  • 3A boys golf: Aspen and Lutheran share team lead after Day 1

    (Alan Versaw/CHSAANow.com)

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Around these parts, the first sign of fall for golfers is when your tee time gets delayed by frost on the course. It was definitely fall on Monday morning, though the frost delay was rather manageable at only about 15 minutes.

Fall or not, the Eisenhower Blue Course at the Air Force Academy wasn’t giving any easy passes to the golfers. Several golfers struggled to hold par consistently through the course and birdies were tough to come by for all.

Prospect Ridge’s Walker Franklin shot 2-under 70 to finish as the only golfer under par for the day, and he holds the lead after the first day.

Still very much within striking distance, however, are the Pevny brothers of Aspen. Nic shot an even par, while Jack finished 2-over. Also closing out the day at two over were Westin Pals of Lutheran and Jeffrey Zhou of Kent Denver.

That leaves out a small handful who figured as potential threats to win the tournament. But, it’s a major undertaking to come back on Tuesday from more than four strokes back on Monday.

Thirteen schools brought complete teams to the tournament.

Those teams left in the title hunt include co-leaders Aspen and Lutheran at 16-over for the first round. On the heels of the Skiers and Lions are Holy Family (three back), Kent Denver (five back), and Sterling (six back). All other teams are at least 10 strokes off the lead.

On paper, Lutheran ranks as the surprise of the tournament thus far. The Lions finished third in their region and qualified through the back door with only three players.

But, regardless of who might have surprised with today’s showing, coach Kevin Volz had a hunch this might be coming: “Westin Pals has been my No. 1 player for a few years now,” he said. “He got a good start out of the gate. The other guys saw that, and it helped them get on track.”

Also coming up big for Lutheran today was freshman Jackson Lowe at 5-over.

“When you get two guys going that well, things tend to come around,” Volz added.

  • Alameda boys soccer building something special

Alameda International soccer coach Cesar Alcocer has the Pirates in position for their first postseason berth since 2015. Alameda is 10-1 and ranked No. 6 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A boys soccer poll this week. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

LAKEWOOD — Alameda International boys soccer coach Cesar Alcocer is helping to set a new standard.

“I’m seeking better opportunities for our kids, our school to get recognized and talk about Alameda in a positive way,” said Alcocer during Monday’s practice for the Pirates. “I wanted to change the reputation.”

An early-season victory over Class 4A Golden — No. 2 in 4A rankings — gave Alameda International the confidence that it can compete with any team in the state. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Alcocer is a 2009 graduate of Alameda and stayed involved with the Pirates’ soccer program since he graduated as an assistant. He took over the head coaching duties in 2017 after longtime coach Steven Houwen retired from coaching.

Over the past three years, Alcocer’s dream of changing the culture and giving his student-athletes more opportunities on-and-off the field has already started to materialize. Alameda has a stellar 10-1 record, including victories over Class 4A Jeffco League’s Golden and Standley Lake. Golden is currently ranked No. 2 in the 4A boys soccer CHSAANow.com poll.

“Those two wins (Golden and Standley Lake) gave us a lot of confidence,” Alameda senior captain Alisdaid Ovalle said.

The Pirates are No. 6 in the CHSAANow.com rankings and No. 7 in the RPI standings with four regular-season games left.

“I don’t think it’s surprising,” Ovalle said of the Pirates in the top-10 in the rankings and RPI. “It’s been a two-year process where we’ve been on the verge of playoffs. Our hard work is paying off.”

Alameda was just outside the top-32 in RPI the previous two years. The last time the program made the 4A state playoff field was in 2015.

“Being in the playoffs is an honor,” Alameda junior captain Eduardo Rodriguez said. “I’m pretty sure if we make it to the playoffs we’ll be able to compete and we’ll do good.”

The Pirates dropped their 4A/3A Colorado 7 League opener 2-1 to No. 4 Skyview last week, but having a bump along any road is expected.

“That loss was tough. I can’t deny that,” Ovalle said of the loss to Skyview. “We can’t let minor setbacks hold us back. We’ve just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing and learn from that loss.”

Over the next two weeks, Alameda has conference games against Fort Lupton, Englewood, Conifer and Arvada. The Pirates can clinch a playoff berth and maybe more importantly continue to build on Alcocer’s goals.

