  • In front of huge crowd, No. 3 Chaparral boys hoops upsets No. 1 Rock Canyon

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

PARKER — Chaparral knows its not going to win any state championships in February, but the Wolverines sure announced themselves as contenders on Friday night.

The Wolverines, ranked No. 3 in Class 5A boys basketball, handed top-ranked Rock Canyon its first loss of the season in a 73-57 home win.

“The number one team in the state, you beat them, and it’s a good win,” said Chaparral coach Tellus Truesdale. “For us, this isn’t our goal, it’s a step towards our goal, but it’s not our goal.

“Tonight showed us that we can play with anybody, and it gives our guys confidence,” the coach added. “Hopefully we take care of business in the next four games, because in this conference, there’s no sleepers.”

Chaparral star Ronnie DeGray III led all scorers with 27 points.

“It’s amazing, it’s a great feeling,” DeGray said, “but we’ve still got to get it done.”

The highly-anticipated matchup had been circled all week, and fans — especially students, on both sides — showed out in force. The game sold out, and fans started to be turned away at 5 p.m. ahead of the 7 p.m. tipoff.

It made for a playoff-like atmosphere.

“It was once-in-a-liftime,” said DeGray, a junior. “I’ve never seen it like that, not even for one of our rivalry games.”

“We were talking about that before, even with the Rock Canyon kids,” Truesdale said. “We said, ‘Regardless of the outcome, this one of those that in 20 years, at your 20th class reunion, this game is going to be talked about, the atmosphere.’ Even the fans, they’re going to remember this. Not just the players. And that’s what you hope for from a high school game.

“Both sides have amazing fans. We just told the guys, ‘Soak it up. Look around during warmups, and enjoy it.’”

Chaparral responded to the energy with a fast start to its first quarter. The Wolverines led the game from start to finish, including a 19-7 advantage after that first frame, and a 32-21 lead at halftime.

“We were pumped up,” DeGray said. “It felt like we didn’t even have to stretch for this game.”

“I thought our defensive intensity was huge,” Truesdale said. “We’ve been preaching that all year.”

Both teams found themselves in foul trouble. But Chaparral, already lacking depth and also missing junior guard Joseph Dalton with a foot injury, was able to play through it and hold off everything Rock Canyon threw its way.

“We’re not going super deep in that bench, so there are times that we’re scrambling,” Truesdale said. “I see coaches where they sit their guys, and they sit the whole half, but they end up with three fouls. There’s a fine line there, you’ve got to be smart.”

Bryce Matthews also had a huge game for Chaparral with 18 points, while Tanner Giles had 10, and Kobe Sanders had eight.

Rock Canyon star Sam Masten led his team with 21 points, and Tyson Gilbert had 18.

With the win, Chaparral improved to 16-3. Rock Canyon, meanwhile, is now 18-1.

  • Valor edges Golden in top-10 4A girls basketball match-up

GOLDEN — The reality was simple Friday night at Golden High School.

The loser of the Class 4A Jeffco League showdown between Golden and Valor Christian — both ranked in the top-10 of CHSAANow.com 4A girls basketball poll — would sit three games behind No. 2 Evergreen in the conference standings. The winner on the other hand would still cling to hope of catching the Cougars (16-1, 9-0 in league) in the league standings.

No. 7 Valor stayed in the hunt for the conference crown with a 43-42 road victory at No. 5 Golden. The chances of the Demons successfully defending their league title from last year might have been extinguished.

“That was a great hard-fought game by both teams,” Valor coach Jessika Caldwell said. “Golden is super talented with some incredible players. I’m really proud of our kids. They dug their heels in and made some big shots and got some big stops.”

The Eagles (15-4, 8-2 in league) were able to sweep the season series against the Demons with the win. Golden (16-3, 7-3) suffered a 55-53 loss to Valor on the Eagles’ home court just more than three weeks ago in their first conference meeting.

Valor — 4A state champions in 2015 and 2016 — did pay a price in the victory over the Demons back on Jan. 10. Freshman sensation Kindyll Wetta suffered a season-ending knee injury. Wetta was averaging 13.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5 assists and 4.8 steal per game through her first dozen games of her prep basketball career.

