  • Lucero dominates third quarter to give No. 12 Pueblo South a playoff win over No. 21 Pueblo County

PUEBLO — In the two regular season meetings between Pueblo South and Pueblo County, the score was close at halftime.

Then the Colts found a way to pull away with the game. The playoff meeting between the two teams followed a similar storyline. South led by five going into the half. And Gabi Lucero provided the spark that let her team pull away.

The Colts came away with a 66-56 win on Friday at the Southwest Motors Events Center. They move on to the Sweet 16 of the Class 4A girls state basketball tournament.

“Just from what we had learned from them, we knew exactly what we were doing,” Lucero said. “We had a game plan.”

Lucero had picked up her third foul in the second quarter, forcing coach Shannon Lane to pull her off the floor. When Lucero re-entered the game in the fourth quarter, she dominated. She scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the quarter and put the Colts (15-9 overall) ahead 51-38 going into the fourth.

“The joke on is our team is that we have to get her mad to play,” Lane said. “That’s just how she is.”

    It works.

South got off to a bit of a slow start to the game. A press defense forced several County turnovers, but Lane didn’t think her team did a good enough job converting those into points.

That allowed the Hornets (16-9) to keep the game close thanks to baskets from Erin Mauro and points in the paint from Hailee Stamps.

But it was the press defense that really hit County hard in the early stages of the game.

“It set the tone early,” County coach Mark Villegas said. “We had to go to our bench earlier than expected, but I thought our kids adjusted well.

Drea Nelson started the second quarter off with three-straight baskets to give the Colts some breathing room and they were able to hold off a County rally despite Lucero finding her way into foul trouble.

Once the whistle to start the second half blew, it was apparent that the Colts – and Lucero specifically – had woken up.

They looked more like the team that made its way to the 4A state championship game last year.

“They’re demise was a little early,” Villegas said. “They’re a good team and they have four kids who are as good as anybody in the state.”

They’ll have to prove that for as many games as they might have remaining. The Colts will travel north on Tuesday to play Valor Christian, a team they are very familiar with.

South lost to Valor 60-42 earlier in the year, but the Eagles will be without freshman point guard Kendall Wetta, who suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier in the year.

“(Hat’s off) to Jess (Caldwell) for having to deal with her point guard going out. Valor’s not the team that they were before,” Lane said. “I think they’ve lost three of their last couple of games without Kendall.”

Judging from the second half, South could easily be a team peaking at the right time. Tuesday will be an indication if this team is ready to get back to the Denver Coliseum in two weeks.

  • D’Evelyn girls basketball earns another go-around with rival Golden

DENVER — It’s now seven years and counting for D’Evelyn girls basketball team.

“We are excited about it,” D’Evelyn coach Chris Olson said after Friday night’s second-round Class 4A victory over The Classical Academy. “To get to the Sweet 16 for seven straight years with a school of 600 kids playing in 4A is pretty cool.”

The No. 7-seeded Jaguars (18-6 record) trailed early against No. 26 TCA, who have a similar pressure defense and running style as D’Evelyn. It took a 12-0 run by the Jaguars during a 5-minute span in the first quarter to turn the tide.

    D’Evelyn’s Bailey Marvel (15) had a team-high 12 points Friday night. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Still, D’Evelyn struggled shooting at times and missed five free throws in the second quarter while maintaining a 29-19 lead at halftime.

“On the one end, we are always going to play that way,” Olson said of the Jaguars’ controlled chaos style of pressure defending and pushing the ball up the court. “The shooting part has been more of a struggle this year then most. I think our team has kind of embraced it. They know we’ll go on a run scoring 12 points in a couple of minutes. Then we might not score for six minutes.”

The Jaguar faithful could relax a little when senior Angi Reed opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to give D’Evelyn a 42-30 lead.

“It was a big confidence booster for me personally,” Reed said of her 3-pointer that opened up the Jaguars’ first double-digit lead of the game. “It kind of felt like it sealed it a little bit.”

D’Evelyn had good balance scoring with seniors Bailey Marvel (12 points), Reed (11 points) and junior Tori Szathmary (11 points) all pouring in double digits. TCA was led by junior Maddie Ivan’s 15 points.

D’Evelyn and The Classical Academy both advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 4A state tournament last season. The Jaguars’ season ended there with a lost to Pueblo West, while the Titians’ season came to a close with a loss to Windsor.

D’Evelyn’s Tori Szathmary, left, is fouled by TCA’s Kaitlin Walters. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

TCA finished this season with a 17-8 record.

