  • Sedgwick County, a three-time defending football champion, is embracing the target on its back

The most consistently successful high school football program in Colorado over the past three years? It’s Sedgwick County. And there’s no debate.

The 8-man team, which co-ops players from Julesburg and Revere high schools in Northeast Colorado, has gone 38-1 since the start of the 2015 season. The Cougars have captured three state championships. Their winning streak currently stands at 23 games — the longest in the state, regardless of classification.

Segwick County hasn’t lost a game to an in-state opponent since the 2014 season, going 32-0 in the past three seasons.

So, yeah, they are the team to beat. And they are the preseason No. 1 team in 8-man football.

That’s not to say it’s going to be easy. The Cougars lost quite a bit from last season, including three members of the All-State teams, and six seniors.

“We lost a lot of good kids from last year’s team,” said Sedgwick County coach Chris Michel. “We’re just kind of trying to find the identity of this team, trying to establish a culture in practice of being competitive every day, and kind of finding where these guys will fit into our system this year.”

One major piece is back, though, in senior Layne Green, the reigning 8-man player of the year who accounted for 28 total touchdowns last season, and also had 67 tackles on defense.

Also back is Beau Parker, a junior, who had 12 touchdowns and 71 tackles, and Dalton Carlson, another junior, who had 74 tackles.

Ethan Walter (two touchdowns, 53 tackles) will be stepping into the starting quarterback spot.

Eric Alcala, a senior, will also be big on both the offensive and defensive line.

So Sedgwick County’s quest to for a fourth-straight state title is very much alive. The Cougars would become the first team to win four-straight championships since Valor Christian won five from 2009-13.

“You try to fly under the radar, which is hard when you are three-time state champs,” Michel said. “A couple of the kids talk about having a target on our back. We talk about embracing that target. You know, loving having that target. ”

The 23-game winning streak is also a particular source of pride.

“I think that is something we want to defend,” Parker said. “I feel like every year, it gets a little bit bigger of a target on our back, and that’s something to play for every weekend when we’re going out on Friday nights. It just kind of gets the blood pumping a little bit more.”

The top-ranked Cougars open their season at home on Aug. 31 against Hoehne, a playoff team last season. They’ll also travel to Gilpin County’s new field, and have games against playoff teams Haxtun, Caliche and Merino. Dayspring Christian, typically among 8-man’s best programs, is also on the schedule.

“Every game — every week — is always a test,” Carlson said. “You never overlook a team. Every week, you play like you’re playing the best team. That’s been our main deal. We focus on one team at a time, and move week-by-week.”

And while this program has a lot of history, the 2018 team is a new group.

“It’s a new year, so we’re just keeping our focus on keeping our energy up, and improving every day,” Michel said. “Every team wants to improve every day, and that’s one of our focuses that we’ve made part of our team culture the last couple of years. We’re anxious to get started.”

  • La Junta confident that football success will continue under Ty Buderus

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

ENGLEWOOD — When asked which coach was tougher on them, the La Junta football players looked nervously at each other, then down the table.

Sitting in the confines of the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse at the UC Health Training Center, Ty Buderus awaited their answer. They conceded that it was the new guy and not his brother Clint, the man who guided them to the 2016 Class 2A state title.

But it was all in good fun and part of the experience of the Broncos’ first high school football media day. They all laughed about it before admitting that the brothers are very similar, just have their expertise in different areas of the game.

“Clint was offensive-minded,” senior quarterback Jon Nuschy said. “He ran the offense and Ty ran the defense and he’s just a defensive mind. Practice is more up-tempo with Ty because he pushes us a lot. I hope we go far for him because he deserves this.”

Ty was on on staff under Clint. When Clint took the job at Pueblo West, Ty was the natural successor for the position. Having been on staff, the transition into the head job was fairly seamless for Ty.

“It was an easy transition with being around it that long,” Ty said. “I’m just stepping in and taking over a few different roles that I didn’t have last year. It was a nice, easy transition.”

It helps that he has plenty of talent returning from last year which includes Nuschy, a two-time 2A player of the year. He ran for over 1,300 yards a year ago and scored 22 touchdowns. He was also success through the air when he needed to be, throwing for 679 yards and nine touchdowns.

Nuschy has helped the Tigers reach the 2A title game the last two seasons. Two years ago they topped Kent Denver 17-10. Last season the Tigers came up short of the state championship, losing to Bayfield 34-7.

Still, all-state voters took note of what Nuschy was able to do for his team. He doesn’t buy into too much, however. He would rather come away with a state title than a player of the year nod. He doesn’t let the recognition change his approach to the game and thinks there aren’t many people to pay too much attention, save for one playoff rival from the last few years.

