  • Battle Mountain and Aspen headline first day of skiing championships

    State skiing
    (Adam Hothersall/CHSAANow.com)

DURANGO — On a snowy opening day of the 2019 state skiing championships at Purgatory Resort, the weather played a definite factor as Giant Slalom and Nordic events carried on.

Leading in total points after day one, Battle Mountain girls (340 points) and Aspen boys (338 points) head into the final day with confidence and points on their side.

Despite the postponement of the Slalom round Thursday — it will be held Friday at 9 a.m. at Chapman Hill — and the last-minute change of just one lone run of the GS, these two dominant programs didn’t struggle to rack-up numbers.

Winning the GS by one point, Battle Mountain’s girls recorded 171 total as three racers finished in the top seven of the contest: No. 2 Gretchen Pavelich, No. 3 Berit Frischholz and No. 7 Kiana Brausch.

Aspen, nipping at their heels, placed three in the first eight, including the leader, Levyn Thomas (39.61 seconds). Both groups found themselves far ahead of the rest of the teams: Steamboat (143), Summit (140) and Vail Mountain (136).

As for the boys, three teams in the Giant Slalom were neck and neck (and neck) of each other.

With a two-way tie atop the leaderboard, Battle Mountain and Vail Mountain both recorded 167 behind six skiers combined on the two teams in the top 12.

For Battle Mountain: Will Bettenhausen (3rd, 40.37), Max Timm (4th, 40.73) and Dominik Lettovsky (10th, 42.47) led the Huskies.

With a competition-best time of 39.81, Shane Cole, along with Robert Harnick (5th, 41.28) and Cole Pattison (12th, 42.75) had their squad right in the thick of things all day.

In third, and only a point back, Aspen, hoping to reclaim their title as boys champion liked their chances with nine of the top 18 performers on Thursday.

The Skiers were headlined by Trey Thorpe (2nd, 40.34), Noah Forman and Charlie Olsen (tied for 7th, 41.62). Fourth and fifth place in the event went to Nederland (148 points) and Middle Park (131 points)

Switching over to Nordic and the 5 Kilometer Classic, the girls of Battle Mountain found themselves atop of the leaderboard behind second, third and ninth-place finishes from Grace Johnson, Liz Harding and Naomi Harding with times of 19:27, 19:49 and 20:25 respectively.

Winning the event and dominating in doing so, Tai-Lee Smith of Summit recorded an impressive time of 19:14 to help her squad hang in at third-place with 157 points.

In second Aspen (No. 6 Emma Barsness and No. 7 Eva McDonough top finishers), recorded 158 points on the afternoon as seven of the first 20 to cross the finish line were Skiers.

Rounding out the top five in team points in Nordic No. 4 Steamboat (145 points) and No. 5 Durango.

In the boys team category of the Nordic, Aspen finds themselves with a 14-point lead with 172 points and eight skiers in the top 21 slots.

Winning the race, Vail Mountain’s Cameron Wolfe edged out Aspen’s Everett Olson by a toe length as both competitors finished with a time of 16:01.

Coming in third, Aspen’s Colt Whitley finished with a time of 16:06 as Durango’s Logan Moore and Middle Park’s Tyler Scholl rounded out the top five with times of 16:32 and 16:47, respectively.

As a group, Middle Park snuck its way into the No. 2 spot in the event despite only Scholl and Sebastian Brower making the first 13 slots.

Host team Durango finished third with 153 points, followed by Summit (147) and Battle Mountain (136).

The championships will resume at 9 a.m. Friday at Chapman Hill with the Slalom event. The two-day festivities will wrap up with Nordic once again at Purgatory Resort starting at 3 p.m.

  • Stanford-bound Santillan seeking a big finish for himself and his Grandview teammates

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — From the time that Fabian Santillan walked into the Grandview youth wrestling program at the age of five with his two brothers, Ben Menzor saw the potential.

Menzor, an assistant with the Wolves’ wrestling program, recalled that there was something a little different with Santillan’s mental approach. At the time the club had three levels, and Santillan wanted to wrestle in each of them, even though physically he wasn’t ready.

More than a decade later, Santillan is a defending state champion looking to close his high school career at Grandview with a second consecutive title. But even bigger things await, with the senior headed to Stanford in the fall to wrestle for the Cardinal.

“It’s just such a cool thing, to develop a kid from five years old to where he’s at now, as a legit D-1 wrestler. I’m proud of him,” Menzor said. “More than anything I’ve ever done, it’s what he does. It’s his work ethic.”

Santillan kicked off his final state wrestling tournament Thursday night with a 17-1 technical fall victory over Northglenn’s Angel Alvidrez at 138 pounds. He notched five near falls and ended the match early in the third period with a reversal.

“I wrestled from my positions, positions I knew I could win,” said Santillan, who faces Pine Creek’s Brayden Roman in Friday morning’s quarterfinals. “When I do that, I always feel really good.”

