  • With rain in the forecast, baseball regionals and districts will have the option of playing Sunday

    Rain, as per usual, is about to mess with the spring sports postseason.

    Baseball’s regionals in classes 1A, 3A, 4A and 5A are slated to start on Saturday, and some districts in 2A will also be in action. The only problem is that Saturday’s forecast is also calling for a high chance of rain in most parts of the state. In addition, rain is forecast overnight on Friday, meaning fields may already be wet before Saturday’s moisture arrives.

    As such, should any regionals or districts not be able to complete play on Saturday, games will be played on the first available date. That includes Sunday as an option, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann.

    “Should weather postpone us, the host schools will have the latitude to meet the needs of the schools involved in the tournament,” said Borgmann, who administers baseball. “That includes Sunday and Monday as an option, and adjusting the recommended time schedule.”

    Borgmann added that the daily pitch count rules remain in effect, regardless of when the regionals or districts are played.

    Any changes to the dates of play will be updated on the brackets on CHSAANow once known.

    The 3A, 4A and 5A regional baseball brackets will be seeded and released on Wednesday. 1A’s regional/state bracket was posted on Monday.

    The 1A state baseball championship is scheduled for May 17, while the state tournaments are scheduled to begin on May 18 in 3A, 4A and 5A. The 2A regionals are May 18-19.

  • Regis Jesuit and Dawson are the tops seeds in state boys lacrosse brackets

    Heading into the state boys lacrosse playoffs, all eyes will be on Regis Jesuit and Dawson. Those schools earned top seeds in their respective brackets, with playoffs set to begin on Wednesday.

    Each bracket has 16 teams, seeded a seeding committee who used criteria laid out in the bulletin, including the final RPI standings of the regular season. State championship games will be held May 18 at Mile High Stadium.

    Class 5A

    Regis Jesuit seems to like even-numbered years. Since 2014, the Raiders have won the 5A title game every other year.

    The Raiders fell short in last year’s title game, falling to Cherry Creek. They went 14-1 on the year, their only loss coming to Torrey Pines out of San Diego.

    The Bruins enter this year’s bracket at No. 5, meaning they’ll open the postseason at home.

    Kent Denver, Mountain Vista and Columbine round out the top four seeds, meaning they’ll host first-round games with quarterfinals for the tournament moving to Legacy Stadium.

    Class 4A

    Thompson Valley Dawson boys lacrosse

    Dawson takes the No. 1 seed in the 4A bracket after a 14-1 season. Those same Mustangs beat Thompson Valley, the No. 2 seed, earlier this season, setting up a potential rematch between the two powerhouses in the title game.

    Defending champion Valor Christian comes into the tournament as the No. 8 seed.

    Battle Mountain (No. 3) and Golden (No. 4) round out the top four seeds in the bracket. Play in 4A will begin on Wednesday with the championship game set for May 18 at Mile High Stadium.

  • Cherry Creek grabs top seed in 2018 state girls lacrosse bracket

    Cherry Creek is primed to make this a memorable one when it comes to the girls lacrosse state tournamet. The Bruins grabbed the No. 1 overall seed in the bracket, which was released on Monday.

    They sit right above defending champion Colorado Academy. Both teams finished the regular season with a 15-0 record.

    Colorado Academy has beaten Cherry Creek in each of the last three state championship games.

    The bracket was seeded primarily by the final RPI standings of the regular season.

    Columbine and Regis Jesuit round out the top four seeded teams in the bracket. Those teams and the rest of the teams seeded through No. 12 will receive a first-round bye in the state tournament, which begins play on Wednesday.

    If the Bruins can take advantage of the top seed and ride it to another state championship, it will be the school’s first since 2013. The Bruins lead the state in girls lacrosse state titles with 10. The Mustangs have the second-most with four.

    Cherry Creek and Colorado Academy met in last year’s state title game where the Mustangs came away with a 8-5 win.

    Draws for the 2018 Class 5A girls tennis state tournament, held May 10-12 at Gates Tennis Center in Denver, are below.

    All matches start at 9 a.m. each day. The first two rounds at each position will be played Thursday. Friday morning will be all semifinals, and the playback matches will start immediately afterwards. All third- and fourth-place matches and finals will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

    Only those teams who qualify four or more positions to state are eligible for the CHSAA state team championship title. The bracket creation process is as follows:

    1. All 16 individuals/teams will be considered for placement on the draw.
    2. The top 4 individuals/teams will be placed.
    3. The committee shall consider the following factors (in no particular order of importance): strength of league, overall record, strength of competition, head-to-head competition and common opponents.
    4. The remaining Regional Winners (#1’s) will be randomly drawn for places on the draw.
    5. The Regional Finishers (#2’s) will then be randomly drawn for matches against a Regional Winner.
    6. All Regional Winners will be paired against a Regional Finishers.
    7. No two teams or individuals from the same Region will play each other during the first round of the state championship.