“We have four incredible seniors in the program,” Caldwell said of her team that is 5-2 since the loss of Wetta. “They said we are going to put our heads down and continue to play.”

Valor’s ability to shoot the 3-pointer successfully and take care of the ball in the closing minutes were key. Junior Sara Nealy was a perfect 3-for-3 from long distance for the Eagles on her way to a team-high 13 points.

“My teammates executed the plays well,” said Nealy, who had a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the third quarter that gave the Eagles the lead for good. “That’s the only reason why I got those open shots.”

Golden was led by senior Makena Prey. The 6-foot senior had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Prey hit a 3-pointer with under a second to play to cut Valor’s lead to 43-42, but the Demons ran out of time to complete their fourth-quarter comeback attempt.

“It really makes us come back and focus on what we are missing,” Prey said. “We aren’t moving as well on offense as we could be and our help defense isn’t where it should be. We are going to bring those to our next practice to get ready for our next big game.”

Golden and Valor both get another shot against Evergreen. The Cougars took down the Demons and Eagles in their first league meetings to grab the 2-game cushion. Evergreen hosts Valor on Feb. 13 and Golden on Feb. 15.

“Evergreen is obviously going to be a really big game, but we’ve got to focus on one game at a time,” Nealy said. “We’ve got to prepare well for D’Evelyn next week.”

The Jaguars (12-6, 5-4) beat Valor 59-52 back on Jan. 12.

Valor hosts D’Evelyn and Wheat Ridge next week. Golden is on the road next week against Standley Lake and Littleton.

  • No. 3 Golden cools off No. 6 Valor in 4A Jeffco boys hoops showdown

GOLDEN — Golden senior Adam Thistlewood has stressed all season that he trusts his teammates.

“It’s not a one-man show at all here,” Thistlewood said after Golden’s 76-61 home victory against Valor Christian on Friday night. “We played really well as a team tonight.”

In the Class 4A Jeffco League showdown against two top-6 ranked teams in the CHSAANow.com boys basketball poll, No. 3 Golden couldn’t ride on the shoulders of the Demons’ 6-foot-7 smooth scoring machine against No. 6 Valor. Thistlewood, who scored 47 points last Friday night against D’Evelyn, picked up his fourth personal foul with 4:05 left in the third quarter.

Despite having a 48-38 lead, without Thistlewood (22.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game) on the court for five minutes of the second half opened the door for the Eagles to make their run, and they did.

Valor went on an 8-0 run shortly after Thistlewood took a seat on the bench, but the veteran Demons didn’t panic.

“I don’t think so,” Golden senior Jack Moore said when asked if he was nervous with Thistlewood was on the bench. “We still have guys like Jack (McLaughlin) and Joe (Madsen) who can still put it in the hoop. Adam is the best player in the state, but we’ve got other guys who can finish it.”

Moore actually stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer with 2 minutes left in the third quarter to halt Valor’s run.

“That felt good,” Moore said of his 3-pointer with 2 minutes left in the third quarter that ended an 8-0 run by Valor. “That gave our team a lot of confidence. It really boosted us.”

Fellow seniors Joe Madsen and Riley Stoner had buckets before the end of the third quarter to keep Golden ahead 56-51 heading to the final quarter.

“The way we’ve been playing the last five or six games I’ve got complete faith in the other 10 guys on the team,” Golden coach Erik Buehler said as the Demons extended their winning streak to 7 games. “We are a senior-laded team so that carries us through a lot of moments. It’s the advantage we have right now.”

Thistlewood got back on the court with 7 minutes to play. He buried a 3-pointer and went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to finish with a game-high 28 points.

Golden outscored Valor 16-6 in the final 5 minutes to end a long losing streak against the Eagles.

“We finally got them,” Moore said of defeating Valor for the first time since Jan. 8, 2016.

Valor edged Golden 56-53 in the first meeting Jan. 10 on the Eagles’ home court. The Eagles had five straight victories over the Demons, including taking down Golden in two league meetings and in the 4A state semifinals last season.