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

It has been quite the journey to this point for Santillan. After placing fourth as a freshman, a knee injury sustained during his sophomore year just two weeks before regionals sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

That made Santillan worked even harder going into and throughout his junior season. He finally climbed to the top of the podium after a 4-1 decision over Adams City’s Nicholas Gonzales.

“The thing people don’t know, is he’d never won a state title, not even in youth. But he was always close,” Menzor said. “He’s always grinding, always close. Not being able to get to that final as a sophomore was devastating on the one hand, but on the other hand he really went to work (last) year.

“It was emotional for me because I’ve coached him since he was five years old, since he first came in the room.”

The opportunity to attend an Ivy League school had been the goal from the time Santillan was able to even think about college.

Princeton was recruiting him, but after Santillan made his visit to Stanford, there was no doubt where he was headed. Santillan said he’s interested in either the life sciences or computer science, but for now he’s focused on wrestling.

“He’s destined for such great things beyond just wrestling,” Menzor said. “He willed himself there, he really did. He willed himself to where he’s at now.”

Wrestling has been a family affair for Santillan and his brothers. His older brother, Armando, is a sophomore at the University of Northern Colorado; younger brother Alejandro, a junior at Grandview, won his first-round match Thursday night at 126 pounds with a 15-1 major decision.

Fabian and Alejandro are two of a contingent of nine Wolves competing at Pepsi Center this weekend.

The Wolves, who were in second place after Thursday in the 5A team standings behind Pomona, have never won a team championship. Menzor said the closest he could remember the team coming was in 2008, when Grandview placed third with 89 points.

Last year the Wolves scored 98 points but finished sixth overall.

Santillan said this tournament is even more special because Grandview has a chance to do something great as a team. For Menzor, Santillan represents that opportunity.

“This is the best team we’ve ever had since I’ve been there, and I’ve been there 13 or 14 years now,” Menzor said. “He’s the leader of that team. More than just mentally, it’s how he drills in the room. It’s not just the rah-rah stuff; he does it by showing it.

“I make my little kids watch him work out … I make the 6-year-olds watch him. I say that’s what it looks like – if you want to get to the next level, that’s what it looks like.”

  • Massive amounts of snow leads to change in state skiing’s schedule

A massive snowstorm in the southwestern part of the state has led to changes in the schedule for the state skiing championships.

Durango has been hammered by snow over the past week, with Purgatory Resort, the site of the alpine events, receiving 40 inches over the past week. Another 1-2 feet of snow is forecast through Friday evening.

The original schedule at state skiing had one alpine and one nordic event slated for Thursday, and one each on Friday. That schedule has been modified, and there will now be one race of each alpine event on Thursday. The nordic schedule remains unchanged.

On Thursday, the giant slalom will begin at 9 a.m. with the first run of the girls. The boys will follow immediately after.

At 12:15, the course will change the slalom, and the girls will take their first run. The boys will follow after.

Should conditions allow, a second run of each event will be held on Friday. A decision on that will be made by 4 p.m. Thursday.

The schedule has been updated to reflect these changes.

  • Alameda boys basketball’s dream season adds dramatic playoff win

LAKEWOOD — Not one current Alameda International boys basketball player was even alive the last time the Pirates won a playoff game on their home court.

However, the Pirates successfully turned back the clock Wednesday night with a thrilling 38-36 victory against old Jeffco rival D’Evelyn in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament.

“I’ve never seen Alameda come together like this,” Alameda senior Isiah Lawson said while students were still celebrating on the court. “I’ve never seen these many people in the crowd. The vibe at the school is just amazing.”

In the crowd Wednesday night included Duane Lewis and Scott Smith, two former Alameda boys basketball coaches that guided the Pirates during their glory days. The program advanced to the 4A Final Four in 2000 and the 4A championship game in 1996.

Lewis and Smith witnessed the first postseason victory on the Pirates home court in nearly two decades since CHSAA went to then extended state tournament field.

“It means a lot to be honest,” Alameda coach Geremey Gibson said. “It’s good for the school. It was good for us.”

While D’Evelyn (8-16 record) entered the game as the No. 42 seed and Alameda (18-6) came in as the No. 23 seed, history on the Jaguars’ side. D’Evelyn had advanced to the Sweet 16 of the state tournament in the first three years under coach Dan Zinn.

The fourth quarter started with the game knotted up 28-28.

“It was either eight minutes or go home,” Lawson said of his thoughts going into the final quarter tied. “It’s my senior year and I didn’t want to go out like that. I was just trying to play lockdown defense.”

Lawson literally stole the show in the final quarter. He had a number of steals and fittingly made the eventual game-winning shot.

“Alameda came out in that fourth quarter and we determined not to lose,” Zinn said. “Give credit to them. They did it on the defensive end and that has created their offense all year.”

Alameda trailed 36-35 with less than a minute to play. The Pirates called a timeout with the ball and drew up a familiar play designed for Lawson. Senior Dominic Creazzo feed a pass to a cutting Lawson in the lane. The 5-foot-10 guard put up an aerobic shot in the lane and was fouled.

