Football radio: Salida and Bayfield battle for league title as small schools wrap regular season

(Ryan Kosley/CHSAANow.com) The regular season comes to an end for Class 5A as well as 6-man, 8-man, 1A and 2A. There are some great games that can be found on radio signals throughout Colorado.

2A: (4) Bayfield at (5) Salida
Time: 7 p.m. kick
Station: The Peak 92.3
On the call: Caleb Burggraaf (Play by play), Dan R. (sideline)
Burggraaf on the matchup: It comes down to the game most thought it would for the league title. The Spartans defense has been the force to be reckoned with, compiling 80 tackles for a loss this year and holding Cortez to only 9 yards of offense in their second shutout of the season this year. The Wolverines come into the game after a struggle in their rivalry game against Pagosa Springs, but still played well, particularly on the defensive side themselves, and their D-line has been a very strong unit and the Salida offensive line will have their hands full throughout the night. Expect a defensive battle between the two in this top-five matchup in the RPI.

6-man: (1) Stratton/Liberty at (2) Kit Carson
Game time: 7pm kick
Station: KAT Country 98.3 FM
On the call: Marc Romero
Romero on the matchup: This matchup has it all…for fans of offense Stratton/Liberty averages 65 points per game, while Kit Carson puts up just over 62 points per game. For fans of defense the Knighted Eagles give up just over 16 per contest, while the Wildcats check in at just over 9 per game, through the last 2 weeks Kit Carson has given up double figures for the only times this season. The big question for this game is simple though, can Kit Carson stop the Stratton/Liberty rushing game that averages 306 yards per game?

1A: Monte Vista at Buena Vista
Time: 7 p.m. kick
Station: Eagle Country 104
One the call: Jimmy Doogan (Play by play), Bob Marken (Color)
Burggraaf on the matchup: It all comes down to one game for both Buena Vista and Monte Vista, as both are hoping to make the postseason. BV is in good shape, sitting at 11th in the RPI while Monte Vista is on the bubble needing a win. If the Demons are going to win, they need a strong performance from their defense as their offense has been streaky this season. Defensively though, their youth has stepped up and has really improved on the edges.

Golden boys soccer pounces early in playoff win over Fort Morgan
ARVADA — Golden didn’t waste any time Wednesday night on getting its first boys soccer playoff in five years.
The No. 11-seeded Demons defeated No. 22 Fort Morgan 4-0 in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament at the North Area Athletic Complex.
“It feels great. My freshman year was actually the first year we didn’t make playoffs in a long time,” Golden senior Douglass Beeman said. “It’s been a goal of mine since freshman year to get here (playoffs) and get a win.”

Golden senior Douglass Beeman scored on a penalty kick in the 13rd minute to give the Demons a 2-0 lead against Fort Morgan. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Golden senior Aydan Roth scored 48 seconds into the first half to get an early lead and it was all Demons from there on out.
“Usually I get the ball off my foot quick to another striker,” said Roth, who had just one goal during the regular season. “I turned and saw all the space. I felt it was the time to shoot it. I couldn’t believe it.”
Roth would add his second goal of the night in the 70th minute to give Golden a 4-0 lead and put the game away.
“It was pretty crazy. This is my first year on varsity. I’ve been working toward this for four years,” Roth said. “The adrenaline from it is insane. I’m glad I was able to help my team and get us to where we are.”
Where Golden (13-3 record) are headed now is Pueblo. The Demons travel to Pueblo in the second round Tuesday, Oct. 30. Golden will face No. 6 Pueblo Centennial (13-1-2). The Bulldogs defeated Montrose 2-1 in overtime in a first-round game Tuesday night.
“On to Pueblo (Centennial) now,” Beeman said.
Beeman gave the Demons a 2-0 lead with a penalty kick goal in the 13th minute. Golden sophomore Daniel Erger was fouled in the Mustangs’ goalie box to draw a penalty kick.

Fort Morgan senior Fabian Cervantes, left, looks for some room as Golden junior Nate Thompson (2) closes in. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “Daniel did a great job getting into the box and drawing the foul,” Beeman said. “Last year I missed a PK. It was pretty bad. I really focused on that during the off-season. It feels great to put one away in the playoffs.”
Senior Aydan Provencio put in the Demons’ third first-half goal off an assist from Ethan Toon in the 33rd minute to give Golden a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime.
Golden’s last postseason win was in 2013. The Demons’ previous three playoff games were all 1-0 losses. A second round playoff loss in 2013, along with first-round defeats in 2014 and 2017.
“I think most of the boys were calm. I was calm,” Beeman said about the mood coming into the playoff opener. “We know how we can play and just focused on our game.”
Golden, conference champion for the first time since 2007, was the lone 4A Jeffco team to advance to the second-round next week. Standley Lake, Evergreen, Green Mountain and Littleton all suffered road losses Tuesday night.

Cherry Creek field hockey rallies to beat Colorado Academy, reach title game

(Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com) DENVER — Down a goal early, Cherry Creek field hockey rallied to score three unanswered goals and secure a spot in field hockey’s championship game.
The Bruins, top-seeded and undefeated, beat No. 4 Colorado Academy 3-1 at All-City Stadium on Thursday. Ella Pratt, Isabella Balbona and Kristen Kelley scored for Cherry Creek.
This marks Cherry Creek’s first appearance in the title game since 2015, and seventh overall. The Bruins (16-0-1) will try to win their first title since 2007.
Colorado Academy (12-4-1) started the scoring late in the first half when Remy Sherman poked home a goal following a short corner attempt, and a scramble in front of the goal. The initial shot from Lauren McKee had been deflected by Katherine Merrifield on its way in.
But Cherry Creek’s Ella Pratt scored a crucial goal with just 50 seconds left in the first half, after the Bruins had secured a short corner of her own. Pratt’s shot deflected off a defender’s stick, soared high into the air, and caught the top left corner of the net to make it 1-1.
It stayed that way at halftime, and the Bruins came out charging the second half.
Isabella Balbona scores for the Bruins in close to give them a 2-1 lead less than than four minutes in, and Kristen Kelley gave them a two-goal lead 10 minutes after that.
The two teams played in the regular season finale, a 1-0 Cherry Creek win.
Cherry Creek will play Regis Jesuit in the championship on Thursday. The Raiders beat Kent Denver in the semifinals.
