LITTLETON — Saturday was a must-win situation if Chatfield had any hope of hanging a 2019 Class 5A Jeffco League softball championship banner in its gym.

“We’ve been in a bit of a funk, but they are fighting and clawing,” Chatfield coach Jen Lazzeri said after the Chargers ended a 2-game losing streak with a big 4-2 home victory against Lakewood. “I’ve told them that every season has challenges and adversity. It’s about how you respond to it. It’s a great life lesson.”

Chatfield — No. 2 in the CHSAANow.com 5A rankings — was coming off back-to-back conference losses to Arvada West and Dakota Ridge. The Chargers (17-2, 2-2 in league) knew a third loss in league play would likely end any chance of winning the conference title.

“It was something we wanted to fight for going into it,” Chatfield sophomore Peyton Shepard said of the Chargers going after that league title. “We had the energy to do it today.”

Shepard also had the speed to create a scoring chance every time she came to the plate. The sophomore lead-off hitter was 2-for-2 from the plate and stole a pair of bases while scoring twice in the close game.

She led off the game with a single, stole second and eventually scored on a groundout by junior Izzy DiNapoli in the top of the first inning.

“That is something I’ve always wanted to excel at,” Shepard said of using her speed to create havoc for the opposing team. “It gets my adrenaline going which helps me succeed the rest of the game.”

No. 9 Lakewood (16-4, 3-2) actually grabbed a 2-1 lead by scoring a run in both the fourth and fifth innings on Chatfield fielding errors. However, the Chargers answered with a 3-run bottom of the fifth inning.

Sophomore Dakota DiPaola walked to start the rally. Shepard and junior Courtney Bidwell ripped back-to-back RBI hits to regain the lead.

“Those two hits by Peyton and Courtney were huge. It just flipped the switch,” Lazzeri said. “The energy came up on the dugout. It reminded us who we are and that we could do this.”

DiNapoli drove in her second run of the game to extend the Chargers’ lead to 4-2 heading to the sixth inning. The junior ace was even more impressive in the circle. DiNapoli finished with 15 strikeouts and worked her way out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the win.

“When she (DiNapoli) gets in her groove she is scary,” Lazzeri said.

Lakewood sophomore Destiny Martinez nearly matched DiNapoli. The Tigers’ pitching ace finished with 11 strikeouts in the loss.

“Hats off to Chatfield. They are a great team,” Lakewood coach Dannielle Engler said. “This league is a good one. We have to move forward into the next day, the next game. We’ll prepare for Tuesday.”

The Tigers hosts Ralston Valley at Ray Baker Field on Lakewood’s campus Tuesday afternoon. Lakewood is still in contention for the league title in what has been a wild conference race.

Arvada West (9-9, 3-0) is the lone undefeated team in the conference after top-10 ranked Chatfield, Columbine and Lakewood all suffered early league defeats.

“We are trying to keep some of that pressure off of them,” Lazzeri said of her squad that was ranked No. 1 for three weeks before dropping a spot this past week in the rankings. “Pressure is hard to play with unless you use it to your advantage and attack. It is really easy to play tight. We’ve talked a lot about pressure being external. We have to pay attention more internally.”

Chatfield hits the road to face Pomona on Tuesday before finishing off league play against Bear Creek, Ralston Valley and Columbine. The showdown against the No. 5 Rebels is the final day of league play on Oct. 10.

  • No. 2 Strasburg knocks off No. 1 Limon in rematch of 1A football title game

In a matchup of the top two teams in Class 1A football, Strasburg emerged with a 20-13 victory.

Ahead 14-13, Strasburg chewed up the clock in the fourth quarter as they protected their slim lead. Quarterback Collin Russell secured the victory with a 4-yard touchdown with about one minute to play in the game.

The game was a rematch of the 2018 title game, won by Limon, and pitted two of 1A’s standard-bearers against one another: The two programs have combined to win the past three 1A titles.

The loss snapped Limon’s 16-game winning streak, which had been the longest in Colorado.

Limon struck first on Saturday, with Jeremiah Leeper’s 4-yard run putting the Badgers up 7-0 with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Strasburg leveled the game in the second quarter, when Kody Robson punched in a 1-yard touchdown to cap a near seven-minute drive.

After forcing a Strasburg punt, Limon marched down the first and took the lead again on a 1-yard score from Leeper, but missed the extra point, to go ahead 13-7.

Strasburg turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession, but got the ball back when Jack Swanson came up with an interception, setting his team up with the ball at Limon’s 18-yard-line. The led to an 18-yard touchdown from Trystan Graff, which put Strasburg ahead 14-13 with one minute left in the third quarter.

