  • Riverdale Ridge makes its debut at the 2018 state spirit compeition

DENVER — The first time often doesn’t go as planned, but that didn’t bother the Riverdale Ridge High School cheer team.

The Ravens did it. They got onto the floor of the Denver Coliseum and they competed in front of a big audience and showed that they will be a part of the state spirit competition for a long time. It didn’t matter if they stumbled, it didn’t matter if they fell.

By the end of the competition, the girls got up and finished their routine with pride.

“We had fun and that’s the most important thing right now,” Jordan Trjuillo said. “We showed who Riverdale was. Even though we fell a couple of times I felt we did pretty good as freshmen and sophomores competing as a varsity team.”

The school opened its doors for the 2018-19 school year meaning that every athletic team is new to its respective field of play. The cheer team is no different, but they craved the opportunity to compete at state, even if it was one of the more nerve-racking things they have done all year.

“It really was,” Trinity Vanderbeek said. “We practiced a lot, but this was our first big competition.”

Of the four teams that advanced to finals, the Ravens were not included. There will be time for that for future teams. Coach Brian Franca knows that every strong program has to start somewhere.

When he speaks to future teams about competing at state and what the goals are for each girl, he will always mention the team that competed on Friday and how they were the girls that started everything for the cheer program.

“This is the group that set the stage,” he said. “They built the traditions, they built the program and they established who we want to be. And we’re going to build on that the next year and the year after.”

Even when talking about the future, he couldn’t contain his pride for the present. Seeing his team hit the floor and go through their routine is an experience he’ll never forget.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “They’re young, just freshmen and sophomores, and this was their first time competing. They didn’t do any other competition besides this so just them representing Riverdale Ridge and being out there was awesome.”

And once they got out and there and got into their routine, that helped calm the nerves. They felt more at home and more in the moment as they started performing.

“I felt more calm and collected, because we’ve practiced so much that I can just flow through and be able to do it,” Vanderbeek said.

Looking ahead, they’ll be back next year. The team will be more experienced and ready to take on the atmosphere that comes with competing at the Coliseum.

And if nothing else, they understand that they’ve done something for their school that no one else gets to do. They got to be the first Ravens to compete on the biggest stage of the year. That’s an experience that no one can take away from them and it’s something that future teams will talk about down the road.

“It’s been crazy because it’s our first cheer team and everyone’s hoping we do well,” Trujillo said. “They just wanted us to show who Riverdale was. They didn’t care if we hit or won, just represent the school.”

Riverdale Ridge wasn’t the only new team competing at the event. DSST: Byers also stepped on the floor for the first and also figures to be a regular for future competitions.

  • Dakota Ridge girls basketball topples 4A’s No. 2 Evergreen

EVERGREEN — The blueprint every Class 4A girls basketball team might want to take notice of was drawn up Friday night at Evergreen High School.

Class 5A Jeffco’s Dakota Ridge used constant full-court pressure defense and drained a few key 3-pointers in the second half to defeat the two-time defending 4A state champion Evergreen Cougars.

“We’ve been getting more shots that our opponents, but we just are getting the ball in,” Dakota Ridge coach Diane Thompson said of the Eagles’ shooting issues. “I figure if I can come up with a defensive scheme that’s our best chance to win.”

The Eagles defeated Evergreen 38-26. The Cougars are currently ranked No. 2 in the CHSAANow.com 4A girls basketball poll and the loss ended a 12-game winning streak dating back to last season.

“We knew this team was going to be hard,” Evergreen senior Claudia Dillon said after the loss. “We prepared as much as we could, but obviously not enough. It showed how young our team is. They are all really talented, but they just have to control the ball and do their stuff. We need them.”

Turnovers plagued the Cougars throughout the game. Evergreen was held to just eight points at halftime. The Cougars limited to less than 30 points for the first time since Dillon walked onto the court for Evergreen nearly four years ago.

“After winning state the last two years it has put a target on us and on my back,” said Dillon, who was the lone Cougar in double-digits with 12 points. “We knew this was going to happen. We just have to be a little more prepared for it.”

One of Evergreen’s signatures over the past several years was a bevy of guards who were able to manage the court on both ends of the court. However, the Cougars graduated all of their experienced backcourt players last year.

“I saw a lot of deer in the headlights,” Evergreen coach Maddy Hornecker admitted. “I expected to see that given how fresh and new our team is to varsity basketball. I think it’s good to see this early. We know we are going to see this for the rest of the season now.”

Thompson focused her team on containing the 6-foot-2 Dillon and hopefully getting a handful of key baskets at the right time. That’s precisely what happened late in the third quarter.

Junior Emily Doolittle hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute of the third quarter to extend Dakota Ridge’s lead to 29-14 heading to the final quarter.

“We just had to pull it out,” Doolittle said of her two huge 3-pointers. “I felt like we were on a bit of a downward spiral and we had to get the energy back.”

