  • Ponderosa football goes to the air in win over Dakota Ridge

LAKEWOOD — Good things seemed to happen for Ponderosa when the football went into the air Saturday afternoon at Jeffco Stadium.

The Mustangs pulled off a nice 41-10 road victory against Dakota Ridge in a bit of an unusual style from the normally grind it out physical style of Ponderosa. The Mustangs (2-2 record) had a pair of long touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Jack Hanenburg and also returned two interceptions back for defensive scores in the non-league victory.

“I was a little surprised by that,” Ponderosa senior running back/linebacker and captain Nick Hoff said of Ponderosa’s two touchdown passes. “That is the best our offense has passed the ball the past few weeks.”

Hanenburg threw his a pair of long touchdown passes in the first half. Rare for the Mustangs who had just two touchdown passes in their first three games this season.

The sophomore quarterback connected with sophomore Kolton Miller on a sideline go route for a 76-yard touchdown on the first series of the game.

“That first one it was third down and I just had to put it up there,” Hanenburg said of his touchdown pass to Miller. “I thought it was going to be picked. I looked up on the big (video) screen and he was gone.”

Hanenburg hit junior Joe Hufford for a 68-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter that gave the Mustangs a 14-10 lead. The sophomore admitted he thought the pass over the middle to Hufford was going to get intercepted too.

“Our kid was right there and it just went through his hands,” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz said. “It went from us up 10-7 to down 14-10. That took a lot of momentum away from us.”

The Mustangs tacked on a 47-yard field goal by senior Matt Waid as time expired in the first half to put Ponderosa up 17-10 at halftime. The Mustangs’ defense took over from there.

Hoff and fellow senior Mason Maggio both had pick-6 touchdowns in the third quarter to extend the Mustangs’ lead to 34-10. Hoff intercepted Dakota Ridge quarterback Ben Biffinger and returned it 55 yards for the touchdown.

“I blitzed and saw the quarterback drop back,” Hoff said. “He threw it right to me and I took it to the house.”

Maggio picked off Dakota Ridge back-up quarterback and returned it 40 yards for another defensive score. Hanenburg capped off the victory with a 9-yard touchdown run for the lone score in the fourth quarter as Ponderosa scored 34 unanswered points to close out the game.

Ponderosa has another Saturday afternoon game next week. The Mustangs host Vista Ridge at EchoPark Stadium in Parker.

“We are on to next week now,” Hoff said. “We’ll celebrate this for one night, but its just another week in the season.”

The highlights for Dakota Ridge came in the second quarter. The Eagles (1-3) actually took a 10-7 lead before halftime. Dakota Ridge got a special team touchdown on a blocked punt by Eagles’ junior James Hess that was recovered by sophomore Colin Stuhr in the end zone.

Sophomore Max Hart kicked a 35-yard field goal for the Eagles to give Dakota Ridge its first lead of the game 10-7 with 2:31 left before halftime.

“At this point winning the league is probably our only chance to get in (to the playoffs),” Woitalewicz admitted after the third loss of the season. “Winning the league is what we’ve talked about from Day 1.”

Dakota Ridge is back in action at Jeffco Stadium next Friday night. The Eagles will celebrate homecoming against Vista Peak. The Bison (4-0) have been playing well, having outscored their four opponents 152-32 in an undefeated start to the season.

“Homecoming will maybe be a good band-aid to get them excited and energized,” Woitalewicz said.

The Eagles open play in the newly formed 4A Jeffco League the following week against Bear Creek on Oct. 4 at Jeffco Stadium.

  • 2A No. 1 Crested Butte boys soccer willing to take on all challenges

It feels like a long time ago that Crested Butte last won a boys soccer playoff game. The reality is it happened just four ago.

The Titans advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs with a 3-1 win over Manitou Springs, but were eliminated the next round by Salida.

It’s the story of their postseason experience. Getting there has never been a traditional problem, it’s making a run that has proven to be difficult.

“We’ve always had a rough time in the 3A playoffs,” coach Than Acuff said. “We’d make it to the tournament more often than not, but we’d end up playing some front range powerhouses and just get throttled. We had a really hard time getting past that first round.”

