Emsbo twins — Camilla and Kira — have been on varsity all four years for the Tigers. During that stretch Lakewood has a 79-20 record, two appearances in the 5A state quarterfinals and last year’s trip to the first state championship game in the program’s history.

While the on-the-court accomplishments are numerous there has also been the off-the-court events that the group has been through. Mackenzie Forrest, Lakewood’s all-time leading scorer, passed away after a tragic car accident after the 2016 season. Shortly after that assistant coach Joe Poisson, Chris’s father, died suddenly from a heart attack.

Then there was the news before the start of this season that Kira, who will continue her basketball career at Princeton University, would miss her senior campaign because of a knee injury that required surgery.

“Their legacy is imprinted in here forever,” Poisson said. “I love them so much.”

The final chapter is far from written for the group of six seniors. Lakewood remains atop 5A Jeffco with rival and No. 5 Ralston Valley (16-2, 7-1) with three conference games left for the Tigers before the postseason begins.

“I think our goal right now is to continue to grow so we are where we are supposed to be at the end of the season when it really matters,” Lakewood senior Camilla Emsbo said Saturday. “We are on the right trajectory.”

The upward trend continued with a 59-34 victory over Columbine (14-5, 4-4) on Senior Day. The Tigers were in a tight battle through three and a half quarters, but Lakewood’s pressure defense eventually took its toll on the young Rebels.

Lakewood outscored Columbine 31-10 in the final 12 minutes to pull away for the eventual 25-point victory. It was the ninth straight win for the Tigers.

“It got to us mentally, not only our bodies,” Columbine coach Greg Bolding Jr. said of the Tigers’ constant full-court pressure. “They are going to pressure teams and that is why you are going to see them go far and are on the top of Jeffco right now.”

Sophomores Quincey Baum (9 points) and Annika Schooler (8 points) led the way for the Rebels, but in the end Emsbo and senior Jessica Woodhead were just too much for Columbine to handle.

The 6-foot-5 Emsbo poured in a game-high 28 points. It was the eighth 20-plus point game for Emsbo this season, who has signed to continue her basketball career at Yale University. Woodhead added 15 points.

“One of the biggest things we do at Lakewood is our press,” Woodhead said of Lakewood limiting Columbine to 16 points in the second half. “A lot of teams don’t handle it very well and we just thrive off that.”

The 43 points Emsbo and Woodhead combined for, along with the stellar defensive performance was enough to keep Lakewood’s winning streak going despite some rough patches in the first half for the Tigers.

“We wore them out and we’ve done that to a few teams. It’s part of why we do what we do,” Poisson said. “Thank god Camilla and Jessica don’t get tired. I don’t even think about taking them out.”

Lakewood completed the season sweep of Columbine. The Tigers defeated the Rebels 52-43 on Jan. 10.

“Last time we played Columbine we weren’t really happy with how we finished it out,” Emsbo said. “It was really important to send a message, also you don’t want to lose on your Senior Day.”

Junior Maddy Hubych had a nice second half for the Tigers with seven points, including a key 3-point play late in the third quarter that pushed Lakewood’s lead to double-digits for the first time all game. Sophomores Aaliyah Sabala and Nadia Trevizo also contributed with 3-pointers in the second half.

“We are really lucky to have a team where everyone is capable of stepping up,” Emsbo said. “That is what a championship team is.”
