COLORADO SPRINGS — It’s not a long drive from Calhan to the metro area of Colorado Springs. After jumping on Highway 24 and cruising through Peyton then Falcon, it really amounts to 20 minutes or so on a bus.
But it can feel far removed. The drive to Calhan, the drive from Calhan, it makes no difference to the Bulldogs. Spring is here and on the baseball diamond, the ninth-ranked team in Class 2A is having a blast.
That’s what happens when winning is a common feat and there’s a community around to provide support.
“We’ve been very fortunate with the talent on the field,” coach Donovan Mitchell said. “And I can speak to my program in particular when I say we have the best support from our families and parents. These are the parents that drive their kids around the state for seven, eight, nine months of the year because they love baseball.”
It’s the same with No. 1 Peyton. The Panthers fell just short of winning a 2A state title last year and look to be poised to make another run this year.

Mitchell is perfectly fine if the attention stays away from his boys. And they don’t seem to mind it either. After a 15-1 win over 1A No. 6 Evangelical Christian Academy, the Bulldogs didn’t hoot and holler like a team looking for attention.
The players exchanged brief high fives and then starting thinking about the next day and the next game. They behave like a squad that’s starting to gain some momentum while still going somewhat unnoticed.
“I think we are (flying under the radar),” senior Brayden Dillingham said. “And I like it. When we get up to the tournament, we want everyone to wonder where this team came from.”
It’ll be hard to underestimate a hitter like Dillingham. He’s batting .586 and has blasted three home runs this year.
In his first at-bat on Thursday, his first swings looked like he was trying to hit a 3-run home run with the bases empty. But Mitchell wouldn’t dare see Dillingham change that approach.
“We have had a strong team before,” Mitchell said. “It’s been uncommon for us. What we’ve preached from the beginning is we need gamers. In the first inning, our four-hole (hitter) wants to go up and be a gamer.”
The Bulldogs (7-2 overall) are full of gamers. Seniors Eddie Glaser and Nathan Deputy are both batting over .400 and have driven in 10 runs apiece.
Then there’s catcher Joe Hayes. He’s batting .296 and has scored 11 runs. But it was his pitching performance against John Mall that stands out the most. He threw six innings in the 18-0 win and struck out 16 batters en route to throwing Calhan’s only no-hitter to date this year.
He’s just another gamer on the roster.
“What’s special about this team is that we’re a really tight-knit group,” Glaser said. “We play together and we play for each other. We have a lot of respect for each other and we hold ourselves to high standards.”
For now, Calhan is happy flying under the radar especially with top-ranked Peyton just a town away. They’ll happily bide their time and when the right moment comes, the gamers will strike.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE — Ben Perla went 3-for-4 with four RBI’s as Class 5A No. 5 Cherry Creek baseball got a walk-off 8-7 win over Mullen.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Starting in 2012, the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference was the dominant league for girls soccer. Five-straight Class 4A state championships were won by three different teams from the PPAC.
In the last two years, the championship has eluded the Colorado Springs-based league. D’Evelyn and Windsor brought home 4A titles in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
From the looks of things, the PPAC is itching to get its hands back on championship gold. Only, it might be a new set of hands raising the trophy.
Sand Creek – the top-ranked team in 4A – has been on a tear in 2019, winning its first eight games of the year which included a 2-0 win over Cheyenne Mountain in Wednesday’s PPAC opener. It was coach Jeremy Tafoya’s first win over Cheyenne Mountain in his five years as coach of the Scorpions.
“My daughter played four years here and was the superstar,” Tafoya said. “If there was one game she had circled it was this one. In four years she had two overtime losses by a goal and a 3-2 loss. They’re not our rivals, but in my mind they are.”
It was Zoey Shank who put the Scorpions (8-0 overall, 1-0 PPAC) on the board in the 14th minute. She was able to get by the Cheyenne Mountain defenders and fire a shot at an angle that gave Indians keeper Ashley Bertsch no shot at it.
Cheyenne Mountain (0-4, 0-1) almost tied the game on a free kick from Carly Fetters. The Northern Colorado commit drew the ball to the top-right corner, but Lexi Montero got herself in position to make the save at the last second.
“Since I’m a short goalkeeper I have to make sure my angles are correct,” Montero said. “Knowing where the ball is going and knowing I can get there on time, I can make a save and make a fast play to the offense which has happened many times.”
That was much of the story in the first half. The Indians seemed to be on the attack more consistently and gave themselves more opportunities to strike. The only problem is that they couldn’t convert on any of them. Sand Creek, on the other hand, was able to take advantage of their limited chances in the first 40 minutes.
Sophomore Sydney Lasater pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute which helped the Scorpions play more comfortably to start the second half.

“As long as we can stay organized defensively and then when we have the chance to go forward we have to take advantage of it,” senior Jaden Davis said. “We’re going to forward and we’re going to score goals.”
Lasater’s goal was her 24th of the year which puts her in a tie with Stargate’s Kayla Futakami for most in the state. The Scorpions as a team have only allowed five all year. The team scores at a clip of over eight goals a game, showing a respectful balance between offense and defense.
It’s the kind of combination that leads to deep playoff runs.
“It helps level out the team overall,” Davis added.
Sand Creek had a successful 11-4-1 campaign a year ago but was edged out by Battle Mountain in the first round of the 4A state tournament. What has helped this season is that there were no seniors on the roster a year ago.
This core group of girls has been playing together since they were kids and with a combination of skill and chemistry taking hold, Tafoya has high expectations for these girls.
“I set the tone from the start,” Tafoya said. “I told them that anything less than a state title is a disappointment. And they know. I honestly believe I have the best team.”

