  • Lakewood’s Camilla Emsbo named girls basketball player of the year by Gatorade

    (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Lakewood senior Camilla Emsbo has been named Colorado’s Gatorade girls basketball player of the year.

Emsbo, a 6-foot-5 senior, helped Lakewood go 23-4 and reach the Class 5A Final 4 this past season. She averaged 18.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.6 blocks, 1.7 steals and 1.7 assists per game.

Emsbo just the second Lakewood athlete to ever be honored as a Gatorade player of the year, following Darrin Muilenburg, who won the football award in 1985-86.

“Camilla is one of those kids who makes her team better, makes the players around her better,” said Columbine coach Greg Bolding. “She does everything the right way, and with a great attitude. She’s one of the greatest players I’ve coached against.”

Off the court, Emsbo carries a 4.83 weighted GPA. She will play college basketball at Yale.

Emsbo volunteers locally with the Key Club, and also on behalf of an adaptive swimming program which specializes in therapeutic treatment for children with disabilities.

  • No. 2 Mountain Vista baseball survives comeback attempt from No. 1 Cherry Creek

    Mountain Vista Cherry Creek baseball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

HIGHLANDS RANCH — Zach Paschke didn’t want to waste any time to give his team the lead against the top-ranked team in the state.

Mountain Vista came up to bat in the bottom of the first after Sam Ireland struck out three of the first four hitters he faced. Then Paschke sat on a 2-1 fastball and blasted it over the fence in left-center.

“It was the perfect pitch,” Paschke said.

That triggered a first-inning rally for the Golden Eagles, hung on late to get a 8-7 win over Cherry Creek on Friday.

“It’s always a good start (to hit a home run) and anytime you have Sam on the mound as well, to start it felt like our day, but when you’re playing Cherry Creek you never know,” Mountain Vista coach Ron Quintana said. “You have to play fundamental baseball.”

That may not be the best word to describe the game on both sides. Each side committed three errors in the field resulting in unearned runs being charged to each starting pitcher.

And that’s something that will haunt Cherry Creek coach Marc Johnson through the weekend. He is fine losing to talented team like Mountain Vista, but he’s not happy that his boys did it by giving away numerous free passes through the course of the game.

“Any time you give away 11 free bags, you shouldn’t win,” Johnson said.

It didn’t help that while Paschke and the Golden Eagles (4-0 overall) took an aggressive approach at the plate early, the Bruins (3-1) looked tentative against Ireland, a University of Minnesota commit.

    Mountain Vista Cherry Creek baseball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Ireland seemed very much in control when facing his first five hitters. Two reached base on errors, but no damage was inflicted until a wild pitch let Jack Moss score from third to put Creek on the board.

Beyond that, Ireland was getting opposing hitters into holes early, forcing them to be less selective with what they felt they could swing at.

“I was just trying to fill up the zone, get them off balance,” Ireland said. “I was mixing in everything I had.”

Creek’s Jake Lawrence settled down after giving up three runs in that first inning. He retired six of the next seven hitters he faced, but an error from Tyler Schultz in the fourth got the Mountain Vista wheels moving again.

Paschke hit a RBI-single in the fourth which ended Lawrence’s day. The Golden Eagles scored twice in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.

That’s about the time the Bruins woke up. Schultz started the top of the sixth off with a single and Moss scored him on a RBI-double to right-center field.

Moss and designated hitter Alec Adolph scored on a Brice Martinez home run that brought the Bruins within two.

“In the sixth and the seventh, they picked up some energy and got after them a bit,” Johnson said. “We had a few things fall our way.”

Ireland helped his own cause by reaching base on a dropped fly ball in right field. He scored on a Grant Magill single to push the lead back to three runs.

After Brennen Dorighi and Schultz reached base in the seventh, Quintana was forced to bring in Nick Englhard to close the game as Ireland had reached his pitch count limit.

