  • After two runner-up finishes, Niwot gymnastics breaks through for state title in Class 4A

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

THORNTON — Gaius Sallustius Crispus, an Ancient Roman historian, didn’t have Niwot gymnastics in mind when he said, “Harmony makes small things grow, lack of it makes great things decay.”

But the phrase certainly applies to this group. The Cougars only feature 15 athletes, eight of which competed during Friday’s opening round of the Class 4A state gymnastics championships.

That was all Niwot needed to finish atop the team standings for the first time since 2015 as they garnered 181.500 points. Green Mountain, featuring all-around state champion Emily Graham (37.025 points), was the runner-up with 179.950.

The small seeds of a meager Niwot roster, only in number of entries, blossomed into a sturdy force, capping the program’s 2018 aspirations with a gold trophy.

“With low numbers, they become super close,” coach Marisa Purcell said. “They become a lot closer than they do when you have a lot more gymnasts.”

The essence of this group is the alliance they have with one another. Although plenty of teams create deep ties, the Cougars are even closer. Donned in shimmering green and black colors, the gymnasts come from seven different schools in the St. Vrain Valley School District.

“You’re always proud to bring it home,” Purcell beamed. “It’s special for them to not only represent Niwot, but to represent the district as well.”

It proved to be a perfect collaborative effort for the group, who was looking to climb to the peak of 4A after back-to-back second place showings to Elizabeth and Green Mountain.

In some ways, unity can only take a team so far though. For teams with realistic championship hopes, ability matters just as much.

Niwot is plenty capable, flashing both their physical and psychological strengths with a bundle of points in the floor exercise (Grace Stephenson first, Lindsay Chohon second), balance beam (Hattie Katachis second, Taylor Green Becker third), and vault and uneven bars (two in top four of each event).

“We worked really hard this off-season to get some bigger skills and get the right routines down in order to be contenders here at state,” Purcell said.

During last week’s regional meet, Chohon and company gave a glimpse of what was in store Friday with sweeps of at least the top three spots in every event. Chohon, a senior, was at the forefront of that effort, bettering all competitors in the floor exercise, balance beam, and vault.

It was still a little bittersweet Friday for the Cougars though as Chohon finished runner-up for the second time in a row, a fraction of a point behind Graham in the all-around competition — 37.025-37.000.

“She’s one special girl to me,” her coach said, still plenty proud of Niwot’s top competitor. “I’ve coached her since she was 10, so we’ve been able to travel this journey together. She was voted captain this year by her teammates and led them.”

The skillful group (Katachis was third in all-around) lifted Niwot to a sixth team championship (1991, 1994, 2000, 2001, 2015, 2018). They are now tied with Loveland for the fourth-most titles in the Colorado prep ranks.

The school also collected plenty of hardware at the state cross country meet six days ago as Cruz Culpepper and Layla Roebke won individual crowns, and the girls team conquered 4A.

As for Graham, an evening that was capped with a title was almost stalled from the get-go.

“Going into this week, we thought I had a torn ACL and meniscus,” she said. “We got results back yesterday and nothing’s torn, it’s something else.”

The senior, with third and fourth place showings on her resume from the past two seasons, endured the pain, especially in vault.

“All season I’ve just been doing one vault,” the newly crowned 4A queen said. “Tonight I decided to go for a second time and on my second one I got a 9.4. That was the best score I got all year.

“Down the vault runway, it hurt pretty bad but I fought through it.”

Graham finished second in the event, which added to a runner-up score in uneven bars and a fourth place finish in balance beam. As a result, she became Green Mountain’s first all-around winner since Melanie Zaharias (5A, 1998).

Humble in victory, Graham was just as pleased with Green Mountain’s overall performance.

“We pulled together as a team so much,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better last meet. We have a good history with the coaches having state championships and I was on the championship team my sophomore year. Just adding to that is exciting.

“We also have a really talented young group of girls.”

  • Chatfield football helps a rival, cements playoff spot with win

LAKEWOOD — Chatfield football had an unlikely group cheering on the Chargers during Friday night’s regular-season finale at Jeffco Stadium.

Despite being rivals schools separated by 2.4 miles, a number of Dakota Ridge players and coaches were on hand rooting for Chatfield to come away with a victory against Bear Creek.

The Chargers delivered with a 44-11 victory over the Bears to likely send the Chatfield and Dakota Ridge to the postseason.

“I texted (Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz) after last night and told him we were going to go get this one for him,” Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin said. “We were confident about this one.”

A Chatfield win concluded what was a wild race for the Class 4A Jeffco League title.

Chatfield (7-3, 4-1) and Dakota Ridge (6-4, 4-1) finished tied for the conference title. However, Dakota Ridge’s head-to-head victory over Chatfield gives the Eagles the tiebreaker and automatic bid to the 16-team state tournament that begins next week.

“We just had to take care of our own part and make sure we made the playoffs,” Chatfield senior quarterback Zack Yanda said. “We didn’t mind what happens outside of us.”

The Chargers are likely safe to make the postseason field too. Chatfield was No. 12 in the RPI standings heading into Friday’s action.

“We are in a good place,” said McGatlin, who will now wait until the 4A state tournament bracket is released on CHSAANow.com on Sunday. “We are in the playoffs and I believe we’ll have a decent seed.”

Chatfield held a 20-3 lead at halftime against Bear Creek. The Chargers turned a pair of Bear Creek turnovers on special teams into 10 points in the first half. The Bears fumbled a kickoff and punt return.

“Our special teams played a big role in tonight’s game in getting the momentum,” Chatfield junior linebacker Colin Simcox said.

Chatfield senior Garrett Martin scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to open up the scoring and cap off a 15-play drive that chewed up half of the first quarter. Martin’s mother passed away earlier in the week and McGatlin wanted to get the senior linebacker the chance to get in the end zone to honor his mother.