The teams traded punts in the fourth quarter, and Limon punted once more with six minutes left. Strasburg got the ball at its own 42. Two long passes from Russell pushed possession to the Limon 25 with four minutes to play.

Then, two minutes later, Jayden Zacher rushed it down to the 9-yard-line. Eventually, Russell scored from four yards out with one minute left, helping Strasburg secure the big win.

  • Nisbeth nets five goals as No. 3 Atlas Prep boys soccer beats St. Mary’s

    (Derek Lee/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — There was no stopping Lamario Nisbeth on Thursday. The senior netted five goals in a very impressive performance to give Class 3A No. 3 Atlas Prep boys soccer a 10-0 win in a Tri-Peaks game over St. Mary’s.

The offense and counterattack were certainly on display today, with Atlas dictating the play and scoring five in each half. Nisbeth had a hat trick in the first half alone. Sophomore Luis Vegas also had a pair of goals in the second half.

“I think we play really well because we all have a lot of experience together,” said Nisbeth, who also wore the captain’s armband today. “We’ve been playing since we were young with each other, so we have a lot of chemistry. I would say our counterattacking and just our offense in general (are our biggest strengths).”

St. Mary’s has a long history of success on the pitch so the final came as a surprise to the Pirates.

“I’ve coached 20 seasons at St. Mary’s; this is the first time a 10-0 loss has ever happened,” said St. Mary’s head coach Gregg Braha. “We’re not sure how to react to that. I think it puts us on notice that we’ve played some really tough 4A schools and played them tougher than we played today.”

St. Mary’s scored a goal in the 66th minute, but it was ruled offsides. A great save by the Atlas goalkeeper in the 88th minute kept the Pirates off the scoreboard.

“I think [this game] gives the boys some time to focus for the rest of the league season,” said Braha. “We need to make a move and win some games for RPI purposes to make the playoffs so I think the wake-up call comes maybe later than expected (in the) sixth game instead of the third or fourth game which we thought we had but I think that’s what they’ll take away from this. Now we’ve got to play at speed, we got to focus, and we’ll be okay.”

Atlas Prep is now 7-0-0 this season and the hope for an undefeated season still remains, but head coach Teo Jackson doesn’t want his team to be complacent.

“Complacency is definitely tough to battle but we have several goals that we go into each game for and intensity is always one,” Jackson said. “We just always try to achieve those goals with intensity.”

Nisbeth agreed with his coach’s sentiments. “We go into every game thinking that the opponent, no matter how bad they are, can still beat us if we play bad. We try to keep that mentality of working hard all the time.”

The Gryphons are far from done when it comes to tough competition in league play. They host No. 2 Salida on Tuesday and the winner of that game will be sitting in teh driver’s seat for the Tri-Peaks title.

  • Mixed emotions in boys soccer tie between Green Mountain and Wheat Ridge

LAKEWOOD — There was a sense of frustration and accomplishment both resonated at Lakewood Memorial Field on Thursday night.

Green Mountain and Wheat Ridge ended in a 1-1 tie after 100 minutes of play in the Class 4A Jeffco boys soccer match.

While Green Mountain (5-4-1, 0-1-1 in 4A Jeffco) — ranked in the top-10 of the CHSAANow.com 4A boys soccer rankings just a few weeks ago after a 4-1 start — was clearly frustrated with the tie.

“We’ve had 70 chances to score in the last four games,” Green Mountain coach Ken Fehr said. “It’s just frustrating.”

Since the good start, the Rams have gone 1-3-1 in their last five games. It seemed like Green Mountain’s offense got back on track when senior Connor Haussler scored in the 20th minute against Wheat Ridge to tie the game at 1-1. However, it would be the last goal in the conference game that featured no scoring in the final 80 minutes, including 20 minutes of overtime.

“We’ve got to learn how to finish,” Fehr said. “We are getting opportunities, we just aren’t finishing. It’s frustrating for everyone.”

Haussler, Blake McKibbon and Greyson Gines all had scoring chances for the Rams in the overtime periods, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Green Mountain does have some practice time ahead to work on finishing. The Rams are back on Lakewood Memorial on Wednesday, Oct. 2, to face No. 3 Golden. The Demons shutout D’Evelyn 6-0 in the game that followed the double-overtime tie.

“That’s going to be a huge game,” Fehr said of the showdown against defending 4A Jeffco champs Golden next week. “But every game has been huge for us this year and we haven’t preformed to where we should yet.”