Moss ripped a 2-RBI double to make it a one-run game with the tying run in scoring position. But Englhard got the next two hitters to fly out, putting Mountain Vista in line to take over as the top team in next week’s Class 5A CHSAANow.com baseball poll.

But that’s just on paper. Friday’s result just affirms what the Golden Eagles believe they are.

“We’re in a good position,” Ireland said. “I think we’re the best team in the state. I really do.”

They’ll have plenty of chances to prove it as their schedule lists four more teams that are currently ranked in the state’s top 10.

  • No. 7 Manitou Springs girls soccer showing it wants to be considered among 3A’s elite teams

Manitou Springs Pagosa Springs girls soccer
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

MANITOU SPRINGS — It’s been a fairly light-hearted atmosphere on the Manitou Springs sidelines during the first three games of the girls soccer season.

The Mustangs are having fun. And why wouldn’t they be?

After Saturday’s 9-0 win over Pagosa Springs, Manitou remains undefeated and is outscoring opponents 23-0. A challenge looms ahead on Tuesday when Jefferson Academy visits the Mustangs (3-0 overall), but as far as starts to the season, things couldn’t be going better for the Class 3A No. 7-ranked team.

“We’ve played really well; I’m happy,” coach Ben Mack said. “From our standpoint, we’ve done everything that I could’ve asked for and I’m thrilled about that.”

On Saturday, Mack’s team got goals from six different players. Brooklyn Mack’s three goals against the Pirates (0-3) led the team. Bridget Bodor added two while Tera DeRamus, Ailsa Connors, Caileen Sienknecht and Sophie McKeown each added one apiece.

The biggest concern for Coach Mack heading into the season, was the inexperience that his back line would have after losing his senior defenders from last year.

But with the way the Mustangs have attacked the opposing net so far this year, it has helped the newcomers ease into their roles on the defensive end of the field.

“(The forwards) getting wide helps the defense with our shape in the back,” DeRamus said. “It helps us push the ball up and get a lot of goal scoring chances.”

The start of the season has a familiar look for the Mustangs compared to what they did last year. They started the season with wins against Woodland Park, Bayfield and Pagosa before dropping one to Jefferson Academy. That was one of just two losses for the Mustangs on the year. The other was to eventual 3A state champion, The Academy, in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

With that in mind, Coach Mack has his eyes on Tuesday’s looming showdown with the Jaguars and the impact it could potentially have on Manitou as the season moves forward.

“That game is going to be very different from these last three,” he said.

Although the Pirates came away from this road trip without a win, their games against St. Mary’s (a 7-0 loss on Friday) and Manitou will help shape this team as they move deeper into its young season.

“It’s been two tough games,” coach Scott Galabota said. “I’ve seen a lot of improvement in our play. Hopefully it’s showing us what we’re working towards and what we’re building towards.”

The Pirates made the state tournament as the No. 11 seed last year, but ran into the buzzsaw that was The Academy.

Manitou Springs Pagosa Springs girls soccer
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Pagosa had a few chances to make something happen against the Mustangs as Bri Linzalone had a couple of free kick opportunities in each half. But the Pirates couldn’t make anything of those chances. Galabota understood that against a team as seasoned and talented as Manitou, the details are crucial when it comes to taking advantage of every opportunity.

“We’ve learned some valuable lessons in the tightness of our marking and the precision of our passes” he said.

As dominant as they have looked, the Mustangs are not without their shortcomings. Coach Mack is quick to point out that mistakes on the defensive side of the ball will lead to quick goals for teams like Jefferson Academy.

But as far as he and his girls are concerned, they belong in the conversation as one of the state’s best teams.

“I think a team to be reckoned with would be fair,” Coach Mack said. “I think we can own that and say that. I’ll have a much better idea of where we are after Tuesday.”

New rankings are due to be released on Monday, but as it stands now, it will be No. 2 Jefferson Academy against No. 7 Manitou Springs at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