“We run that everyday in practice,” Lawson said of his driving layup in the lane that led to the 3-point play with 23.9 seconds left to play, giving the Pirates a 38-36 lead. “I knew something good was going to happen.”

Lawson came up with another big steal with 11.8 seconds left and was fouled again.

“He clearly stole it,” Gibson said of Lawson’s defensive effort in the final few minutes. “We’ve been harping defense and our senior captain came up big.”

Lawson missed the front-end of the one-and-one to give D’Evelyn a chance to send the game into overtime. D’Evelyn senior Evan Willis was about to get off a potential game-tying shot in the final seconds, but Creazzo blocked his shot from behind. Lawson grabbed the loose ball and fired it into the air as the buzzer sounded.

“They are good. There is a reason why they have won a lot of game this year,” Zinn said of Alameda. “It was a good basketball game. It was back-and-forth there in the fourth quarter. They just happened to come out on the winning side tonight.”

Alameda faces No. 10 Harrison (19-4) in the second round of the state tournament Saturday in Colorado Springs.

“I feel like we need to play better,” Gibson said ahead of the Pirates’ second-round game. “We played really good in that first quarter and then we slowed down. I don’t think it’s going to get easier. We’ve got to get tougher and be able to execute.”

Alameda jumped out to an early 15-3 lead against D’Evelyn. Creazzo and Lawson led the Pirates in scoring with a dozen points each.

Seniors Dan Brady (11 points) and Willis (eight points) led the Jaguars in the season-ending loss.

“It was a tough year in a lot of ways,” said Zinn, who had his team play one of the toughest schedules in 4A. “Our seniors battled, but I think in the end it’s our young guys who have to take away and learn. We are going to be put through the gauntlet as far as the schedule because that is how we set it up. We have to rise to the occasion and be better.”

Seeding for the Class 3A state basketball tournament has been moved from Sunday to Tuesday because on district will not be able to complete play until Monday.

The Intermountain district tournament had to delay its semifinals and championship rounds from Friday and Saturday to Saturday and Monday as a result of a massive snowstorm in the southwestern part of the state, where the tournament was due to be held. (That same snowstorm has caused state skiing to alter its schedule.)

A snowstorm is expected to drop 1-2 feet of snow in the southwestern part of the state on Friday. As a result, the Intermountain’s semifinals are now Saturday, and championship and third-place games are Monday.

Seeding of the 3A tournament will now take place on Tuesday morning. Both the boys and girls 3A tournaments are scheduled to begin play on Friday.

  • Montrose boys basketball beats Kennedy in first round of 4A tourney

    (Christina Martin/ Montrose Daily Press)

MONTROSE — In the first round of the Class 4A state tournament, Montrose boys basketball emerged with a win over Kennedy on Wednesday night.

Montrose built multiple big leads throughout the night, only to see Kennedy chip away and mount a comeback multiple times. Ultimately, though, Montrose pulled away for a 67-62 victory.

Connor Imus hit two late free-throws which helped seal the win.

“What a great basketball game,” Montrose coach Ryan Voehringer said. “I thought we played our best two quarters of the year in the second and third quarters. Credit Kennedy for turning up the pressure in the fourth quarter.

“Two clutch free throws from Connor Imus to seal the game with six seconds to go,” he added. “I thought we attacked the rim and shot the ball extremely well for three quarters. We played tentative in the fourth and most of that was due to Kennedy’s pressure.

“I’m proud of my guys for how far we’ve come since beginning of November. Survive and advance at this point.”

Sean Alex led Montrose with 16 points. Trey Reese added 13, Jordan Jennings had 12 and Imus had 11.

Kennedy led 13-10 after the first quarter, and pushed that lead to 15-10 before Montrose scored eight-straight points to go up 18-15. Montrose continued to score and soon led 24-17.

Kennedy rallied, and cut that lead to 24-23 before Montrose went on another run to lead 34-28 at halftime. The extended their lead to 57-39 after three quarters.

In the fourth, Kennedy scored the first nine points to cut the lead to 57-48. They eventually got within 65-62 with six seconds to play before Imus made two free throws to seal the win.

“We came out strong and got an early lead, but later on we sort of lost our composure,” Montrose junior Sean Alex said. “We had multiple guys step up like Connor making free throws and got the win. Now we have to move on to the next game and try and win that one.”

Kennedy was led by Riley Mayoral (16 points) and Jordan Bennett (14 points).

“It never is easy go see your season end or say goodbye to a great group of seniors but I’m proud of our body of work and proud of our fight we showed down the stretch,” Kennedy coach Adam Hooker said. “In the end we just lost to a better coach, more disciplined team. We’ve all got to grow from this; as coaches, student-athletes and men. My hat’s off to Coach Voehringer and his Montrose squad and I wish them the best of luck moving forward.”