“We look at each other as family,” Rodriguez said. “We are really strong together. A lot of us have learned how to play together since our freshman year. I feel like that helps us a lot.”

Alameda junior Jose Martinez is the Pirates leading scoring this season with 13 goals and five assists. The forward believes the work Alameda put in even before the 2019 season began back in August is the reason for the success, along with the mentality.

“The effort that we have put into the game,” Martinez said when asked about how the Pirates have been successful. “We play like it could be our last game of our life. This isn’t a team, it’s more like a family.”

Alcocer has stressed to his players that they need to believe in themselves to continue their rise.

“On the field we are 11-versus-11, but if we have right mentality anything can happen,” Alcocer said. “They need to believe in themselves and trust themselves.”

While the wins have been nice, Alcocer remains focused on the big picture of the future his players after their high school careers are over.

“My goal is to have them go to college so they have a better future academically because that is the most important thing, soccer comes after that,” Alcocer said. “I want a better future for them.”

  • Denver Broncos high school football coach of the week: Vista PEAK’s John Sullivan

Vista PEAK is, quite literally, in the midst of the best football season in school history.

The Bison, which started varsity play in 2012, are 5-0 for the first time, and are coming off a big 48-27 win over then-No. 3 Dakota Ridge last week — a win that opened some eyes around the state, and emphatically announced that this team was for real.

That’s not to say there’s any celebrating going on yet. Vista PEAK, now ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, has another big game this week, against No. 10 Hinkley, an Aurora Public School rival.

But before then, there’s another first: Vista PEAK coach John Sullivan has been named the Broncos high school football coach of the week. It is the first time the Bison have been honored as part of the program.

The Broncos coach of the week is selected in partnership with the Broncos and CHSCA. Find a complete list of winners on this page.

Ryan Casey: Why did you want to become a coach?

John Sullivan: It was just kinda in my blood. My dad was one of my high school coaches, and I actually got into teaching so I could coach. At the time, when I first got into it, it was just because I loved the sport. But the longer I was in it, your priorities and your values kind of shift a little bit.

Just seeing the kids when they finish playing football, and when they come back to see you, it just puts a really warm place in my heart, makes me feel good. I can see that I had some sort of impact on these kids, whether it be on the football field, or in life, helping these kids grow up, and being there for them. It’s just something that has really been important for me.

Casey: What kind of coach do you think you are?

Sullivan: I like to challenge the kids, off the field and on the field. I put a high premium on character, and put a high premium on work ethic. But there’s also a place where myself and our coaching staff is not afraid to tell the kids we love them, and we value them and believe in them.

There’s kind of both ends of it, where we want to push the kids but also let them know that we’re here for them, and it’s unconditional, and we’ll do whatever we can to help them be successful in life.

Casey: You guys are 5-0. What has the first part of the season been like?

Sullivan: As with pretty much every program in the state, we have kids that work hard during the summer, in the weight room and in 7-on-7. We had a pretty good idea, based on returners from last year, that we could possibly be a good team this year. There’s a lot that goes into being a good team outside of football — chemistry, and the involvement of the parents in a positive. And we had all those things.

We started the season with a lightning storm down at Mesa Ridge, and came back to school at 1 o’clock in the morning. We had some adversity right away, and our kids have really stepped up. I give them a ton of credit. They’ve absorbed what we’ve thrown at them.

This is also Year 2 of us kinda changing our offensive and defensively philosophy, and putting a greater premium on the character development stuff. And we’re really seeing the fruits of our labor with that.

Casey: Last week, you beat Dakota Ridge 48-27. I think people thought you were a good team, but I think that win opened a few eyes. Do you feel that way, too?

Sullivan: I think so. I hope so. As a newer school, you’re always struggling for an identity and trying to get noticed. We had a pretty good idea of what we have here, and then going into the game, our kids knew this was an opportunity for people outside of Aurora to try to take notice.

We hope that happened, and we’re on to the next week. We have a big game against Hinkley, who is also undefeated.

Casey: I was going to say, that’s pretty cool for Aurora Public Schools to have this game on Friday …

Sullivan: It is. It’s awesome. You know, Rangeview has had some great success in basketball, but other than that, there hasn’t been a whole lot of team sports in APS that have garnered a lot of attention, so it is really cool that two teams can go in and play a meaningful game in the middle of the year that has playoff implications.

They’re a good team, and we are really looking forward to this game, as well.