ARVADA — It was a little bit of disappointment for Chatfield and Ralston Valley girls soccer programs to open up the Class 5A Jeffco League season Wednesday night.
In the CHSAANow.com 5A girls soccer top-10 showdown, No. 10 Chatfield and No. 9 Ralston Valley finished in a scoreless tie after 100 minutes on the pitch at the North Area Athletic Complex.

“It’s super, super, super frustrating. I had one that I should have had,” Ralston Valley senior Brooklyn Garrido said of her breakaway shot in the 78th minute that just sailed over the cross bar. “I couldn’t have taken another touch. The goalie was coming out at me. I missed it by this much.”
Chatfield (4-1-1, 0-0-1 in league) had its scoring chances late too. Sophomore Kylee Delany and junior Kylie Wells both had shots that just missed their targets during the two 10-minute overtime periods.
“Nobody was able to break that seal even thou a lot of us had chances,” Chatfield coach Brock Blume said. “It comes down the execution when you are tired and gassed.”
In the end, Chatfield junior goalie Abby Wilkinson and Ralston Valley sophomore goalie Lilly VanAlsburg both picked up shutouts in net.
“Both teams went offensive instead of going for the tie. Both of us wanted this win tonight,” Ralston Valley coach Kamee Morwood said of the numerous scoring chances. “Usually when you miss so many opportunities the other team will get you.”

Ralston Valley (2-1-1, 0-0-1) has played a tough non-league schedule with wins over Liberty and Rocky Mountain. The Mustangs’ lone loss so far was to No. 2 Arapahoe.
“I like to have our girls see this level of competition with two top-10 teams,” Morwood said of playing another top-10 ranked team out of the gate in conference play. “Our level of competition so far this season has been really high. We keep hanging in there.”
Ralston Valley steps away from league play to face Standley Lake in a non-league game at 5 p.m. Friday, April 5, at NAAC. The Mustangs return to conference play against rival Arvada West at 7 p.m. Monday, April 8, at NAAC.
“I don’t think this hurts us in anyway,” Garrido said of the tie. “I think we can build from this.”
Blume admitted he was disappointed with the tie just with the amount of close scoring chances his Chargers had, but starting off league with a tough game was good.
“We always know it’s going to be a battle,” Blume said of facing the Mustangs’ in the league opener. “Ralston Valley is one of the perennial contenders for the league.”
The Chargers next head to Lakewood Memorial Field for a conference game against Bear Creek at 7 p.m. Monday, April 8.

ARVADA — Columbine’s journey toward a sixth straight girls soccer Class 5A Jeffco League title officially started Wednesday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.
The Rebels — ranked No. 6 in the CHSAANow.com 5A girls soccer rankings — have won fifth consecutive conference titles.

“It’s definitely a goal of ours,” Columbine coach Brian Todd said of the incredible string of conference titles. “I’m sure everyone wants to knock us off. It’s motivation in both directions for everybody.”
It did take a little overtime work to get off on the right foot this league season. Senior Tessa Barton kicked home the game-winning goal in the 4th minute of the first overtime period to give Columbine a 2-1 victory over a gritty Arvada West team.
Columbine has a piled up a 32-3-1 league record during the remarkable five-year run. The Rebels’ last conference blemish was a scoreless tie against Chatfield on April 20, 2016. Last league loss was to the rival Chargers on May 1, 2015.
“League openers are always fun and we had a pretty good crowd,” Barton said after the Rebels celebrated their 18th straight conference winning dating back to 2016. “It took a little longer than we wished with going overtime. Arvada West is a pretty good team.”
A-West (3-2, 0-1 in league) held a 1-0 lead at halftime. Senior Makenna Fowler scored late in the first half for the Wildcats on a great shot. However, Columbine (4-2, 1-0) settled in and put heavy offensive pressure on A-West for the remainder of the game.
Junior Peyton Weber put in the game-tying goal in the 50th minute on a long shot that rocketed under the cross bar.

“I knew my team needed it,” Weber said of the equalizer. “My adrenaline was going. I saw my chance and took it. I didn’t really think about it. I knew I just had to strike it.”
Barton scored her team-high eighth goal of the season converting on the penalty kick in the first few minutes of the overtime period.
“I’m proud of our girls. They got it done tonight,” Todd said. “A-West had a good team this year. They are going to have a good year.”
A-West has a weekend trip to the mountains for a non-league game. The Wildcats face Glenwood Springs at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6. A-West returns to league play against No. 9 and rival Ralston Valley at 7 p.m. Monday, April, 8 at NAAC.
“It’s going to be a fun Jeffco run,” Todd said. “You can’t discount anyone in our league. We just added Valor and there are some other good tests for everybody.”
The Rebels continue conference play Monday, April 8, at Lakewood Memorial Field. Columbine has a 5 p.m. start against rival Dakota Ridge.
“We’ve won it (league title) all three years and my senior year would mean the most to me, especially with this group of girls,” Barton said. “To win a league championship sets us closer to winning a state championship.”

LITTLETON — It was a fast start for Class 5A No. 9 Grandview boys lacrosse as the Wolves scored 11 goals in the first half and beat Dakota Ridge 19-8 on Wednesday.