    Fast-forward to today.

Crested Butte is primed for a playoff run in the new 2A class and is played with poise and experience that is needed when it comes to playing great soccer.

“We have a couple of things in our favor,” Acuff said. “We have a senior in net, Slater Weil, and he’s been in a starting varsity keeper since his sophomore year. That’s always a huge help for a program who wants to have success. And every now and then, especially with these small schools, you just have an alignment of stars and this group of kids really gets along. There’s a huge team cohesion going on this season. We usually have that, but this year just seems a little more special.”

    Crested Butte boys soccer
    (Lydia Stern/Crested Butte News)

That win over Telluride on Sept. 14 was good enough for the Titans (7-1-2 overall) to take over the top spot in this week’s 2A soccer rankings. The lone loss this season was to 3A’s Salida, a team that should battle with the likes of Atlas Prep and Colorado Springs Christian for a league championship.

They played 3A No. 9 Delta and 2A No. 3 Ridgway to ties, but it was the win against Telluride that really gave the Titans a physical and emotional boost.

“That was a big game for us,” senior captain Tommy Lineman said. “That was our homecoming game. I think that was definitely the game where we knew we can compete with these good teams out there in 2A. We also know these new few games with Alamosa, Ridgway and Telluride in Telluride are going to be the deciding games to see who’s the best.”

Linehan is another reason the Titans are playing at a high level. He is currently tied for second in 2A with 10 goals scored. He’s flanked by Dagan Schwartz and Carlos Franco who have each scored five.

And although the stars have aligned for the Titans, it’s something that has been in the making with this group of kids for some time.

“As a team, we have some great chemistry,” Linehan said. “We’ve played with each other for a very long time now and that’s starting to show. The past couple of years we’ve increased our games as we’ve worked together, and everyone has put in the effort to get better.”

Better to the point that they’re talking about going further in the state playoffs than any Crested Butte team before them.

The 2A season will end where the other classes do, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Titans would love to get to that point, but they don’t want to get too far ahead of themselves.

“We just try to go game by game,” Linehan said. “The captains and I have been telling the team that we just have to take it one game at a time and if we do what we need to do in that game and focus on our job for that game, we’ll win and make it to that overall goal that we have.”

  • No. 4 Pomona football back on track with win over Highlands Ranch

ARVADA — Pomona coach Jay Madden doesn’t have an issue with two-game losing streaks, but he was relieved when the Panthers’ didn’t drop a third straight Thursday night.

“We schedule these hard games to try to find out something about yourself, but you have to learn from those mistakes,” Madden said after Pomona’s 42-14 victory at the North Area Athletic Complex against Highlands Ranch. “We learned from those two games. We came out tonight and played really well.”

Pomona, No. 4 in the Class 5A football CHSAANow.com rankings, suffered back-to-back losses to No. 2 Valor Christian and No. 1 Cherry Creek the previous two weeks. The Panthers actually suffered back-to-back losses last season on the road to their Class 5A state championship title.

Highlands Ranch took an early 7-0 lead with an opening 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by junior Kole Lundquist.

“We started off slow. We had to adjust some things,” Pomona senior linebacker Javier Crespin said. “We came back, found a groove and played well.”

The Panthers’ defense didn’t allow the Falcons to score on their next seven possessions. On the other side, Pomona’s offense scored at will. The Panthers scored 42 unanswered points from late in the first quarter until early in the fourth quarter. The Panthers’ offense scored on their first four consecutive drives.

“Our goal is to move the ball every single series,” Madden said. “We want to give our defense rest and get the other team’s defense tired. We let our skilled guys do what they do.”

Pomona senior quarterback Riley Welsch hooked up with senior Billy Pospisil on an 8-yard touchdown pass to tie things up 7-7 before the end of the first quarter. Welsch connected with senior David Ross on touchdowns of 23 and 36 yards, along with a short touchdown run by senior Dominic Bettini put the Panthers up 28-7 at halftime.

Pomona senior Javier Crespin (44) knocks down a pass from Highlands Ranch sophomore Jake Rubley. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“The offense was rolling,” Crespin said. “We just try to get the ball back to them anyway we can.”