D’Evelyn is now on a 6-game winning streak. The Jaguars finished in a 3-way tie for second in the talented 4A Jeffco League. In fact, the conference featured four teams — Valor Christian, Evergreen, D’Evelyn and Golden — holding seeds in the top-10 for the state tournament.

All four advanced with wins Friday to the Sweet 16 coming up on Tuesday, Feb. 27. No. 10 Golden is next up for D’Evelyn. The Demons swept the two league games against D’Evelyn with wins of 53-39 and 40-32.

“It’s hard to beat a team three times,” Reed said of the re-match against Golden. “Playoffs, anything can happen.”

D’Evelyn must contain Golden seniors Abby Garnett and Makena Prey. The 6-footers have combined for 63 points in the two previous meetings against the Jaguars.

“It’s hard guarding (Abby Garnett and Makena Prey) when they are in together,” Marvel said. “We need to pressure their guards and force other girls to make plays besides Abby and Makena.”

Olson believes despite being the higher seed and at home, the Jaguars will be seen as the underdog in Tuesday’s Sweet 16 game.

  • No. 20 Columbine upsets No. 13 Doherty in 5A girls basketball tournament

COLORADO SPRINGS — It was an intense and exciting playoff atmosphere at Doherty High School Friday night. The Class 5A girls basketball playoff battle between No. 20 Columbine and No. 13 Doherty came down to the wire and resulted in the Rebels getting the 46-44 upset win.

“Just keep calm,” is what Columbine’s coach Greg Bolding had to say when his girls came back to tie the game in the fourth quarter with three minutes left.

The game had started off slow for Columbine who missed their first three shots of the game, allowing Doherty to take a six-point lead early on. Columbine managed to keep it close and finished the first quarter trailing 11-10.

The next two quarters had the same story where baskets from Doherty’s Unique Semadeni and Brionna McBride kept the Spartans in the lead, but Columbine continued to be right at their door knocking.

The fourth quarter started with Columbine’s Maura Singer making two free throws that tied the game. It was short lived though when Doherty went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead with five minutes remaining.

However, the Spartans couldn’t outlast the resilience of Columbine, as multiple fouls and mistakes lead to free throws and turnovers. With the score at 45-44 with Columbine ahead, Columbine’s Jenna Lohrenz was fouled with 11 seconds left.

“(I had) so many nerves,” Lohrenz said as she stood on the free throw line with the game in her hands. “I just focused in on my teammates and told myself you got this Jenna, you can make this and when I made the first one, I knew we had it.”

With the free throw that Lohrenz made, Columbine was ahead 46-44 with only a few seconds left for Doherty to get a look at a shot.

With only two and a half seconds left, Doherty passed the ball in to an open Abbi Noll who’s shot fell short and as the buzzer rang out. The Columbine girls and coaches rushed the floor in celebration.

“This game is so huge for our program who haven’t won a playoff game in eight years,” Bolding said. “I’m very proud of my girls the way they were able to calm their emotions and be able to come back and get the win.”

Doherty was lead in scoring by McBride with 12 points and Mykiaa Minnis with 11. The Spartans finished their season with a League Championship and an overall record of 20-4.

With this win over Doherty, Columbine will advance to the Sweet 16 and face No. 4 Grandview on Feb. 27.

“Our team is resilient,” Bolding said. “We’re going to come together and put up a good game plan, so we can continue to be successful as we move forward.”

LEADVILLE — Platte Canyon had never won an individual skiing title in the 53-year history of its program.

    Now, the Huskies have two.

Luke Bailey and Alex Cregan each won the Giant Slalom events during the state skiing championships at Ski Cooper on Thursday. They are the first-ever individual champions from Platte Canyon. The school had never placed an individual higher than third.

Bailey won the boys event with a two-run total of 2:09:09. Vail Mountain’s Michael Resnick was second (2:10.02), and Evergreen’s Hayden Holtrop was third (2:10.97). Bailey had the top time in each run, improving his first-run time from 1:05.13 to 1:03.96 in his second.

Bailey finished seventh last season in the GS during the state championships.

Evergreen led the team score in the alpine event, finishing with 163 points. Aspen was second with 162, and Battle Mountain (151) was third.

Cregan captured the girls event by finishing her two runs in 2:15.44. Aspen’s Devan McSwain was second (2:15.90), and her teammate Levyn Thomas was third in 2:16.11.

Cregan had never finished higher than fifth this season in the GS, and was 12th at state last season.

Aspen had the most team points from the Giant Slalom with 167, Evergreen had 141, and Durango was third with 137.

