  • No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain boys lacrosse beats No. 3 Thompson Valley

    In a key Class 4A boys lacrosse matchup, top-ranked Cheyenne Mountain picked up a big win over No. 3 Thompson Valley on Saturday.

    Cheyenne Mountain got five goals apiece from Ike Eastbum and Wiley Burkett, both seniors, in the win. Mitchell Lewis, a freshman, and Cole Mika, a sophomore, each also scored two goals.

    Zak Paige added a goal and six ground balls, while Griffin Meyer also scored and had five ground balls. Vane Maready also had a goal for Cheyenne Mountain.

    In the cage, Liam Hybi made 17 saves.

    Cheyenne Mountain established the lead early on Saturday, with a 5-1 advantage after the first quarter. Thompson Valley rallied in the second, to cut the lead to 7-5 at halftime, but Cheyenne Mountain pushed it to a 12-7 lead after three, and then continued to put pressure on in the fourth.

    Cheyenne Mountain is now 11-2 this season, while Thompson Valley drops to 7-4.

  • No. 10 Fairview girls soccer beats No. 5 Cherry Creek in top-10 5A matchup

    Fairview girls soccer notched its third-straight shutout in a defeat of No. 5 Cherry Creek on Saturday.

    The Knights, ranked No. 10 in Class 5A, scored a goal in each half en route to the win.

    They are now unbeaten over their past seven games, going 6-0-1, and stand at 8-2-1 overall this season.

    The loss snapped a run of three-straight wins for Cherry Creek, which is now 7-2-1 this season.

  • No. 2 Eaton baseball beats No. 3 Sterling in 3A matchup

    Ryan Ure went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs to help Eaton win a huge Class 3A baseball matchup against Sterling on Saturday.

    No. 2 Eaton beat No. 3 Sterling, 11-4, thanks in large part to a quick-starting offense which scored three runs in the first, one in the third, and three more in the fourth.

    Eaton actually led the game 9-0 before Sterling’s comeback attempt in the top of the sixth that saw them score four runs.

    Roper Rich also drove in two runs as part of a 3-for-4 day which saw him score two runs. Jared Ure also had two RBIs and pitched six innings in the win, striking out eight, and CJ Blaskowski scored three runs for the Reds.

    Eaton has now won eight consecutive games, and they are unbeaten in the month of April. The Reds are 10-2 overall.

    The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for Sterling, which is now 11-2.

  • No. 4 Montrose beats Grand Junction thanks to a great pitching performance

    Fourth-ranked Montrose baseball scored seven runs on ten hits en route to a 7-2 win over Grand Junction on Friday.

    Dustin Boone led the way for Montrose with a two-run home run, and Dylan James went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

    Trey Schwardtfeger pitched 5 2/3 innings in the win, allowing just one earned run. He struck out 10.

    “Our guys played tough and executed well,” Montrose coach Landon Wareham said. “We were ready to get after a good pitcher and good team.”

    After Grand Junction grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Boone hit his two-run home run, which gave Montrose the lead for good. They added a run in the second, and another in the fourth to make it 4-1.

    Grand Junction scored one run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead in half at 4-2. But Montrose responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth.

    “Hits are contagious and right away we were hitting, so it spread around,” said Montrose senior Indy Laird. “We all stuck to the same approach and it works.”

    Montrose, now 15-3, plays at Durango next Friday and Saturday. Grand Junction (10-7) hosts Eagle Valley on Monday.

  • No. 5 Green Mountain boys lacrosse outlasts No. 4 Golden in 3OT

    Green Mountain boys lacrosse won an epic top-5 matchup against Golden on Friday.

    The Rams, ranked No. 5, outlasted No. 4 Golden, 9-8, after three overtimes.

    Senior Karson Bell led Green Mountain with four goals. Trey Corkin and Tanner Wagner each scored twice, and Gavin Forrest also scored for the Rams.

    Goalie Ryan Burdi made 20 saves.

    Green Mountain led most of the way — it was 3-2 after the first quarter and 5-2 at halftime.

    But Golden started a rally in the third quarter, cutting it to 7-5 after the frame, and then they outscored Green Mountain 3-1 in the fourth to send it to overtime.

    Neither team scored in first or second overtime, before Green Mountain won it in the third.

    The Rams are now 8-1 this season, and have won five games in a row.

  • No. 7 Hotchkiss baseball won two top-ten games on Friday

    Hotchkiss baseball, ranked No.  7 in Class 2A, picked up wins over the No. 6 and No. 4 teams in 1A on Friday.

    The Bulldogs beat No. 6 Dove Creek 14-5 in nine innings in a game that started at 10 a.m. in Dove Creek. Then, in a 3 p.m. game, they traveled to and beat No. 4 Nucla 15-3.

    In the first game, Dove Creek tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Two innings later, Hotchkiss scored nine runs in the top of the ninth for the win.

    In the second game, Hotchkiss trailed 3-2 heading to the sixth — before exploding for six runs in the sixth, and seven more in the seventh.

    Over the two games, Hotchkiss senior Presley Pene was 6-for-10 with five runs scored. He homered in the win over Dove Creek, and had five RBIs.

    Pene also started the win over Nucla, and struck out 11 batters in five innings.

    Brian Gonzalez had two RBIs in each game for the Bulldogs. He also pitched in the win over Dove Creek, and had nine strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.

    Hotchkiss is now 12-1 this season. They return to action with games against Paonia next Thursday and Friday.
