LAKEWOOD — It took a perfect corner kick, followed by a pin-point placed header Wednesday night to end a five-year girls soccer dynasty in the Class 5A Jeffco League.
Chatfield — No. 10 in the CHSAANow.com 5A girls soccer rankings — ended rival and No. 7 ranked Columbine’s remarkable conference winning streak at 24 games at Lakewood Memorial Field.

“We had a little revenge tour after last year when we lost late to them last season,” Chatfield coach Brock Blume said of the Chargers’ 1-0 double-overtime loss a year ago. “Obviously it was time for someone else to get that (league) plaque and unseat their run.”
Junior Madi Reszetucha headed in a corner kick from senior Rylie Mullen into the back of the net in the 27th minute of the first half. The lone goal held up for a 1-0 victory in the conference finale for both teams.
“I knew I was going to score,” said Reszetucha, who came up from her middle back position on the corner kick. “I was just going for it and it went in.”
Reszetucha and sophomore Izzy Wildermuth had the task all night on having to limit one of the top goal scorers in 5A — Columbine senior Tessa Barton (20 goals) — from getting loose. Blume added that he wanted to put Reszetucha in position to make a difference on the offensive end too.
“She (Reszetucha) has been knocking on the door on those set pieces all year,” Blume said. “When you have a player of her stature you have to send her up.”

Mullen was also not in her normal role on the game-winning goal.
“I normally don’t take the corners, but I decided to take it,” Mullen said. “I always look for Madi’s head and she got it. That was the goal we needed.”
Chatfield (12-1-1, 7-0-1 in 5A Jeffco) celebrated with the conference plaque in hand on the chilly and damp night. The victory also prevented Columbine (10-4-1, 7-1) from winning a sixth straight league title.
“This is the most insane thing ever,” Mullen said. “All four years this has been our goal. This was the most fun game I’ve ever played in my entire life. Playing with my favorite people. This is the best feeling in the world. It’s crazy.”
It was the eighth straight victory for Chatfield after a league-opening scoreless tie against Ralston Valley nearly a month ago. The only loss this season for the Chargers was a 1-0 defeat against No. 6 Cherry Creek.

“Tonight was a playoff preview of what games are going to be like,” Blume said. “You need to find a way to get that goal and battle. You have those moments when girls have to step up.”
Finishing 1-and-2, Chatfield and Columbine earned the two automatic bids for the postseason from 5A Jeffco. It’s almost guaranteed that both will get first-round home playoff games when the tournament begins Tuesday, May 7.
The Rebels had gone undefeated through league play for three straight seasons. The last league blemish was a scoreless tie against rival Chatfield on April 20, 2016. The last conference loss was exactly four years ago, a 1-0 loss to Chatfield on May 1, 2015.
Columbine now sits and waits for the 5A state brackets to be released. CHSAA is scheduled to have the 32-team state tournament posted Monday, May 6.
“They (Rebels) are an amazing team and will have a great run in the (state) tournament, but we are looking to do the same,” Blume said.
Chatfield has one final non-league game against 4A’s No. 1 ranked team D’Evelyn (10-1-2, 4-0-2 in 4A Jeffco) at 4 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Chatfield Senior High School.
“It’s really nice that we have that,” Mullen said of the non-league game against D’Evelyn on Friday. “They are going to be good so it will be good going into playoffs.”

COLORADO SPRINGS — No. 4 Rampart girls soccer picked up a 3-2 win over The Classical Academy on Wednesday.

Regis Jesuit won a tight battle of top-10 Class 5A boys lacrosse teams on Wednesday, taking down Kent Denver.
The seventh-ranked Raiders won their seventh-straight game with a 10-9 victory against the No. 4 Sun Devils.
Jack Ringhofer scored three goals and had two assists for Regis Jesuit, and Jake Taylor also had three goals, including the game-winner with less than a minute to play in regulation. Joe Kassal scored twice, Reed Babock had three assists, and Max Rizzi and Matt Van Dusen also scored for the Raiders.
Regis Jesuit led 2-1 after the first quarter, but Kent Denver rallied to go up 4-3 late in the second quarter. Then, with less than 30 seconds to play in the half, the Raiders’ Ringhoffer scored his second goal of the game, on a man-up advantage, to knot it up at 4-4.
The two teams traded goals the entirety of the third quarter. It was 5-4 Regis, 5-5, 6-5 Regis, 6-6, 7-6 Kent, and finally 7-7 heading to the fourth.
Kent Denver broke open a 9-7 lead to begin the fourth, and then Ringhoffer scored his third, unassisted, with 6:30 to go in the game. That made it 9-8, and then Kassal tied things at 9 with 5:41 to play. It was his second goal of the game.
The Raiders went on a one-minute man advantage with 1:34 remaining, and scored just as that penalty expired: Taylor put it home off an assist from Babcock with 33 seconds to play.
Regis Jesuit moves to 10-4 this season. They play their final regular season contest against No. 1 Arapahoe on Friday.
With the loss, Kent Denver is now 11-3 this season. The Sun Devils also finish their regular season on Friday, against No. 2 Cherry Creek.
DENVER — Savion Johnson scored a game-high five goals as Thomas Jefferson boys lacrosse beat Lutheran 12-5 on Wednesday.

