  • No. 10 Ralston Valley football shuts out Fossil Ridge

ARVADA — Ralston Valley senior AJ Jergensen had a touchdown cycle late Friday afternoon at the North Area Athletic Complex.

Jergensen had a touchdown catch, threw a pair of touchdowns and carried one in on the ground in the Mustangs’ 49-0 victory over Fossil Ridge. It was a nice win for Ralston Valley, No. 10 in the CHSAANow.com Class 5A football rankings, after a close loss to 4A No. 1 Loveland last week.

“It’s starts up front with our offensive line,” Jergensen said giving a nod to Ralston Valley’s offense line. “They have done a great job this year and did a great job today.”

Jergensen had a touchdown catch tossed by junior Walker Brickle, along with a pair of touchdown passes to junior Caleb Rillos. The University of San Diego baseball commit finished off his night with an 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

“Coaches are just trying to put players in positions to succeed. I think we’re doing a good job with that,” said Jergensen, who split time at quarterback with Brickle in the Mustangs’ non-league finale. “We are getting a lot of guys reps and we’ll be ready for league.”

Senior Brad Roberts got it all started with a 59-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He added a short touchdown run in the second quarter before Jergensen’s pair of touchdown passes to Rillos.

“Athlete guy and we try to get him (Jergensen) the ball if we can in different spots,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd said.

While the offensive was impressive, Ralston Valley’s defense was outstanding. The Mustangs (4-1 record) held the Sabercats (2-3) to minus-25 net yards in the first half.

Fittingly, Ralston Valley senior Phil Donley finished off the scoring with a pick-6 early in the fourth quarter for the final score of the game.

“It was the same way we attack every other week. We schemed off their offense and we do what we do,” Ralston Valley senior Isaac Townsend said. “We executed well and it showed on the scoreboard.”

Loyd gave a lot of credit to his defensive coordinator Greg Francis for the dominating defensive effort and second shutout victory of the season for Ralston Valley.

“Our defensive coach (Francis) did a good job putting that together,” Loyd said of the Mustangs’ defensive scheme. “He mixed it up with not knowing who was coming each time. It worked.”

Ralston Valley heads into the second-half of the regular season next week by opening up play in the 5A Metro West League. The Mustangs face rival and No. 8 Arvada West at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at NAAC.

“(Loveland) was a tough loss and we knew we wanted to bounce back before league to get things on track,” Jergensen said. “We are excited and ready to roll.”

  • Football roundup: Doherty knocks off No. 6 ThunderRidge for first win

Brian Mosley rushed for three touchdowns to help Doherty football pull off a big upset of previously unbeaten and sixth-ranked ThunderRidge on Friday night.

“We knew this was going to be a four-quarter fight, and it came down to the last minute of the game,” Doherty coach Jeff Krumlauf told CHSAANow. “ThunderRidge is truly a top-10 program in the state right now. They have some special kids and some great coaches. For us to be down by 14 and sustain a course was huge for us on a high level.”

The Spartans entered the week winless at 0-4, but had played the second-toughest schedule in the state according to the RPI, with losses to Cherry Creek, Mullen, Pine Creek and Fairview to open the season. All have been ranked in the top-10 at some point this season.

On Friday, Doherty rallied from down 14 to take a 21-14 lead at halftime, thanks to two scores from Mosley, and a defensive fumble return for a TD.

In the end, the Spartans were able to hold off a rally from ThunderRidge, which had started the season 4-0.

    1A: (2) Limon 36, (1) Strasburg 6

Limon led 21-0 early, taking that lead into the break, before Strasburg made it 21-6 after three. But the Badgers only added to the margin in the fourth quarter.

“I thought our kids were really ready to play; I think they were excited to play,” coach Mike O’Dwyer told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “With our win that we had last week against Meeker, our kids got a little bit of confidence playing against a really good team. And obviously Strasburg is also a great team, and I think they were really looking forward to the challenge.”

Hauk Hubbard led Limon with 111 yards rushing and two scores, while Celby Hollenbaugh also had a rushing touchdown. Cannan Bennett also threw a touchdown pass for Limon.

The game was briefly interrupted in the second half when the sprinklers came on.

“You don’t see it too often,” O’Dwyer said. “I think that was the second time in my career I’ve seen that happen.”

Limon limited Strasburg to just 15 yards rushing. Strasburg entered the game averaging close to 200 yards per game.

The Badgers rushed for 291 yards themselves.

    4A/3A: (4A 4) Montrose 21, (3A 2) Palisade 17

    (Tom Hoganson)

MONTROSE — Fourth-ranked Montrose won 21-17 in front of a full house on Friday night.

The game went back-and-forth all night. Palisade grabbed a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but Montrose cut it to 10-7 on a 85-yard interception return for a touchdown from Cauy Boulder with 23 seconds left in the half.

Montrose grabbed its first lead when Cole Simmons scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter, but Palisade responded with a rushing score from quarterback Cam Tucker with 8:34 to play.

The ensuing kickoff went out-of-bounds, giving Montrose the ball at their own 35. They then used a clock-chewing drive to score the winning touchdown with 40 seconds left. Again, it was Simmons who scored, this time on a six-yard rush.

“We beat a good team,” Montrose coach Brett Mertens said afterward. “Cauy Boulden’s interception was big for us. We had some young kids step in and play the line and they did a great job.”

“We had some young kids fill in on the line and they open holes for me,” Simmons said.

