BROOMFIELD — Broomfield’s girls soccer team was well prepared for the sticky situation it faced Wednesday night in the Class 5A girls soccer state quarterfinal against Columbine.

A goal by Columbine junior Tessa Barton in the 52nd minute looked like it would hold up and eliminate the No. 2-seeded Eagles from the state tournament on their home field. However, Broomfield coach Jim Davidson had a formula in place for this very situation and to eventually pull out a 2-1 overtime victory.

“It’s a little serendipitous. We trained up a goal and down a goal with five minutes to play the other day,” Davidson said. “We found ourselves down a goal with less than five minutes to play. We just reminded our girls to play with urgency. Somehow we were able to find the back of the net to get to overtime.”

The Eagles were awarded a direct free kick near the corner with less than three minutes to play in regulation. Broomfield senior Jessie Mooney sent in the kick and junior Lindsay Hudson was able to get a foot on it. The ball just bounced past Columbine goalie Madeline Samuelson to tie the game at 1-1.

“We didn’t defend that set piece well,” Columbine coach Brian Todd admitted. “We overloaded in the wall and didn’t have enough girls in the box. We hadn’t made a mistake like that defensively all year.”

Broomfield (17-0-1 record) didn’t waste anytime scoring the game-winning goal in overtime. Senior Ashley Tuccio fed a ball forward to sophomore Mallory Mooney, who was able to get off a solid shot. Samuelson, who had to make a handful of great saves in the final 20 minutes of regulation time, made the save.

“We knew coming in she (Samuelson) was really good,” Mallory Mooney said. “We knew we had to finish it on the ground if we were going to score.”

However, the rebound off Mallory Mooney’s shot went right to senior Hailey Stodden, who hammered the ball into the net in the 84th minute for the game winner to end the season for No. 7 Columbine (14-4) .

“It was a great individual effort by (Mallory Stodden) to take those defensive backs on and she put on a great shot on goal,” Davidson said. “It just ended up in Hailey’s lap.”

Samuelson had a brilliant two-year span as the Rebels’ goalie with 26 wins in net and 19 shutout victories.

“I know I should take responsibility for that,” Samuelson said of allowing the rebound on the shot in overtime. “If you can’t catch it as a keeper in a high-pressure situation like that it completely lets you down.”

“This is going to drive me forward for the rest of my college career. I’m never going to forget this day,” Samuelson said. “I think we are really upset right now, but especially for these seniors this will get us ready for college.”

The Eagles and Rebels met up in the state playoffs last season. Broomfield moved on with a second-round victory in a shootout, but eventually lost in the semifinals to Arapahoe.

“Hats off to Broomfield. They are a phenomenal program,” Todd said. “I absolutely love playing them. Good luck to Broomfield.”

Columbine won the first team state title in any girls sport in 2014 when the Rebels defeated Jeffco rival Ralston Valley 3-1 in the state championship game.

Broomfield’s lone girls soccer state title came in 2006 when the Eagles defeated Ralston Valley in the 4A state championship game. Broomfield has been close to another state title, finishing runner-up in 2015 (5A), 2014 (4A) and 2013 (4A).

“We just want to go all the way this year,” Mooney said.

  • Denver East’s Arria Minor sets records in 200 and 400, now has top time nationally

LAKEWOOD — Arria Minor knew Thursday was the day to take aim at the state record book.

The Denver East junior was on the mark. Minor set all-classification records in the 200 and 400 meter prelims at the state track and field championships as she ran in great conditions — mid 70s, relatively little wind. The forecasts for Saturday’s finals are calling for rain and wind — poor conditions to chase records.

“I knew I had to go for it today,” Minor said. “Colorado’s weather is terrible. I was definitely trying today for those records. … I tried to take advantage of (the good weather) as much as I could.”

Minor’s time in the 400, 51.92, broke the previous record of 52.49 set Regis Jesuit’s Ana Holland in 2013. It is also now the fastest outdoor 400 time in the nation by a high school girl this season, besting the previous mark by exactly 0.6 seconds, according to MileSplit. In addition, she ran the fastest 400 indoor time this season.

“I wanted to run 51 so bad,” Minor said. “I was telling all my friends — they are probably annoyed with me — ‘I want to run 51!’ ‘OK, Arria, then run it.’ So I definitely came out pretty hard. I was maintaining, I was tired, but it paid off.”

Earlier this season, Minor set the all-classification record in the 200, going 23.18. She broke that record again Thursday, finishing in 22.89. That time ranks second nationally.

Minor has won the 100, 200 and 400 in each of her first two seasons. She has the top time heading into Saturday’s finals in each event.

  • 1A state baseball: Timely hits give Caliche its second state title in four years

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

LAKEWOOD — A two-run lead had evaporated with one hit. But it didn’t faze the Caliche Buffaloes. They scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and Brayden Nichols held defending champion Nulca to just two hits to help Caliche win its second Class 1A state baseball title in four years.

“We knew we were good,” coach JP Lambrecht said. “We knew we could compete with these other guys in 1A. We played a tough 2A schedule and our seniors busted their butts for four years to try and get here.”

They didn’t just get there, they came away with the trophy that every team hopes to earn at the beginning of the season.

The Buffaloes (16-9 overall) got things started in the second inning. Mike Foster led things off with a triple and scored when Skyler Armstrong hit a ground ball to second base.

They got their second run of the game in the third when Zeke Johnson circled the bases thanks to a couple of throwing errors by the Mustangs (11-11).

But that two-run lead evaporated in the fourth inning thanks to a 2-RBI single from Cord Colson. The inning started off with a hit batter and a walk, something uncharacteristic for Nichols.

“I just needed to focus back,” Nichols said. “There at the end (of the inning) I found out what I was doing and I tweaked my delivery a little bit.”

He struck out three batters in a row to end that inning inning and allowed just one more hit the rest of the game.

But the game was now tied.

And the Buffaloes themselves weren’t getting the bat on the ball as well as they’d like. They had just one hit heading into the top of the fifth. Brock Briscoe got on with a single, Caleb Roth reached on an error and then Nichols helped his own cause with an RBI double.

Johnson then connected on a check swing and the ball squirted up the middle and scored two, giving Caliche a three-run lead.

“I wasn’t trying to swing at that,” Johnson said. “It felt great. The atmosphere was amazing. This is the biggest crowd we’ve had all year, so everything about it was great.”

With six outs to go, the Mustangs were hoping to overcome their struggles facing Nichols. Steven Vaughn reached base on a single in the sixth, but Nichols responded by striking out Sammy Puderbaugh to end the inning.

When he went out for the top of the seventh, he felt a little more electricity knowing that he and his team were just three outs away from a championship.

“You almost want it to be that way,” he said. “You realize that you’re just three outs away from a state championship so just get go out there and do it.”

He was involved with all three outs of the inning. He fielded a ground ball for the first and the struck out the final two batters he faced, sending his coaches and his teammates into a frenzy.

“This is our second one in four years,” Lambrecht said. “It’s something you put in the trophy case and when people come back and see it, they pat you on the back. It’s a nice feeling.”