COLORADO SPRINGS — With spring playoff season closer with May having arrived, the temperatures in Colorado are struggling to warm up.
On the girls soccer field, however, the Rampart Rams refuse to cool down. The regular season is set to end on Saturday and the Rams have been hot all year. With a 3-2 win over The Classical Academy on Wednesday night, their record improved to 13-0, just two wins shy of completing an undefeated season. Not bad for a team currently ranked fourth in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com soccer poll.
It has everyone at the school ranging from teachers to fans to the players themselves wondering what this team is capable of when the 5A state tournament begins.
“We hope to surprise (everyone), the Denver teams especially,” coach Carisa Whitson said. “The Colorado Springs teams don’t get enough credit at times. It’s nice that Rampart has been in the news a little bit more and it’s all because of the girls. They’ve worked really hard the last couple of years to get to where we are. We’re excited to be in this position and hope to make a run in the playoffs.”
She’s not lying. The girls have played sound soccer and even taken advantage of a lucky bounce or two this season.

The Rams have a trio of consistent scorers in Grace McReynolds, Kaitlyn Wilcox and Joey Garrett. McReynolds leads the team with 10 goals on the season while Wilcox and Garrett each have eight.
It was Wilcox – with an assist from Garrett – who got the game-winner Wednesday against TCA.
Rampart has no problem sharing the ball amongst each other because at the end of the day, this isn’t a group of individuals working together to achieve a common goal. These girls are friends who are looking to do something special together.
“We all know each other so well and we’re so close on and off the field,” Garrett said. “There’s no real separate groups, we’re all together. I think that correlates on the field and helps us win and be successful.”
This is something that Whitson has noticed over the course of the last few seasons. Just two years ago, the majority of this year’s lineup roamed the halls of Rampart High School as wide-eyed freshmen or as sophomores just looking for where they fit in the high school hierarchy.
There was no question about where they would one day rank on the soccer field. In 2017, the Rams went 11-5. They improved to 13-3 last year, but suffered the same season-ending fate – a first-round playoff loss.
They’ve learned. And they’ve used those lessons and their connection on the field
“They just don’t quit,” Whitson said. “They have a ton of perseverance and the relationships that they’ve built with this group since freshman/sophomore year has made this group tight. They really connect. They connect on the field, they have relationships off the field, they do quite a few team bonding events so I think that’s really helped us get to the point where we’re at.”
What’s kept the Rams undefeated is an strong balance on the field. They can certainly score goals as their 58 ranks third in 5A as a team. But their ability to keep opponents out of the net has played a major role as well. Prior to the game against TCA, keeper Katlyn Rosenbaum had allowed just four goals all year and recorded eight shutouts.
She sees her friends doing their part up front so she knows that she needs to match that effort when manning the net.
“I want to help our team achieve our goal of getting past the first round of the playoffs,” she said. “The only way to do that is to keep as many of those little shots away from the goal as possible.”
Mission accomplished so far, but things are going to get a tad more difficult as the state tournament is set to begin next week.
With teams like Grandview and Mountain Vista consistently in the state title picture, fans already know plenty about those programs. It looks like a lot of people are going to start learning some things about Rampart in the coming weeks.
But what’s the most important thing they need to know?
“That we’re going to win state,” Garrett said.
That means the team just needs to stay hot. And if it can syphon some of that temperature into the Colorado weather, all the better.

Mallory Pugh, who graduated from Mountain Vista in 2016, has been named to the U.S. women’s World Cup roster on Thursday.
The former national high school soccer player of the year will now represent her country at her sport’s biggest event, which is set for June 7-July 7 in France.
Pugh has been a member of the U.S. senior national team since her senior year of high school in 2016. She represented the U.S. at the 2016 Olympic games, becoming the youngest American to score.
In 50 international games, Pugh has scored 15 goals, including three goals in seven games in 2019.
The U.S. squad is in Group F along with Thailand, Chile and Sweden. Their first match is June 11 against Thailand.
Professionally, Pugh plays for the Washington Spirit of the NWSL.
Lindsey Horan, a 2012 graduate of Golden High School, was also named to the team. Horan didn’t participate in high school soccer.

Cornerstone Christian Academy, the private school located in Westminster, will change its name to Flatirons Academy starting next school year.
The name change comes as a result of a partnership with Flatirons Community Church, which is nearby.
The school will open a newly-constructed K-12 campus for the 2021 school year, at I-25 and County Road 8.
Flatirons Academy will continue to operate in Class 1A, and as a member of the 5280 League.
CALHAN — Brayden Dillingham went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs as Calhan baseball beat Limon 13-3 on Tuesday.