In the Nordic side of things on Thursday morning, Vail Mountain’s Cameron Wolfe captured the Nordic Classic title, winning the event in 16:48. Everett Olson of Aspen was second in 16:56, and his teammate Jacob Barsness (17:25) finished third.

It was Wolfe’s first state title. He finished second in the Classic last season, and was third in the Skate. He also placed third in the Classic in 2016. This season’s Nordic Skate race is on Friday afternoon.

Olson and Barsness paced Aspen as the Skiers jumped out to the lead in the team race. Combined with an 11th-place finish from Noah Wheeless, Aspen finished with an event-best 167 points. Summit (162) was second as a team, paced by Peter Haynes’ fourth-place finish.

Aspen’s Chelsea Moore won the girls Classic event, finishing in 19:23. Kate Oldham of Colorado Rocky Mountain placed second (19:45), and Noelle Resignolo of Summit (20:26) was third.

Moore had placed third in last year’s Classic, and was fourth in the Skate. In 2016, she was 12th in the Classic.

Aspen and Vail Mountain tied for the lead in the Classic as a team, both earning 163 points. Emma and Molly Blaksee finished fifth and sixth for Vail Mountain, while Aspen also had Lizzy Barsness place eighth.

In terms of the overall team race, Aspen heads both the boys and the girls events.

The Skiers are on top of the boys event with 329 points. Battle Mountain sits in second with 296. Vail Mountain, the defending champion, is third (295), Steamboat Springs (284) is fourth, and Middle Park (281) is fifth.

Aspen also leads the girls event, totaling 330 points after Thursday. Battle Mountain (280) is second, Summit (267) is third, Lake County (265) is fourth, and Vail Mountain is fifth (252).

The state championships continue on Friday with the slalom and skate. A full schedule is available here.

  • Poudre boys hoops scores 1st-round upset of Arvada West

ARVADA — There was no answer for Poudre’s 6-foot-6 junior Damian Forrest when he got locked in Wednesday night at Arvada West High School.

Forrest poured in 21 points as the No. 39-seeded Impalas pulled off the 54-50 road victory of No. 26 seed A-West in the opening round of the Class 5A boys basketball state tournament.

“I my gosh. That was unreal,” Forrest said of his 9-point third quarter that helped give the Impalas an 8-point lead heading into the final quarter. “My coaches were behind me the whole way. They told me to keep shooting and it got my confidence up. It was amazing.”

After a strong first quarter, Forrest and the rest of the Impalas (12-12 record) could only muster up two points in the second quarter. The Wildcats (15-9) got right back into the game trailing 22-21 at halftime.

However, Forrest went to work against the undersized A-West squad.

“We tried to do what we could,” A-West senior James Pelon said of defending Forrest. “He is a beast.”

Pelon did what he could in the fourth quarter to keep from having the Wildcats’ season end on their home court. The senior poured in a dozen of his game-high 22 points in the final eight minutes.

A-West got within two points on a couple of occasions in the final quarter, but Poudre seemed to always answer to maintain its slim lead. Senior Sebastian Wells had a key layup with 28 seconds left and junior Jack Fisher made a pair of free throws to seal in the win.

“It’s awesome. I’m so happy for the kids,” said Poudre coach Jeff Brubaker, who is in his second season at the helm of the Impalas’ program. “Our kids have worked so hard. It’s awesome how they competed for each other tonight.”

Poudre finished in a 4-way tie for eighth place in the 5A Front Range League this year. Last season the Impalas had a 3-20 record and didn’t qualify for the playoffs.

“It’s insane,” Forrest said of advancing to face No. 7 Doherty in the second round. “Going from last year with three wins to playoffs and now second round. It’s insanity. It’s beyond words. We are so excited.”

Doherty (19-4) will host Poudre at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, in Colorado Springs with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16.

A-West had a wild 5A Jeffco League ride that ended with the Wildcats sharing the conference crown with Columbine. Both finished 10-4 in league play. A-West actually grabbed the highest seed from Jeffco in the 5A tournament with a No. 26 seed.

“We still get to hang up a banner,” Pelon said of the Wildcats sharing the 5A Jeffco title with Columbine. “Obviously we wanted to do better in playoffs. We’ll be proud to hang up that banner.”

A-West will lose senior Pelon, Hayden Spiegler, Isaiah Brewer and Zander Lynch to graduation. Josh Rogers and Ethan Lindeblad return to give the Wildcats some solid players to build on for next season.

It was a better night for the rest of the 5A Jeffco teams. Columbine and Dakota Ridge got home victories. Bear Creek and Chatfield managed upsets on the road to advance four Jeffco teams into the second round.