Pospisil opened the second half with a bang. It took the senior 16 seconds to return the opening second-half kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 35-7.

Bettini, a move-in transfer from Highlands Ranch to Pomona, scored his second touchdown run against his former school toward the end of the third quarter to put the lead to 42-7.

“It was really hard leaving,” said Bettini, who was greeted and talked with several Falcon players on the field after the Panthers’ win. “My ,om got a new job down here (in the Pomona area). It was hard to transition.”

Bettini rushed for over 1,600 yards last season for the Falcons.

“It’s something awesome to be in this offense,” Bettini said. “I watched them last year in the state game. It’s so awesome to be out there with them and be a part of this Panther community now.”

Madden has a solid one-two punch at running back with Bettini and senior Therious Robison moving into the second half of the regular season.

“I’m happy for him (Bettini). He had a good week of practice,” Madden said. “He got a little banged up in Florida, so last week was really the first time he had that burst of speed again. You could see it tonight and we need that.”

Pomona gets in conference play going in the 5A Metro West against Lakewood at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 back at the NAAC.

“It’s onto the real business,” Madden said of starting league play.

The Falcons (1-4 record) has also played a brutal non-league schedule. Highlands Ranch was preseason No. 10, but suffered losses to Eaglecrest, Grandview, Columbine and Pomona — all teams ranked in the top-7.

Highlands Ranch begins its 5A Metro South League play next Friday night against Rock Canyon.

  • No. 3 Discovery Canyon football grounds No. 4 Pueblo East

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Without Kain Medrano, the Pueblo East Eagles were unable to fly. And when the focus turned to the ground, Discovery Canyon was nothing short of dominant in a 52-24 win over the Eagles Thursday night at District 20 Stadium.

Kevin Pasion, Zach Anderson and Marshall Pike combined to rush for over 330 yards to completely wear down the East defense and come away with arguably the team’s most impressive win of the 2018 season.

“We always want to do that,” Thunder coach Shawn Mitchell said. “Obviously, we didn’t expect that kind of game tonight. I think them not having Kain made a difference for them. That’s the only way I can explain that. I didn’t expect this and certainly not off their body of work.”

That body of work lifted the Eagles (3-2 overall) to the No. 2 team in the Class 3A football rankings a few weeks ago. Now, they’re riding a two-game losing streak with a much-needed bye on the horizon.

The Thunder (5-0) wasted no time in building momentum and taking the lead. They forced a turnover on downs on East’s first possession of the game then Pasion got them on the board with a 47-yard touchdown run. The next possession it was Pike breaking one off, his going for 77, to put Discovery Canyon up 14-0.

Pike added a second touchdown and then Griffin Anderson drilled a 45-yard field goal to push the lead to 24-0 in what felt like a flash of lightning.

“Every game in the first quarter, we get crazy momentum,” Pike said. “It fuels us and just keep going.”

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Eagles quarterback Luc Andrada finally connected on a big play through air late in the second quarter as he found Kaden Bowman for a 52-yard touchdown pass.

But it was clear Medrano hanging on the sideline in a UCLA sweatshirt had an adverse affect on Andrada.

“We can’t use that as an excuse,” Eagles coach Andy Watts said. “Did it hurt the team that we were without him? Yeah. Absolutely. He’s one of the best players in the state, but we can’t use that as an excuse. We have to rise to the occasion and step up and win the football game and we didn’t do that.”

Medrano said before the game that he was suffering from a fractured collarbone. He is expected to return to the Eagles lineup in two weeks for the start of league play.

But he could only watch Thursday’s game on the sideline, eventually by himself on one knee. He’s seen this sight before. The one where the Eagles take on the Thunder in the regular season and head back to Pueblo empty-handed.

It’s a game that the Discovery Canyon players look forward to annually. They also enjoy the success that they’ve had against East in the regular season.

“We try to look at every game as the same, but we can’t help it,” Anderson said. “This is Pueblo East. This is a rival. We always play against. This is always one you circle on the calendar.”

Anderson also went 6-for-7 through the air for 95 yards.

