No. 5 Dakota Ridge football clips Vista Ridge
LAKEWOOD — Dakota Ridge junior Colin Stuhr had the ‘special’ play of the game late Friday afternoon at Jeffco Stadium.
Stuhr blocked the punt of Vista Ridge junior Christopher Livingstone with the Wolves punting from their own 26-yard line late in the first half. The defensive back picked up the loose ball and preceded to return it six yards into the end zone for the special team score.

Dakota Ridge senior James Hess (59) puts pressure on Vista Ridge freshman quarterback Brayden Dorman (16) during the first half Friday at Jeffco Stadium. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “I went right through and blocked the ball,” Stuhr said. “I was lucky that the ball was just lying there and I could pick it up and score.”
The block, scoop and score gave Dakota Ridge — No. 5 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A football rankings — a 17-7 lead going into halftime. The Eagles (3-0 record) held on with a 41-21 victory.
“He (Stuhr) had a heck of a game,” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz said. “He is a disrupter for us for sure. That blocked punt and then to pick it up and score was big. It went from a tight game to giving us some breathing room.”
After Vista Ridge took a 7-0 lead on a 41-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Brayden Dorman to junior Keyon Burris midway through the first quarter, Dakota Ridge scored 17 unanswered points.
Junior running back Sean McNamara capped up a 75-yard touchdown drive for the Eagles with a 1-yard touchdown run. On the next Dakota Ridge possession, Max Hart gave the Eagles their first lead of 10-7 with a 43-yard field goal.

Dakota Ridge junior Mason Galbreath (10) makes a leaping grab over Vista Ridge sophomore Xavier Cisneros during the non-league game Friday at Jeffco Stadium. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Four minutes later the huge special teams play by Stuhr increased the lead to 17-7
A bad snap over the head on Livingstone set up the lone score of the third quarter. Dakota Ridge took over on Vista Ridge’s 6-yard line. McNamara bulled into the end zone for his second touchdown on a 3-yard run to put the Eagles up 24-7.
The Eagles’ defense put good pressure on Dorman all night. Dakota Ridge sacked the young Vista Ridge quarterback four times in the first quarter alone.
“We wanted to rattle the young kid,” Woitalewicz said of getting early pressure on Dorman. “I think the first five or six plays they didn’t have a positive play from scrimmage.”
Stuhr all but sealed the victory on the first play of the fourth quarter. Stuhr intercepted Dorman with the Wolves backed up to their own end zone. The turnover set up the Eagles on Vista Ridge’s 11-yard line. It looked like he might have a chance for a defensive score, but it wasn’t meant to be as he slipped and fell around the 10-yard line.

Vista Ridge junior Keyon Burris (3) is able to split through Dakota Ridge defenders Steve Reyes (33) and Charlie Offerdahl (44) on the way to a 41-yard touchdown Friday at Jeffco Stadium. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “I was definitely thinking about it,” Stuhr said of having the chance for a special team and defensive touchdown. “It sucked to slip and fall down.”
McNamara would stroll into the end zone for his third score with 9:57 left to put Dakota Ridge up 31-7.
The second half wasn’t a thing of beauty. Penalties on both sides and several dropped passes made for the game to last nearly three hours.
“It was an ugly 41-21 win, but we’ll take it,” Woitalewicz said. “I’m going to tell the team we’ll take the win, but we’ve got to play better than that.”
Dakota Ridge has a good test against No. 7 Ponderosa (1-2) next Friday night at EchoPark Stadium in Parker. The Mustangs will be coming off a bye week after edging No. 9 Windsor on Sept. 13 in an early top-10 4A match-up.
“Ponderosa kind of put it on us last year,” Woitalewicz said referring to the Mustangs defeating Dakota Ridge 41-10 last season. “We’ll spend sometime talking about that for sure. They are a great program.”
Vista Ridge (1-2) finally has its home opener next week against Rampart on Friday, Sept. 27, in Colorado Springs. The Wolves started the season with three straight road games, including two trips to Jeffco Stadium having played 4A Jeffco’s Bear Creek and Dakota Ridge.

Football roundup: Lutheran knocks off No. 3 Green Mountain; highlights from big games

(@LHSparkerSports/Twitter) Lutheran stunned third-ranked Green Mountain with a 19-15 upset victory in Class 3A.
Brandon Belgrave had an 85-yard kickoff return for a score to open the game, and he added an 80-yard rushing touchdown later in the second quarter.
After Lutheran went up 6-0, Green Mountain and their star QB Trey Towndrown responded with a 10-yard TD on the ground to take a 7-6 lead.
It stayed that way until Belgrave’s second-quarter touchdown, which allowed Lutheran to take a 12-7 lead into halftime.
Towndrow struck again for Green Mountain in the third, this time on a 3-yard rushing touchdown, and the Rams added a two-point conversion to go ahead 15-12.
But Lutheran wasn’t done. The Lions’ Max Rivkin found Andre Norman for a 30-yard touchdown with four minutes left in the third quarter, giving their team a 19-15 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Both teams are now 2-1.