Junior Taylor Legault, who finished with a team-high 12 points, along with senior Sydney Daniels each had a key bucket in the fourth quarter when Evergreen was trying to make a run. Senior Maggie Hawley buried a 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter that brought back the Eagles’ lead back to 15 points.

“Tonight a few shots fell. (Doolittle) hit a couple of big 3s,” Thompson said. “We attacked the basket and got their bigs (Dillon sisters) in foul trouble.”

Junior Hayley Dillon got on track offensively in the second half for the Cougars, but fouled out with 4:38 left in the fourth quarter.

Dakota Ridge (2-3 record) is back on the court next week in a tournament that the Eagles co-host with Cherry Creek. The Eagles are scheduled to face Mesa Ridge at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12.

“We just want to keep getting better,” Thompson said. “It’s early in the season. We are growing and we have injuries. If we get wins along the way it’s just bonus.”

Evergreen (2-1) will regroup after suffering its first loss with Hornecker at the helm. The 2012 Ralston Valley High School graduate was an assistant coach the past two years at Evergreen. She took over the head coaching duties after Amy Bahl announced she was stepping away from the program before the birth of her third daughter.

Bahl coached the Cougars to the last three Class 4A girls basketball state championship game. After losing the title game in 2016, Evergreen won back-to-back state championship titles in 2017 and 2018.

“It’s been interesting I’d say,” Hornecker said of the first few weeks of the season. “A lot pressure for sure and I feel that, but I have the same expectations. Being under Amy for two years and during the summer I feel like we’ve transitioned well. There are still kinks that we have to figure out here and there.”

Evergreen has its first road game at Mullen at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12. It should be a good test for the Cougars. Mullen (3-1 record) is ranked No. 6 in 4A and lone lost this season came earlier this week to 5A’s No. 2 Regis Jesuit.

  • Evergreen boys basketball grabs first win under new coach

LAKEWOOD — It won’t be remembered as the most stylistic victory during the tenure for Evergreen’s first-year boys basketball coach Jeff Dolan, but it will go down as his first win leading the Cougars.

“It was great to get Coach Dolan his first win here at Evergreen,” said Evergreen senior Tyler Green who led the way with a game-high 19 points in a 57-40 victory Thursday night over Adams City. “It was a rough win, but a win is a win and we’ll take it.”

The victory came in the opening round of the Paul Davis Classic hosted by Green Mountain High School. The Cougars won the tournament last year on their run to a 19-6 record. However, Evergreen looks very different from top to bottom this year.

Scott Haebe was the Cougars’ head coach for two and a half decades, but he left the boys basketball coaching job at Evergreen and is now heading up the boys basketball program at Clear Creek High School. Dolan — Conifer High School graduate who spent time as a college assistant coach and high school coach in New Mexico — was named the Haebe’s replacement last spring.

“I always respected Scott (Haebe) he always does a great job. All the kids really know how to play,” Dolan said. “Evergreen is a basketball school so there is definitely pressure. I think I have the pieces and the coaching staff to relieve that pressure.”

Evergreen (1-1 record) got off to a rocky start Thursday, but a 12-0 run over a span of three minutes midway through the first quarter allowed the Cougars to get some distance from the Eagles. Still, Evergreen struggled with its shooting and missed 13 free throws on the night.

“It’s a good thing to get that off my shoulders,” Dolan said his first career coaching victory at Evergreen. “Hopefully it also gets out of the way a slump game too. I haven’t seen our guys play like that all year.”

Sophomores Griffin Lauritano (11 points) and Jackson Mott (10 points) both pitched in double-digit points to help out Green in the scoring department. Green finished making nine straight free throws after missing his first two of the game from the charity stripe.

“It’s going to come with time,” Green said of Evergreen struggling from the field. “We are very inexperienced. I think over time the rest of the team will start hitting more shots. They’ll start falling for us.”

The victory put Evergreen into the semifinals where the Cougars face Greeley West at 6:30 p.m. Friday night back at Green Mountain High School. Greeley West (3-0) defeated Battle Mountain 20 points in the first of four games Thursday at Green Mountain High School.

“It’s a new system too, so we are a little uncomfortable. I think we’ll get it going,” Dolan said. “We better figure it out pretty fast because Greeley West has some pretty good players.”

Adams City (0-5) is on a 17-game losing streak dating back to last season when the Eagles lost their final dozen games to finish with a 4-19 record. Senior Raymond Negrete led the Eagles with 14 points.

“A lot of credit to Adams City,” said Green about Adams City cutting the Cougars’ lead to single-digits in the fourth quarter before Evergreen was able to pullaway. “They really compete.”

Despite graduating its top five leading scorers, including Bridger Tenney and Chase Rogers who were key to Evergreen’s success for the last couple of years, Green believes the Cougars have a shot at the coveted Class 4A Jeffco League title.

“I think it’s up for grabs, but at the same time you can’t overlook anyone,” Green said of the 4A Jeffco League. “We have to improve in order to get the title for us. It is very reachable for us.”
