  • Columbine softball belts out 9-run inning against Lakewood

LITTLETON — After a pair of close Class 5A Jeffco League softball victories to open conference play, Columbine didn’t mind a less stressful game Tuesday afternoon.

“This was nice to kind of put it in cruise-control,” Columbine coach Jim Santaniello said after a 13-1 home victory at Dave Sanders Memorial Field against Lakewood. “But we definitely have some things we still need to work on.”

The Rebels (13-5 record, 2-0 in league) were able to work on hitting in the bottom of the second inning against the Tigers (9-10, 1-3). Columbine sent 13 batters to the plate. The Rebels put up nine runs off seven hits and took advantage of three Tiger errors.

The big inning gave Columbine an 11-0 lead through two innings.

“I think we definitely came out swinging the bats a little better today,” Columbine sophomore Korbe Otis said. “We just need to keep sharpening it up and fine-tuning things. We’ll get after it next game.”

Senior Charlotte Stokes delivered the biggest highlight with a 2-run home run off Lakewood starting pitcher Lucy Carney in the second inning. Freshmen Riley Marshall, Mary Kitch and senior Daysha Mendez followed up with three straight hits after Stokes’s home run.

“It was huge and we were preaching to the girls to just try to hit the ball hard,” Santaniello said of the Rebels’ big inning. “I think some of the girls were getting to fancy, so we wanted to get back to really trying to hit the ball hard and it worked out today.”

Otis was her normal dominating self on the mound. She struck out eight batters over five innings. She scattered three hits and gave up a pair of walks.

The only run Lakewood scored was in the top of the third inning. Senior Lauren Rice stole second base and junior Anna Good scored from third when the throw went into centerfield.

The Rebels did commit three errors, but it wasn’t a concern for Otis.

“I know they (defense) has my back,” Otis said. “They have been working really hard. We just need to keep working away.”

Otis picked up her 10th win of the season and lowered her ERA to 1.79. She has 116 strikeouts on the season through 82.1 innings pitched and is clearly one of the top pitchers not only in 5A Jeffco, but the state.

“She (Otis) is the best weapon to have. We are so lucky to have her,” Santaniello said of the Rebels’ ace. “She just brings the same approach every day. She isn’t only an outstanding pitcher. She is a great leader, plays great defense and she is a great hitter. We just need to build around her.”

Looking ahead, the Rebels are on the road against Pomona (9-9, 1-2) on Thursday. The final three conference games next week will surely determine the league champion. Santaniello knows winning a league title will give the Rebels a lot of momentum heading into the postseason.

“It gives us more time to prepare and bond as a team,” Otis said of facing A-West, Ralston Valley and Valor the last week of conference play.

  • Baseball committee recommends a change to its mercy rule

AURORA — The baseball committee on Tuesday recommended an addition to its mercy rule on Wednesday, one that brings it in line with softball.

Currently, baseball’s mercy rule ends games when one team is up by 10 runs after five innings. Their recommendation is to end games when one team is up by 10 runs after five innings, 15 runs after four innings, or 20 runs after three innings.

The recommendation will be voted upon by CHSAA’s Board of Directors at their meeting next month. If approved there, the change will go into effect for the 2019 season.

Additionally, the baseball committee discussed how to handle upcoming reclassification and realignment. There was talk about adding a sixth classification, which had support from the coaches association.

Another discussion topic was creating a top-level open division consisting of the top 16 or 24 teams, and then reclassifying the remaining schools into other classifications. Ultimately, they created a subcommittee to spearhead this effort.

The committee also recommended a universal pitch count rule for all levels. Currently, there is a different rule for varsity and sub-varsity players. If approved by the Legislative Council next April, this change would go into effect with the 2020 season.

There was also discussion about moving regionals to a double-elimination format. There was strong opposition to a true double-elimination format from the administrators on the committee. But there was some support for a modified four-team format which has a single-elimination first round, and then a best-of-three series for the remaining two teams.

No recommendation was made, but the topic of postseason format is likely to re-emerge next year.

The group also talked about implementing a minimum number of games in order to qualify for the postseason via the RPI. That is also likely to come back next season.

  • Green Mountain boys soccer knocks off the rust in time to defeat Wheat Ridge

LAKEWOOD — It took a little bit, but Green Mountain’s boys soccer team was able to flip the switch in time Monday night at Lakewood Memorial Field.

Wheat Ridge, looking for its first win of the season, grabbed a surprising 1-0 lead with a goal from junior Jean Baptiste Uwayezu in the 24th minute.

“Wheat Ridge came out hard and didn’t quit,” Green Mountain coach Ken Fehr said. “We didn’t come out hard and had to come from behind. Tying it before halftime was good.”

Green Mountain senior Zach Jesaitis got the equalizer in the 36th minute off a great centering pass from junior Connor Haussler. The Rams went on to score six unanswered goals to an eventual 6-1 victory.

“Connor had a beautiful run down the outside and crossed it in. I was running in parallel to him,” Jesaitis said describing his first of three goals on the night. “It was a nice shot to the corner and it went in.”

It was all Rams in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as Green Mountain (9-1 record, 2-0 in Class 4A Jeffco) poured in five more goals. Wheat Ridge (0-10, 0-1) fought hard, but couldn’t match the Rams’ offensive power in the second half.

“The first half was excellent,” Wheat Ridge coach Dave Osse said. “We’ve been struggling all year. We’re kind of young and things just haven’t gone our way. We did a great job first half.”

The goal the Farmers scored in the first half was just the third goal Green Mountain had surrendered this season. The Rams’ 2-0 loss to 5A Jeffco’s Chatfield was the lone other goals Green Mountain has given up so far this year.

“If you don’t finish your opportunities when you have them you let teams hang around,” Fehr said. “We did it in the second half.”

Jesaitis, junior Greyson Gines and senior Konrad Buschbacher scored goals in a span of four minutes — 52nd to 56th minutes — during the second half. Gines added a goal on a penalty kick in the 60th minute and Jesaitis finished off his hat-trick in the 65th minute.

“It bounced off his (defender’s) arm. I kind of felt bad,” Jesaitis said of his final goal. “I kind of felt bad. I didn’t want to celebrate too much. We were already up 6-1.”

Green Mountain hadn’t played in 10 days since winning its conference opener 1-0 against D’Evelyn on Sept. 14.

“We didn’t underestimate Wheat Ridge by any means,” Fehr said. “But we didn’t come out the way we did. We had a couple of days off and it showed.”

The Rams won’t be able to avoid a slow start when they face Golden at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at the North Area Athletic Complex. The Demons (8-2, 2-0) blanked D’Evelyn 2-0 on Monday night at NAAC. Golden is currently ranked No. 10 in the CHSAANow.com 4A boys soccer poll.

“Golden is going to be a tough test on Friday,” Jesaitis said. “Standley Lake and Littleton will also be hard.”

Wheat Ridge has a week off before turning to Lakewood Memorial next Monday, Oct. 1, to face Evergreen.

“We’ve got to find a way,” said Osse of the Farmers going after their first victory. “We’ll keep plugging a way at it.”