5A: (7) Eaglecrest 27, Legacy 24
Eaglecrest rallied from a 17-7 halftime hole, and down 24-7 in the third quarter, to win the back-and-forth contest — thanks in large part to 20 unanswered points.
Max Marsh had for three total touchdowns, including two in the final quarter, to help the Raptors rally and win.
Eaglecrest, led by Marsh, grabbed an early lead on a 2-yard run by Marsh in the first quarter. Legacy kicked a field goal to make it 7-3 going to the second.
In the second, Brayden Harris hit Jacob Duran for a 33-yard passing touchdown, and then Braelon Tate rushed for a 2-yard score to put Legacy ahead 17-7.
The Lightning pushed their lead to 24-7 when Harris hit Jaiden Peterson for a 2-yard touchdown with about five minutes to play in the third quarter.
And yet Eaglecrest was unfazed. David Creal rushed for an 8-yard score in the third to make it 24-14 going to the fourth.
And then Marsh did his thing with a 63-yard rushing touchdown, cutting the lead to 24-21, and then a 55-yard passing score to Ty Robinson, to give his team the lead — and the win.

Wheat Ridge football wins 2OT thriller against Arvada West
LAKEWOOD — Rocco Tate could run for City of Wheat Ridge mayor and probably win in the upcoming November elections.
The Wheat Ridge junior running back/linebacker scored four touchdowns through the fourth quarter and two overtime periods late Friday night at Jeffco Stadium. The Farmers rallied from a 14-0 deficit against Arvada West to take an improbable 28-27 victory in double-overtime.

Wheat Ridge senior Max Christensen (9) runs downfield during the first half Friday night at Jeffco Stadium. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “I told the kids before the game that every year there is a defining moment,” Wheat Ridge coach Stacy Coryell said. “I told them, ‘Let’s make this one the defining moment.’ I’m so proud of them.”
Tate had touchdown runs of 5 and 6 yards in the fourth quarter that erased the Wildcats’ 14-0 lead. The junior ran in a 2-point conversion on the second touchdown to make up for a missed PAT.
“It was a great team win,” Tate said. “We finished hard. It all started with our hogs up front to make those touchdowns.”
Both of Tate’s overtime touchdowns came on fourth down from the 1-yard line. Junior kicker Matthias Endland made both of the PATs. The second extra-point kick by Endland sealed the victory and sent the Farmers’ sideline into a frenzy.
Coryell said the Farmers focused on running behind the left side of Wheat Ridge offensive line with senior Soren Howard and junior Chris Smith inside the 10-yard line.

Arvada West junior Evan Hurlburt gets a pass away before Wheat Ridge’s Soren Howard (50) or Jack Micheal (44) can get to the Wildcat quarterback. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) A-West (0-4 record) had a pair of touchdown passes from junior Evan Nuhfer in the overtime period, but a missed extra point after the Wildcats’ second touchdown came back to bite A-West.
“I always have faith in my team,” Tate said. “I know our defense will come out and shine.”
A-West was in control for three quarters. A promising drive by Wheat Ridge came to a sudden halt with an interception by junior Brady Laugen. The Wildcats took over on their own 22-yard line.
Hurlburt went to work for A-West. He connected with senior Nick Nuher on passes of 7, 11 and 15 yards. The big pass plays as the clock whined down were plays to Sebastian Lindeblad. The senior receiver had a 35-yard catch to get the Wildcats down to the Farmers’ 25-yard line.
Hurlburt hit Lindeblad for a 10-yard touchdown with 17 seconds left before halftime to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead going into halftime.

Arvada West senior Oliver Petelo (30) finds some running room against Wheat Ridge. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) A-West struggled on offense in the second half and a bad snap on a punt with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter set Wheat Ridge up on A-West’s 41-yard line.
Coryell compared the victory over A-West to the Farmers winning a conference title back in 2015 with a big win over Denver South.
Wheat Ridge (2-1) has two more non-league games against Centaurus and Liberty before starting 4A Jeffco League play against Chatfield on Oct. 10 at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood.
A-West has one final non-league game before heading into the tough 5A Metro West League play. The Wildcats are at the North Area Athletic Complex next Friday night where they face-off against No. 7 Eaglecrest.
It will be the first of four 5A ranked teams A-West will square off against over the next six weeks before the end of the regular season.