The previous playoff meetings between the two teams are a different story. When the stakes become win or go home, it has been the Eagles who have emerged successful. And Mitchell is among those who knows that those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it.

“Now I just start thinking about what happens seven weeks from now,” he said. “That’s us and we’ve repeated it four times at every level you possibly can. If we see them again, we have to take a look at what we do, what they do and obviously the impact that someone like Kain could make.”

For now he and the Thunder will move on to Littleton, the next team on their schedule. A second game against East is a bridge they’ll cross when they get to it. And judging by the result of Thursday, they’ll have every bit of confidence that they can safely navigate that bridge.

    Pueblo South at Palmer Ridge

    Time: 7 p.m. kick

    Station: XTRA Sports 1300

On the call: Ryan Kaufman (Play by play), Ryan Pelton (Color)

Kaufman on the matchup: Tonight is a matchup between two defending state champions that are in very different situations. Palmer Ridge has their three headed offensive monster of Ty Evans, Anthony Roberson, and Raef Ruel but has suffered a couple losses to teams ranked in the top 5 of their respective classifications.

In those losses, Evans has thrown a combined 8 interceptions, so if this team is going to defend its 3A title, they need to get a little more balance offensively to take the pressure off of Evans

Pueblo South meanwhile has had to replace nearly all of their key offensive contributors from their 4A State Championship team of 2017. In their 42-41 overtime loss to Discovery Canyon last week, Junior QB Logan Petit made great strides in his development, throwing for 240 yards and 3 TDs. This is a team that has gotten better each game and should look even better in a game that figures to be a shootout.

Romero on the matchup: This is a pretty cool volleyball and football doubleheader, with all 4 teams ranked and all 4 teams undefeated entering the week. On the volleyball side Otis has 3 different hitters with 50 or more kills, while Stratton/Liberty hasn’t quite put up the same attacking numbers.

On paper the football game has all the signs of a classic six-man scorefest with both teams averaging more than 60 points per contest.

    8-man: Haxtun at Merino

    Time: 7:30 p.m. kick

    Station: 94.5 The Ranch

    On the call: Ben Blecha

Blecha on the matchup: Both teams are coming off a loss. It’s Merino’s league opener while Haxtun lost to Dayspring. Really can’t count out the loser but it’s going to be hard to secure a playoff spot for either team, especially for Haxtun, in the Plains if this game isn’t won. I fully expect a hard hitting game between the two long time rivals.

    (2A 7) Salida at Cedaredge

    Time: 7 p.m. kick

    Station: The Peak 92.3

    On the call: Caleb Burggraaf

Burggraaf on the matchup: The Spartans are coming off of their second shut out win of the season over their rivals in Buena Vista, and rode a strong performance from Vince DeLeo who rushed for nearly 200 yards and 4 scores in the game. This week though, the Spartans face their longest road trip of the season to this point as they look to go 5-0 in non-league action.

Defense has been the key for Salida so far on the year, and expect them to use that to get things going in the right direction again in Cedaredge.

    1A: (10) Buena Vista at (6)Centauri

    Time: 7 p.m.

    Station: Eagle Country 104.1

On the call: Jimmy Doogan (Play by play), Len Gates (Color)

Caleb Burggraaf on the matchup: For Buena Vista, the loss last week isn’t one they are thinking about too much. The goal instead is to finish their non-league schedule above 500 after last year’s team failed to win a non-league game. To do that, they have to take on a Centauri team which is coming off of an appearance in the state championship game.

Buena Vista will look to again assert their offense in this one, using speed and timing as well as smart play from quarterback Parker Johnson to earn the win. Don’t sleep on the Demon’s defense either, as the defensive line for Buena Vista will get some pressure on the Falcons quarterback.

3A: (8) Holy Family at Roosevelt

    Time: 7 p.m. kick

    Station: KFKA 1310

On the call: Clark Johnson (Play by play), Mike Danson (Color)

Preps director Tanner Schwindt on the matchup: The true question is if Roosevelt can get through an extremely difficult first 4 games with a win. This contest doesn’t get any easier as Holy Family is another quality opponent.
