Steamboat Springs volleyball coach Wendy Hall wins 500th career match

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com) STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Wendy Hall joined elite company on Thursday night as she won her 500th career match.
Hall, now in her 27th season as the head coach of the Steamboat Springs volleyball program, earned the milestone when her team swept Summit. She is just the fifth volleyball coach in state history to ever win 500 matches, according to the volleyball records, and is just the fourth to win 500 at one school.
“I don’t really think coaches should take much credit for wins,” Hall said after the match. “I always say: ‘Players win, coaches lose.’ Maybe I get a little credit for when I call a timeout and they missed a serve, but other than that, the kids are the ones that deserve that. Anybody that’s ever played in this program, they’re all a part of that.”
Hall, a Steamboat Springs alum, started became head coach in 1989. She was an assistant prior to that, and is now in her 33rd year as the head coach.
“This place means the world to me,” Hall said. “This program means the world to me.”
Hall’s 27 years as a head coach are the third-most at one school, and are tied for the fourth-most overall.
“It’s been my passion for 30-plus years, and I still love it,” Hall said of coaching. “It’s just an incredible way to make a difference with kids.”
During her career, Hall’s teams have won 10 league titles, and qualified for the state tournament nine times. She has been named coach of the year 11 times.
And yet, even after achieving such a monumental milestone, Hall’s first thoughts were with her players.
“I’m just really proud of the way the kids played tonight,” Hall said right after the match. “We’ve been struggling. It’s so nice to see them learn to fight, and be able to close the deal. To come from behind in that third. It’s just a big step for these girls. I’m much more emotional about that.”

No. 5 Roaring Fork boys soccer wins a top-5 matchup vs. No. 3 Delta

(Jonathan Delgado) In a top-5 Class 3A boys soccer matchup, No. 5 Roaring Fork beat No. 3 Delta on Thursday.
The Rams won, 2-1.
“I believe it was a team effort,” Roaring Fork coach Nick Forbes said. “I feel like that every single player from starters to players coming off the bench showed they wanted it more.”
Roaring Fork scored two first half goals, the first from Emiliano Magana and the second from Dylan Webster.
“Every single player from starters to players coming off the bench wanted it more and that showed by our effort on the field,” Roaring Fork goalkeeper Noah Wheeless said.
Delta scored a second half goal as Martin Corral scored on a cross by Nathan Downey.
“I feel Roaring Fork came out with more intensity and we didn’t match it early on,” Delta coach Paul Shean said. “They put in two goals as they took advantage of our slow start. We played hard, but against good teams if you let your guard down for a couple minute stretch it will always find a way to hurt you. Credit to Coach Forbes and his squad for coming out the better team today.”

No. 7 Palmer Ridge volleyball takes down No. 1 Discovery Canyon

(Derek Lee/CHSAANow.com) MONUMENT — The Discovery Canyon Thunder came into The Cave at Palmer Ridge High and made a ton of noise, but it was the Palmer Ridge Bears who had the final say, winning 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9.
It’s a win that can reshape the outlook of the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference as the Thunder was ranked No. 1 in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com rankings with the Bears checking in at No. 7.
Senior Naeemah Weathers sealed the victory with a vicious spike, giving the Bears a 15-9 win in the final set. Weathers also had some key blocks in the middle sets that gave Palmer Ridge the momentum they needed.
Weathers said that the message before the final set was that if they fought as hard as they did in the first sets that they played, that they needed to finish through no matter what

(Derek Lee/CHSAANow.com) “Even if we lost, we had to push our hardest,” said Weathers. “We lost to (Discovery Canyon) in state last year so that was a big motivator for us to be able to beat them in a home game in our gym and just be able to take it home.”
“They’re just as tough as they were last year,” said Bears head coach Trevor Sullivan. “I’m very proud (of my girls)), their tenacity was probably my favorite thing. We kept our foot on the accelerator, we’ve got to push to the end.”
Discovery Canyon took the first set, but Palmer Ridge was able to even it up one apiece after the second set. The Thunder won the next set by a slim margin after Palmer Ridge lost the lead late in the set, but the Bears came roaring back with seven-point win in set four.
“I like to tell our team if the first few sets don’t necessarily go our way that we have to decide what team we want to be,” said Sullivan. “I think at that point we decided that we were going to be the team that was the aggressor in this one.”
The final set was all Palmer Ridge as they jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and never relinquished it.
“We had momentum going into that fifth set,” continued Sullivan. “So that was kind of my mindset going into that and again focusing on being the aggressor and not waiting for teams to strike at us but striking first. (Discovery Canyon) is an awesome team and I think that’s how our league stacks up. Every night we go out, it’s going to be a battle just like this.”
The Bears now stand at 8-4-0 while Discovery Canyon suffer just their third loss of the season. The Thunder are now 10-3-0 on the season.