Wheat Ridge (3-5-1, 0-0-1) had a sense of accomplishment in its conference opening tie. The Farmers went winless last season, but has already had the program going in the right direction under D’Evelyn graduate and first-year coach Nate Flack.

“We are really stoked about where it is at,” Flack said. “When I came in and saw the skill, talent and heart of these boys I was kind of shocked that they didn’t win a game last year.”

The Farmers grabbed a 1-0 lead on Green Mountain with a picture-perfect counterattack after a free kick from the Rams. Senior Jack Francis eventual put in a shot past Green Mountain sophomore goalie Travis Dove in the 10th minute.

“After last year everyone is underestimating us,” Wheat Ridge senior Jack Francis said referring to the Farmers’ 0-15 record last year. “This is definitely an improvement, but we want to get the wins every time we come out.”

Dove and Wheat Ridge junior goalie Ian Abo were solid in net after the first two goals in the opening half.

“The first 10 minute or so I was really excited and thinking we could pull out three points (a win),” Flack said. “Green Mountain has a ton of goal scorers. Greyson (Gines) is a stud. We knew that was coming at us. Ian Abo had an amazing game.”

Wheat Ridge has a break from conference play. The Farmers head west to face Steamboat Springs on Saturday, Sept. 28.

“The break from league will help us,” Francis said. “We can work on some new things. The game we are really looking forward to is Evergreen next week.”

The Farmers have another chance to prove they are dangerous team in 4A Jeffco League this season. Wheat Ridge faces Evergreen on Oct. 3 at Lakewood Memorial.

“We really wanted to make a statement to ourselves that we know how we can play and how hard we work,” Flack said. “If we can do that it’s a win for us. It’s been really awesome. We definitely have the group to have some success.”

Montrose built up a 14-0 halftime lead en route to a 21-0 victory at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.

“Very pleased with the way our defense played,” Montrose coach Brett Mertens said. “They were dominant tonight and made up for some offensive mistakes. It was a great team win and we are very proud of our kids.”

Added Palisade coach Joe Ramunno: “Total dominance by Montrose. Start to finish.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Emmert Kastendieck went 23 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.

    The third quarter was scoreless.

In the fourth quarter, Cole Simmons scored from one yard out with 4:43 to play, sealing the win.

“The line blocked really well,” said Kastendieck, a senior. “The rest of the backs had really good fakes.”

“The defense played lights and we really played well on both sides of the ball,” senior linebacker Ben Robuck added. “I’m really proud of how hard everyone is working and playing. We still have room to improve on both sides of the ball. I’m looking forward to continue playing with my team.”

  • Impressive streak comes to an end for Lewis-Palmer volleyball

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

In the fall of 2011, Nikki Bloemen was in the process of leading the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs volleyball team in kills. As a junior.

It was that same fall that Rampart, Bloemen’s alma mater, was on its way to sweeping Lewis-Palmer at home.

Nowadays that kind of feat is almost unfathomable. And for good reason. That Sept. 22, 2011 win over the Rangers would be the last time an opponent would sweep L-P at home in a best of five match until Sept. 26, 2019.

When it happened on Thursday, Bloemen was no longer getting kills for UCCS; she was coaching the Rams in that win.

While the sweep was certainly impressive, so is what Lewis-Palmer has accomplished since the last time it happened.

The Rangers went undefeated in three full seasons (2014, 2016, 2017) and they won five Class 4A state championships (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018).

In the middle of all that, there was a stretch of nearly six calendar years where they didn’t drop a match at home. The Rangers got beat by Doherty on Sept. 20, 2012 and didn’t see another home loss until Chaparral beat them 3-1 on Sept. 4, 2018.

They did host a tournament in 2012 where Valley beat the Rangers 2-0 on Sept. 8 marking the last official sweep at home of any kind for L-P.

Rampart is currently ranked No. 1 in the 5A volleyball rankings and L-P sits at No. 4 in 4A.

  • Boys golf regionals: Steamboat Springs wins 4A’s Region 3

Steamboat Springs captured the final boys golf regional on Thursday when the Sailors won Class 4A’s Region 3.

The Sailors edged Frederick by shooting 21-over as a team — one stroke ahead of Frederick’s 22-over. Windsor (+27) finished third, and Northridge and Silver Creek tied for fourth at +30.

Steamboat was led by Beck Kuhlman, who won the tournament individually at 2-over. Frederick’s Nick Formby placed second at 4-over, with Silver Creek’s Ben Harding finishing third at 5-over.

This event wrapped up regional play. Six regionals were held on Monday, three on Tuesday, and three on Wednesday.

The state championships are Oct. 7-8.