“I don’t think a lot of people really look at it except for Bayfield,” Nuschy said. “I know Bayfield does. We just go into each game not scared and trying to do our best. I’m going to do my best and I know my line has my back and they’ll block for me the best they can.”

And the Tigers feel they’ll continue to be successful with that mindset. After advancing to the 2A title game the last two years, it’s hard for La Junta to settle for anything less. But they also know they can’t just expect the same result to keep happening.

They have to keep working and continue to go about the season they way they have in recent years. If they can do that, they feel the wins will follow them.

“You want to keep that kind of mindset,” Buderus said. “Right now, we’re worried about game one and winning that one and then we’ll move on to the next one. We can’t look too far ahead. We just have to take it one game at a time and the hard work will pay off.”

  • Alamosa softball gets first varsity softball win in school history

    (@erik_melgoza/Twitter)

The 2018 Alamosa softball team made a bit of history on Saturday.

The Mean Moose, in their first season field a varsity squad, picked up their first-ever first win with a 16-8 decision over Wray during the Valley/Platte Valley Fall Classic.

On Saturday, Alamosa trailed 7-6 in the bottom of the third, then rallied to go up 8-7. They eventually piled on more runs to take the 16-8 victory.

The team, coached by Roxi Vigil, plays in Class 3A’s Region 2, which includes perennial powers La Junta, Lamar and Rocky Ford.

They host their first varsity contest on Aug. 24 against Gunnison.

  • Football players get a small taste of the NFL at media day

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

ENGLEWOOD — Football players from 20 teams took part in the inaugural high school football media day hosted by the NFL’s Denver Broncos and CHSAA on Friday.

They went through a variety of different experiences: a crash course in dealing with the media and best practices in social media from the Broncos PR staff; a photo shoot; a tour of the Broncos’ training facility, where the event was held; and a Q&A session with statewide media.

“Being out here, you can feel the atmosphere,” said Eaglecrest linebacker Elijah Anderson-Taylor. “When you come here, you can feel the culture.”

On hand were players and coaches from La Junta, Chatfield, Sedgwick County, Peeetz, Eaton, Broomfield, The Classical Academy, Palmer Ridge, Columbine, Mead, Erie, Stratton/Liberty, Pomona, Eaglecrest, Grandview, West Grand, Pine Creek, Pueblo South, Strasburg and Centauri. The Broncos hope to expand the event next season.

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Each team brought between three and six players, along with a head coach or an assistant coach.

All seven classifications were represented. There were six returning champions in attendance, and seven runners-up.

One major topic of the day was starting anew, and not looking back.

“It’s a brand new start for us this year,” said Erie’s Nathan Hackney. The Tigers were runner-up in 3A. “Last year was a great memory. But this year is a whole different story. We’re going to try to make the same run, go for the same goals, but it’s a whole new game for us this year.”

Added Palmer Ridge’s Aidan Cullen, whose team won 3A last season: “I feel like the class this year understands that what we did last year is now the new standard.”

That’s not to say last year isn’t serving as motivation for some.

“We’ve been preparing since November,” said Centauri’s Bennie Chacon, whose team lost the 1A championship game in double overtime to Strasburg. “It’s been on our mind a whole lot.”

Added teammate Deontay Martinez: “It’s like eating and not getting full.”

There was talk of loaded schedules.

“You don’t get better playing weak teams,” said Grandview coach John Schultz.

“We wanted it that way,” said Stratton/Liberty coach Toby Kechter. “We want a chance to get better every week.”

Among the 5A teams, a common theme was the league realignment that returned to a more regional format.

“Those are the teams we want to play,” said Columbine’s Corbin Curry.

“It makes it more heartfelt, playing against those guys you grew up playing against,” said Grandview’s Mason Schultz.

For many players, it was their first time in such a setting — facing the media in a press conference.

    Ty Evans. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Even Ty Evans, the Palmer Ridge quarterback and CU commit whose national profile has grown in recent months, admitted that he had “never been in this atmosphere.”

“This is an awesome experience for us,” Sedgwick County coach Chris Michel said. “We know it’s a long ways out there, but stuff like this is awesome for us.”

“We’re really enjoying it and taking it all in,” said Mead’s Marcel MacPhail. “We’re here to learn and we’re here to grow and just spread the word about Mead.”

Many of the players remarked on the impact of the social media training they went through. Elijah Anderson-Taylor remarked that it was the “most in-depth thing that we possibly could have done as kids.”

Ultimately, the smiles were big on Friday. It was a day the players won’t soon forget.

“I don’t know about these guys,” Bryson Long of Peetz said as he gestured to his teammates, “but I’m having a great time.”