“This was a big one. This was like a playoff game,” Thistlewood said. “They are good with a great coach (Troy Pachner). That was a league championship type game right there.”

Valor had a trio of players — juniors Hunter Shkapich, Jack Foley and senior Jeremy Randle — reach double-digit points, but giving up 76 points on defense was the most since before winter break for the defending 4A state champs.

“It’s a humbling experience for sure,” Shkapich said of the Eagles’ 10-game winning streak coming to an end. “It’s a tough loss. We just have to move forward as a team and get the next one hopefully.”

Valor (12-7, 9-1 in league) faces D’Evelyn and Wheat Ridge before its critical game at Evergreen on Feb. 13.

Golden (16-3, 9-1) has conference games against Standley Lake, Littleton and Green Mountain before another huge league match-up at Evergreen on Feb. 15.

While the Cougars (15-4, 8-2) suffered losses to Golden and Valor during the first round of 4A Jeffco conference games, Evergreen will have the home-court advantage against the Demons and Eagles to close the regular season.

“It will come right down to the wire and we still have a lot of work to do before we get there (Evergreen),” Buehler said of the tight race for the 4A Jeffco title.

  • No. 2 Lewis-Palmer boys basketball returns to top form with win over No. 8 Falcon

MONUMENT — Just north of Colorado Springs, the Lewis-Palmer boys basketball team is proving that it is still a team to watch out for.

Friday night’s 82-67 win over No. 8 Falcon was the fourth straight victory for the Class 4A No. 2 Rangers after dropping games last week to Liberty and Palmer Ridge. Lewis-Palmer wasn’t thrown off though and has been playing stellar basketball since.

In the first quarter, Lewis-Palmer (17-2 overall, 9-1 Class 4A PPAC) started the game off with a smooth three pointer from Joel Scott which Falcon’s Noah Martinez quickly match to tie up the game. The Rangers then kicked it into game mode and went on a 8-0 run that gave them the lead that lasted the rest of the night.

“Games like these give us the confidence to play in any game,” LP coach Bill Benton said. “Our guys have been able to attack on the offensive end and be able to step up and knock down key shots.”

Lewis-Palmer’s Matthew Ragsdale had an exceptional night with 26 points and three three-pointers.

“I was getting shots in the offense and I was making them, so I had the confidence to just keep shooting,” said Matthew Ragsdale. “All of the guys played their role tonight and helped us get the win.”

Joel Scott and Carter Kreischer also had a great night, each scoring 18 points to help Lewis-Palmer come away with a league win.

The fourth quarter started with a dunk from Scott, but the Falcons (14-5, 7-3) never gave up and continued to fight. Reece Warren would put up an impressive 26 points and Noah Martinez added 24.

Despite the Falcons coming into this game with a nine-game winning streak, a few missed passes and not connecting with shots proved to be too much to overcome.

“This was a team that was really hard to guard with some good guys and I knew we would have to play well,” Benton said. “We try to hold teams to 50 points a game and obviously we didn’t get that done, but the guys played a good physical game and I’m proud of them.”

With only four games left in the regular season, playoffs are in the back of minds for the Lewis-Palmer players.

“We still have a lot to get better on, but I’m looking forward to keep on improving,” Ragsdale said. “I’m excited and ready for March to come.”

  • Montrose boys basketball holds off Grand Junction Central for win

MONTROSE — Montrose boys basketball won a close game against Grand Junction Central on Friday, ultimately winning 36-35.

The game was tied at 24 entering the fourth quarter. Grand Junction Central started to pull away as the final frame opened — or so it seemed.

The Warriors led 33-26 with just less then two minutes left.

But then Montrose senior Kade Terrell hit a 3-pointer and then three free throws to cut their lead to one.

Connor Imus then stole possession and scored to give the lead back to Montrose.

With 34 seconds left, Terrell made two more free throws to push the lead to 36-33.

Grand Junction Central would cut it to 36-35, but a last-second shot to win the game fell short.

Montrose is now 14-6 this season in Class 4A. The squad plays Grand Junction in a week.

Grand Junction Central is now 8-11, and will face Fruita Monument next Tuesday.