  • Big second half for Shedrick powers No. 7 Harrison football over Pueblo Central

    Pueblo Central Harrison football
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — In the first half, Aumiere Shedrick looked like he could barely stand up. The 200-plus-pound running back for Harrison was nursing what turned out to be a hyper-extended knee and without him, it was difficult for the Panthers to find the end zone.

That wasn’t the case in the second half. In the final 24 minutes of the game, Shedrick ran for 190 yards and three touchdowns to power Class 3A No. 7 Harrison to a 20-7 win over Pueblo Central on Friday night.

When Shedrick limped over to the sideline in the first quarter, he wouldn’t have dreamed of putting together such a gutty performance where he finished with 253 total rushing yards.

“Not possible,” he said. “I was going to do what I do best and get a few yards here and there, but I didn’t expect to come away with 250.”

The Panthers (4-0 overall) were getting okay offensive production in the first half, but couldn’t find a way to get the ball into the end zone.

It was the Wildcats (3-1) who struck first, mostly in part to a 24-yard pass from Ryley Roth to Nicholas Krasovic that set up a Nico Martin touchdown run.

Central held the 7-0 into halftime, but momentum quickly shifted to Harrison. Shedrick and quarterback Orlando Westbrook marched the Panthers down the field on the first drive of the half where Shedrick got into the end zone from two yards out.

That score opened the flood gates for the ground game.

“There are nights where we’ve come out and thrown for 350 yards,” Harrison coach Al Melo said. “The way we established our tempo in the first half, I think it wore them down a bit. We were able to establish the running game and when we got that going, they were on their heels.”

An interception from Sergio Alvarado gave the Panthers the ball back and Shedrick, with his one and a half legs, found the end zone again, this time from 20 yards to give Harrison its first lead of the game about halfway through the third quarter.

“He’s a good size kid, man,” Central coach Kris Cotterman said. “He runs hard and did a great job.”

A sliver of hope remained for the Wildcats after Al Ashford muffed a punt to give them the ball back in Harrison territory. But the defense held up and Ashford later made a key interception with 7:47 left in the game to all but ice it.

“He’s a sophomore and he’s a heck of a DB,” Melo said. “We’ve told him all year don’t let the ball bounce because then we give up yards, but that was a long way to run to make a fair catch. Our defense stood up and made some great plays so it didn’t hurt us.”

The Panthers will head south next week to face Pueblo County in their final non-league game. The Wildcats will return home to face Sand Creek in a game where Cotterman looks forward to correcting the mistakes made on Friday.

“We lost the game, but we played with effort,” he said. “That’s how we’re building our program is by fixing mistakes and we’ll just keep playing with effort.”

  • Green Mountain football pulls off upset of Standley Lake

ARVADA — A strong second-half by Green Mountain led a signature win for the Rams’ football program late Friday night.

Class 3A Green Mountain scored 21 unanswered points to start the second half at the North Area Athletic Complex. The run turned a 13-10 halftime deficit against 4A Standley Lake into an eventual 31-19 victory.

“All the credit goes to our players,” Green Mountain’s first-year head coach Jesse German said of the Rams’ 21-0 run in the second half. “We tell them what to do and they do it. We thought if we were going to take that step forward we had to go capitalize and seize our opportunity.”

Junior quarterback Trey Towndrow threw, caught and ran in a touchdowns during the Rams’ key 21-0 run for the Rams. Towndrow threw a 44-yard touchdown to Trey Corkin to open the third quarter.

The Rams used some tricky on a 4th-and-11 play with Darius Padilla throwing back to Towndrow for a 23-yard touchdown. The junior came up big again with an 18-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend Green Mountain’s lead to 31-13.

“We just stuck to our play-calls and our coach (German) called a great game,” Towndrow said. “We just went out there and did our jobs.”

Standley Lake (2-2 record) put in a late touchdown to cut the lead to 31-19, but after the Rams (2-2) recovered an on-side kick Towndrow came up big again. The junior ripped off a 43-yard run to put the Rams on Standley Lake’s 15-yard line.

Green Mountain was able to run out the clock from there.

Standley Lake senior Tyler Williams had a 99-yard kick-off return for a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough for the Gators. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“That felt great,” Towndrow said of his game-sealing run with minutes to play. “We knew we had it secure at that point. That was game.”
Towndrow was in the mix on all four Ram touchdowns in the second straight victory for Green Mountain after an 0-2 start to the season.

“No. 5 (Towndrow) is a special player and a special kid,” German said. “He is a great leader. He leads those guys.”

It was a wild final minute of the first half, which was highlighted by the two teams combining for 18 penalty flags in the opening 24 minutes.

Green Mountain took a 10-7 lead when Towndrow connected with junior Quinn Meinert for a 27-yard touchdown with 42.4 seconds left before halftime. A flag on the play was picked up that allowed the touchdown to stand.

However, Standley Lake responded quickly with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by last year’s Class 4A 400-meter state champion Tyler Williams with 28.8 second left before half. The Gators’ were flagged for sideline interference, but it was only a warning for the first interference infraction.

The Gators missed the extra point to put Standley Lake up 13-10 at halftime.

Standley Lake wraps up its non-league schedule at All-City Stadium next Friday night. The Gators face Denver South before diving into their 4A Jeffco League schedule.

Green Mountain will celebrate its homecoming by facing Falcon in a non-conference game next Thursday at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood.

“This is definitely a program win. It’s going to put that pride back into Green Mountain like when they had when Coach (Don) McGatlin was here,” German said referring to former Green Mountain coach Don McGatlin who guided the Rams to 4A state titles in 1995 and 1999. “We are going to celebrate it, but we have to get onto the next game very soon.”