“The first thought was we’ll get him in the end zone,” McGatlin said. “Right away it was able to happen with us getting down to the 1-yard line. It was like his mother was looking down on us. We really feel for his family.”

While getting the victory was on the mind of the Chargers. The biggest sign of emotion for Chatfield was teammates greeting Martin after his touchdown.

“That was the best part of the night,” Yanda said of Martin finishing out the Chargers’ opening drive with his first career touchdown. “He is our brother. We all have his back. We love him. That is what made our day today.”

Chatfield’s second touchdown was an 18-yard touchdown pass from Yanda to senior Carson Lucas. It looked like Yanda would be out for the season after suffering a shoulder injury, but the senior has been back for a couple of weeks now. The Chargers have scored 82 points the past two games after their loss to Dakota Ridge on Oct. 18.

Senior Charlie Wildermuth ended up kicking a trio of field goals for the Chargers. Back-up quarterback Jack Wells and junior running back Daniel Nickels both had long touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

“We got in, that’s all that matters and we’ll make the most of it,” Yanda said about the postseason.

The lone scores for Bear Creek was a 32-yard field goal by senior Axel Gonzalez in the first half and a 22-yard touchdown pass from senior Nate Madrid to senior George Martinez in the fourth quarter.

Bear Creek (4-6, 3-2) needed a win to get into the big dance. The Bears were No. 24 in RPI, but if they finished tied with Dakota Ridge for the 4A Jeffco League title Bear Creek would have the tiebreaker thanks to a head-to-head victory over the Eagles to take the automatic bid.

The Bears started the season 0-4, but won 4-of-5 games to make their case for the postseason bid. Bear Creek coach Zach Morris had his team overcome the loss of starting quarterback Isaiah Romero in Week 7, along with missing Martinez for a handful of games.

“Proud of the boys,” Morris said. “They battled to the end.”

  • No. 8. Pueblo West football uses trickery, ground game to beat No. 10 Rampart for league title

PUEBLO WEST — In order to come away with a league championship, Pueblo West was going to have to slow down the top-ranked rushing attack in Class 4A. Throwing in a few trick plays wouldn’t hurt either.

The No. 8 Cyclones did just that and got a big second half out of running back Kyle Jameson to beat No. 10 Rampart 28-21 and come away with the Pikes Peak title.

Jameson ran for three touchdowns in the second half, but it was his throwing touchdown in the second that initially got West (8-2 overall, 5-0 Pikes Peak) on the board. The trick plays were something that coach Clint Buderus knew he was going to need to take down a tough, physical Rampart team.

“We’ve been saving them and we haven’t had to use them,” Buderus said. “There’s a few more in the book still, but we had to use everything we had tonight.”

Cade Cormaney ran in for a short touchdown to put Rampart up 7-0 in the closing minutes of the first quarter. After Jameson’s touchdown pass tied things up, Chris Yoo punched one in to give the Rams (7-3, 4-1) the lead once again before halftime.

In the second half, the Cyclones leaned heavily on Jameson. His first rushing touchdown of the night cut the lead to 14-13, but the Cyclones botched the snap on the extra point and couldn’t tie the game.

But the defense stepped up and got West the ball back. They went right back to Jameson who found the end zone once again.

“I’m always leaning on my offensive linemen,” Jameson said. “We never look at the score, we never think about it, we just try to play and drive the ball down the field.”

West took a full touchdown lead after running a flea-flicker to convert on the two-point try. Buderus could only laugh when thinking about it.

“We’ve used those for a few years now (in La Junta),” he said. “We just needed it and we executed it.”

The Rams were able to tie the game in the fourth quarter on Yoo’s second rushing touchdown of the night. But Jameson and the Cyclones offense was able to answer with 4:31 left.

The Rams had one final chance to drive the field and either tie or take the lead. With just under two to play Cormaney took a shot at the end zone, but Cyclones cornerback Tyler Declusion was able to position himself in front and come down with the interception.

“That’s the game, that’s the title, go get it,” Declusion said. “It’s not going into that guy’s hands, it’s going in mine.”

The Cyclones are now assured a spot in the 4A playoffs. The Rams were sitting right on the cusp of the cutoff line in the RPI ratings and will await the release of the 4A bracket on Sunday.

Although the Cyclones were likely in the playoffs regardless, Buderus still stressed the importance of this game to his guys.

“We want to host,” he said.

With a league championship in hand, they may have gotten their wish.

  • No. 4 Montrose football finishes off regular season at 9-1

    (Tom Hoganson)

Fourth-ranked Montrose beat Aurora Central 43-16 to finish the regular season 9-1.

Montrose started fast with two first quarter touchdowns, one on a pass from Emmert Kastendieck to Chris Eckerman and one by Chris Eckerman from one yard out.

In the second, Montrose scored again as Eckerman scored from one yard out. Osvaldo Portillo kicked a 28-yard field goal to make it 21-3. Then, Sam Hartman and Josh Kasamis scored to make it 35-3 in favor of Montrose at halftime.

Montrose’s offense didn’t cool off in the third quarter, when Elijah Evans added another score to make it 43-3.

Aurora Central’s Tavonne Burden scored on a 60-yard run and it was 43-10 after three quarters.

The Trojans scored a late touchdown to make the final 43-16.

“We played well,” Coach Brett Mertens said. “I like the way we came out, other than the first-quarter turnovers which we need to clean up. I am happy for the seniors and we are ready for the playoffs.”

“We talked about the turnovers,” Emmert Kastendieck said. “We played well together. These guys have a lot of heart and I love playing with them. We stuck together.”

Montrose will now turn its attention to the postseason. The Class 4A brackets will release on Sunday.