Defensive lockdown in second half lifts Rye football to first 4-0 start in a decade

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) RYE — The last time that Rye football had started a season 4-0, Conner Pigg was wearing pads and helmet. On Friday night he was wearing a headset and watching his players match that feat from a decade ago.
The Class 1A No. 10 Thunderbolts outlasted Rocky Ford 13-12 in a game that was much closer than the final score would indicate. Mistakes were made on both sides and big plays were made at key moments that can only leave Pigg wondering what this version of Rye football is capable of.
“The sky is the limit,” Pigg said. “The question isn’t how good are we? It’s how far can we go?”
After giving up a touchdown on the Meloneers (0-3 overall) first drive of the game, a 12-yard run from Isiah Garcia, Rye (4-0) got on the board thanks to a 33-yard run from Kreed Rahl. But the Thunderbolts struggled to stop the Meloneers defensively in the first half, even if Rocky Ford couldn’t muster up the points to show for it.
“We knew we had to turn it on,” Rahl said. “This was a better team than we had faced all year.”
And it was going to serve as a vital lesson. It appeared that Rye was going to get out of the first half with a 7-6 lead, but the first place after the defense intercepted Garcia, the Thunderbolts fumbled the ball right back to Rocky Ford, setting up first down in the red zone.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) Garcia found Jadon Baldonado in the end zone to put Rocky Ford up 12-7 at the half.
“We had to come out confident (after that),” Krahl said. “We couldn’t come out sad or feeling sorry for ourselves.”
Instead they came out motivated.
The Thunderbolts defense forced a punt on the first Rocky Ford possession of the half of played much more precise than the first 24 minutes of the game.
“We didn’t adjust anything, honestly,” Pigg claimed.
They just tackled better. The head coach counted 10 missed tackles in the first half and told his team that it wouldn’t survive the second half with similar numbers. And on top of keeping the Meloneers out of the end zone, Rye had to find its way in.
That’s when quarterback Hayden Polk made some magic happen. On fourth down, it appeared that Polk got swallowed up by the Rocky Ford defensive line, but out of nowhere he broke free and went for a 38-yard touchdown to make it a 13-12 game.
“I don’t know how I broke away,” Polk said. “I just started spinning and praying that I could somehow get out of there. I just got lucky.”
As evidenced by the last 10 years, a 4-0 start takes more than luck. This team is showing to have the right combination of personnel and execution, with maybe a friendly bounce mixed in here and there. But hey know one thing is for certain, if this team is going to make a special run it has to be willing to face tough competition and that trend will continue in two weeks when Florence rolls into town.
“We’ve never been pushed to our limits this year,” Polk said. “Hopefully we can transfer this to Florence because they’ll be our biggest competition yet.”

No. 10 Fairview football rolls past Doherty

(Derek Lee/CHSAANow.com) COLORADO SPRINGS — Fairview arrived as a top-10 Class 5A football team on Friday night, and showed why in its win over Doherty.
The Knights, ranked No. 10, won 54-21.
Fairview wasn’t fazed by a raucous crowd as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the first drive of the game. Fairview tacked on another touchdown with three minutes left in the quarter before a Doherty touchdown courtesy of senior Brandon Becker closed out the first.
The floodgates blew open in the second for Fairview, with the Knights reaching the endzone four times before the end of the half.
Fairview recovered a Doherty fumble with eight minutes left in the second and the ensuing drive resulted in a touchdown run from junior Dillon Tarves.
Senior quarterback and Northwestern commit Aidan Atkinson showcased his throwing ability, hitting sophomore wideout Grant Page for a 40-yard pass. The drive was capped off by another pass to Page in the endzone with 6:08 left in the half. Not to be outdone, Tarves got open on numerous flat routes and picked up big yardage.
Doherty was able to get within two yards of the endzone, but a fumble gave the ball back to Fairview. One 60-yard pass and a few penalties later, Atkinson found Tarves once again to make it 40-7 Spartans right before the half ended.
“It’s up to the quarterback to get the guys in the right situations and the right plays,” said Atkinson. “(But) without the O-line doing their job and without having capable receivers all around myself, none of that is possible so our O-line did an incredible job tonight.”
Doherty scored just two minutes into the third, but Fairview answered right back with a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff courtesy of Tarves.
The latter half of the game was capped off by two touchdown runs, with each team getting one apiece. After that, it was a just a matter of the clock running down.
“We always got to improve by doing the small things,” Doherty coach Dwight Hale said. “Right now, we’re not doing the small things right for four quarters and it’s showing on the scoreboard and it’s showing in our play. On top of that, we’ve got to make sure we play the way we practice.”
