Girls golf regionals: Vista PEAK’s Severin wins in playoff to highlight first day

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) COLORADO SPRINGS — Vista PEAK’s Kylie Severin had a three-stroke lead with two holes to go at Kissing Camels Golf Course. But after a frustrating bogey, double-bogey finish she went to playoff against Coronado’s Kate Griffin to determine the winner of Class 4A Region 1.
Severin and Griffin each shot a nine-over-par-80 on the day.
Both players made par on the first playoff hole and blasted drives down the fairway of the South course’s fourth hole. Severin found the green for an eagle putt while Griffin rolled off the back. She was unable to get up and down for birdie allowing Severin to two-putt for the win, which she successfully did.
Coronado won the team title and Vista PEAK came in second meaning both teams will head to Windsor in two weeks.
Other 4A individual regional winners from Monday included Holy Family’s Hailey Schalk and Mullen’s Sofia Choi.
Golden, Durango, Windsor and Niwot all qualified teams for the state tournament.

The girls tennis state tournaments will use a two-day format to avoid weather

AURORA — The state tennis tournaments in all classifications will condense to a two-day format this week in an effort to avoid poor weather in the forecast.
The tournaments were each scheduled to be played this Thursday through Saturday. Instead, with rain and snow expected on Thursday, the championships will be played only on Friday and Saturday.
The 3A tournament is hosted in Greeley, 4A is in Pueblo, and 5A is in Denver. Both Denver and Greeley are expecting snow on Thursday, while rain is in the forecast for Pueblo.
“It is our hope that this advance notice can help with travel and planning,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bethany Brookens. “While weather in uncertain and there may be an opportunity for sporadic play on Thursday, we believe it is in the best interest to cancel the entire day, so that schools aren’t waiting around and having to pay for hotel rooms.
“Additionally, we want consistency of rest time within a bracket and between brackets. We have used this two-day format before, and we are confident that each classification will still have a great tournament.”
The plan is for the first and second rounds to be played on Friday. Saturday will consist of semifinal and championship matches, along with all playbacks, and third- and fourth-place matches.
The matches will be scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, but play will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
Additionally, the 3A and 5A tournaments will split to two sites each.
3A will use Centennial Park in Greeley as its primary site, and the University of Northern Colorado as the second site both days.
5A’s primary site will remain Gates Tennis Center in Denver. A second site — Utah Park in Aurora — will be used on Friday, and Saturday all matches will be held at Gates Tennis Center.
The 4A tournament will be played entirely at Pueblo City Park.

Valor Christian hires A.J. Kuhle to be its next boys basketball coach
Valor Christian has named A.J. Kuhle as its next boys basketball coach, the school announced on Tuesday.
His coaching experience includes one year at De La Salle (Calif.), where he led his team to the NorCal championship and the CIF Open Division final. He was also an assistant at Air Force, his alma mater, and the University of Denver.
“Coach Kuhle brings a zeal for reaching athletes for Christ through athletics, as well as a wealth of winning basketball experience, both playing and coaching,” Valor Christian athletic director Jamie Heiner said in a press release. “We truly look forward to the leadership of Coach Kuhle and we are excited about how he will use his coaching platform to impact the young men in our program for life.”
Kuhle played college basketball at Air Force in the early 2000s, helping the team win a Mountain West championship.
He called it “an incredible honor to join the Valor Family.”
“Great athletic traditions are something that have always resonated with me, and therefore, it is an incredible honor to join the Valor Family,” Kuhle said. “It’s what drew me to the Air Force Academy and inspired me to build winning programs at the University of Denver and De La Salle. The incredible tradition that echoes through the rafters and permeates throughout the Valor basketball program has drawn me to the Hilltop.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with amazing leadership in elevating a culture of excellence that will carry that tradition to new heights and bring honor to the school and the community.”
Kuhle replaces Troy Pachner, who spent four seasons at the school and was named the coach at Arapahoe on Tuesday.
Valor Christian went 11-13 last season in its first season in 5A, and advanced to the state tournament.

Troy Pachner named the new boys basketball coach at Arapahoe

(Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com) Arapahoe has named Troy Pachner is new boys basketball coach, the school announced on Twitter.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Pachner told CHSAANow on Tuesday. “There’s a storied tradition there.”
“As you step into a storied program like Arapahoe, you think all the way back to Coach (Ron) Vlasin, you think everything he did, and about the tree that he launched with so many great coaches,” Pachner added. “And then it continued under Coach Snyder with what he did. And then this time period with coach Jansen, he did a really good job. I feel like the program is in a great spot.”
Pachner spent the past four seasons as the coach at Valor Christian, winning the Class 4A state title in 2017, where he was 77-29. He was let go after this season.
Pachner’s Valor teams made the state tournament in each of his four seasons, a run that included three Great 8s, two Final 4s and two title game appearances.
Prior to that, Pachner served 17 years as the head coach at D’Evelyn. He went 292-129 at D’Evelyn, and also spent three years as a coach at Kern Valley in California, giving him a career record of 397-193 in 24 seasons.
Pachner takes over for Brad Jansen at Arapahoe. Jansen led the Warriors for the previous five seasons.
“There’s probably no better gym in this state with just the history, the venue is really incredible,” Pachner said. “I’m just excited to be leading this program forward. I can’t wait to play in what traditionally and historically has been the strongest athletic league in the state.
“We’re going to bring Arapahoe basketball back to the competitive forefront of this state, and we’re going to do whatever it takes to do that, and we’re going to build special relationships with these kids that last well after their basketball careers are over,” he continued. “Ultimately, the relationships that hopefully last a lifetime will be what this is all about in the end.”
