  • Durango boys soccer tops Montrose to take control of the Southwestern League

MONTROSE — Durango went on the road to pick up a win over Montrose on Wednesday, and secured sole possession of first place in the Southwestern League.

    The Demons won, 4-3.

“We always expect a battle when we come to Montrose,” Durango coach Aaron Champenoy said.  “They’ve had some good results this year and we knew it was going to take a good effort from us.”

Durango jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by AJ Carlson, assisted by Braden Lyons, and an unassisted goal from Sawyer Fornella.

“We had a quick start and capitalized on two early set pieces,” Champenoy said. “It was great since we worked on them this week leading up to the game.”

Montrose responded with a goal by Bryan Delgado, assisted by Bo Duncan, and another by Sean Alex, assisted by Jorge Baez.

Durango added one more before the first half ended when Lyons scored his second goal again, this one assisted by Leland Heinickie.

“It was huge for us to get the third goal and take the lead into halftime,” Champenoy said.

In the second half, Durango added to its lead when Heinickie scored.

With less then two minutes to go, Montrose’s Alex scored again to make it 4-3.

“We had some defensive adjustments and played much better in the second half and were able to punch in one more goal late which ended up being the game winner,” Champenoy said.

Said Montrose coach Cassie Snyder: “We played our hearts out the whole game and things just didn’t go our way. We had one of the best games we have played all year, even though we were facing a lot of adversity. I’m so proud of how much growth my team has made and this will only make us stronger for the rest of the season.”

  • Cherokee Trail softball hits five consecutive home runs in win over Mullen

    (Courtesy of Jeff Gilbreath)

Cherokee Trail softball had its bats working in a win over Mullen on Wednesday.

The Cougars hit five consecutive home runs in the third inning, going back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back as part of a 10-run inning. They ultimately hit six home runs in the 18-6 win with senior Hunter Gilbreath hitting two, and driving in five runs.

Also hitting home runs on Wednesday: Abby Rupeka, Jenna Medhus, Kelsey Bell and Cheyenne Ausborn.

Cherokee Trail is now 9-6 this season and one of three remaining unbeaten teams in Centennial League play at 2-0.

In the face of such a performance, Mullen displayed exemplary sportsmanship, specifically pitcher Morgan Margeson. In an email to the CHSAA office, home plate umpire Mike Coulter lauded her sportsmanship: “During this whole time [she] kept her composure, even smiled after the fourth one, kept her spirit up.”

As it happens, Margeson led off the top of the fourth inning for Mullen with a double down the right-field line.

After the game, Coulter walked to the circle to speak with Margeson, and told her “that she just demonstrated the best of what high school sports is all about. I told her she should be proud that she set a standard of sportsmanship and grit [which] would be the envy of any high school athlete.”

Coulter also applauded Cherokee Trail’s sportsmanship in the game: “The whole Cherokee Trail team (coaches and players) did their best not to rub it in, which demonstrated a tremendous amount of sportsmanship,” he wrote.

  • No. 3 Golden boys soccer edges Standley Lake in 4A Jeffco opener

ARVADA — Golden boys soccer wouldn’t mind a carbon-copy result to its Class 4A Jeffco League run as last year.

The Demons won the conference title in 2018 by starting off league play with a close 2-1 victory over Standley Lake. Golden — No. 3 in the latest CHSAANow.com 4A boys soccer poll — replicated last year’s conference opener with another 2-1 victory over the Gators late Tuesday afternoon at the North Area Athletic Complex.

“It’s always tough when you play Standley Lake. They are a good program and he (Ken Wood) is a very good coach,” Golden coach Larry Harding said. “At times the game isn’t as pretty as you want it to be, but you grind out the win. You get the win and go home.”

Golden senior Christian Sekavac scored the eventually game-winning goal in the 44th minute. His score into the back of the net broke up a 1-1 tie early in the second half.

“I just tried to stay composed and put it on frame. It hit the bar and went it,” Sekavac said. “After that one we had our motivation back up and I knew we were back in the game.”

The last few minutes saw scoring chances by both teams. Golden senior Ian Persky hit the cross bar in the 76th minute and then had another near goal with a header in the 79th minute that was saved by Standley Lake junior goalie David Crosby.

Standley Lake (6-4, 0-1 in league) nearly had the equalizer in the 77th minute junior Kellen Bundgaard’s free kick from distance had to be punched out by Golden senior goalie David Koury to preserve the victory for the Demons (7-1-1, 1-0).

“We started out really slow and knew it would be a sluggish game,” Sekavac said. “I think in the second half we were able to execute a little bit more. We pulled out the 2-1 win.”

Golden struck first with a goal in the 12th minute. Senior Nate Thompson’s low shot from inside the goal box slipped out of the reach of Crosby.

The Demons controlled most of the play in the first half, but the Gators got the equalizer in the 30th minute. Following a free kick, junior RJ Krapes was able to get his foot on the loose ball and put it past Koury to tie the game at 1-1 going into halftime.

“The (4A) Jeffco League is difficult. There are no easy games,” said Harding, who guided the Demons to their first boys soccer conference title in more than a decade. “You have to come into every game to play and to play to win. If you come in differently, you might come out on the wrong end of things.”

Golden is back in action Thursday night at Lakewood Memorial Field. The Demons face D’Evelyn (3-3-1, 1-0).

“We are hoping to be better this year,” Sekavac said. “I think we have really improved this year and can bring a lot to the table.”

Standley Lake has a bit of a break before returning to the field to face Evergreen on Oct. 2 at Lakewood Memorial Field.
