  • Regis Jesuit beats Valor Christian to capture program’s fifth hockey state title

DENVER — Regis Jesuit hockey capped a perfect season on Tuesday with a state championship, firmly placing the Raiders among the state’s all-time elite.

This title, which came via a 2-0 win over Valor Christian at Pepsi Center, is the program’s fifth. All have come since 2008. The five titles are the second-most of any hockey team in state history — only Cheyenne Mountain has more with 14.

Regis Jesuit finished the season unbeaten at 23-0-0.

“We’ve had fantastic teams, and we haven’t been able to do it before,” Regis Jesuit coach Dan Woodley said of going unbeaten. “It is very hard. This team is special. They do the little things right. They work together as a team all the time.”

The Raiders turned in a smothering defensive performance on Tuesday, allowing just 11 shots.

“We figured out their forecheck quickly,” said Regis Jesuit senior Conor Kilkenny. “We played 200-foot defense, which is basically just keep it in their zone. Don’t let them in our zone, and they can’t get shots. … Our ‘D’ did a really good job of shutting them down.”

Regis Jesuit goalie Max Harlan, a senior, also had an outstanding game in net. It was his fourth shutout this season.

Included was a brilliant save with his left pad during a penalty kill in the second period on Valor’s Luke Lonneman. He also had a great save early in the third period when an Eagles player was in alone.

“Max Harlan played a great game,” Woodley said.

Kilkenny, a star throughout the playoffs, got what proved to be the winning goal with a short-handed tally in the first period.

“It got the crowd going, it got us going,” Kilkenny said, “and it set the tone for the rest of the game.”

Regis Jesuit allowed Valor Christian just one shot in the first period, and seven through two periods.

Kilkenny got Regis Jesuit on the board first when he scored a short-handed tally on a breakaway. He took advantage of a Valor Christian defenseman mishandling a faceoff win, and took off alone down the ice.

“What great play,” Woodley said. “We were upset because we took a penalty. He just turned it around, it was fantastic.”

The first period ended with the Raiders ahead 1-0, and out-shooting Valor Christian 6-1.

Then, in the second, Kale Lone added a power-play goal to extend the Regis lead to 2-0. Kilkenny picked up an assist, his sixth point in four games during the tournament.

Valor Christian goalie Trey Hirschfield had a great game, and kept the Eagles in it in the third period with a number of key saves, including on the penalty kill.

Valor Christian (20-3-0) was without Luke Wheeler, a senior and its leading scorer, due to an injury he suffered against Monarch in the semifinals.

“It’s a real shame that Luke Wheeler wasn’t able to play,” Woodley said. “He’s a great deal of their offense, and we really missed him playing, as well. All the condolences we can go out to Luke Wheeler.”

The game was a rematch of a tight contest between the two teams in December, a 2-1 Regis Jesuit win.

  • State hockey preview: Regis Jesuit and Valor Christian set to tangle for the title

If Valor Christian is set to enter uncharted territory, then Regis Jesuit is a team that not only possesses the map — they were practically the ones to draw it.

The two teams are set to meet for the state hockey championship on Tuesday night at Pepsi Center. It is Valor Christian’s first-ever title-game appearance, but the third consecutive for the Raiders, and seventh overall. All have come since 2008, and Regis Jesuit has won four championships.

“Uncharted territory,” Valor Christian coach George Gwozdecky said of reaching the final. His Eagles beat Monarch 4-0 in the semifinals last Thursday. “It’s exciting for these kids. Most of them had never been into a championship match kind of like this. I’m sure they’ve been in tournaments before throughout their youth hockey, but this is big. This is big for the school, this is big for the program.”

The Eagles, seeded No. 3, are now 20-2-0 this season. Their lone losses this season came to Monarch — the defending champions — and Regis Jesuit.

“I was teasing with (Regis Jesuit coach) Dan Woodley the other day that everybody was playing for the silver medal here,” Gwozdecky said. “I think Regis has the gold, and everybody else is just playing for the silver. He was rolling his eyes.”

The Raiders, unbeaten this season at 22-0-0, certainly have the experience having been in this game before.

“It gets easier every game,” said Regis Jesuit senior Connor Kilkenny. “Every time I step up in these semifinal games and state title games, it gets easier. Obviously this last one will be my biggest one as a senior.”

That not to say it’s not special for the top-seeded Raiders, who topped Chaparral in the semifinals.

    (Cindy Betancourt/eStudioWest.com)

“There are so many moving pieces for these state championships that it very rarely doesn’t feel humble for me,” Woodley said.

The two teams are fairly familiar with one another. It will be their second meeting of this season — Regis won 2-1 back on Dec. 16 with a third-period goal from Anders Erickson — but they have played four times dating back to the fall club high school season.

In fact, they met for the fall league title, a 6-5 Valor win in November in which the Eagles rallied from down a goal late in the third period.

The fifth meeting, for the gold trophy, is expected to be yet another battle.

“It’s amazing to be playing for a title,” said Valor Christian senior Tim DeBord.

  • Chaparral names Jeff Ketron its new football coach

    (Matt Daniels/MattDanPhoto.com)

Chaparral has hired Jeff Ketron to be its new football coach, athletic director Rob Johnson said on Tuesday.

Ketron previously was the coach at Douglas County from 1999-2013, and was also an assistant at Overland under the legendary Tony Manfredi. He takes over at Chaparral for Rod Dobbs, who stepped down last month.

“He is all about making relationships and helping young men grow up into gentleman of honor and respect,” Johnson said in a statement. “Our football program, school, and community have landed a superstar and we’re excited to get him in front of our athletes.

“The first thing he mentioned once he accepted the job was, ‘When can I get in front of the kids?’”

In his time as coach, Ketron led Douglas County to prominence, as the Huskies won the Class 5A title in 2005, advanced to the semifinals in 2006, and finished as runner-up in 2007. When he took over the Huskies in 1999, the team was 1-9 the previous season.

Ketron was named the Denver Broncos high school football coach of the year in 2005.

Chaparral went 7-4 last season in Class 5A.

  • Frank Palmeri, the “voice” of Colorado high school sports, passes away

    Frank Palmeri

For 57 years, from 1948 until 2005, Frank Palmeri was the “voice” of high school sports in Colorado. Palmeri passed away over the weekend at age 92. Funeral arrangements are pending.

A native Coloradan, Palmeri grew up in north Denver and graduated from Denver North High School in 1944. After a stint in the US Navy, he earned his bachelors and master’s degrees from the University of Denver. He later added work at the University of Colorado, Colorado State and Walden University.

He spent 45 years as a physical education, history, and English teacher, as well as a media specialist, in Jefferson County Schools.

He started announcing Denver Parochial League and Jefferson County sports, serving as public address announcer in every sport for the league. His distinctive, professional announcer’s voice is familiar to three generations of Colorado prep athletes.

He was the “voice” of the state wrestling for 51 years, and nearly that same number for the state basketball tournament and state track meets. Among his honors are the CHSAA Distinguished Service Award (1992) and induction into the CHSAA Hall of Fame (2012).

He was named the National Announcer of the Year in 2005 by the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers Association.

Palmeri’s rosary will be Monday morning at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. There will be a visitation on Sunday night from 5-7 p.m. at Horan & McConaty on Federal and Speer.
